قَالَSaidأَبُوAbuمِعْشَرٍMi'shar:

Abu Mi'shar said:

حَدَّثَنَاNarrated to usرَجُلٌa manقَالَwho said:

A man narrated to us, saying:

خَرَجَCame outعَلَيْنَاto usيَزِيدُYazidبَعْدَafterالْعَتَمَةِthe night prayer

Yazid came out to us after the night prayer

وَمَعَهُand with himشَمْعَتَانِwere two candles,

and with him were two candles,

شَمْعَةٌa candleعَنْonيَمِينِهِhis rightوَشَمْعَةٌand a candleعَنْonيَسَارِهِhis left,

a candle on his right and a candle on his left,

وَعَلَيْهِand upon himمُعَصْفَرَتَانِwere two saffron-dyed garments

and upon him were two saffron-dyed garments

كَأَنَّهُمَاas if they wereقُطْرَتَاtwo dropsدَمٍof blood,

as if they were two drops of blood,

وَإِزَارٌand a lower garmentوَرِدَاءٌand an upper garment,

and a lower garment and an upper garment,

وَقَدْand indeedنَفَشَhe had ruffledجُمَّتَهُhis hair

and he had ruffled his hair

كَأَنَّهَاas if it wereبِرْسٌcarded wool.

as if it were carded wool.

فَصَعِدَSo he ascendedالْمِنْبَرَthe pulpit

So he ascended the pulpit

فَحَمِدَand praisedاللَّهَGodوَأَثْنَىand extolledعَلَيْهِHim,

and praised God and extolled Him,

ثُمَّthenقَالَhe said:

then he said:

أَمَّاAs forبَعْدُwhat follows,

As for what follows,

يَاOأَهْلَpeopleالشَّامِof Ash-Sham,

O people of Ash-Sham,

فَإِنَّهُindeedكَتَبَwroteإِلَيَّto meعُثْمَانُUthmanبْنُson ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiسُفْيَانَSufyan

Uthman ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Sufyan wrote to me

أَنَّthatأَهْلَthe peopleالْمَدِينَةِof Medinaأَخْرَجُواhave driven outقَوْمَنَاour peopleمِنَfromالْمَدِينَةِMedina,

that the people of Medina have driven our people out of Medina,

وَوَاللَّهِand by Godلَأَنْthat indeedتَقَعَto fallالْخَضْرَاءُthe skyعَلَىuponالْغَبْرَاءِthe earth

and by God, for the sky to fall upon the earth

أَحَبُّis more belovedإِلَيَّto meمِنْthanهَذَاthis.

is more beloved to me than this.

قَالَHe said:

He said:

وَكَانَAnd hadمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahأَوْصَىadvisedيَزِيدَYazid:

And Muawiyah had advised Yazid:

إِنْIfرَابَكَmakes you doubtمِنْfromقَوْمِكَyour peopleرِيبٌany matterأَوْorانْتَقَضَrebelsعَلَيْكَagainst youمِنْهُمْfrom themأَحَدٌanyone,

If any matter from your people makes you doubt or anyone among them rebels against you,

فَعَلَيْكَthen upon you isبِأَعْوَرِthe one-eyed man ofبَنِيBanuمُرَّةَMurrah,

then you must rely on the one-eyed man of Banu Murrah,

فَاسْتَشِرْهُso consult him,

so consult him,

يَعْنِيmeaningمُسْلِمَMuslimبْنَson ofعُقْبَةَUqbah.

meaning Muslim ibn Uqbah.

فَلَمَّاSo whenكَانَتْit wasتِلْكَthatاللَّيْلَةُnight,

So when that night came,

قَالَhe said:

he said:

أَيْنَWhere isمُسْلِمُMuslimبْنُson ofعُقْبَةَUqbah?

Where is Muslim ibn Uqbah?

فَقَامَSo he stood upفَقَالَand said:

So he stood up and said:

هَاHereأَنَاIذَاam,

Here I am,

قَالَhe said:

he said:

كُنْBeمَعِيwith me.

Be with me.

فَجَعَلَAnd Yazid beganيَزِيدُYazidيُعَبِّيto prepareالْجُيُوشَthe armies.

And Yazid began to prepare the armies.

