وَاللَّهِBy Allah,لَكَأَنِّيit is indeed as ifأَنْظُرُI lookإِلَىatشُؤْبُوبِهَاits downpour
By Allah, it is indeed as if I am looking at its downpour when it has poured,
قَدْhasهَمَعَpouredوَإِلَىand atعَارِضِهَاits cloudقَدْhasلَمَعَgleamed,
and its cloud when it has gleamed,
وَكَأَنِّيand as ifبِالْوَعِيدِwith the threatقَدْhasأَوْرَىkindledنَاراًa fire
and as if the threat has kindled a fire
فَأَقْلَعَthen refrainedعَنْfromبَرَاجِمَknucklesبِلَاwithoutمَعَاصِمَwrists
then refrained from knuckles without wrists
وَرُؤُوسٍand headsبِلَاwithoutغَلَاصِمَ،throats,
and heads without throats,
مَهْلاًslowlyمَهْلاًslowlyبَنِيsons ofهَاشِمٍHashim,
slowly, slowly, O sons of Hashim,
فَبِيfor through meسَهَّلَmade easyاللَّهُAllahالْوَعْرَthe rugged terrain
for through me Allah has made easy the rugged terrain
وَصَفَّىand clarifiedالْكَدَرَthe turbid,وَأَلْقَتِand castالْأُمُورُaffairsأَزِمَّتَهَا.their reins.
and clarified the turbid, and affairs have cast their reins.
نِذَارِBewareمِنْofحُلُولِthe befalling ofدَاهِيَةٍa calamityخَبُوطٍstrikingبِالْيَدِwith the handلَبُوطٍkickingبِالرِّجْلِ.with the foot.
Beware of the befalling of a calamity that strikes with the hand and kicks with the foot.
فَقَالَSo saidعَبْدُAbdالْمَلِكِ:al-Malik:أَفَذّاًindividuallyأَتَكَلَّمُdo I speakأَمْorتَوْأَماً؟in pairs?
Abd al-Malik said: Do I speak individually or in pairs?
قَالَ:He said:بَلْRather,تَوْأَماً.in pairs.
He said: Rather, in pairs.
فَقَالَ:He said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful,اتَّقِfearاللَّهَAllahفِيمَاregarding whatوَلَّاكَ،He entrusted you with,
He said: O Commander of the Faithful, fear Allah regarding what He has entrusted you with,
وَرَاقِبْهُand be mindful of Himفِيمَاregarding whatاسْتَرْعَاكَ،He made you shepherd of,وَلَاand do notتَجْعَلِmakeالشُّكْرَgratitudeبِمَوْضِعِin the place ofالْكُفْرِ،ingratitude,
and be mindful of Him regarding what He has made you shepherd of, and do not place gratitude in the position of ingratitude,
وَلَاand do notالثَّوَابَrewardبِمَحَلِّin the place ofالْعِقَابِ،punishment,
and do not place reward in the place of punishment,
وَاللَّهَand AllahاللَّهَAllahفِيregardingرَحِمِكَyour kinshipأَنْthatتَقْطَعَهَاyou sever itبَعْدَafterأَنْthatوَصَلْتَهَاyou joined itبِظَنٍّdue to a suspicionيُؤْثِمُthat brings sin
and fear Allah regarding your kinship, that you might sever it after having joined it due to a sinful suspicion
ثُمَّthenتَقُولُyou sayبَاغٍan aggressorيَنْهَسُwho tearsاللَّحْمَthe fleshوَوَلَغَand lappedفِيinالدَّمِ،blood,
then say: An aggressor who tears the flesh and lapped in blood,
فَقَدْfor indeedجَمَعْتَyou have gatheredالْقُلُوبَheartsعَلَىuponمَحَبَّتِكَyour loveوَذَلَّلْتَand subduedالرِّجَالَmenلِطَاعَتِكَto your obedience
for indeed you have gathered hearts upon your love and subdued men to your obedience,
وَكُنْتَand you wereكَمَاasقَالَsaidأَخُوthe brother ofكِلَابٍKilabلَبِيدُLabidبْنُson ofرَبِيعَةَ:Rabi'ah:
and you were as the brother of Kilab, Labid ibn Rabi'ah, said:
وَمَقَامٍAnd a standingضَيِّقٍstraitenedفَرَّجْتُهُI relieved it......بِلِسَانِيwith my tongueوَبَيَانِيand my eloquenceوَجَدَلِيand my argumentation
And a straitened standing I relieved... with my tongue, eloquence, and argumentation.
