حَدَّثَنَاNarrated to usعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنُAhmadأَحْمَدَbinبْنِIbrahimإِبْرَاهِيمَfrom

Narrated to us Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Ibrahim from Yahya bin Main

عَنْfromيَحْيَىYahyaبْنِbinمَعِينٍMainعَنِfromالْحَجَّاجِal-HajjajعَنْfromأَبِيAbuمَعْشَرٍMasharقَالَ:he said:

from Yahya bin Main, from al-Hajjaj, from Abu Mashar, he said:

لَمَّاWhenمَاتَdiedمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahبْنُbinأَبِيAbuسُفْيَانَSufyan

When Muawiyah bin Abu Sufyan died

وَذَلِكَand thatفِيwas inالنِّصْفِthe middleمِنْofرَجَبٍRajab

and that was in the middle of Rajab

سَنَةَin the yearسِتِّينَsixtyوََرَدَand arrivedخَبَرُهُhis newsعَلَىtoأَهْلِthe people ofالْمَدِينَةِMedina

of the year sixty, and his news reached the people of Medina

فِيinأَوَّلِthe beginning ofشَعْبَانَShaaban

in the beginning of Shaaban.

وَكَانَAnd wasعَلَىoverالْمَدِينَةِMedinaيَوْمَئِذٍon that dayالْوَلِيدُal-WalidبْنُbinعُتْبَةَUtbahبْنِbinأَبِيAbuسُفْيَانَSufyan

And in charge of Medina on that day was al-Walid bin Utbah bin Abu Sufyan

وَكَانَand he wasغُلَاماًa young manحَدَثاًyouthfulيَتَحَرَّجُ،who was cautious,

and he was a young youth who was cautious.

فَلَمَّاSo whenجَاءَهُcame to himمَاwhatجَاءَهُcame to himضَاقَbecame constrictedبِهِwith itصَدْرُهُhis chest

So when what came to him arrived, his chest became constricted

فَأَرْسَلَso he sentإِلَىtoمَرْوَانَMarwanبْنِbinالْحَكَمِ،al-Hakam,

and he sent for Marwan bin al-Hakam,

وَهُوَand he isالَّذِيthe one whoصَرَفَdivertedبِهِthrough himمَرْوَانُMarwanعَنِfromالْمَدِينَةِ،Medina,

and he was the one through whom Marwan acted regarding Medina,

وَكَانَand wasفِيinمَرْوَانَMarwanحِدَّةٌ،severity,

and in Marwan there was harshness,

فَقَالَso saidلَهُto himالْوَلِيدُ:al-Walid:

and al-Walid said to him:

يَاOأَبَاAbuعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِal-Malik,

"O Abu Abd al-Malik,

إِنَّهُverily itقَدْhasجَاءَنَاcome to usالْيَوْمَtodayشَيْءٌa matterلَمْnotنَكُنْwe wereنَسْتَغْنِيable to dispenseمَعَهُwith itعَنْfromاسْتِشَارَتِكَ.your consultation.

verily a matter has come to us today for which we cannot dispense with your consultation."

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

وَمَاAnd whatهُوَ؟is it?

"And what is it?"

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

مَوْتُThe death ofأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ.of the Faithful.

"The death of the Commander of the Faithful."

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

إِنَّاIndeed weلِلَّهِbelong to Allahوَإِنَّاand indeed to Himإِلَيْهِweرَاجِعُونَ،return,

"Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we return,

مَاتَ،he died,رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercyاللَّهُ!on him!

he has died, may Allah have mercy on him!"

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

نَعَمْ.Yes.

"Yes."

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

أَتُطِيعُWill you obeyأَمْرِي؟my command?

"Will you obey my command?"

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

نَعَمْ.Yes.

"Yes."

