وَصِرْنَاAnd we arrivedإِلَيْهِto himوَقَدْwhileنَزَلَhe had dismountedفِيinسَاعَتِهِhis hourوَهُوَand he wasعَلَىonكُرْسِيٍّa chairيَغْسِلُwashingيَدَهُ،his hand,
And we arrived to him while he had dismounted in his hour and he was on a chair washing his hand,
فَلَمَّاSo whenتَوَسَّطْنَاwe reached the middle ofالدَّارَthe houseجَعَلَbeganمَنْصُورٌMansurيَبْكِيto weepوَيَمْشِيand walkإِلَيْهِtoward himحَتَّىuntilدَنَاhe drew nearمِنْهُto himوَهُوَwhile he wasيَسْأَلُهُasking himعَنِaboutالْحَالِthe conditionفَيَمْنَعُهُand it prevents himالْبُكَاءُthe weepingمَنْfromإِخْبَارِهِ،informing him,
So when we reached the middle of the house Mansur began to weep and walk toward him until he drew near to him while he was asking him about the condition and the weeping prevents him from informing him,
فَأَقْصَصْتُso I relatedعَلَيْهِto himقِصَّتَهُhis storyفَقَالَ:and he said:ارْجِعْReturnإِلَىtoأَمِيرِthe Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulوَسَلْهُand ask himأَنْthatيَهَبَهُhe grant himلِي.to me.
so I related to him his story and he said: Return to the Commander of the Faithful and ask him that he grant him to me.
قُلْتُ:I said:مَاThere isلِيfor meإِلَىtoذَلِكَthatسَبِيلٌa wayوَلَاand norيَرَانِيdoes he see meإِلَّاexceptوَالْمَالُwhile the wealthمَعِيis with meأَوْorرَأْسُhead ofمَنْصُورٍMansurكَمَاasأَمَرَنِي.he ordered me.
I said: There is for me to that a way and nor does he see me except while the wealth is with me or head of Mansur as he ordered me.
فَقَالَAnd he saidلِخَادِمٍto a servantلَهُ:of his:ائْتِGo toفُلَانَةَso-and-so femaleفَسَلْهَاand ask herكَمْhow muchلَنَاfor usعِنْدَهَاwith herمِنَofالْمَالِ.the wealth.
And he said to a servant of his: Go to so-and-so female and ask her how much for us with her of the wealth.
فَانْصَرَفَSo he departedوَذَكَرَand mentionedأَنَّthatعِنْدَهَاwith herخَمْسَةَfiveآلَافِthousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.
So he departed and mentioned that with her five thousand thousand dirhams.
فَقَالَSo he saidلِي:to me:احْمِلْهَاCarry itوَابْلُغْand conveyأَمِيرَcommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulرِسَالَتِيmy messageفِيregardingبَاقِيهَا.the rest of it.
So he said to me: Carry it and convey commander of the Faithful my message regarding the rest of it.
فَأَعْلَمْتُهُSo I informed himأَنْthatلَاnoسَبِيلَwayإِلَىtoحَمْلِcarryingبَعْضِهَاsome of itدُونَwithoutبَعْضٍ.other.
So I informed him that no way to carrying some of it without other.
فَأَطْرَقَSo he cast his gaze downثُمَّthenرَفَعَhe raisedرَأْسَهُhis headثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:يَاOغُلَامُboyائْتِgo toدَنَانِيرَDananirفَقُلْand sayلَهَاto herتَبْعَثْthat she sendإِلَيَّto meبِالْجَوْهَرِwith the jewelryالَّذِيwhichوَهَبَهُbestowed itلَهَاupon herأَمِيرُCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَ.the Faithful.
So he cast his gaze down then he raised his head then he said: O boy go to Dananir and say to her that she send to me with the jewelry which bestowed it upon her Commander of the Faithful.
فَبَعَثَتْSo she sentإِلَيْهِto himبِحُقَّةٍwith a small boxفَقَالَ:so he said:هَذَاThis isجَوْهَرٌjewelryابْتَعْنَاهُwe bought itلِأَمِيرِfor the Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulبِمِائَتَيْfor two hundredأَلْفِthousandدِينَارٍdinarsوَهُوَand he isعَارِفٌacquaintedبِهِwith itوَقَدْand I haveجَعَلْتُهُmade itلَهُfor himبِمِائَةِfor one hundredأَلْفِthousandدِينَارٍdinarsوَهُوَand it isأَلْفَاtwo thousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams,
So she sent to him with a small box so he said: This is jewelry we bought it for the Commander of the Faithful for two hundred thousand dinars and he is acquainted with it and I have made it for him for one hundred thousand dinars and it is two thousand thousand dirhams,
وَاحْمِلْand carryإِلَيْهِto himهَذِهِthisالسَّبْعَةَsevenالْآلَافِthousandالْأَلْفِthousandوَالرِّسَالَةَ.and the message.
and carry to him this the seven thousand thousand and the message.
