قِيلَ:It was said:

أَخَذَtookمُصْعَبُMus'abبْنُson ofالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubayrرَجُلاًa manمِنْfromأَصْحَابِcompanions ofالْمُخْتَارِal-Mukhtarبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiعُبَيْدٍUbayd
Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr took a man from the companions of al-Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd
فَأَمَرَand he orderedبِضَرْبِthe striking ofعُنُقِهِhis neck
and ordered his neck to be struck.
فَقَالَ:So he said:أَيُّهَاOالْأَمِيرُPrince
So he said, "O Prince,
مَاhowأَقْبَحَuglyبِكَis it of youأَنْthatأَقُومَI standيَوْمَon the Day ofالْقِيَامَةِResurrection
how unseemly of you is it that I stand on the Day of Resurrection
إِلَىbeforeصُورَتِكَyour formهَذِهِthisالْحَسَنَةِbeautiful
before this handsome form of yours
فَأَتَعَلَّقَand I clingبِأَطْرَافِكَto your limbsوَأَقُولَ:and say:
and cling to your limbs and say,
يَاOرَبِّLordسَلْaskمُصْعَباًMus'abفِيمَregarding whyقَتَلَنِي.he killed me.
'O Lord, ask Mus'ab why he killed me.'"
فَقَالَ:He said:اطْلُقُوهُ.Let him go.
He said, "Let him go."
فَقَالَ:He said:أَيُّهَاOالْأَمِيرُPrinceاجْعَلْmakeمَاwhatوَهَبْتَyou grantedلِيto meمِنْofعُمْرِيmy lifeفِيinخَفْضٍ.ease.
He said, "O Prince, make what you have granted me of my life in ease."
فَقَالَ:He said:أَعْطُوهُGive himمِئَةَone hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.
He said, "Give him one hundred thousand dirhams."
قَالَ:He said:بِأَبِيBy my fatherأَنْتَyouوَأُمِّيand my motherأُشْهِدُكَI call you to witnessأَنَّthatلِابْنِfor the son ofقَيْسٍQaysالرُّقَيَاتِal-Ruqayyatمِنْهَاfrom itالنِّصْفَhalfلِقَوْلِهِ:because of his saying:
He said, "By my father and mother, I call you to witness that Ibn Qays al-Ruqayyat has half of it because of his saying:"
إِنَّمَاIndeedمُصْعَبٌMus'abشِهَابٌis a shooting starمِنَfromالل...Al...هْlahتَجَلَّتْare clearedعَنْfromوَجْهِهِhis faceالظَّلْمَاءُthe darkness
Indeed, Mus'ab is a shooting star from Allah, the darkness clears from his face
فَضَحِكَSo laughedمُصْعَبٌMus'abوَقَالَ:and said:لَقَدْIndeedتَلَطَّفْتَyou have been subtleوَإِنَّand indeedفِيكَin youلَمَوْضِعاًis truly a placeلِلصَّنِيعَةِ!for a favor!
So Mus'ab laughed and said, "You have been subtle, and in you there is truly a place for a favor!"
وَأَمَرَAnd he orderedلَهُfor himبِالْمِئَةِwith the hundredالْأَلْفِthousandوَلِابْنِand for the son ofقَيْسٍQaysبِخَمْسِينَwith fiftyأَلْفَthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.
And he ordered the hundred thousand for him and fifty thousand dirhams for Ibn Qays.
وَذُكِرَAnd it was mentionedعَنْaboutأَبِيAbiالْعَبَّاسِal-Abbasالسَّفَّاحِal-Saffahأَنَّهُthat heغَضِبَbecame angryعَلَىatرَجُلٍa manفَذَكَرَهُand mentioned himفِيonلَيْلَةٍa nightمِنَfromاللَّيَالِيthe nights
And it was mentioned about Abu al-Abbas al-Saffah that he became angry at a man and mentioned him on one of the nights
فَقَالَso saidلَهُto himبَعْضُsomeجُلَسَائِهِ:of his companions:يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believers
so some of his companions said to him, "O Prince of the Believers,
إِنَّindeedفُلاناًso-and-soلَوْifرَآهُsaw himأَعْدَىthe most hostileخَلْقِcreation ofاللَّهِAllahلَهُto himلَرَحِمَهُhe would have had mercy on himوَأُنْغِضَand bowedقَلْبُهُhis heartلَهُ.for him.
if the most hostile creation of Allah to him were to see him, he would have had mercy on him and his heart would have bowed for him."
