وَيُقَالُ:And
And it is said:
إِنَّIndeedعَلِيّاًAli

May Allah not guide his leader, nor make his guide happy, nor hit a rain, nor travel except slowly, nor agree except with a lion.
وَلَاnorأَسْعَدَmake happyرَائِدَهُhis guide
nor make his guide happy,
وَلَاnorأَصَابَhitغَيْثاًa rain
nor hit a rain,
وَلَاnorسَارَtravelإِلَّاexceptرِيثاًslowly
nor travel except slowly,
وَلَاnorوَافَقَagreeإِلَّاexceptلَيْثاً،a lion.
nor agree except with a lion.
أَبْعَدَهُMay Allah banish himاللَّهُandوَأَسْحَقَهُcrush him
May Allah banish him and crush him, and kindle a fire in his tracks.
وَأَوْقَدَand kindleنَاراًa fireعَلَىonأَثَرِهِ،his tracks.

لَاMayحَطَّnotاللَّهُAllahرَحْلَهُset down his luggage
May Allah not set down his luggage, nor uncover his dwelling place, nor bring glad tidings of him to his family.
وَلَاnorكَشَفَuncoverمَحَلَّهُhis dwelling place

وَلَاnorبَشَّرَbring glad tidingsبِهِof himأَهْلَهُ،to his family.

لَاMayزَكَاnotلَهُprosper for himمَطْلَبٌa quest
May no quest prosper for him, nor any path be wide for him.
وَلَاnorرَحُبَbe wideلَهُfor himفِيهِin itمَذْهَبٌ،a path.
nor any path be wide for him.
لَاMayسَقَاهُnotاللَّهُAllahغَمَاماًgive him rainclouds
May Allah not give him rainclouds, nor make easy for him an aim.
وَلَاnorيَسَّرَmake easyلَهُfor himمَرَاماً،an aim.
nor make easy for him an aim.
لَاMayفَرَّجَnotاللَّهُAllahهَمَّهُrelieve his worry
May Allah not relieve his worry, nor clear his grief.
وَلَاnorسَرَّىclearغَمَّهُ،his grief.
nor clear his grief.
وَلَاnorحَلَّloosenعَقْدَهُhis knot
Nor loosen his knot, nor kindle his fire-stick.
وَلَاnorأَوْرَىkindleزِنْدَهُ،his fire-stick.
Nor loosen his knot, nor kindle his fire-stick.
جَعَلَهُMay Allah make himاللَّهُthe traveler ofسَفَرَseparationالْفِرَاقِandوَعَصَاthe staff ofالشِّقَاقِ،discord.
May Allah make him the traveler of separation and the staff of discord.
وَأَنْشَدَ:And he recited:
And he recited:
بِأَنْكَدِWith the most wretchedطَائِرٍbirdوَبِشَرِّand the worstقَالْsaying
With the most wretched bird and the worst saying... to the farthest goal and worst condition.
لِأَبْعَدِto the farthestغَايَةٍgoalوَأَخَسِّand worstحَالْcondition.

بِحَدِّBy the edge ofالسَّنَدِSindhحَيْثُwhereيَكُونُit isمَنِّيfrom me
By the edge of Sindh where it is from me... as the distance between the south and the north.
كَمَاAsبَيْنَbetweenالْجَنُوبِthe southإِلَىtoالشَّمَالْthe north.
As the distance between the south and the north.
غَرِيباًA strangerتَمْتَطِيridingقَدَمَيْكَyour feetدَهْراًforever
A stranger riding your feet forever... in fear, yearning for your family.
عَلَىOnخَوْفٍfearتَحُنُّyearningإِلَىtoالْعِيَالْthe family.
In fear, yearning for your family.
الْبَاهِلِيُّ:Al-Bahili:

إِذَاWhenاسْتَقَلَّتْcarryبِكَyouالرِّكَابُthe mounts
When the mounts carry you... then to where the clouds give no milk.
فَحَيْثُThen to whereلَاnotدَرَّتِgive milkالسَّحَابُthe clouds.
Then to where the clouds give no milk.
وَحَيْثُAnd whereلَاnoيُبْتَغَىis soughtفَلَاحٌsuccess
And where no success is sought... and where no return is hoped.
وَحَيْثُAnd whereلَاnoيُرْتَجَىis hopedإِيَابُreturn.
And where no return is hoped.
ابْنُIbnأَبِيAbiالسَّرْحِ:Al-Sarh:
Ibn Abi Al-Sarh:
فَسِرْSo travelبِالنُّحُوسِwith inauspiciousnessإِلَىtoبَلْدَةٍa town
So travel with inauspiciousness to a town... where you are inhabited and not provided for.
تُعَمَّرُyou are inhabitedفِيهَاin itوَلَاand notتُرْزَقُprovided for.