لَوْIfيَقُومُstandsالْفِيلُthe elephantأَوْorفَيَّالُهُits handler......زَلَّwould slipعَنْfromمِثْلِيthe likes of meمَقَامِيmy stationوَزَجَلِيand my clamor
If the elephant or its handler were to stand... my station and clamor would cause the likes of me to slip.
فَوَثَبَThen leapedالرَّشِيدُal-Rashidمِنْfromمَجْلِسِهِhis seatوَاعْتَنَقَهُand embraced him
Then al-Rashid leaped from his seat and embraced him
وَجَعَلَand beganيُقَبِّلُkissingمَاwhatبَيْنَis betweenعَيْنَيْهِhis eyesوَيَسْتَرْجِعُand reciting 'Inna lillah'وَيَعْتَذِرُand apologizing
and began kissing between his eyes, reciting 'Inna lillah', apologizing,
ثُمَّthenخَلَعَbestowedعَلَيْهِupon himحُلَلَrobes ofالرِّضَىapprovalوَتَنَفَّسَand he breathedالصُّعَدَاءَa deep sighوَقَالَ:and said:
then bestowed upon him robes of approval, breathed a deep sigh, and said:
وَاللَّهِBy Allah,لَقَدْindeedدَعَوْتُهُI called himوَإِنِّيwhile Iلَأَرَىsawمَوْضِعَthe place ofالسَّيْفِthe swordمِنْatقَفَاهُhis nape
By Allah, I had indeed called him while I saw the place of the sword at his nape,
وَهَاand hereأَنَاam Iذَاnowنَادِمٌremorsefulعَلَىforمَاwhatكَانَwasمَنِّي،from me,
and here I am now remorseful for what came from me,
وَاللَّهُand AllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mighty is Heيَتَجَاوَزُwill overlookبِقُدْرَتِهِby His powerعَنْthatذَلِكَ.over.
and may Allah, Majestic and Mighty is He, overlook that by His power.
قَالَ:He said:وَظَفِرَAnd capturedالْمَأْمُونُal-Ma'munبِرَجُلٍa manكَانَwho wasيَطْلُبُهُ،seeking him,
He said: Al-Ma'mun captured a man he had been seeking,
فَلَمَّاso whenدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَيْهِupon himقَالَ:he said:يَاOعَدُوَّenemy ofاللَّهِAllah,أَنْتَyou areالَّذِيthe one whoتُفْسِدُcauses corruptionفِيinالْأَرْضِthe earthبِغَيْرِwithoutحَقٍّ،right,
and when he entered upon him, he said: O enemy of Allah, you are the one who causes corruption in the earth without right.
يَاOغُلَامُboy,خُذْهُtake himإِلَيْكَwith youوَاسْقِهِand give him to drinkكَأْسَthe cup ofالْمَوْتِ.death.
O boy, take him and give him to drink the cup of death.
فَقَالَ:So he said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful,إِنْifرَأَيْتَyou see fitأَنْtoتَسْتَبْقِيَنِيspare meحَتَّىuntilأُؤَيِّدَكَI support youبِمَالٍ؟with wealth?
He said: O Commander of the Faithful, if you see fit to spare me until I support you with wealth?
قَالَ:He said:لَيْسَThere isإِلَىtoذَلِكَthatسَبِيلٌ.any way.