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

أَرْسِلْSendإِلَىtoالْحُسَيْنِal-HusseinبْنِbinعَلِيٍّAliوَإِلَىand toعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنِbinالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubair

"Send for al-Hussein bin Ali and Abdullah bin al-Zubair,

فَإِنْso ifبَايَعَاthey give allegianceفَخَلِّthen let go ofسَبِيلَهُمَاtheir pathوَإِنْand ifأَبَيَاthey refuseفَاضْرِبْthen strikeأَعْنَاقَهُمَا،their necks,

so if they give allegiance, leave them be, and if they refuse, strike their necks,"

فَأَرْسَلَso he sentإِلَىtoالْحُسَيْنِ،al-Hussein,رِضْوَانُmay the pleasure ofاللَّهِAllahعَلَيْهِ،be upon him,وَإِلَىand toعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنِbinالزُّبَيْرِ،al-Zubair,رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercyاللَّهُ،on him,وَبَدَأَand he beganبِالْحُسَيْنِ،with al-Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,

So he sent to al-Hussein (may Allah's pleasure be upon him) and to Abdullah bin al-Zubair (may Allah have mercy on him), and he began with al-Hussein (peace be upon him).

فَمَرَّAnd passedالْحُسَيْنُal-Husseinفِيinالْمَسْجِدِthe mosqueفَأَشَارَand signaledإِلَيْهِto himابْنُbinالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubairوَهُوَwhile heقَائِمٌwas standingيُصَلِّي،praying,

Al-Hussein passed through the mosque, and Ibn al-Zubair signaled to him while he was standing in prayer,

فَأَتَاهُso he came to himفَقَالَand saidلِلْحَرْسِيِّ:to the guard:تَأَخَّرْStep backأَيُّهَاOالْعَبْدُ.servant.

so he came to him and said to the guard: "Step back, O servant."

فَتَأَخَّرَSo stepped backالْحَرْسِيُّ.the guard.

So the guard stepped back.

فَقَالَAnd saidلَهُ:to him:يَاOأَبَاAbuعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahأَتَدْرِيdo you knowلِأَيِّfor whatشَيْءٍthingدُعِيتَ؟you were called?

And he said to him: "O Abu Abdullah, do you know why you were called?"

قَالَ:He said:لَا.No.

He said: "No."

قَالَ:He said:مَاتَDiedطَاغِيَتُهُمْtheir tyrantفَدَعَوْكَand they called youلِلْبَيْعَةِfor the allegianceفَلَاso do notتُبَايِعْgive allegianceوَقُلْand sayلَهُto himبِالْغَدَاةِin the morningعَلَىbeforeرُؤُوسِthe heads ofالْمَلَإِ.the gathering.

He said: "Their tyrant has died, and they have called you for the allegiance, so do not give allegiance, and tell him 'In the morning before the eyes of the public.'"

قَالَ:He said:فَدَخَلَSo enteredالْحُسَيْنُ،al-Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,

He said: So al-Hussein (peace be upon him) entered,

فَقَالَand saidلَهُto himالْوَلِيدُ:al-Walid:يَاOأَبَاAbuعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahدَعَوْنَاكَwe called youلِخَيْرٍ.for good.

and al-Walid said to him: "O Abu Abdullah, we called you for a good matter."

قَالَ:He said:أَيُّWhatشَيْءٍmatterهُوَ؟is it?

He said: "What matter is it?"

قَالَ:He said:مَاتَDiedأَمِيرُthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulوَقَدْand indeedعَرَفْتُمْyou have knownوَلِيَthe successor toعَهْدِكُمْyour covenantوَمَفْزَعَكُمْand your refuge

He said: "The Commander of the Faithful has died, and you have known your crown prince and your refuge,

وَقَدْand indeedبَايَعَhas given allegianceأَهْلُthe people ofالشَّامِShamوَالنَّاسُand the peopleفَادْخُلْso enterفِيمَاinto whatدَخَلَenteredفِيهِinto itالنَّاسُ.the people.

and the people of Sham and the people have given allegiance, so enter into what the people have entered into."

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْYesبِالْغَدَاةِin the morningإِنْifشَاءَwillsاللَّهُ.Allah.

He said: "Yes, in the morning, if Allah wills."

قَالَ:He said:لَاNoبَلِratherالسَّاعَةَ.now.

He said: "No, rather right now."

قَالَ:He said:وَمِثْلِيAnd the likes of meيُبَايِعُgives allegianceفِيinجَوْفِthe privacy ofالْبَيْتِ!the house!بِالْغَدَاةِIn the morningأُبَايِعُكَI will give you allegianceعَلَىuponرُؤُوسِthe heads ofالنَّاسِ.the people.

