وََعَنْAnd fromإِسْحَاقَIshaqبْنِson ofإِسْمَاعِيلَIsmailبْنِson ofعَلِيٍّAliقَالَ:he said:

And from Ishaq bin Ismail bin Ali, he said:

حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meعَمِّيmy paternal uncleعِيسَىIsaبْنُson ofعَلِيٍّAliقَالَ:he said:

My paternal uncle Isa bin Ali narrated to me, saying:

دَخَلْتُI enteredعَلَىuponالْمَنْصُورِAl-Mansurفَقَالَ:and he said:

I entered upon Al-Mansur, and he said:

يَاOأَبَاAbuالْعَبَّاسِAl-Abbas

O Abu Al-Abbas,

أَتَذْكُرُdo you rememberرُؤْيَايَmy dreamبِالشَّرَاةِ؟at Al-Sharah?

do you remember my dream at Al-Sharah?

قُلْتُ:I said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulأَيَّwhichالرُّؤْيَا؟dream?

I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, which dream?"

قَالَ:He said:مِثْلُكَsomeone like youيَنْسَاهَا؟forgets it?

He said: "Could someone like you forget it?

كَانَItيَجِبُoughtأَنْtoتَكْتُبَهَاwrite itبِقَلَمٍwith a penمِنْofذَهَبٍgold

You should have written it with a pen of gold

فِيonرَقٍّparchmentوَتُوصِيand enjoinedبِهَاwith itبَنِيكَyour sonsوَبَنِيand sonsبَنِيكَ!of your sons!

on parchment, and enjoined it upon your sons and the sons of your sons!"

قُلْتُ:I said:فَأَخْبِرْنِيso inform meبِهَاof itيَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ!of the Faithful!

I said: "Then tell it to me, O Commander of the Faithful!"

قَالَ:He said:رَأَيْتُI sawكَأَنِّيas ifبِمَكَّةَin Meccaإِذْwhenفُتِحَwas openedبَابُthe doorالْكَعْبَةِof the Kaaba

He said: "I saw as if I were in Mecca when the door of the Kaaba was opened,

فَخَرَجَand out cameرَجُلٌa manفَقَالَ:who said:عَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنُMuhammad.مُحَمَّدٍ.Muhammad.

and a man came out and said: 'Abdullah bin Muhammad.'

فَقُمْتُSo I stood upوَقَامَand stoodأَخِي.my brother.

So I stood up, and my brother stood up.

فَقَالَThen saidالرَّجُلُ:the man:ابْنُThe son ofالْحَارِثِيَّةِ.Al-Harithiyyah.

Then the man said: 'The son of Al-Harithiyyah.'

فَدَخَلَSo enteredأَخِيmy brotherفَأَبْطَأَand tarriedهُنَيْهَةًa little whileثُمَّthenخَرَجَhe came outوَفِيand inيَدِهِhis handلِوَاءٌwas a banner

So my brother entered and tarried a little while, then he came out with a banner in his hand,

فَخَطَاand he tookخُطًىstepsخَمْساًfiveثُمَّthenسَقَطَfellاللِّوَاءُthe bannerمِنْfromيَدِهِ.his hand.

and he took five steps, then the banner fell from his hand.

ثُمَّThenخَرَجَcame outالرَّجُلُthe manبِعَيْنِهِhimselfفَقَالَ:and said:عَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِ،Abdullah,

Then the same man came out and said: 'Abdullah.'

فَقُمْتُSo I stood upوَقَامَand stoodعَمِّيmy paternal uncleعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنُAliعَلِيٍّAliوَصَعِدَand he ascendedالدَّرَجَةَthe step

So I stood up, and my paternal uncle Abdullah bin Ali stood up and ascended the step.

فَزَحَمْتُهُSo I jostled himبِبَعْضِwith some ofأَرْكَانِيmy limbsفَسَبَقْتُand I preceded

I jostled him with some of my body and preceded him,

فَإِذَاand lo and behold,بِأَبِيmy fatherوَإِذَاand lo and behold,رَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay Allahاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِand grant himوَسَلَّمَ.peace.

and there was my father, and there was the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

فَقَالَSo saidلِيto meالرَّجُلُ:the man:ابْدَأْ"Beginبِرَسُولِwith the Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay Allahاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِand grant himوَسَلَّمَ،peace,

The man said to me: 'Begin with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.'