He said: There is no way to that.
قَالَ:He said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful,فَدَعْنِيthen let meأُصَلِّprayرَكْعَتَيْنِtwo rak'ahsأَخْتِمُwith which I concludeبِهِمَاthemعَمَلِي.my deeds.
He said: O Commander of the Faithful, then let me pray two rak'ahs with which I conclude my deeds.
قَالَ:He said:لَيْسَThere isإِلَىtoذَلِكَthatسَبِيلٌ.any way.
He said: There is no way to that.
قَالَ:He said:فَدَعْنِيThen let meأُنْشِدْreciteأَبْيَاتاً.verses.
He said: Then let me recite some verses.
قَالَ:He said:هَاتِ.Bring them forth.فَقَالَ:So he recited:
He said: Bring them forth. So he recited:
زَعَمُواThey claimedبِأَنَّthatالصَّقْرَthe falconصَادَفَencounteredمَرَّةًonce......عُصْفُورَa sparrow ofبَرٍّthe wildernessسَاقَهُdriven to it byالْمَقْدُورُdestiny
They claimed that the falcon once encountered... a wilderness sparrow driven to it by destiny.
فَتَكَلَّمَThen spokeالْعُصْفُورُthe sparrowتَحْتَbeneathجَنَاحِهِits wing......وَالصَّقْرُwhile the falconمُنْقَضٌّwas swooping downعَلَيْهِupon itيَطِيرُflying
The sparrow spoke beneath its wing... while the falcon was swooping down upon it in flight.
مَاI am notكُنْتُbeingخَامِيزاًa greasy/fillingلِمِثْلِكَfor the likes of youلُقْمَةًmorsel......وَلَئِنْand ifشُوِيتَyou roast meفَإِنَّنِيthen indeed I amلَحَقِيرُvery insignificant
I am not a filling morsel for the likes of you... and even if you roast me, I am indeed very insignificant.
فَتَهَاوَنَSo showed leniencyالصَّقْرُthe falconالْمُدَلُّboastfulبِصَيْدِهِof its prey......كَرَماًout of generosityوَأَفْلَتَand let escapeذَلِكَthatالْعُصْفُورُsparrow
The falcon, boastful of its prey, showed leniency... out of generosity and let that sparrow escape.
فَقَالَSo saidالْمَأْمُونُ:al-Ma'mun:أَحْسَنْتَ!Well done!مَاdidجَرَىrunذَلِكَthatعَلَىuponلِسَانِكَyour tongueإِلَّاexceptلِبَقِيَّةٍfor a remainderبَقِيَتْthat remainedمِنْofعُمُرِكَ.your life.
Al-Ma'mun said: Well done! That did not run upon your tongue except for a remainder left of your life.
فَأَطْلَقَهُSo he freed himوَخَلَعَand bestowed robesعَلَيْهِupon himوَوَصَلَهُ.and rewarded him.
So he freed him, bestowed robes upon him, and rewarded him.
قَالَ:He said:وَقَالَAnd saidعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِcompanion ofصَاحِبُal-Ma'munالْمَأْمُونِ:al-Ma'mun:دَخْلْتُI enteredعَلَىuponالْمَأْمُونِal-Ma'munفَإِذَاand beholdنِطْعٌa leather matمَبْسُوطٌspread outوَرَجُلٌand a manفَوْقَهُupon itعَلَىatرَأْسِهِhis headرَجُلٌa manمَسْلُولٌdrawnسَيْفُهُ.his sword.
He said: Abdullah, the companion of al-Ma'mun, said: I entered upon al-Ma'mun, and behold, there was a leather mat spread out and a man upon it, with a man standing over his head holding a drawn sword.
فَلَمَّاSo whenنَظَرَhe lookedإِلَيَّat meالْمَأْمُونُal-Ma'munقَالَ:he said:يَاOعَبْدَAbdullah,اللَّهِAbdullahشَأْنَكَattend to your businessوَالرَّجُلَ.with the man.