فَأَبَيْتُ.So I refused.
So I refused.
فَوَجَّهَSo he sentإِلَىtoالْفَضْلِal-Fadlابْنِهِ:his son:إِنَّكَIndeed youكُنْتَwereأَعْلَمْتَنِيhaving informed meأَنَّكَthat youعَلَىaboutابْتِيَاعِpurchasingضَيْعَةٍan estateنَفِيسَةٍpreciousوَقَدْand you haveأَصَبْتَهَاfound itوَلَاand there is notيُوجَدُfoundمِثْلُهَاits likeفِيinكُلِّeveryوَقْتٍtimeوَابْتِيَاعُهَاand purchasing itفُرْصَةٌan opportunityفَاحْمِلْso bringإِلَيَّto meمَالَهَا.its money.
So he sent to al-Fadl his son: Indeed you were having informed me that you about purchasing an estate precious and you have found it and there is not found its like in every time and purchasing it an opportunity so bring to me its money.
فَعَادَSo returnedالرَّسُولُthe messengerوَمَعَهُand with himأَلْفَاtwo thousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.
So returned the messenger and with him two thousand thousand dirhams.
وَوَجَّهَAnd he sentإِلَىtoجَعْفَرٍJa'farابْنِهِhis sonأَنْthatيُوَجِّهَhe sendإِلَيْهِto himبِأَلْفِwith a thousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.
And he sent to Ja'far his son that he send to him with a thousand thousand dirhams.
فَأَنْفَذَSo he dispatchedإِلَيْهِto himصَكًّاa draftأَوْorصِكَاكَاًdraftsإِلَىtoالْجَهْبِذِthe money changerبِهَا.with it.
So he dispatched to him a draft or drafts to the money changer with it.
فَقَبَضْتُSo I receivedالْمَالَthe wealthوَوَافَيْتُand I arrived toالرَّشِيدَal-Rashidقَبْلَbeforeالْمَغْرِبِsunsetوَهُوَwhile he wasمُنْتَصِبٌstandingعَلَىonحَالَتِهِhis conditionيَنْتَظِرُawaitingرُجُوعِيmy returnإِلَيْهِ.to him.
So I received the wealth and I arrived to al-Rashid before sunset while he was standing on his condition awaiting my return to him.
فَأَخْبَرْتُهُSo I informed himالْخَبَرَof the newsفَلَمَّاand whenانْتَهَيْتُI reachedإِلَىtoخَبَرِthe news ofالْحُقَّةِthe boxقَالَ:he said:صَدَقَHe told the truthوَقَدْand indeedظَنَنْتُI thoughtأَنَّهُthat heلَاnotيُنْجِيهِwill save himغَيْرُهُمْ،anyone other than them,
So I informed him of the news and when I reached to the news of the box he said: He told the truth and indeed I thought that he not will save him anyone other than them,
احْمِلْcarryهَذَاthisالْمَالَwealthأَجْمَعَall of itإِلَىtoأَبِيAbuعَلِيٍّAliوَارْدُدْهُand return itعَلَيْهِto himوَأَعْلِمْهُand let him knowأَنِّيthat IقَدْhaveقَبِلْتُacceptedذَلِكَthatعَنْfromمَنْصُورٍMansurوَرَدَدْتُهُand returned itعَلَيْهِ.to him.
carry this wealth all of it to Abu Ali and return it to him and let him know that I have accepted that from Mansur and returned it to him.
فَفَعَلْتُSo I didذَلِكَ.that.
So I did that.
وَلَقِيَنِيAnd met meبَعْدَafterذَلِكَthatيَحْيَىYahyaمُنْصَرِفاًreturningمِنَfromالدَّارِthe houseوَمَنْصُورٌand Mansurمَعَهُwith himيُسَايِرُهُwalking alongside himوَيُضَاحِكُهُand joking with himوَالنَّاسُand the peopleخَلْفَهُbehind himفَقُلْتُ:so I said:وَاللَّهِBy AllahلَأَنْصَحَنَّI shall surely adviseهَذَاthisالشَّيْخَelderالْكَرِيمَ.noble.
And met me after that Yahya returning from the house and Mansur with him walking alongside him and joking with him and the people behind him so I said: By Allah I shall surely advise this elder noble.