وَلَاNorتُمْرِعُflourishالْأَرْضُthe earthمِنْfromنَهْرِهَاits river
Nor does the earth flourish from its river... nor does the leafy tree bear fruit.
وَلَاnorيُثْمِرُbear fruitالشَّجَرُthe treeالْمُورِقُleafy.
nor does the leafy tree bear fruit.
تَغِيضُRecedeالْبِحَارُthe seasبِهَاin itمَرَّةًonce
The seas recede in it once... and the abundant cloud fails in it.
وَيَكْدِيand failsالسَّحَابُthe cloudبِهَاin itالْمِغْدَقُabundant.

أَدْنَىClosestخُطَاكَof your stepsالْهِنْدُIndiaوَالصِّينُand China
Closest of your steps are India and China... and every inauspiciousness is bound to you.
وَكُلُّand everyنَحْسٍinauspiciousnessبِكَto youمَقْرُونُbound.
and every inauspiciousness is bound to you.
بِحَيْثُWhereلَاnoيَأْنَسُfinds comfortمُسْتَأْنِسٌone seeking comfort
Where no one seeking comfort finds comfort... and where no saddened person is relieved.
وَحَيْثُand whereلَاnoيُفَرَّجُis relievedمَحْزُونُsaddened person.
and where no saddened person is relieved.
تَهْوِيFallبِكَwith youالْأَرْضُthe earthإِلَىtoبَلْدَةٍa town
The earth makes you fall to a town... in which there is neither water nor clay.
لَيْسَthere is notبِهَاin itمَاءٌwaterوَلَاnorطِينٌclay.

حَدَّثَنَاTold usأَبُوAbuعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahأَحْمَدُAhmadبْنُson ofأَبِيAbiدُؤَادَDudقَالَ:he said:
Abu Abdullah Ahmad bin Abi Duwad told us, saying: Al-Ma'mun used to invalidate dreams and say:
كَانَused toالْمَأْمُونُAl-Ma'munيُبْطِلُinvalidateالرُّؤْيَاdreams
Al-Ma'mun used to invalidate dreams and say:
وَيَقُولُ:and say:
and say:
لَيْسَتْThey are notبِشَيْءٍanything
They are nothing, and if they were true, we would see them and nothing of them would fall short.
وَلَوْand ifكَانَتْthey wereعَلَىonالْحَقِيقَةِthe truthكُنَّاwe wouldنَرَاهَاsee them
and if they were true, we would see them and nothing of them would fall short.
وَلَاand notيَسْقُطُfallمِنْهَاfrom itشَيْءٌ،anything.
and nothing of them would fall short.
فَلَمَّاSo whenرَأَيْنَاwe sawإِنَّمَاthat onlyيَصِحُّis trueمِنْهَاfrom itالْحَرْفُthe letterوَالْحَرْفَانِand the two lettersمِنَofالْكَثِيرِthe much
So when we saw that only a letter or two of the much is true, we knew it is false and that most of it is not true.
عَلِمْنَاwe knewأَنَّهَاthat itبَاطِلٌis falseوَأَنَّand thatأَكْثَرَهَاmost of itلَاnotيَصِحُّ،is true.

وَكَانَAnd he hadبَعَثَsentبِابْنِهِhis sonالْعَبَّاسِAl-Abbasإِلَىtoبِلَادِlands ofالرُّومِthe Romans
And he had sent his son Al-Abbas to the lands of the Romans, and news of him was delayed for him.
فَأَبْطَأَso was delayedعَلَيْهِfor himخَبَرُهُhis news
and news of him was delayed for him.
فَصَلَّىSo he prayedذَاتَoneيَوْمٍdayالصُّبْحَthe morning prayer
So he prayed one day the morning prayer and nodded off, then woke up and called for his mount and rode.
وَخَفَقَand nodded off
and nodded off,
وَانْتَبَهَand woke up
then woke up
وَدَعَاand calledبِدَابَّتِهِfor his mount
and called for his mount
وَرَكِبَand rode

وَقَالَ:and said:

أُحَدِّثُكُمْI tell youبِأَعْجُوبَةٍ،of a wonder.