When al-Ma'mun looked at me, he said: O Abdullah, attend to your business with the man.
فَحَسَرْتُSo I baredعَنْfromذِرَاعِيmy forearmوَقُمْتُand stoodفَوْقَaboveرَأْسِهِhis headوَاخْتَرَطْتُand unsheathedسَيْفِي،my sword,
So I bared my forearm, stood over his head, and unsheathed my sword.
فَسُلِّطَThen overcameعَلَىuponالْمَأْمُونِal-Ma'munالنُّعَاسُdrowsinessفَجَعَلَso he beganيَخْفِقُnoddingبِرَأْسِهِwith his headوَيَقُولُ:and saying:أَسْتَخِيرُI seek the guidance ofاللَّهَ.Allah.
Then drowsiness overcame al-Ma'mun, and he began nodding his head and saying: I seek the guidance of Allah.
فَلَمَّاSo whenكَانَit wasعِنْدَatالْمَسَاءِeveningقَالَhe saidلِي:to me:شَأْنَكَtake charge ofوَالرَّجُلَthe manاحْفَظْهُ.guard him.
When evening came, he said to me: Take charge of the man and guard him.
فَطَرَحْتُSo I threwحَمَائِلَthe belt ofسَيْفِيmy swordفِيaroundعُنُقِهِhis neckوَأَرْدَفْتُهُand made him ride behind meخَلْفِيbehind meوَذَهَبْتُand wentبِهِwith himإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِيmy house
So I put my sword-belt around his neck, had him ride behind me, and took him to my house,
ثُمَّthenعُدْتُI returnedالْيَوْمَon the dayالثَّانِيsecondإِلَىtoالْمَأْمُونِal-Ma'munفَفَعَلَand he didكَفِعْلِهِlike his action ofأَمْسِ.yesterday.
then on the second day I returned to al-Ma'mun and he did as he did yesterday.
فَلَمَّاSo whenكَانَit wasالْيَوْمُthe dayالثَّالِثُthirdقَالَsaidلِيto meالْمَأْمُونُ:al-Ma'mun:خَلِّreleaseعَنِtheالرَّجُلِmanوَأَعْطِهِand give himعَشَرَةَtenآلافِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.
When the third day came, al-Ma'mun said to me: Release the man and give him ten thousand dirhams.
فَأَرْدَفْتُهُSo I had him ride behind meخَلْفِيbehind meوَلَمْand I did notأَجْعَلْputحَمَائِلَthe belt ofالسَّيْفِthe swordفِيinعُنُقِهِ.his neck.
So I had him ride behind me and did not put the sword-belt in his neck.
فَقَالَSo saidلِي:to me:مَاWhat isلَكَthe matter with youلَمْthat you did notتُلْقِcastحَمَائِلَthe belt ofالسَّيْفِthe swordفِيinعُنُقِي؟my neck?
So he said to me: What is the matter with you that you did not cast the sword-belt in my neck?
قُلْتُ:I said:إِنَّهُIndeed, youقَدْhave beenعُفِيَpardonedعَنْكَ.regarding you.
I said: You have been pardoned.
قَالَ:He said:فَخَلِّThen releaseعَنِّيmeإِذاً.then.
He said: Then release me.
قُلْتُ:I said:أَمَرَنِيHe commanded meأَنْthatأُعْطِيَكَI give youعَشَرَةَtenآلَافِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.
I said: He commanded me to give you ten thousand dirhams.
قَالَ:He said:لَاNoحَاجَةَneedلِيhave Iفِيهَا،for them,خَلِّreleaseعَنِّي.me.
He said: I have no need for them, release me.
قَالَ:He said:إِذَاIfأُمِرْنَاwe are commandedبِأَمْرٍwith a commandانْتَهَيْنَاwe complyإِلَيْهِ.with it.
