مُعْرِضِينَ

turning away

Turning away.

أَيْ

that is

That is:

إِذَا

when

قِيلَ

it is said

لَهُمْ

to them

اتَّقُوا

fear

مَا

what is

بَيْنَ

between

أَيْدِيكُمْ

your hands

When it is said to them, 'Fear what is before you'

وَمَا

and what is

خَلْفَكُمْ

behind you

أَعْرَضُوا

they turned away

and what is behind you, they turn away.

التَّحْقِيقُ

The investigation

الدَّقِيقُ

precise

فِي

regarding

كَلِمَةِ

the word

إِذْ

'Idh'

The precise investigation regarding the word 'Idh':

وَلْيُعْلَمْ

And let it be known

أَيْضاً

also

أَنَّ

that

الْأَصْلَ

the origin

فِي

in

مِثْلِ

like

قَوْلِهِ

His saying

And let it be known also that the origin in such statements of His

تَعَالَى

the Most High

وَإِذْ

'And when

قَالَ

said

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ

to the angels'

- He is Exalted - 'And when your Lord said to the angels'

وَإِذْ

'And when

قَالَ

said

مُوسَى

Moses'

and 'And when Moses said'

أَنَّ

is that

كَلِمَةَ

the word

إِذْ

'Idh'

ظَرْفُ

is an adverb of

فِعْلٍ

time/action

is that the word 'idh' is a verbal adverb,

وَلَكِنَّهَا

but it

نُقِلَتْ

was transferred

إِلَى

to

مَعْنَى

the meaning of

التَّخْوِيفِ

frightening

وَالتَّهْوِيلِ

and terrifying

وَأَمْثَالِ

and the like of

ذَلِكَ

that

but it has been shifted to signify frightening, terrifying, and the like.

فَكَأَنَّ

It is as if

شَخْصاً

someone

يَسْتَحْضِرُ

is bringing to mind

الْمَوَاضِعَ

the places

الْهَائِلَةَ

terrifying

It is as if a person is bringing to mind terrifying places

أَوْ

or

الْوَقَائِعَ

events

الْهَائِلَةَ

terrifying

الْعَظِيمَةَ

and immense

مِنْ

without

دُونِ

need for

تَرْكِيبٍ

composition

لِلْجُمَلِ

of sentences

or immense, terrifying events without structuring sentences,

وَمِنْ

and without

غَيْرِ

other than

وُقُوعِ

the occurrence of

الْكَلِمَاتِ

the words

فِي

in

حَيِّزِ

the realm of

الْإِعْرَابِ

grammatical inflection

and without the words falling into any realm of grammatical inflection,

فَإِنَّ

for indeed

الْغَرَضَ

the purpose

الْمَطْلُوبَ

desired

هُوَ

is

اسْتِحْضَارُهَا

bringing them to mind

وَذِكْرُهَا

and mentioning them

for the desired purpose is to bring them to mind and mention them

حَتَّى

until

تَرْتَسِمَ

is etched

صُورَتُهَا

their image

الْبَارِزَةُ

prominent

فِي

in

ذِهْنِ

the mind of

الْمُخَاطَبِ

the addressee

until their prominent image is etched in the addressee's mind,

وَيَسْتَوْلِيَ

and overtakes

الْخَوْفُ

fear

مِنْهَا

of them

وَاسْتِهْوَالُهَا

and their terrifying nature

عَلَى

upon

قَلْبِهِ

his heart

وَضَمِيرِهِ

and his conscience

and fear of them and their terrifying nature take over his heart and conscience.

فَالْتَّحْقِيقُ

Thus the correct view

هُوَ

is

أَنَّهُ

that

فِي

in

أَمْثَالِ

like

هَذِهِ

these

الْمَوَاضِعِ

places

Thus, the accurate verification is that in such places

لَا

no

حَاجَةَ

need

إِلَى

for

التَّفْتِيشِ

searching

وَالْبَحْثِ

and inquiring

عَنِ

about

الْعَوَامِلِ

the governing agents

فِي

in

هَذِهِ

this

الْكَلِمَةِ

word

there is no need to search and inquire about the governing agents for this word,

وَاللَّهُ

and Allah

أَعْلَمُ

knows best

and Allah knows best.

Omission of the preposition:

the omission of

the preposition

And let it be known also that omitting the preposition from the infinitive 'an' is consistent in Arab speech,

and the intended meaning then is 'li-an' (so that) or 'bi-an' (by that).