قَالَ:He said:وَلِمَAnd whyذَلِكَ؟that?
He said, "And why is that?"
قَالَ:He said:بِغَضَبِBecause of the anger ofأَمِيرِthe Prince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believersعَلَيْهِ.upon him.
He said, "Because of the anger of the Prince of the Believers upon him."
قَالَ:He said:مَاNotلَهُfor himمِنَofالذَّنْبِsinمَاwhatتَبْلُغُreachesبِهِwith itالْعُقُوبَةُthe punishmentهَذَاthisالْمَبْلَغَ!extent!
He said, "His sin is not such that the punishment should reach this extent!"
قَالَ:He said:مُنُنْBestow favorعَلَيْهِupon himيَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believersبِرِضَاكَ.with your approval.
He said, "Bestow favor upon him, O Prince of the Believers, with your approval."
قَالَ:He said:مَاNotهَذَاthisوَقْتَthe timeذَاكَ.of that.
He said, "This is not the time for that."
قَالَ:He said:يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believersإِنَّكَindeed youلَمَّاwhen youصَغَّرْتَbelittledذَنْبَهُhis sinطَمِعْتُI hopedلَهُfor himفِيinرِضَاكَ.your approval.
He said, "O Prince of the Believers, when you belittled his sin, I hoped for your approval for him."
فَقَالَ:He said:إِنَّهُindeedمَنْwhoeverلَمْdoes notيَكُنْhaveبَيْنَbetweenغَضَبِهِhis angerوَرِضَاهُand his approvalفُرْجَةٌan intervalلَمْdoes not know how toيُحْسِنْdo wellأَنْtoيَغْضَبَbe angryوَلَاand norيَرْضَى،approve,وَعَلَىand uponهَذَاthisأَخْلَاقُare the morals ofالْمُلُوكِ.kings.
He said, "Indeed, whoever does not have an interval between his anger and his approval does not know how to be angry nor how to approve, and upon this are the morals of kings."
قِيلَ:It was said:وَحَضَرَand attendedصَالِحٌSalihالْمُرِّيُّal-Murriمَجْلِسَthe gathering ofالْمَنْصُورِal-Mansurوَعِنْدَهُwhile with himنَفَرٌwere a groupمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofبَيْتِهِhis household
It was said: Salih al-Murri attended the gathering of al-Mansur while a group of the people of his household were with him
وَقَدْand alreadyوَلِيَwas appointedسَعِيدُSaeedبْنُson ofدَعْلَجٍDa'lajأَحْدَاثَthe police/affairs ofالْبَصْرَةِBasra
and Saeed ibn Da'laj had been appointed over the security of Basra
فَدَعَاso he summonedبِنَفَرٍa groupمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالْجِنَايَاتِcrimesلِيُعَاقِبَهُمْ،to punish them,
and he summoned a group of criminals to punish them.
فَلَمَّاSo whenأُتِيَthey were broughtبِهِمْwith themتَحَرَّكَmovedصَالِحٌSalihلِيَقُومَto stand
When they were brought, Salih moved to stand,
فَقَالَso saidلَهُto himرَجُلٌa manمِمَّنْfrom those whoحَضَرَ:attended:أَيْنَWhereتَقُومُ؟are you standing?
so a man from those who attended said to him, "Where are you standing?
وَاللَّهِBy Allahمَاthere is notأَحْتَاجُI needإِلَىofجُلُوسِكَyour sittingعِنْدَهُnear himإِلَّاexceptالسَّاعَةَ.now.
By Allah, your sitting near him is not needed except right now."
فَقَالَ:He said:صَدَقْتَ.You have spoken the truth.
He said, "You have spoken the truth."
وَقَالَ:And he said:يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believers
And he said, "O Prince of the Believers,
إِنَّindeedاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyيَقُولُsaysفِيinكِتَابِهِ:His Book:
indeed Allah, Majestic and Mighty, says in His Book:
""وَالْكَاظِمِينَAnd those who restrainالْغَيْظَthe angerوَالْعَافِينَand those who pardonعَنِtheالنَّاسِpeopleوَاللَّهُand Allahيُحِبُّlovesالْمُحْسِنِينَthe doers of good""
"And those who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good."