وَكَانَAnd wasابْنُIbnسِنَانٍSinanنَازِلًاstayingعَلَىwithمُسْلِمٍMuslim,

And Ibn Sinan was staying with Muslim,

فَقَالَso he saidلَهُto him:

so he said to him:

إِنَّIndeedأَمِيرَthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulقَدْhasبَعَثَنِيsent meإِلَىtoالْمَدِينَةِMedinaوَمَكَّةَand Mecca.

The Commander of the Faithful has sent me to Medina and Mecca.

قَالَHe said:

He said:

اسْتَعْفِهِAsk to be excused from it.

Ask to be excused from it.

قَالَHe said:

He said:

فَارْكَبْSo rideفِيلًاan elephantأَوْorفِيلَةًa female elephantوَتَكَنَّand take the kunyahأَبَاAbuيَكْسُومَYaksum.

So ride an elephant or a female elephant and take the kunyah Abu Yaksum.

فَمَرِضَThen fell illمُسْلِمٌMuslimقَبْلَbeforeخُرُوجِهِhis departureمِنَfromالشَّامِAsh-Sham,

Muslim fell ill before his departure from Ash-Sham,

فَدَخَلَso enteredعَلَيْهِupon himيَزِيدُYazidبْنُson ofمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahفَقَالَand said:

so Yazid ibn Muawiyah entered upon him and said:

قَدْIndeedكُنْتُI wasوَجَّهْتُكَdirecting youلِهَذَاfor thisالْبَعْثِexpeditionوَأَرَاكَand I see youمُدْنِفًاmortally ill?

I had directed you for this expedition, and I see you mortally ill?

فَقَالَSo he said:

So he said:

يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful,أَنْشُدُكَI implore you byاللَّهَGodأَنْthatتَحْرِمَنِيyou do not deprive me ofأَجْرًاa rewardسَاقَهُdrivenاللَّهُGodإِلَيَّto me,

O Commander of the Faithful, I implore you by God not to deprive me of a reward that God has driven to me,

إِنَّمَاindeedهُوَit isأَمْرٌa matterخَفِيفٌlightوَلَيْسَand there is notعَلَيَّupon meمِنْofبَأْسٍharm!

it is merely a light matter and there is no harm upon me!

قَالَHe said:

He said:

فَلَمْSo he was not ableيُطِقْto be ableمِنَdue toالْوَجَعِthe painأَنْtoيَرْكَبَrideبَعِيرًاa camelوَلَاnorدَابَّةًan animal.

Due to the pain, he was not able to ride a camel or an animal.

قَالَHe said:

He said:

فَوُضِعَSo he was placedعَلَىonسَرِيرٍa cotوَحَمَلَهُand carried himالرِّجَالُthe menعَلَىonأَعْنَاقِهِمْtheir necks

So he was placed on a cot and men carried him on their shoulders

حَتَّىuntilجَاؤُواthey cameبِهِwith himمَكَانًاto a placeيُقَالُcalledلَهُitالْبَتْرَاءُAl-Batra'.

until they brought him to a place called Al-Batra'.

فَأَرَادَSo he intendedالنُّزُولَto dismountبِهِthere,

So he intended to dismount there,

فَقَالَand said:

and said:

مَاWhat isاسْمُthe name ofهَذَاthisالْمَكَانِ؟place?

What is the name of this place?

قِيلَIt was said:الْبَتْرَاءُAl-Batra'.

It was said: Al-Batra'.

قَالَHe said:لَاDo notتَنْزِلُواdismountبِهِat it.

He said: Do not dismount at it.

فَنَزَلُواSo they dismountedبِقُهَرٍat Quharثُمَّthenارْتَحَلُواthey set offحَتَّىuntilنَزَلُواthey dismountedالْحَرَّةَat Al-Harrah.

So they dismounted at Quhar, then set off until they dismounted at Al-Harrah.