فَسَلَّمْتُso I greetedعَلَيْهِhimفَدَعَاand he calledبِلِوَاءٍfor a bannerفَعَقَدَهُand tied itلِيfor me

So I greeted him, and he called for a banner and tied it for me,

ثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:هَاكَ"Take itفِيكَfor youوَفِيand forوَلَدِكَyour offspringحَتَّىuntilتَقْتُلُواyou killبِهِby means of itالرِّجَالَ.the men."

then he said: 'Take it, for you and your offspring, until you kill men with it.'

فَخَطَوْتُSo I steppedخُطًىstepsلَوْifشِئْتُI wishedأَنْtoأُخْبِرَكُمْinform youبِهَاof themلَأَخْبَرْتُكُمْ.I would have informed you.

So I took steps that, had I wished to inform you of them, I would have informed you.

وَحَدَّثَنَاAnd narrated to usمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُbinيُونُسَYunusقَالَ:he said:

And Muhammad bin Yunus narrated to us, saying:

أَخْبَرَنِيNarrated to meمَنْصُورُMansurبْنُbinأَبِيAbiمُزَاحِمٍMuzahimعَنْfromطَيْفُورَTayfurمَوْلَىthe freed slaveأَبِيof AbuجَعْفَرٍJaafarقَالَ:he said:

Mansur bin Abi Muzahim narrated to me from Tayfur, the freed slave of Abu Jaafar, who said:

قَالَSaidالْمَنْصُورُ:Al-Mansur:رَأَيْتُ"I sawفِيinالسَّنَةِthe yearالَّتِيin whichوَلِيَruledفِيهَاin itهِشَامُHishamبْنُbinعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِAl-Malik

Al-Mansur said: "I saw in the year in which Hisham bin Abd al-Malik ruled,

كَأَنِّيas if Iرَاكِبٌwere ridingحِمَاراًa donkeyأَسْوَدَblackوَعَلَيْهِand upon itحَمْلُwas a loadتِبْنٍof strawعَظِيمٍ،immense,

as if I were riding a black donkey upon which was an immense load of straw.

وَكَانَAnd there wasبِالْمَوْصِلِin Mosulرَجُلٌa manيُعَبِّرُwho interpretedالرُّؤْيَا،dreams,

And there was in Mosul a man who interpreted dreams.

وَحَجَجْتُAnd I performed pilgrimageتِلْكَthatالسَّنَةَyearفَرَأَيْتُهُand I saw himبِمِنًىin Minaوَقَصَصْتُand I relatedعَلَيْهِto himالرُّؤْيَا.the dream.

I performed pilgrimage that year and saw him in Mina, and I related the dream to him.

فَقَالَ:He said:أَخْبِرْنِي"Inform meلِمَنْto whomهَذِهِthisالرُّؤْيَا.dream belongs."

He said: 'Inform me, to whom does this dream belong?'

فَقُلْتُ:So I said:لِرَجُلٍ"To a manمِنْfromأَفْنَاءِthe ordinaryالنَّاسِ.people."

So I said: 'To an ordinary man from the people.'

قَالَ:He said:مَا"You did notقُلْتَsayالْحَقَّ،the truth,اصْدُقْنِيtell me the truthوَأُصْدِقْكَ!and I will tell you the truth!"

He said: 'You did not speak the truth, tell me the truth and I will tell you the truth!'

فَقُلْتُ:So I said:لِرَجُلٍ"To a manمِنْfromبَنِيBanuهَاشِمٍ.Hashim."

So I said: 'To a man from Banu Hashim.'

قَالَ:He said:الآنَ"Nowجِئْتَyou have comeبِالْحَقِّ،with the truth,إِنْifصَدَقَتِwas truthfulالرُّؤْيَاthe dreamصَارَwill becomeصَاحِبُهَاits ownerخَلِيفَةً.a caliph."

He said: 'Now you have come with the truth; if the dream is truthful, its owner will become a caliph.'

قَالَ:He said:فَانْسَلَكْتُSo I slipped awayكَالْهَارِبِlike a fugitiveخَوْفاًfearingأَنْthatيَظْهَرَmight become knownمِنْfromقَوْلِيmy statementوَقَوْلِهِand his statementشَيْءٌ.anything.

He said: 'So I slipped away like a fugitive, fearing that anything of my statement and his statement might become known.'

قَالَ:He said:فَبَيْنَاThen whileالرَّبِيعُAl-Rabiذَاتَoneيَوْمٍdayقَدْhadدَخَلَenteredفَقَالَ:and said:

He said: "Then while Al-Rabi had entered one day, he said:

يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful,رَجُلٌa manبِالْبَابِat the doorمُعَبِّرٌan interpreterيَسْتَأْذِنُ.is asking for permission.

'O Commander of the Faithful, there is a dream interpreter at the door asking for permission.''