رَأَيْتُI sawالسَّاعَةَjust nowكَأَنَّas ifشَيْخاًan old manأَبْيَضَwhiteالرَّأْسِheadوَاللِّحْيَةِand beard
I saw just now as if an old man with white head and beard, upon him a fur coat and his cloak around his neck.
عَلَيْهِupon himفَرْوَةٌa fur coatوَكِسَاؤُهُand his cloakفِيinعُنُقِهِhis neck
upon him a fur coat and his cloak around his neck.
وَمَعَهُand with himعَصاًa staffوَفِيand inيَدِهِhis handكِتَابٌa book
and with him a staff and in his hand a book.
فَدَنَاHe drew nearمِنِّيto meوَقَدْwhenرَكِبْتُI had ridden
He drew near to me when I had ridden, so I said: Who are you?
فَقُلْتُ:So I said:
So I said: Who are you?
مَنْWhoأَنْتَ؟are you?
Who are you?
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said: Messenger of Al-Abbas with safety, and handed me his book.
رَسُولُMessenger ofالْعَبَّاسِAl-Abbasبِالسَّلَامَةِ،with safety,
Messenger of Al-Abbas with safety,
وَنَاوَلَنِيand handed meكِتَابَهُ.his book.
and handed me his book.
فَقَالَSaidالْمُعْتَصِمُ:Al-Mu'tasim:
Al-Mu'tasim said: I hope Allah will make the dream of the Commander of the Faithful come true and gladden him with his safety.
أَرْجُوI hopeأَنْthatيُخْفِقَmake come trueاللَّهُAllahرُؤْيَاdream ofأَمِيرِCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulوَيُسَرَّهُand gladden himبِسَلَامَتِهِ.with his safety.
I hope Allah will make the dream of the Commander of the Faithful come true and gladden him with his safety.
قَالَ:He said:
He said: Then he stood up, and by Allah, it was only that he went out and traveled a little when he caught sight of an old man approaching him in that state.
ثُمَّThenنَهَضَhe stood up
Then he stood up,
فَوَاللَّهِand by Allahمَاit was notهُوَitإِلَّاexceptأَنْthatخَرَجَhe went outفَسَارَand traveledقَلِيلاًa littleإِلَّاwhenوَبَصُرَhe caught sight ofبِشَيْخٍan old manقَدْwho hadأَقْبَلَapproachedنَحْوَهُtowards himفِيinتِلْكَthatالْحَالِ،state.
and by Allah, it was only that he went out and traveled a little when he caught sight of an old man approaching him in that state.
فَقَالَSaidالْمَأْمُونُ:Al-Ma'mun:
Al-Ma'mun said: This, by Allah, is the one I saw in my dream and this is his description.
هَذَاThisوَاللَّهِby Allahالَّذِيis the oneرَأَيْتُهُI saw himفِيinمَنَامِيmy dreamوَهَذِهِand this isصِفَتُهُ.his description.

قَالَ:He said:
He said: The man drew near to him, so his servants pushed him away and shouted at him.
فَدَنَاDrew nearمِنْهُto himالرَّجُلُthe manفَنَحَّاهُso pushed him awayخَدَمُهُhis servantsوَصَاحُواand shoutedبِهِ.at him.

فَقَالَ:So he said:
So he said: Leave him.
دَعُوهُ.Leave him.

فَجَاءَSo cameالشَّيْخُ،the old man,
So the old man came, and he said to him: Who are you?
فَقَالَand he saidلَهُ:to him:
and he said to him: Who are you?
مَنْWhoأَنْتَ؟are you?

قَالَ:He said:
He said: Messenger of Al-Abbas and this is his book.
رَسُولُMessenger ofالْعَبَّاسِAl-Abbasوَهَذَاand this isكِتَابُهُ.his book.

قَالَ:He said:
He said: So we were astonished and our wonder at it grew long.
فَبُهِتْنَاSo we were astonishedوَطَالَand grew longمِنْهُfrom itتَعَجُّبُنَا.our wonder.