فَبَكَىSo weptالْمَنْصُورُal-Mansurحَتَّىuntilاخْضَلَّتْwas soakedلِحْيَتُهُhis beardبِالدُّمُوعِwith tearsوَأَمَرَand he orderedبِتَخْلِيَتِهِمْ.their release.
So al-Mansur wept until his beard was soaked with tears, and he ordered their release.
قِيلَ:It was said:وَأُتِيَAnd was broughtالْمَنْصُورُal-Mansurبِجَانٍwith a criminalفَأَمَرَso he orderedفِيهِconcerning himبِعُقُوبَةٍa punishmentغَلِيظَةٍ.severe.
It was said: A criminal was brought to al-Mansur, and he ordered a severe punishment for him.
فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himالْعَبَّاسُal-Abbasبْنُson ofمُحَمَّدٍ:Muhammad:
Al-Abbas ibn Muhammad said to him,
يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believersإِنَّكَindeed youغَضِبْتَwere angryلِلَّهِfor AllahجَلَّMajesticذِكْرُهُis His mentionفَلَاso do notتَغْضَبْbe angryلَهُfor Himبِأَكْثَرَwith moreمِمَّاthan whatغَضِبَHe was angryلِنَفْسِهِ،for Himself,
"O Prince of the Believers, indeed you became angry for Allah - Majestic is His mention - so do not become angry for Him with more than what He became angry for Himself,
وَقَدْand alreadyتَبَيَّنَhas become clearلَكَto youمَاwhatيَجِبُis dueعَلَىuponمِثْلِهِthe like of himمِنَofالْحَدِّ.the legal punishment.
and what is due upon the like of him of the legal punishment has become clear to you."
فَأَمَرَSo he orderedبِإِطْلَاقِهِ.his release.
So he ordered his release.
قَالَ:He said:وَحَدَّثَنَاand narrated to usالْمَدَائِنِيُّal-Mada'iniقَالَ:he said:
He said: Al-Mada'ini narrated to us, saying:
كَانَwasسَهْلُSahlبْنُson ofسَعْدٍSa'dالْقُشَيْرِيُّal-Qushayriخَرَجَwho went outمَعَwithمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadوَإِبْرَاهِيمَand Ibrahimابْنَيْthe two sons ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahبْنِson ofالْحَسَنِal-Hasanعَلَىagainstالْمَنْصُورِ،al-Mansur,
Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Qushayri had gone out with Muhammad and Ibrahim, the two sons of Abdullah ibn al-Hasan, against al-Mansur.
فَقَالَSo saidالْمَنْصُورُ:al-Mansur:هَذَاThis oneكَانَwasعِنْدَنَاwith usمِنَamongالْفُقَهَاءِthe juristsوَالْعُلَمَاءِand scholarsفَكَيْفَso howخَرَجَdid he go outعَلَيْنَا؟against us?
So al-Mansur said, "This man was among the jurists and scholars with us, so how did he go out against us?"
ثُمَّThenقَالَsaidلَهُto himالْمَنْصُورُ:al-Mansur:وَاللَّهِBy AllahلَأَقْتُلَنَّكَI will surely kill youقَتْلَةًa killingمَاnotقَتَلْتُهَاI killed itأَحَداً!anyone!
Then al-Mansur said to him, "By Allah, I will surely kill you with a killing the like of which I have not killed anyone with!"