قَالَ:He said:أَدْخِلْهُ."Admit him."

He said: 'Admit him.'

فَأَدْخَلَهُSo he admitted himفَلَمَّاand whenرَآهُhe saw himتَبَسَّمَhe smiledوَقَالَ:and said:هَذَا"This isصَاحِبِي.my companion."

So he admitted him, and when he saw him, he smiled and said: 'This is my companion.'

فَدَنَاHe drew nearمِنْهُto himوَقَبَّلَand kissedيَدَهُ.his hand.

He drew near to him and kissed his hand.

فَقَالَ:He said:أَتَذْكُرُ"Do you rememberرُؤْيَايَ؟my dream?"

He said: 'Do you remember my dream?'

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,وَهِيَand it isالَّتِيthat whichحَمَلَتْنِيbrought meإِلَيْكَ.to you."

He said: 'Yes, and it is what brought me to you.'

قَالَ:He said:كَيْفَ"Howكُنْتَwereتَأُوِّلُهَا؟you interpreting it?"

He said: 'How were you interpreting it?'

قَالَ:He said:قُلْتُ"I saidرَاكِبُa rider ofحِمَارٍa donkeyأَسْوَدَblackوَالْحِمَارُand the donkeyجَدُّis the ancestor ofالرَّجُلِthe manوَسَوَادُهُand its blacknessسُؤْدُدٌ،is nobility,

He said: 'I said, a rider of a black donkey, and the donkey is the man's ancestor, and its blackness is nobility.

قُلْتُand I saidوَكَانَthere wasعَلَىuponالْحِمَارِthe donkeyتِبْنٌstrawفَقُلْتُand I saidالْحِنْطَةُwheatوَالشَّعِيرُand barleyيَخْرُجَانِcome outمِنَfromالتِّبْنِthe straw

I said, there was straw upon the donkey, and I said, wheat and barley come out from the straw,

وَقَعَدَand he satعَلَيْهِupon itوَمَنْand whoeverصَارَbecomesمَالِكَهُits ownerفَقَدْhasمَلَكَpossessedالْأَقْوَاتَprovisionsفَهَذَاso this isرَجُلٌa manيَمْلِكُwho will ruleالنَّاسَ.the people."

and he sat upon it, and whoever becomes its owner has possessed provisions, so this is a man who will rule the people."

قَالَ:He said:لِلَّهِ"By Allahأَبُوكَyour fatherمَاhowأَحْسَنَexcellentمَاisعَبَّرْتَyour interpretationوَأَسْرَعَand how swiftمَاisصَحَحْتَ!your verification!"

He said: "May your father be praised, how excellent was your interpretation and how swift your verification!"

وَأَمَرَAnd he orderedلَهُfor himبِصِلَةٍa rewardوَقَالَ:and said:أَقِمْ"Stayعِنْدَنَاwith usوَحَوِّلْand moveعِيَالَكَyour familyفِإِنَّاfor indeed weنَأْمُرُwill decreeلَكَfor youبِأَرْزَاقٍprovisionsتَسَعُكَthat will suffice youوَإِيَّاهُمْ.and them."

And he ordered a reward for him and said: "Stay with us and move your family, for indeed we will decree provisions for you that will suffice you and them."

فَفَعَلَSo he didذَلِكَ.that.

So he did that.

وَبَلَغَنَاAnd it reached usعَنْfromمُزَاحِمٍMuzahimمَوْلَىthe freed slaveفَاطِمَةَof Fatimahقَالَتْ:she said:

And it reached us from Muzahim, the freed slave of Fatimah, who said:

كُنْتُI wasمَعَwithعُمَرَUmarبْنِbinعَبْدِAbdالْعَزِيزِAl-Azizوَهْوَwhile heنَائِمٌwas sleepingفَانْتَبَهَso he woke upوَقَالَ:and said:

"I was with Umar bin Abd al-Aziz while he was sleeping, and he woke up and said:

يَاOفَاطِمَةُFatimah,لَقَدْindeedرَأَيْتُI sawرُؤْيَاa dreamمَاwhatرَأَيْتُI sawأَحْسَنَmore beautifulمِنْهَا.than it.

'O Fatimah, indeed I saw a dream, the like of which in beauty I have not seen.'

قُلْتُ:I said:حَدِّثْنِي"Narrateبِهَاit to meيَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ.of the Faithful."

I said: 'Narrate it to me, O Commander of the Faithful.'

قَالَ:He said:حَتَّى"Untilأُصْبِحَ.I wake in the morning."

He said: 'Until I reach the morning.'