فَقُلْتُ:So I said:
So I said: O Commander of the Faithful, do you invalidate dreams after this?
يَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulأَتُبْطِلُdo you invalidateالرُّؤْيَاthe dreamبَعْدَafterهَذِهِ؟this?
So I said: O Commander of the Faithful, do you invalidate dreams after this?
قَالَ:He said:
He said: No.
لَا.No.
He said: No.
وَحَدَّثَنَاAnd told usعَلِيُّAliبْنُson ofمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadقَالَ:he said:
And Ali bin Muhammad told us: My father told me, from Muhammad bin Abdullah, who said:
حَدَّثَنِيtold meأَبِيmy fatherعَنْfromمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahقَالَ:he said:
My father told me, from Muhammad bin Abdullah, who said:
رَأَيْتُI sawفِيمَاinيَرَىseesالنَّائِمُthe sleeperفِيinآخِرِthe end ofسُلْطَانِrule ofبَنِيBanuأُمَيَّةَUmayyah
I saw in what the sleeper sees at the end of the rule of the Banu Umayyah, as if I entered the mosque of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
كَأَنِّيas if Iدَخَلْتُenteredمَسْجِدَmosque ofرَسُولِMessenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,
as if I entered the mosque of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فَرَفَعْتُso I raisedرَأْسِيmy headوَنَظَرْتُand lookedإِلَىatالْكِتَابِthe writingالَّذِيwhichفَوْقَaboveالْمِحْرَابِthe mihrab
and I raised my head and looked at the writing which is above the mihrab, and behold, there is in it what the Commander of the Faithful Al-Walid bin Abdul-Malik commanded.
فَإِذَاand beholdفِيهِin itمَاwhatأَمَرَcommandedبِهِwith itأَمِيرُCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe FaithfulالْوَلِيدُAl-Walidبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِ،Al-Malik,
and behold, there is in it what the Commander of the Faithful Al-Walid bin Abdul-Malik commanded.
فَإِذَاand beholdقَائِلٌa speakerيَقُولُ:says:
And behold, a speaker says: This writing is erased and in its place is written the name of a man from Banu Hashim called Muhammad.
يُمْحَىis erasedهَذَاthisالْكِتَابُwritingوَيُكْتَبُand is writtenمَكَانَهُin its placeاسْمُname ofرَجُلٍa manمِنْfromبَنِيBanuهَاشِمٍHashimيُقَالُcalledلَهُfor himمُحَمَّدٌ.Muhammad.
This writing is erased and in its place is written the name of a man from Banu Hashim called Muhammad.
فَقُلْتُ:So I said:
So I said: Then I am Muhammad, so son of whom?
فَأَنَاThen I amمُحَمَّدٌ،Muhammad,
Then I am Muhammad, so son of whom?
فَابْنَso son ofمَنْ؟whom?
so son of whom?
قَالَ:He said:
He said: Son of Ali. I said: Then I am the son of Ali, so son of whom?
ابْنُSon ofعَلِيٍّ.Ali.
He said: Son of Ali.
قُلْتُ:I said:
I said: Then I am the son of Ali, so son of whom?
فَأَنَاThen I amابْنُson ofعَلِيٍّ،Ali,
Then I am the son of Ali, so son of whom?
فَابْنَso son ofمَنْ؟whom?
so son of whom?
قَالَ:He said:
He said: Son of Abdullah. I said: Then I am the son of Abdullah, so son of whom?
ابْنُSon ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِ.Allah.
He said: Son of Abdullah.
قُلْتُ:I said:
I said: Then I am the son of Abdullah, so son of whom?
فَأَنَاThen I amابْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِ،Allah,
Then I am the son of Abdullah, so son of whom?
فَابْنَso son ofمَنْ؟whom?
so son of whom?
قَالَ:He said:
He said: Son of Abbas. If I had not reached Abbas, I would not have doubted that I was the master of the affair.
ابْنُSon ofعَبَّاسٍ.Abbas.
He said: Son of Abbas.
فَلَوْIfلَمْnotأَكُنْI hadبَلَغْتُreachedالْعَبَّاسَAl-AbbasمَاI would notشَكَكْتُhave doubtedأَنِّيthat Iصَاحِبُmaster ofالْأَمْرِ،the affair,
If I had not reached Abbas, I would not have doubted that I was the master of the affair.
فَتَحَدَّثْتُso I spokeبِهَذِهِof thisالرُّؤْيَاdreamفِيinذَلِكَthatالدَّهْرِeraوَلَاand notنَعْرِفُwe knowنَحْنُweالْمَهْدِيَّthe Mahdi
So I spoke of this dream in that era, and we did not know the Mahdi, so people spoke of it until Al-Mahdi became ruler.