فَأَرْسَلَSo he sentإِلَىtoأَهْلِthe peopleالْمَدِينَةِof Medinaأَنَّthatأَمِيرَthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulيَقْرَأُconveysعَلَيْكُمْto youالسَّلَامَpeaceوَيَقُولُand says:

So he sent word to the people of Medina that the Commander of the Faithful conveys peace to you and says:

أَنْتُمُYouالْأَصْلُare the originوَالْعَشِيرَةُand the clan,

You are the origin and the clan,

فَاتَّقُواso fearاللَّهَGodوَاسْمَعُواand listenوَأَطِيعُواand obey,

so fear God, and listen and obey,

فَإِنَّfor indeedلَكُمْfor youفِيinعَهْدِthe covenantاللَّهَof Godوَمِيثَاقِهِand His pledgeعَطَاءَيْنِare two stipendsفِيinكُلِّeveryسَنَةٍyear:

for indeed you have in the covenant of God and His pledge two stipends every year:

عَطَاءٌa stipendفِيinالشِّتَاءِthe winterوَعَطَاءٌand a stipendفِيinالصَّيْفِthe summer,

a stipend in the winter and a stipend in the summer,

وَلَكُمْand you haveعِنْدِيwith meفِيbyعَهْدِthe covenantاللَّهِof GodأَنْthatأَجْعَلَI will makeسِعْرَthe priceالْحِنْطَةِof wheatعِنْدَكُمْwith youسِعْرَthe priceالْخَبَطِof khabat,

and you have with me by the covenant of God that I will make the price of wheat with you equal to the price of khabat,

وَالْخَبَطُand khabatيَوْمَئِذٍon that dayسَبْعَةُsevenأَصُوعٍsa'sبِدِرْهَمٍfor a dirham.

and khabat on that day was seven sa's for a dirham.

فَقَالُواSo they said:نَخْلَعُهُWe depose himكَمَاjust asنَخْلَعُwe take offعَمَائِمَنَاour turbansوَنِعَالَنَاand our sandals.

So they said: We depose him just as we take off our turbans and our sandals.

فَقَاتَلَهُمْSo he fought themفَهَزَمَهُمْand defeated them,

So he fought them and defeated them,

وَقَتَلَand killedعَبْدَAbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنَHanzhalahحَنْظَلَةَand IbnوَابْنَHazm,حَزْمٍand a coupleوَبِضْعَةَofعَشَرَtenرَجُلًاmenمِنَfromالْوُجُوهِthe notables,

and killed Abdullah ibn Hanzhalah, Ibn Hazm, and some ten-odd men of the notables,

وَتِسْعُونَand ninetyرَجُلًاmenمِنْfromقُرَيْشٍQuraish,

and ninety men from Quraish,

وَبِضْعَةٌand someوَسَبْعُونَseventyرَجُلًاmenمِنَfromالْأَنْصَارِthe Ansar,

and some seventy men from the Ansar,

وَقَتَلَand he killedمِنْfromسَائِرِthe rest ofالنَّاسِthe peopleنَحْوَaboutأَرْبَعَةِfourآلَافِthousandرَجُلٍmen.

and he killed from the rest of the people about four thousand men.

وَقَتَلَAnd killedابْنَانِtwo sonsلِعَبْدِof AbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنِJa'far,جَعْفَرٍand killed

Two sons of Abdullah ibn Ja'far were killed,

وَقَتَلَand he killedأَرْبَعَةًfourمِنْfromوَلَدِthe offspring ofزَيْدِZaidبْنِson ofثَابِتٍThabit.

and he killed four of the offspring of Zaid ibn Thabit.

وَقَالَAnd saidمُسْلِمٌMuslimلِعَبْدِto AbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنِJa'far:جَعْفَرٍGet out

Muslim said to Abdullah ibn Ja'far: Get out of Medina so my sight does not fall upon you.

اخْرُجْGet outعَنِfromالْمَدِينَةِMedinaلَاlestيَقَعَfallبَصَرِيmy sightعَلَيْكَupon you.

Get out of Medina so my sight does not fall upon you.

وَأَنْهَبَAnd he plunderedالْمَدِينَةَMedinaثَلَاثًاfor three days,

And he plundered Medina for three days,

فَقَتَلَso he killedالنَّاسَthe peopleوَضَجَّتِand wailedالنِّسَاءُthe womenوَذَهَبَتِand vanishedالْأَمْوَالُthe wealth.

so people were killed, women wailed, and wealth vanished.

فَلَمَّاSo whenفَرَغَfinishedمُسْلِمٌMuslimمِنَfromالْقِتَالِthe fighting,

So when Muslim finished fighting,

انْتَقَلَhe movedإِلَىtoقَصْرِthe palaceابْنِof IbnعَامِرٍAmir

he moved to the palace of Ibn Amir

فَدَعَاand calledأَهْلَthe peopleالْمَدِينَةِof Medinaلِيُبَايِعُوهُto pledge allegiance to him.

and called the people of Medina to pledge allegiance to him.