فَدَخَلْتُSo I enteredمَعَهُwith himوَدَخَلَand enteredمَنْصُورٌMansurوَدَعَاand he called forبِغَدَائِهِ،his lunch,
So I entered with him and entered Mansur and he called for his lunch,
فَلَمَّاso whenنَهَضَaroseمَنْصُورٌMansurقُلْتُ:I said:يَاOأَبَاAbuعَلِيٍّAliإِنِّيindeed Iوَاللَّهِby Allahمَاnotرَجَعْتُdid I returnمَعَكَwith youإِلَّاexceptلِنُصْحِكَfor your counselوَقَدْand indeedرَأَيْتُI sawمَكَانَthe place ofهَذَاthisالرَّجُلِmanمِنْكَwith youوَكُنَّاand we wereحِينَwhenحَمَلْتَyou carriedالْمَالَthe wealthأَنْهَضْتُهُI raised himمَعِيwith meفَوَاللَّهِso by Allahمَاnotقَطَعَdid he crossنِصْفَhalfالصَّحْنِof the courtyardمِنَofالدَّارِthe houseحَتَّىuntilتَمَثَّلَhe recitedبِهَذَاwith thisالْبَيْتِ:verse:
so when arose Mansur I said: O Abu Ali indeed I by Allah not did I return with you except for your counsel and indeed I saw the place of this man with you and we were when you carried the wealth I raised him with me so by Allah not did he cross half of the courtyard of the house until he recited with this verse:
فَمَاNot forبُقْيَاsparingعَلَيَّmeتَرَكْتُمَانِيdid you two leave me......وَلَكِنْbutخِفْتُمَاyou two fearedصَرَدَthe coldالنِّبَالِof arrows
Not for sparing me did you two leave me ... but you two feared the cold of arrows
فَعَارَضَSo he metأَكْرَمَmost nobleفِعْلِكَof your deedبِأَلْأَمِwith the basestخَصْلَةٍtraitفِيهِin himفَدَعَانِيso prompted meالِامْتِعَاضُindignationمِنْfromذَلِكَthatإِلَىtoإِخْبَارِكَ،informing you,فَإِنِّيfor I amمَنْone whoتَعَلَّمَwas brought upفِيinمَوَدَّتِكَyour affectionوَطَاعَتِكَ.and obedience to you.
So he met most noble of your deed with the basest trait in him so prompted me indignation from that to informing you, for I am one who was brought up in your affection and obedience to you.
فَأَكَبَّSo he bentعَلَىoverالْأَرْضِthe groundسَاعَةًfor a whileثُمَّthenرَفَعَhe raisedرَأْسَهُhis headفَقَالَ:and said:اعْذُرْهُExcuse himفَقَدْfor indeedكَانَwasعَقْلُهُhis intellectعَزَبَdepartedعَنْهُfrom himفِيatذَلِكَthatالْوَقْتِ.time.
So he bent over the ground for a while then he raised his head and said: Excuse him for indeed was his intellect departed from him at that time.
قَالَ:He said:فَكَانَAnd his excuseعُذْرُهُfor himلَهُwasأَحْسَنَbetterمِنْthanإِحْيَائِهِhis sparingإِيَّاهُ.him.
He said: And his excuse for him was better than his sparing him.
قِيلَ:It was said:وَأَمَرَAnd orderedالرَّشِيدُal-RashidيَحْيَىYahyaبْنَson ofخَالِدٍKhalidبِحَبْسِto imprisonرَجُلٍa manجَنَىwho committedجِنَايَةً.a crime.
It was said: And ordered al-Rashid Yahya son of Khalid to imprison a man who committed a crime.
فَحَبَسَهُSo he imprisoned himيَحْيَىYahyaوَسَأَلَهُand asked himعَنْهُabout himالرَّشِيدُal-Rashidفَقِيلَ:so it was said:هُوَHe isكَثِيرُabundant inالصَّلَاةِprayerوَالدُّعَاءِ.and supplication.
So he imprisoned him Yahya and asked him about him al-Rashid so it was said: He is abundant in prayer and supplication.
فَقَالَSo he saidلِلْمُوَكَّلِto the one entrustedبِهِ:with him:اعْرِضْProposeعَلَيْهِto himأَنْthatيُكَلِّمَنِيhe speak to meوَيَسْأَلَنِيand ask meإِطْلَاقَهُ.his release.
So he said to the one entrusted with him: Propose to him that he speak to me and ask me his release.
فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himذَلِكَthatالْمُوَكَّلُthe one entrustedبِهِwith himفَقَالَ:and he said:قُلْSayلِأَمِيرِto the Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulإِنَّthatكُلَّeveryيَوْمٍdayيَمْضِيpassingمِنْofنِعْمَتِكَyour bountyيَنْقُصُdetractsمِنْfromمِحْنَتِيmy trialوَالْأَمْرُand the matterقَرِيبٌis nearوَالْمَوْعِدُand the appointed placeالصِّرَاطُis the Sirat bridgeوَالْحُكْمُand the judgmentاللَّهُ.is to Allah.
So said to him that the one entrusted with him and he said: Say to the Commander of the Faithful that every day passing of your bounty detracts from my trial and the matter is near and the appointed place is the Sirat bridge and the judgment is to Allah.
فَخَرَّSo fellالرَّشِيدُal-Rashidسَاجِداًprostratingمَغْشِيّاًfaintingعَلَيْهِoverوَأَمَرَand orderedبِإِطْلَاقِهِ.his release.
So fell al-Rashid prostrating fainting over and ordered his release.
قِيلَ:It was said:وَأُتِيَAnd was broughtالرَّشِيدُal-Rashidبِرَجُلٍwith a manقَدْwhoوَجَبَbecame dueعَلَيْهِupon himالْحَدُّthe legal punishmentفَأَمَرَso he orderedأَنْthatيُضْرَبَhe be struckفَضُرِبَ.so he was struck.
It was said: And was brought al-Rashid with a man who became due upon him the legal punishment so he ordered that he be struck so he was struck.
فَقَالَ:So he said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulقَتَلْتَنِي!you have killed me!
So he said: O Commander of the Faithful you have killed me!
قَالَ:He said:الْحَقُّThe truthقَتَلَكَ.killed you.
He said: The truth killed you.
قَالَ:He said:ارْحَمْنِي!Have mercy on me!
He said: Have mercy on me!
قَالَ:He said:لَسْتُI am notبِأَرْحَمَmore mercifulلَكَto youمِمَّنْthan the one whoأَوْجَبَmade obligatoryعَلَيْكَupon youالْحَدَّ.the legal punishment.
He said: I am not more merciful to you than the one who made obligatory upon you the legal punishment.
ثُمَّThenأَمَرَhe orderedبِإِطْلَاقِهِ.his release.
Then he ordered his release.
قَالَ:He said:وَقَالَand saidالرَّشِيدُal-Rashidلِلْجَهْجَاهِ:to al-Jahjah:أَزِنْدِيقٌAre you a hereticأَنْتَ؟you?
He said: and said al-Rashid to al-Jahjah: Are you a heretic you?
فَقَالَ:So he said:كَيْفَHowأَنَاam Iزِنْدِيقٌa hereticوَقَدْwhileقَرَأْتُI have readالْقُرْآنَthe Quranوَفَرَضْتُand institutedالْفَرَائِضَthe religious dutiesوَفَرَّقْتُand distinguishedبَيْنَbetweenالْحُجَّةِthe proofوَالشُّبْهَةِ؟and the doubt?
So he said: How am I a heretic while I have read the Quran and instituted the religious duties and distinguished between the proof and the doubt?
قَالَ:He said:وَاللَّهِBy AllahلَأَضْرِبَنَّكَI shall surely beat youحَتَّىuntilتُقِرَّ!you confess!
He said: By Allah I shall surely beat you until you confess!
فَقَالَ:So he said:هَذَاThis isخِلَافُcontrary toمَاwhatأَمَرَorderedاللَّهُAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Exaltedبِهِ،with it,أَمَرَHe orderedأَنْthatيُضْرَبَbe struckالنَّاسُthe peopleحَتَّىuntilيُقِرُّواthey confessبِالْإِيمَانِto faithوَأَنْتَand youتَضْرِبُنِيare beating meحَتَّىuntilأُقِرَّI confessبِالْكُفْرِ!to disbelief!
So he said: This is contrary to what ordered Allah Majestic and Exalted with it, He ordered that be struck the people until they confess to faith and you are beating me until I confess to disbelief!
فَالْتَفَتَSo turnedالْجَهْجَاهُal-JahjahإِلَىtowardأَبِيAbuيُوسُفَYusufالْقَاضِيthe judgeفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:افْتِهِGive a legal ruling concerning himلَاlestيَهْلِكَperishفِيَّregarding meدِينُهُ.his religion.
So turned al-Jahjah toward Abu Yusuf the judge and said to him: Give a legal ruling concerning him lest perish regarding me his religion.
