اَلْفُنُونِ

the arts

أَوْ

or

عِلْمٍ

a science

مِنَ

from

الْعُلُومِ،

the sciences,

the arts or a science from the sciences,

وَتَكَلَّمَ

and he spoke

عَلَى

according to

قَدْرِ

the measure of

قُوَّتِهِ

his power

الْبَيَانِيَّةِ

explanatory

وَفَصَاحَتِهِ

and his eloquence

اللُّغَوِيَّةِ،

linguistic,

and he spoke according to the measure of his explanatory power and linguistic eloquence,

وَرَاعَى

and he observed

مَذْهَبَ

the school

أَصْحَابِهِ

of his companions

وَاتَّخَذَهُ

and he took it

نُصْبَ

before

عَيْنِهِ.

his eye.

and he observed the school of his companions and took it before his eye.

وَمِنْ

and from

هُنَا

here

اتَّسَعَ

expanded

مَجَالُ

the field of

التَّفْسِيرِ

exegesis

اتِّسَاعاً

an expansion

لَا

not

يُحَدُّ

is bounded

قَدْرُهُ

its measure

بِحَدٍّ

by a bound

صَحِيحٍ.

correct.

And from here the field of exegesis expanded an expansion whose measure is not bounded by a correct bound.

وَاشْتَمَلَ

and it included

عَلَى

of

كُتُبٍ

books

لَا

not

يُحْصَرُ

is confined

عَدَدُهَا

their number

وَلَا

and not

يُحْصَى.

is counted.

And it included books whose number is neither confined nor counted.

وَقَدْ

and indeed

تَوَجَّهَتْ

turned

طَائِفَةٌ

a party

مِنَ

from

الْمُفَسِّرِينَ

the exegetes

إِلَى

toward

هَذِهِ

these

الْمَقَاصِدِ

purposes

كُلِّهَا

all of them

فِي

in

تَفَاسِيرِهِمْ

their exegeses

And indeed a party of the exegetes turned toward all of these purposes in their exegeses.

فَمِنْهُمْ

so of them

مَنْ

is he who

اخْتَارَ

chose

اللُّغَةَ

the language

الْعَرَبِيَّةَ

Arabic

So of them is he who chose the Arabic language

وَمِنْهُمْ

and of them

مَنْ

is he who

اخْتَارَ

chose

اللُّغَةَ

the language

الْفَارِسِيَّةَ

Persian

and of them is he who chose the Persian language,

وَنَحَا

and inclined

بَعْضُهُمْ

some of them

نَحْوَ

toward

الِاخْتِصَارِ،

conciseness,

and some of them inclined toward conciseness,

وَأَحَبَّ

and loved

بَعْضُهُمُ

some of them

التَّطْوِيلَ

elaboration

وَالْإِطْنَابَ،

and prolixity,

and some of them loved elaboration and prolixity,

وَوَسَّعُوا

and they widened

أَذْيَالَ

the skirts of

الْعِلْمِ

science

وَفَرَّعُوا

and they branched

حَوَاشِيَهُ.

its margins.

and they widened the skirts of science and branched its margins.

وَقَدْ

and indeed

أَعْطَى

gave

هَذَا

this

الْفَقِيرُ

poor one

حَظَّهُ

his share

مِنْ

from

هَذِهِ

these

الْعُلُومِ

sciences

وَالْفُنُونِ

and arts

كُلِّهَا،

all of them,

And indeed this poor one has been given his share of all these sciences and arts,

وَأَحَاطَ

and he encompassed

بِمُعْظَمِ

most of

أُصُولِهَا

its foundations

وَجُمْلَةٍ

and a sum

صَالِحَةٍ

sound

مِنْ

from

فُرُوعِهَا،

its branches,

and he encompassed most of its foundations and a sound sum of its branches,

وَحَازَ

and he acquired

عَلَى

upon

نَوْعٍ

a sort

مِنَ

of

التَّحْقِيقِ

verification

وَالِاسْتِقْلَالِ

and independence

فِي

in

كُلِّ

every

بَابٍ

chapter

مِنْ

from

أَبْوَابِهَا

its chapters

and he acquired a sort of verification and independence in every chapter from its chapters

بِوَجْهٍ

in a way

يُشْبِهُ

resembling

"الِاجْتِهَادَ

"ijtihad

فِي

in

الْمَذْهَبِ"

the school"

(عَلَى

(upon

اصْطِلَاحِ

the terminology

الْأُصُولِيِّينَ)

of the usulis)

in a way resembling "ijtihad in the school" (upon the terminology of the usulis).

وَفَنَّانِ

and two arts

آخَرَانِ

other

أَوْ

or

ثَلَاثَةٌ

three

مِنْ

from

فُنُونِ

arts of

التَّفْسِيرِ

exegesis

أُلْقِيَتْ

were cast

into

خَاطِرِي

my mind

مِنْ

from

بَحْرِ

the ocean of

الْجُودِ

generosity

الْإِلَهِيِّ،

divine,

And two other arts or three from the arts of exegesis were cast into my mind from the ocean of divine generosity,

فَلَوْ

so if

سَأَلْتَنِي

you asked me

فَأَنَا

then I am

تِلْمِيذُ

a student of

الْقُرْآنِ

the Quran

الْعَظِيمِ

the Mighty

بِلَا

without

وَاسِطَةٍ،

intermediary,

so if you asked me, then I am a student of the Mighty Quran without an intermediary,

كَمَا

just as

أَنِّي

I am

أُوَيْسِيُّ

an Uwaisi of

الرُّوحِ

the spirit

النَّبَوِيَّةِ

prophetic

-عَلَى

-upon

صَاحِبِهَا

its owner

أَلْفُ

thousand

سَلَامٍ

peace

وَتَحِيَّةٍ-

and greeting-

just as I am an Uwaisi of the prophetic spirit - upon its owner be a thousand peaces and greetings -

وَمُسْتَفِيدٌ

and a beneficiary

بِلَا

without

وَاسِطَةٍ

مِنَ

from

الْكَعْبَةِ

the Kaaba

الْحَسْنَاءِ

the beautiful

and a beneficiary without an intermediary from the beautiful Kaaba

وَمُتَأَثِّرٌ

and affected without it by the greatest prayer.