He said: If we are commanded with a command, we comply with it.
ثُمَّThenقُلْتُI saidلَهُ:to him:كُنْتَyou used toتُهَمْهِمُmutterفِيbehindقَفَايَmy backإِذَاwhenأَنَاIأَرْدَفْتُكَmade you rideبِشَيْءٍwith somethingفَمَاso whatكُنْتَwere youتَقُولُ؟saying?
Then I said to him: You used to mutter behind my back when I made you ride, so what were you saying?
قَالَ:He said:كُنْتُI used toأَقُولُ:say:اللَّهُمَّO Allah,أَنْتَYou areكُلَّeveryيَوْمٍdayفِيinشَأْنٍa matter,
He said: I used to say: O Allah, You are every day in a matter,
لَاdoes notيَشْغَلُكَdistract Youشَأْنٌany matterعَنْfromشَأْنٍanother matter,فَاجْعَلْنِيso make meمِنْofشَأْنِكَYour concern
no matter distracts You from another matter, so make me of Your concern
حَتَّىuntilتَنْقُلَYou transferمَاwhatفِيis inقَلْبِthe heart ofهَذَاthisالرَّجُلِmanمِنَfromالْغَضَبِangerإِلَىtoالرِّضَىapproval
until You transfer what is in the heart of this man from anger to approval
وَمِنَand fromالْغِلْظَةِharshnessإِلَىtoاللِّينِgentlenessوَالرِّقَّةِand softnessيَاOأَرْحَمَMost Mercifulالرَّاحِمِينَ.of the merciful.
and from harshness to gentleness and softness, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofإِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahimبْنِson ofالْمَهْدِيِّal-Mahdiأَنَّهُthat heبَيْنَمَاwhileهُوَheفِيwas inمَجْلِسِthe assembly ofالْمَأْمُونِal-Ma'munإِذْwhenتَكَلَّمَhe spokeبِكَلَامٍwith wordsأَسْقَطَwherein he erredفِيهِin themوَكَانَand his wordsكَلَامُهُwereيَحْتَمِلُopen toأَمْرَيْنِ.two interpretations.
And on the authority of Ibrahim ibn al-Mahdi, that while he was in the assembly of al-Ma'mun, he spoke words wherein he erred, and his words were open to two interpretations.
فَقَامَSo he stood upوَعَلِمَand knewأَنَّهُthat heقَدْhadأَخْطَأَerredفَقَالَ:and said:إِنْIfرَأَىsees fitسَيِّدِيmy masterأَنْtoيَأْذَنَpermitلِيmeفِيtoالْكَلَامِ.speak.
So he stood up, knowing he had erred, and said: If my master sees fit to permit me to speak.
قَالَ:He said:قُلْ.Speak.
He said: Speak.
قَالَ:He said:نِسَاؤُهُHis wivesطَوَالِقُare divorcedوَمَالُهُand his wealthصَدَقَةٌis charityوَعَبِيدُهُand his slavesأَحْرارٌare freeوَكُلُّand everyنَذْرٍvowوَضَعَهُplaced byاللَّهُAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand MightyبَيْنَbetweenعِبَادِهِHis servants
He said: His wives are divorced, his wealth is charity, his slaves are free, and every vow that Allah, Majestic and Mighty, has placed between His servants
فَفِيis uponعُنُقِهِhis neckدُونَto the exclusion ofالْخَلْقِcreationحَتَّىuntilيَفِيَhe fulfillsبِهِitإِنْifكَانَwasمَاwhatتَكَلَّمَhe spokeبِهِofإِلَّاexceptلِجِهَةِfor the aspect ofكَذَاsuch and suchوَكَذَاand such and suchوَتَأْوِيلِand the interpretation ofكَذَاsuch and suchوَكَذَا.and such and such.
is upon his neck to the exclusion of creation until he fulfills it, if what he spoke of was not for the aspect of such-and-such and the interpretation of such-and-such.
