He said: Al-Rashid lowered his head for a long while, deep in thought, while Muhammad watched him as his face brightened at times and cleared at others—his color having changed when he first entered upon him. Then he raised his head and said: I think him truthful, O Muhammad, so command him to set out to the door. He said: And should I be with him? He said: Yes.

So they both entered together. When Abdullah caught sight of Al-Rashid, he turned towards the Qibla and fell down in prostration, then raised his head. Al-Rashid had him draw near, so he approached with his eyes overflowing with tears, flung himself over his carpet, his feet, and the place of his footsteps, and then asked permission to apologize. He said: You have no need to apologize since your excuse has already been known.

He said: Abdullah used to perceive some coldness afterwards when he entered upon Al-Rashid, so he complained of that to Muhammad. Muhammad said: O Commander of the Faithful, indeed your servant Abdullah complains of a remaining trace of that estrangement which came from the Commander of the Faithful, and asks for an increase in his favor. Al-Rashid said: We, the company of kings, when we grow angry with any of our retainers and then become pleased with him, there remains for that anger a trace which neither night nor day can erase.

So the news agent kept it and submitted it to Al-Rashid, who said: He spoke the truth, had I not been asleep, my affairs would not run in this manner. And he ordered the registers to be brought out from the house to him. So the first thing found against Mansur bin Ziyad was ten million dirhams.

I said: O my master, what if he gives me part of it and sets a time for the rest? He said: No.

So I went out and informed him of the news, whereupon he was utterly dismayed and said: He intended nothing except my killing because he knows that the amount of my wealth does not reach what he is demanding of me. However, will you permit me to enter my house to bid farewell to my family? So I permitted him, and he entered, and I entered with him and remained standing. He sent to the mothers of his children, his daughters, and his wives, saying: Come out to me as you used to come out at my death, for this is the last of my days and there is no shield for you after me. So they came out to him with torn collars, scratching their faces with loud wailing. He wept to them and they wept to him and I wept with them, then he bade them farewell and went out while they were in his footsteps placing dust upon their heads. Then he said: O Abu Muqatil, if you would permit me to go to Abu Ali Yahya bin Khalid al-Barmaki so that I might entrust him with my children and family? So I said: Go ahead.