قَالَ:He said:وَبَلَغَand reachedالرَّشِيدَal-RashidأَنَّthatعَبْدَAbdالْمَلِكِal-Malikبْنَson ofصَالِحٍSalihدَعَاcalledإِلَىtoنَفْسِهِhimselfفَأَمَرَso he orderedبِحَبْسِهِhis imprisonmentثُمَّthenدَعَاهُhe called himذَاتَoneيَوْمٍdayفَقَالَ:and said:أَكُفْراًIs it ingratitudeلِلنِّعْمَةِfor the bountyوَإِظْهَاراًand displayلِلْغَدْرِ؟of treachery?
He said: and reached al-Rashid that Abd al-Malik son of Salih called to himself so he ordered his imprisonment then he called him one day and said: Is it ingratitude for the bounty and display of treachery?
قَالَ:He said:كَلَّاBy no meansيَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulوَلَكِنَّهُrather it isمَقَالَةُspeech ofكَاشِحٍan enemyوَاحْتِيَالُand scheming ofحَاسِدٍ.an envious person.
He said: By no means O Commander of the Faithful rather it is speech of an enemy and scheming of an envious person.
قَالَ:He said:هَذَاThis isقُمَامَةُQumamaكَاتِبُكَyour scribeيَذْكُرُmentioningصِحَّةَthe truth ofذَلِكَ.that.
He said: This is Qumama your scribe mentioning the truth of that.
قَالَ:He said:أَسْمِعْنِيهِLet me hear himيَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَ!the Faithful!
He said: Let me hear him O Commander of the Faithful!
قَالَ:He said:اخْرُجْCome outيَاOقُمَامَةُ.Qumama.
He said: Come out O Qumama.
وَكَانَAnd he wasمِنْfromوَرَاءِbehindالسِّتْرِ.the curtain.
And he was from behind the curtain.
فَخَرَجَSo he came outفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:لَقَدْIndeedانْطَوَيْتَyou harboredعَلَيْهِitوَوَاطَأْتَand conspired withمَنْwhoeverخَالَفَهُ.opposed him.
So he came out and said to him: Indeed you harbored it and conspired with whoever opposed him.
قَالَ:He said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulكَيْفَhowلَاnotيَكْذِبُwould lieعَلَيَّagainst meمَنْsomeone whoخَلْفِيis behind meمَنْwhenيَبهَتُنِيhe slanders meفِيtoوَجْهِيmy faceمَعَdespiteنِعْمَتِيmy bountyعَلَيْهِupon himوَإِحْسَانِيand my goodnessإِلَيْهِ؟to him?
He said: O Commander of the Faithful how not would lie against me someone who is behind me when he slanders me to my face despite my bounty upon him and my goodness to him?
قَالَ:He said:فَهَذَاThen this isعَبْدُAbdالرَّحْمَنِal-Rahmanابْنُكَ!your son!
He said: Then this is Abd al-Rahman your son!
فَقَالَ:So he said:هُوَHe isبَيْنَeitherمَأْمُورٍone commandedوَعَاقٍّ،or disobedient,فَإِنْso ifكَانَhe wasمَأْمُوراًcommandedفَلَاthen noذَنْبَsinلَهُ،is his,وَإِنْand ifكَانَhe wasعَاقّاًdisobedientفَأَقَلُّthen the least ofعُقُوبَتِهِhis punishmentالشَّهَادَةُis bearing testimonyبِالزُّورِfalselyعَلَيَّ.against me.
So he said: He is either one commanded or disobedient, so if he was commanded then no sin is his, and if he was disobedient then the least of his punishment is bearing testimony falsely against me.
قَالَ:He said:فَمَاThen what isالْحُكْمُ؟the judgment?
He said: Then what is the judgment?
قَالَ:He said:أَوْلَىMost deserving ofالنَّاسِpeopleبِصَفْحِكَof your pardonعَنْهُconcerning himمَنْis the one whoلَاnotشَفِيعَintercessorلَهُfor himإِلَيْكَto youإِلَّاexceptحِلْمُكَ.your clemency.
He said: Most deserving of people of your pardon concerning him is the one who not intercessor for him to you except your clemency.
فَقَالَSo saidالرَّشِيدُ:al-Rashid:
So said al-Rashid:
أُرِيدُI desireحَيَاتَهُhis lifeوَيُرِيدُand he desiresقَتْلِيmy death......عَذِيرُكَwho will excuse youمِنْfromخَلِيلِكَyour friendمِنْfromمُرَادٍMurad
I desire his life and he desires my death ... who will excuse you from your friend from Murad