قَالَ:He said:فَتَبَسَّمَSo smiledالْمَأْمُونُal-Ma'munوَقَالَ:and said:اجْلِسْ،Sit down,إِنِّيfor Iوَاللَّهِby Allahمَاdid notذَهَبْتُgoحَيْثُwhereظَنَنْتَyou thought
He said: Al-Ma'mun smiled and said: Sit down, for by Allah I did not go where you thought,
وَمَاand I wasكُنْتُnotلِأَعْفُوَone to pardonعَنِtheالْكُلِّwholeوَأَخُذَand takeبِالْجُزْءِ،the part,
and I am not one to pardon the whole and take the part,
وَلَوْلَاand had it not been thatأَنِّيI amفِيinمَجْلِسٍan assemblyيَرِقُّthat softensعَنِregardingالْإِغْضَاءِoverlookingعَلَىmostأَكْثَرِof theالْحَالَاتِsituations
and had it not been that I am in an assembly that tends to overlook most situations,
ثُمَّthenبَلَغَreachedمِنِّيmeرَجُلٌfrom a manمَاwhatيَبْلُغُreachesمِنْfromعَبْدِهِhis slave
and a man went as far with me as a master goes with his slave,
مَاhe wouldوَجَدَhave foundعِنْدِيwith meإِلَّاexceptالصَّفْحَpardonوَالْعَفْوَ،and forgiveness,
he would have found with me nothing but pardon and forgiveness,
وَمَاand I doأَحْسَبُنِيnot think Iأُؤْجَرُwill be rewardedعَلَيْهِfor itإِذْsinceكَانَit isلَاnotيُؤَثِّرُaffectingفَيَّme
and I do not think I will be rewarded for it since it does not affect me,
وَإِنَّمَاfor indeedالْأَجْرُthe rewardبِقِسْطِis in proportion toالْأَلَمِthe painوَمِيزَانِand the measure ofالْمَضَضِ.the distress.
for indeed the reward is in proportion to the pain and the measure of the distress.
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofبَعْضِهِمْsome of themأَنَّthatوَالِياًa governorأُتِيَwas broughtبِرَجُلٍa manقَدْwho hadجَنَىcommittedجِنَايَةًa crimeفَأَمَرَso he orderedبِضَرْبِهِ،his beating,
And on the authority of some of them, that a governor was brought a man who had committed a crime, so he ordered him to be beaten.
فَلَمَّاSo whenمُدَّhe was stretched outقَالَ:he said:بِحَقِّBy the right ofرَأْسِthe head ofأُمِّكَyour motherإِلَّاunlessعَفَوْتَyou pardonعَنِّي!me!
When he was stretched out, he said: By the right of your mother's head, unless you pardon me!
فَأَبَى.So he refused.فَقَالَ:He said:بِحَقِّBy the right ofعَيْنَيْهَا!her eyes!
He refused. He said: By the right of her eyes!
قَالَ:He said:اضْرِبْ.Strike.قَالَ:He said:بِحَقِّBy the right ofخَدَّيْهَاher cheeksوَنَحْرِهَا!and her neck!
He said: Strike. He said: By the right of her cheeks and her neck!
قَالَ:He said:اضْرِبْ.Strike.قَالَ:He said:بِحَقِّBy the right ofثَدْيَيْهَا!her breasts!
He said: Strike. He said: By the right of her breasts!
قَالَ:He said:اضْرِبْ.Strike.قَالَ:He said:بِحَقِّBy the right ofسُرَّتِهَا!her navel!
He said: Strike. He said: By the right of her navel!
قَالَ:He said:دَعُوهُLeave himلَاlestيَنْحَدِرَhe descendsإِلَىtoأَسْفَلَ.lower.
He said: Leave him, lest he descend any lower.
مَسَاوِئُEvils ofتَعَدِّيtransgressing againstالسُّلْطَانِauthority