He said: "Would the likes of me give allegiance in the privacy of the house! In the morning I will give you allegiance before the people."

قَالَ:He said:لَاNoبَلِratherالسَّاعَةَ.right now.

He said: "No, rather right now."

قَالَ:He said:مَاNotأَنَاI amبِفَاعِلٍ.one who will do it.وَخَرَجَAnd he went outمِنْfromعِنْدِهِ.his presence.

He said: "I am not going to do that." And he left his presence.

فَأَرْسَلَSo he sentإِلَىtoابْنِIbnالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubairفَقَالَ:and said:يَاOأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍBakrدَعَوْنَاكَwe called youلِخَيْرٍ.for good.

So he sent for Ibn al-Zubair and said: "O Abu Bakr, we called you for a good matter."

قَالَ:He said:وَمَاAnd whatهُوَ؟is it?

He said: "And what is it?"

قَالَ:He said:مَاتَDiedأَمِيرُthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ.of the Faithful.

He said: "The Commander of the Faithful has died."

فَقَالَ:So he said:إِنَّاIndeed weلِلَّهِbelong to Allahوَإِنَّاand indeed to Himإِلَيْهِweرَاجِعُونَ،return,رَحْمَةُthe mercy ofاللَّهِAllahعَلَيْهِ!be upon him!

So he said: "Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we return, the mercy of Allah be upon him!"

قَالَ:He said:فَيَجْعَلُand he keptيُرَدِّدُrepeatingالتَّرَحُّمَinvoking mercyعَلَيْهِupon him

He said: And he kept repeating prayers of mercy upon him,

وَقَدْand indeedنَظَرَlookedابْنُIbnالزُّبَيْرِal-ZubairقَبْلَbeforeذَلِكَthatإِلَىatمَرْوَانَMarwanوَهُوَwhile heيُنَاجِيwas whispering toالْوَلِيدَal-Walid

and Ibn al-Zubair had looked before that at Marwan while he was whispering to al-Walid,

فَتَلَاand he recitedهَذِهِthisالْآيَةَ:verse:«"فَاتَّقُواSo fearاللَّهَAllahوَأَصْلِحُواand make peaceذَاتَbetweenبَيْنِكُمْyour relationshipsوَأَطِيعُواand obeyاللَّهَAllahوَرَسُولَهُand His Messengerإِنْifكُنْتُمْyou areمُؤْمِنِينَbelievers»"

and he recited this verse: "So fear Allah and set things right between you, and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you are believers"

فَقَالَ:so he said:يَاOأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍBakrقَدْyou haveعَرَفْتُمْknownوَلِيَthe successor toعَهْدِكُمْyour covenantوَمَفْزَعَكُمْand your refuge

and he said: "O Abu Bakr, you have known your crown prince and your refuge,

وَقَدْand indeedبَايَعَhas given allegianceأَهْلُthe people ofالشَّامِShamوَالنَّاسُand the peopleفَادْخُلْso enterفِيمَاinto whatدَخَلَenteredفِيهِinto itالنَّاسُ.the people.

and the people of Sham and the people have given allegiance, so enter into what the people have entered into."

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْYesبِالْغَدَاةِin the morningإِنْifشَاءَwillsاللَّهُ.Allah.

He said: "Yes, in the morning, if Allah wills."

قَالَ:He said:لَاNoبَلِratherالسَّاعَةَright now

He said: "No, rather right now."

قَالَ:He said:وَمِثْلِيAnd the likes of meيُبَايِعُgives allegianceفِيinجَوْفِthe privacy ofالْبَيْتِ!the house!أُبَايِعُكَI will give you allegianceعَلَىuponرُؤُوسِthe heads ofالْمَلَإِ.the gathering.

He said: "Would the likes of me give allegiance in the privacy of the house! I will give you allegiance before the public gathering."

قَالَ:He said:لَاNoبَلِratherالسَّاعَةَright now

He said: "No, rather right now."

قَالَ:He said:مَاNotأَنَاI amبِفَاعِلٍ.one who will do it.

He said: "I am not going to do that."