قَالَ:He said:فَجَاءَso cameالْمُنَادِيthe callerفَنَادَاهُand called himبِالصَّلَاةِto prayerفَقَامَso he stoodفَصَلَّىand prayedبِالنَّاسِwith the peopleالْفَجْرَAl-Fajrثُمَّthenرَجَعَreturnedإِلَىtoمَجْلِسِهِ.his sitting place.

He said: So the caller came and called him to prayer, and he stood and led the people in the Fajr prayer, then returned to his sitting place.

فَأَتَيْتُهُSo I came to himفَقُلْتُ:and said:يَا"OأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulحَدِّثْنِيnarrate to meبِالرُّؤْيَا.the dream."

So I came to him and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, narrate the dream to me."

فَقَالَ:He said:رَأَيْتُ"I sawكَأَنِّيas if Iفِيwere inأَرْضٍa landخَضْرَاءَgreenلَمْneverأَرَزْhave I seenأَرْضاًa landأَحْسَنَmore beautifulمِنْهَا،than it,

He said: 'I saw as if I were in a green land, the like of whose beauty I had never seen,

وَرَأَيْتُand I sawفِيinتِلْكَthatالْأَرْضِlandقُصُورَpalacesزَبَرْجَدٍof peridotوَرَأَيْتُand I sawجَمِيعَallالْخَلَائِقِthe creationحَوْلَaroundذَلِكَthatالْقَصْرِ،palace.

and I saw in that land palaces of peridot, and I saw all creation around that palace.

فَبَيْنَاThen whileأَنَاIكَذَلِكَwas thusإِذْwhenنَادَىcalled outمُنَادٍa callerمِنَfromالْقَصْرِ:the palace:

Then while I was thus, a caller called out from the palace:

أَيْنَ"Where isمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُbinعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنِAbd al-Muttalib?"عَبْدِAbdالْمُطَّلِبِ؟al-Muttalib?

'Where is Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib?'

فَقَامَSo stood upالنَّبِيُّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allahاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِand grant himوَسَلَّمَ،peace,فَدَخَلَand enteredالْقَصْرَ،the palace.

So the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood up and entered the palace.

فَقُلْتُ:I said:سُبْحَانَ"Glory beاللَّهِ!to Allah!إِنَّاIndeed, weفِيare inمَلَإٍa gatheringفِيهِمْamong whom isرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay Allahاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِand grant himوَسَلَّمَ،peace,وَلَمْand I did notأُسَلِّمْgreetعَلَيْهِ!him!"

I said: 'Glory be to Allah! We are in a gathering among whom is the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and I did not greet him!'

فَلَمْI tarriedأَلْبَثْnotإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلاًa littleحَتَّىuntilخَرَجَcame outالْمُنَادِيthe callerفَنَادَى:and called:

I tarried only a little while until the caller came out and called:

أَيْنَ"Where isأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍBakrالصِّدِّيقُ؟al-Siddiq?"

'Where is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq?'

فَقَامَSo stood upأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercyاللَّهُ،upon him,فَدَخَلَ،and entered,

So Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy upon him, stood up and entered,

فَمَاand I tarriedلَبِثْتُnotإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلاًa littleحَتَّىuntilخَرَجَcame outالْمُنَادِيthe callerفَنَادَى:and called:

and I tarried only a little while until the caller came out and called:

أَيْنَ"Where isعُمَرُUmarبْنُbinالْخَطَّابِ؟al-Khattab?"

'Where is Umar bin al-Khattab?'

فَقَامَSo stood upعُمَرُUmarفَدَخَلَ،and entered,فَقُلْتُ:and I said:سُبْحَانَ"Glory beاللَّهِ!to Allah!

So Umar stood up and entered, and I said: 'Glory be to Allah!

إِنَّاIndeed, weفِيare inجَمْعٍa gatheringفِيهِمْamong whom isأَبِيmy fatherوَلَمْand I did notأُسَلِّمْgreetعَلَيْهِ!him!"

We are in a gathering among whom is my father, and I did not greet him!'

فَمَاAnd he tarriedلَبِثَnotإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلاًa littleحَتَّىuntilخَرَجَcame outالْمُنَادِيthe callerفَنَادَى:and called:

And he tarried only a little while until the caller came out and called:

أَيْنَ"Where isعُثْمَانُUthmanبْنُbinعَفَّانَ؟Affan?"

'Where is Uthman bin Affan?'