فَقَالَ:He said:يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believersأَنْthatتَحْنَثَyou breakفِيinيَمِينِكَyour oathهَذِهِthisخَيْرٌis betterلَكَfor youعِنْدَwithاللَّهِAllahمِنْthanأَنْthatتَبَرَّهَا،you fulfill it,
He said, "O Prince of the Believers, that you break this oath of yours is better for you with Allah than that you fulfill it,
وَاعْلَمْand knowيَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believersأَنَّكَthat youإِنْifقَتَلْتَنِيyou kill meقَتَلْتَyou killأَرْبَعَةَfourآلافِthousandحَدِيثٍhadithsسَمِعْتُهَاI heard themمِنَfromالضَّحَّاكِal-Dahhakبْنِson ofمُزاحِمٍMuzahimعَنْfromجَدِّكَyour grandfatherعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahبْنِson ofالْعَبَّاسِal-Abbasعَنْfromرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke blessingsاللَّهُand peaceعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,لَاnotيَرْوِيهَاnarrates themأَحَدٌanyoneغَيْرِي.other than me.
and know, O Prince of the Believers, that if you kill me, you will kill four thousand hadiths which I heard from al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim from your grandfather Abdullah ibn al-Abbas from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, which no one narrates other than me."
قَالَ:He said:فَوَضَعَSo he placedيَدَهُhis handعَلَىonخَدِّهِhis cheekوَقَالَ:and said:هَاتِ.Bring forth.
He said: So he placed his hand on his cheek and said, "Bring forth [some]."
قَالَ:He said:حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meالضَّحَّاكُal-Dahhakبْنُson ofمُزاحِمٍMuzahimعَنْfromجَدِّكَyour grandfatherعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahبْنِson ofعَبَّاسٍAbbasقَالَ:he said:قَالَsaidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke blessingsاللَّهُand peaceعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:عَمَلُThe work ofالْجَنَّةِParadiseحَزْنٌis roughبِرَبْوَةٍupon a heightوَعَمَلُand the work ofالنَّارِthe Fireسَهْلٌis easyبِسَهْوَةٍ،in a plain,
He said: Al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim narrated to me from your grandfather Abdullah ibn Abbas, he said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "The work of Paradise is rough upon an elevation, and the work of the Fire is easy in a plain,
وَالسَّعِيدُand the fortunate oneمَنْis he whoوُقِيَis protected fromشَرَّthe evil ofالْفِتَنِ،trials,وَمَنْand whoeverابْتُلِيَis testedفَصَبَرَand is patientفَيَاthen howلَهَاgreat is itثُمَّthenيَاhowلَهَا،great is it,وَمَاand notامْتَلَأَis filledعَبْدٌa servantغَيْظاًwith angerفَكَظَمَهُand restrains itإِلَّاexceptمَلَأَهُfills himاللَّهُAllahإِيماناً.with faith.
and the fortunate one is he who is protected from the evil of trials, and whoever is tested and remains patient - then how great is it, then how great is it! And no servant is filled with anger and restrains it except that Allah fills him with faith."
قَالَ:He said:هَاتِ.Bring forth.
He said, "Bring forth [more]."
قَالَ:He said:حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meالضَّحَّاكُal-Dahhakبْنُson ofمُزاحِمٍMuzahimعَنْfromجَدِّكَyour grandfatherعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahبْنِson ofعَبَّاسٍAbbasقَالَ:he said:قَالَsaidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ:Allah:شَرَفُThe honor ofالْمُؤْمِنِthe believerقِيَامُهُis his standingبِاللَّيْلِat nightوَعُزْلَتُهُand his seclusionعَنِfromالنَّاسِ.the people.
He said: Al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim narrated to me from your grandfather Abdullah ibn Abbas, he said: The Messenger of Allah said: "The honor of the believer is his standing in prayer at night and his seclusion from the people."
فَأَمَرَهُSo he ordered himبِالْجُلُوسِto sitثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:هَلْIsمِنْthereأَحَدٍanyoneيَضْمَنُكَwho guarantees youعَلَىon condition thatأَنْthatتَلْزَمَنَاyou stay with usفَتَسْمُرَand converse at nightعِنْدَنَا؟with us?
So he ordered him to sit, then said, "Is there anyone who will vouch for you on the condition that you stay with us and converse with us at night?"
وَأَقَامَAnd he stayedمَعَهُ.with him.
And he stayed with him.
وَقِيلَ:And it was said:إِنَّهُthatسَخِطَbecame displeasedالْمَهْدِيُّal-Mahdiعَلَىwithبَعْضِsomeالْقَحَاطِبَةِof the Qahtabisفَقَالَ:so he said:لَاI doأَرَاهُsee himإِلَّاexceptوَالسَّيْفُwhile the swordمَسْلُولٌis drawnوَالنِّطْعُand the leather matمَنْشُورٌ.is spread out.
