لَدَىatالْأُصُولِيِّينَthe foundational jurists

The foundational jurists have knowledge of the history of revelation.

مَعْرِفَةُknowledgeتَارِيخِof the historyالنُّزُولِ،of revelation,

knowledge of the history of revelation,

وَلَكِنَّهُمْand but theyرُبَّمَاperhapsيَجْعَلُونَthey make

but they perhaps make

إِجْمَاعَthe consensusالسَّلَفِof the pious predecessorsالصَّالِحِrighteous

the consensus of the righteous pious predecessors

أَوْorاتِّفَاقَthe agreementجُمْهُورِof the majorityالْعُلَمَاءِof the scholars

or the agreement of the majority of scholars

عَلَىonشَيْءٍa matterعَلَامَةًas a signلِلْنَّسْخِfor abrogation

upon a matter as a sign for abrogation

فَيَقُولُونَso they speakبِهِ.with it.

and thus they rule accordingly.

وَقَدْand indeedفَعَلَhas doneذَلِكَthatكَثِيرٌmanyمِنَofالْفُقَهَاءِthe jurists

Many jurists have done this,

وَيُمْكِنُand it is possibleأَنْthatيَكُونَthere beفِيinمِثْلِlikeهَذِهِtheseالْمَوَاضِعِplaces

and it is possible that in such places

مَاwhatتَصْدُقُtruthfully appliesعَلَيْهِto itالْآيَةُthe verse

there is that to which the verse truly applies

غَيْرَother thanمَاwhatيَنْطَبِقُcorrespondsعَلَيْهِto itالْإِجْمَاعُ.the consensus.

other than what the consensus corresponds to.

غُمُوضٌobscurityفِيinرِوَايَاتِthe narrationsالنَّاسِخِof the abrogationوَالْمَنْسُوخِ:and the abrogated:

وَبِالْجُمْلَةِand in summaryفَإِنَّindeedالرِّوَايَاتِthe narrationsوَالْآثَارَand the traditions

And in summary, indeed the narrations and traditions

الَّتِيwhichتَتَحَدَّثُspeakعَنِaboutالنَّسْخِ،abrogation,

that speak about abrogation,

وَتُنْبِئُand informعَنْهُabout it

and inform about it

تَحْتَوِيcontainعَلَىuponغَمْرٍan oceanعَظِيمٍ،great,

contain a great ocean,

يَصْعُبُit is difficultالْوُصُولُreachingإِلَىtoعُمْقِهِits depthوَغَوْرِهِ.and its abyss.

it is difficult to reach its depth and abyss.

آثَارٌtraditionsمُتَعَلِّقَةٌpertainingبِأُمُورٍto mattersأُخْرَى:other:

Traditions pertaining to other matters:

وَلِأَصْحَابِand for the companionsالْحَدِيثِof hadithمِنَfromالْمُفَسِّرِينَthe exegetes

And for the hadith scholars among the exegetes

خَارِجَoutsideهَذِهِtheseالْأَشْيَاءِthings

outside of these things

أُمُورٌmattersأُخْرَى،other,

are other matters,

يُورِدُونَهَاthey bring itكَذَلِكَlikewiseفِيinتَفَاسِيرِهِمْ،their exegeses,

which they likewise bring in their exegeses,

  • مُنَاظَرَةِthe debateالصَّحَابَةِof the companions- رَضِيَ- may be pleasedاللَّهُGodعَنْهُمْ -with them -
  • the debate of the Companions - may God be pleased with them -

  • in a matter from the matters

  • وَاسْتِشْهَادِهِمْand their citing as evidenceبِآيَةٍwith a verseأَوْorتَمْثِيلِهِمْtheir exemplifyingلِمَسْأَلَةٍfor an issueبِآيَةٍwith a verse
  • and their citing a verse as evidence or exemplifying an issue with a verse

  • مِنَfromالْآيَاتِ،the verses,
  • from the verses,

  • أَوْorتِلَاوَةِthe recitationالنَّبِيِّof the Prophet- صَلَّى- may send blessingsاللَّهُGodعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ -and grant peace -
  • or the recitation of the Prophet - may God send blessings and grant peace upon him -

  • آيَةًa verseمِنَfromالْآيَاتِthe versesالْكَرِيمَةِnoble
  • of a verse from the noble verses

  • لِلْاِسْتِشْهَادِfor citation as evidenceأَوْorرِوَايَةِnarrationحَدِيثٍof a hadith
  • for citation or the narration of a hadith

  • يُوَافِقُthat agrees withالْآيَةَthe verseفِيinأَصْلِthe originمَعْنَاهُ.of its meaning.
  • that agrees with the verse in the origin of its meaning.

  • أَوْorطَرِيقُthe methodالتَّلَفُظِof pronunciationوَالْقِرَاءَةِand readingلِآيَةٍ،for a verse,
  • Or the method of pronunciation and reading for a verse,

  • أُثِرَتْtransmittedعَنِfromالنَّبِيِّthe Prophet- صَلَّى- may send blessingsاللَّهُGodعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ -and grant peace -
  • transmitted from the Prophet - may God send blessings and grant peace upon him -

  • أَوْorأَصْحَابِهِhis companions- رَضِيَ- may be pleasedاللَّهُGodعَنْهُمْwith them- أَجْمَعِينَ.- all of them.
  • or his companions - may God be pleased with them - all of them.