فَقَامَSo stood upعُثْمَانُ،Uthman,رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercyاللَّهُ،upon him,فَدَخَلَ،and entered,فَمَاand I tarriedلَبِثْتُnotإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلاًa littleحَتَّىuntilخَرَجَcame outالْمُنَادِيthe callerفَنَادَى:and called:

So Uthman, may Allah have mercy upon him, stood up and entered, and I tarried only a little while until the caller came out and called:

أَيْنَ"Where isعَلِيُّAliبْنُbinأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍ؟Talib?"

'Where is Ali bin Abi Talib?'

فَقَامَSo stood upعَلِيٌّAliفَدَخَلَ،and entered,فَمَاand I tarriedلَبِثْتُnotإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلاًa littleحَتَّىuntilخَرَجَcame outالْمُنَادِيthe callerفَنَادَى:and called:

So Ali stood up and entered, and I tarried only a little while until the caller came out and called:

أَيْنَ"Where isعُمَرُUmarبْنُbinعَبْدِAbdالْعَزِيزِ؟al-Aziz?"

'Where is Umar bin al-Aziz?'

فَقُمْتُSo I stood upفَدَخَلْتُand enteredفَرَأَيْتُand I sawالنَّبِيَّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allahاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِand grant himوَسَلَّمَ،peace,قَاعِداًseated

So I stood up and entered, and I saw the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, seated,

وَرَأَيْتُand I sawأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍBakrعَنْonيَمِينِهِhis rightوَعُمَرَand Umarعَنْonيَسَارِهِhis leftوَعُثْمَانَand Uthmanوَعَلِيّاًand Aliبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْهِ،him,

and I saw Abu Bakr on his right and Umar on his left, and Uthman and Ali before him.

فَقُلْتُ:I said:أَيْنَ"Whereأَقْعُدُ؟shall I sit?لَاI will notأَقْعُدُsitإِلَّاexceptإِلَىbesideجَنْبِmy father."أَبِي،my father,

I said: 'Where shall I sit? I will sit nowhere except beside my father.'

قَالَ:He said:فَقَعَدْتُ"So I satعِنْدَbyعُمَرَUmarبْنِbinالْخَطَّابِ،al-Khattab,"

He said: 'So I sat by Umar bin al-Khattab.'

فَرَأَيْتُAnd I sawفِيمَاinبَيْنَbetweenالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allahاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِand grant himوَسَلَّمَ،peace,وَأَبِيand AbuبَكْرٍBakrشَابّاًa young manحَسَنَhandsomeالْوَجْهِ،of face,

And I saw between the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and Abu Bakr a young man of handsome face.

فَقُلْتُ:I said:يَا"Oأَبَةِfather,مَنْwho isهَذَا؟this?"

I said: 'O father, who is this?'

قَالَ:He said:هَذَا"This isعِيسَىIsaبْنُson ofمَرْيَمَ،Mary,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ.be peace."

He said: 'This is Isa son of Mary, upon him be peace.'

قَالَ:He said:فَمَا"So I tarriedلَبِثْتُnotإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلاًa littleحَتَّىuntilسَمِعْتُI heardمُنَادِياًa callerيُنَادِي:calling out:

He said: 'So I tarried only a little while until I heard a caller calling out:

يَا"OعُمَرُUmarبْنَbinعَبْدِAbdالْعَزِيزِal-Aziz,اثْبُتْremain steadfastعَلَىuponمَاwhatأَنْتَyouعَلَيْهِ.are upon."

O Umar bin Abd al-Aziz, remain steadfast upon what you are upon."

قَالَ:He said:ثُمَّThenقُمْتُI stood upفَخَرَجْتُand came outفَلَمْand I tarriedأَلْبَثْnotإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلاًa littleحَتَّىuntilخَرَجَcame outعَلَيَّto meعُثْمَانُUthman

He said: "Then I stood up and came out, and I tarried only a little while until Uthman came out to me

وَهُوَwhile heيَقُولُ:was saying:الْحَمْدُ"Praiseلِلَّهِbe to Allahالَّذِيwhoنَصَرَنِي.has given me victory."

and was saying: 'Praise be to Allah who has given me victory.'

ثُمَّThenلَمْI tarriedأَلْبَثْnotإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلاًa littleحَتَّىuntilخَرَجَcame outعَلَيَّto meعَلِيُّAliبْنُbinأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍTalibرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith himعَنْهُ،and grant him peace,

Then I tarried only a little while until Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, came out to me

فَقَالَ:and said:الْحَمْدُ"Praiseلِلَّهِbe to Allahالَّذِيwhoغَفَرَhas forgivenلِي!me!"

and said: 'Praise be to Allah who has forgiven me!'

مَسَاوِئُThe evils ofالرُّؤْيَاthe dream

The evils of the dream