And it was said: Al-Mahdi became displeased with one of the Qahtabis, so he said, "I see him only with the sword drawn and the leather execution mat spread out."
فَأُتِيَSo he was broughtبِهِwith himوَقَدْwhileسُلَّwas drawnالسَّيْفُthe swordوُنُشِرَand was spreadالنِّطْعُthe leather matفَبَكَىso he wept
So he was brought while the sword had been drawn and the leather mat spread out, and he wept.
فَقَالَ:So he said:أَلَكَDo you haveمِثْلُthe like ofحَرَكَتِكَyour movementوَتَبْكِي؟and you weep?
He said, "Does the like of your movement [status] belong to you, and you weep?"
فَقَالَ:He said:مَاNotبَكَيْتُdid I weepجَزَعاًout of panicمِنَatالْمَوْتِdeathوَلَكِنْbutبَكَيْتُI weptأَنْthatأَلْقَىI meetاللَّهَAllahوَأَنْتَwhile youسَاخِطٌare displeasedعَلَيَّ.with me.
He said, "I did not weep out of panic from death, but I wept that I should meet Allah while you are displeased with me."
فَقَالَSo saidالْمَهْدِيُّ:al-Mahdi:يَاOغُلَامُboy/servantادْرُجِroll upالنِّطْعَthe leather matوَاغْمِدِand sheatheالسَّيْفَ:the sword:
So al-Mahdi said, "O servant, roll up the leather mat and sheathe the sword:"
إِنَّIndeedالْكَرِيمَthe noble personإِذَاwhenخَادَعْتَهُyou deceive himانْخَدَعَاhe is deceived
Indeed, the noble person when you deceive him is deceived.
قِيلَ:It was said:وَعَاتَبَand reproachedالْمَهْدِيُّal-MahdiشَبِيبَShabibبْنَson ofشَيْبَةَShaybahفِيregardingشَيْءٍsomethingبَلَغَهُthat reached himعَنْهُ.about him.
It was said: Al-Mahdi reproached Shabib ibn Shaybah regarding something that reached him about him.
فَاعْتَذَرَSo he apologizedإِلَيْهِto himوَقَالَ:and said:وَاللَّهِBy Allahلَوْifكَانَthere wasلِيfor meذَنْبٌa sinلَأَقْرَرْتُI would have confessedوَلَكِنْbutعَفْوُthe pardon ofأَمِيرِthe Prince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believersأَسْرَعُis quickerإِلَيَّto meمِنْthanبَرَاءَتِي.my innocence.
So he apologized to him and said, "By Allah, if there were a sin for me, I would have confessed, but the pardon of the Prince of the Believers is quicker to me than my innocence."
وَقَالَAnd saidمُوسَىMusaبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِ:Allah:أُتِيَwas broughtمُوسَىMusaبِرَجُلٍwith a manفَجَعَلَso he beganيُقَرِّرُهُto question himبِذُنُوبِهِabout his sinsوَيُتَهَدِّدُهُ،and threaten him,
Musa ibn Abdullah said: Musa was brought with a man, and he began to question him about his sins and threaten him.
فَقَالَSo saidالرَّجُلُ:the man:يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believersاعْتِذَارِيmy apologyمِمَّاfrom whatتَقْرَعُنِيyou are reproachingبِهِme withرَدٌّis a rejectionعَلَيْكَof youوَإِقْرَارِيand my confessionيُوجِبُnecessitatesلِيfor meذَنْباًa sinوَلَكِنِّيbut Iأَقُولُ:say:
The man said, "O Prince of the Believers, my apology regarding what you are reproaching me with is a rejection of you, and my confession necessitates a sin for me, but I say:"
إِنْIfكُنْتَyou areتَرْجُوhopingفِيinالْعُقُوبَةِpunishmentرَحْمَةًfor mercyفَلَاthen do notتَزْهَدَنَّturn awayعِنْدَatالْمُعَافَاةِgranting pardonفِيfromالْأَجْرِthe reward
If you are hoping for mercy in punishment, then do not turn away from the reward at the time of granting pardon.
فَأَمَرَSo he orderedبِإِطْلَاقِهِ.his release.
So he ordered his release.