فَقَالَSo saidمَرْوَانُMarwanلِلْوَلِيدِ:to al-Walid:مَاWhatتَصْنَعُ؟are you doing?

So Marwan said to al-Walid: "What are you doing?

أَطِعْنِيObey meوَاضْرِبْand strikeأَعْنَاقَهُمَا،their necks,لَئِنْif indeedخَرَجَاthey leaveمِنَfromالْبَيْتِthe houseلَاyou willتَرَاهُمَاsee themأَبَداًeverإِلَّاexceptفِيinشَرٍّ.evil.

Obey me and strike their necks, for if they leave the house you will never see them again except in evil."

وَكَانَAnd wasالْوَلِيدُal-Walidمُتَحَرِّجاً،cautious,فَقَالَ:so he said:مَاI wouldكُنْتُnotلِأَقْتُلَهُمَا.kill them.

And al-Walid was cautious, so he said: "I would never kill them."

فَقَالَSo saidابْنُIbnالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubairلِمَرْوَانَ:to Marwan:يَاOابْنَson ofالزَّرْقَاءِthe blue-eyed womanأَتَقْدِرُdo you have the abilityعَلَىoverقَتْلِنَا؟killing us?

Ibn al-Zubair said to Marwan: "O son of the blue-eyed woman, are you capable of killing us?"

فَقَالَSo saidمَرْوَانُ:Marwan:إِنَّهُIndeedوَاللَّهِby Allahلَوْifأَطَاعَنِيhe had obeyed meمَاwould notخَرَجْتَhave gone outوَلَاnorصَاحِبُكَyour companionمِنَfromالْبَيْتِthe houseحَتَّىuntilتَضْرِبَyou strikeأَعْنَاقَكُمَا.both your necks.

Marwan said: "By Allah, had he obeyed me, neither you nor your companion would have left the house until your necks were struck."

قَالَ:He said:فَدَعَاSo calledالْحُسَيْنُ،al-Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,بِرَوَاحِلِهِfor his riding camels

He said: Al-Hussein (peace be upon him) called for his riding camels,

فَرَكِبَand he mountedيَتَوَجَّهُheadingنَحْوَtowardمَكَّةَMeccaعَلَىbyالْمَنْهَجِthe majorالْأَكْبَرِhighway.

and he mounted, heading toward Mecca via the major highway.

وَرَكِبَAnd mountedابْنُIbnالْزُّبَيْرِ،al-Zubair,رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercyاللَّهُ،on him,دَوَابَّmountsلَهُof his ownوَأَخَذَand tookطَرِيقَthe path ofالْفُرْعِal-Fura

Ibn al-Zubair (may Allah have mercy on him) mounted mounts of his own and took the road of al-Fura,

فَأَتَىand cameالْحُسَيْنَ،to al-Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,عَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنُbinمُطِيعٍMutiوَهُوَwhile heعَلَىatبِئْرِهِhis well

and Abdullah bin Muti came to al-Hussein (peace be upon him) while he was at his well,

فَنَزَلَso he dismountedإِلَيْهِtoward himوَقَالَ:and said:يَاOأَبَاAbuعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahأَيْنَwhereتُرِيدُ؟do you intend?

so he approached him and said: "O Abu Abdullah, where are you heading?"

قَالَ:He said:الْعِرَاقَ،"Iraq,مَاتَhas diedمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahوَجَاءَنِيand has come to meأَكْثَرُmore thanمِنْa load ofحَمْلِpack-loads ofصُحُفٍ.letters."

He said: "Iraq. Muawiyah has died, and more than a pack-load of letters has come to me."

قَالَ:He said:لَاDo notتَفْعَلْdoفَوَاللَّهِfor by Allahمَاthey did notحَفِظُواprotectأَبَاكَyour fatherوَكَانَand he wasخَيْراًbetterمِنْكَ،than you,

He said: "Do not do it, for by Allah, they did not protect your father, and he was better than you,

وَاللَّهِand by Allahلَئِنْif indeedقَتَلُوكَthey kill youلَاwill notتَبْقَىremainحُرْمَةٌsanctityبَعْدَكَafter youإِلَّاexceptاسْتُحِلَّتْ.it will be violated.

and by Allah, if they kill you, no sanctity will remain after you except that it will be violated."