فَتَحَدَّثَso spokeالنَّاسُthe peopleبِهَاof itحَتَّىuntilوَلِيَbecame rulerالْمَهْدِيُّAl-Mahdi
so people spoke of it until Al-Mahdi became ruler.
فَدَخَلَSo he enteredمَسْجِدَmosque ofرَسُولِMessenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,
So he entered the mosque of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and raised his head.
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فَرَفَعَand raisedرَأْسَهُhis head
and raised his head.
فَإِذَاand beholdاسْمُname ofالْوَلِيدِ،Al-Walid,
And behold, the name of Al-Walid, and I see the name of Al-Walid in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to this day.
وَإِنِّيand indeed Iلَأَرَىseeاسْمَname ofالْوَلِيدِAl-Walidفِيinمَسْجِدِmosque ofرَسُولِMessenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,
and I see the name of Al-Walid in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to this day.
صَلَّىmayاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِbless himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
إِلَىtoالْيَوْمِ،the day,
to this day.
فَدَعَاSo he calledبِكُرْسِيٍّfor a chairفَأُلْقِيَand it was thrownلَهُfor himفِيinصَحْنِcourtyard ofالْمَسْجِدِ،the mosque,
So he called for a chair and it was placed for him in the courtyard of the mosque, and he said:
فَقَالَ:and he said:
and he said:
مَاI am notأَنَاIبِبَارِحٍleavingحَتَّىuntilيُمْحَىis erasedوَيُكْتَبَand is writtenاسْمِيmy nameمَكَانَهُ.in its place.
I am not leaving until it is erased and my name is written in its place.
فَأَمَرَSo he commandedبِأَنْthatيَحْضُرَattendالْعُمَّالُthe workersوَالسَّلَالِيمُand the laddersوَمَاand whatيَحْتَاجُis neededإِلَيْهِto itلِذَلِكَ،for that,
So he commanded that the workers, ladders, and whatever was needed for that should attend.
فَلَمْSo he didيَبْرَحْnot leaveحَتَّىuntilغُيِّرَit was changedوَكُتِبَand was writtenاسْمُهُ.his name.
So he did not leave until it was changed and his name was written.
قَالَ:He said:
He said: And a man saw Abu Dulaf in what the sleeper sees, and said: What is your state?
وَرَأَىAnd sawرَجُلٌa manأَبَاAbuدُلَفَDulafفِيمَاinيَرَاهُsees itالنَّائِمُthe sleeperفَقَالَ:and said:
And a man saw Abu Dulaf in what the sleeper sees, and said: What is your state?
مَاWhatحَالُكَ؟is your state?
What is your state?
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said: So if we, when we die, were left... then death would be the rest of every living being.
فَلَوْSo ifأَنَّاweإِذَاwhenمُتْنَاwe dieتُرِكْنَاwe were left
So if we, when we die, were left... then death would be the rest of every living being.
لَكَانَthen would beالْمَوْتُthe deathرَاحَةَrest ofكُلِّeveryحَيِّliving being.

وَلَكِنَّاAnd but weإِذَاwhenمُتْنَاwe dieبُعِثْنَاwe are resurrected
And but we, when we die, are resurrected... and asked after it about everything.
وَنُسْأَلُand we are askedبَعْدَهُafter itعَنْaboutكُلِّeveryشَيْءٍthing.

He said: And a man saw Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf in what the sleeper sees, and said to him: What is your state?
وَرَأَىAnd sawرَجُلٌa manالْحَجَّاجَAl-Hajjajبْنَson ofيُوسُفَYusufفِيمَاinيَرَاهُsees itالنَّائِمُthe sleeperفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:
And a man saw Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf in what the sleeper sees, and said to him: What is your state?
مَاWhat isحَالُكَ؟your state?
What is your state?
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said: What have you to do with that, may you have no mother!
مَاWhatأَنْتَyouوَذَاكَand thatلَاmayأُمَّmotherلَكَ!to you!
What have you to do with that, may you have no mother!
فَقَالَ:So he said:
So he said: Foolish in the world, foolish in the Hereafter!
سَفِيهٌFoolishفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe worldسَفِيهٌfoolishفِيinالْآخِرَةِ!the Hereafter!