وَكَانَAnd wereنَاسٌsome peopleمِنْهُمْamong themقَدْwho hadتَحَصَّنُواfortified themselvesفِيinعَرْصَةِthe courtyard ofسَعِيدٍSaeed,

And some people among them had fortified themselves in the courtyard of Saeed,

مِنْهُمْamong them:مُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofأَبِيAbiجَهْمٍJahm

among them: Muhammad ibn Abi Jahm

وَنَفَرٌand a groupمَعَهُwith him.

and a group with him.

فَدَعَاهُمْSo he called themلِلْبَيْعَةِto the pledge of allegiance,

So he called them to the pledge of allegiance,

فَقَالَand said:

and said:

تُبَايِعُونَDo you pledge allegianceلِعَبْدِto AbdullahاللَّهِYazidيَزِيدَthe Commanderأَمِيرِof the Faithfulالْمُؤْمِنِينَon the basisعَلَىthatأَنَّكُمْyou areخَوَلُهُhis slaves/vassalsمِمَّاwith regard to whatأَفَاءَbestowedاللَّهُGodعَلَيْهِupon himبِأَسْيَافِby the swordsالْمُسْلِمِينَof the Muslims,

Do you pledge allegiance to Abdullah Yazid, the Commander of the Faithful, on the basis that you are his vassals with regard to what God has bestowed upon him by the swords of the Muslims,

إِنْifشَاءَhe willsوَهَبَhe givesوَإِنْand ifشَاءَhe willsأَعْتَقَhe freesوَإِنْand ifشَاءَhe willsاسْتَرَقَّ؟he enslaves?

if he wills he gives, if he wills he frees, and if he wills he enslaves?

فَبَايَعَهُSo pledged allegiance to himنَاسٌpeopleمِنْهُمْamong themعَلَىonذَلِكَthat.

So some people among them pledged allegiance to him on that basis.

وَجَاءَAnd cameعَمْرُوAmrبْنُson ofعُثْمَانَUthmanبِيَزِيدَwith Yazidبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنِZamah,زَمْعَةَand his grandmother

And Amr ibn Uthman came with Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn Zamah, whose grandmother was

وَجَدَّتُهُand his grandmotherأُمُّUmmuسَلَمَةَSalamah,زَوْجُthe wife ofالنَّبِيِّthe Prophet,

Ummu Salamah, the wife of the Prophet,

صَلَّىmay God'sاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace.

may God's blessings be upon him and grant him peace.

وَكَانَAnd wasعَمْرُوAmrبْنُson ofعُثْمَانَUthmanقَالَwho had saidلِأُمِّto UmmuسَلَمَةَSalamah:

And Amr ibn Uthman had said to Ummu Salamah:

أَرْسِلِيSendمَعِيwith meابْنَthe son ofابْنَتِكِyour daughter

Send the son of your daughter with me

وَلَكِand you haveمِنِّيfrom meعَهْدُthe covenantاللَّهِof Godوَمِيثَاقُهُand His pledgeأَنْthatأَرُدَّهُI will return himإِلَيْكِto youكَمَاjust asأَخَذْتُهُI took himمِنْكِfrom you.

and you have my covenant and pledge before God that I will return him to you just as I took him from you.

فَجَاءَSo he cameبِهِwith himإِلَىtoمُسْلِمٍMuslim,

So he came with him to Muslim,

فَجَلَسَand satعَمْرُوAmrبْنُson ofعُثْمَانَUthmanعَلَىonطَرَفِthe edge ofسَرِيرِهِhis cot.

and Amr ibn Uthman sat on the edge of his cot.

فَلَمَّاSo whenتَقَدَّمَadvancedيَزِيدُYazidبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdullah,اللَّهِhe said:قَالَYou pledge allegiance

When Yazid ibn Abdullah advanced, he said:

تُبَايِعُYou pledge allegianceلِيَزِيدَto Yazidأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulعَلَىonأَنَّكَthat you areمِنْfromخَوَلِهِhis vassalsمِمَّاwith regard to whatأَفَاءَbestowedاللَّهُGodعَلَيْهِupon himبِأَسْيَافِby the swordsالْمُسْلِمِينَof the Muslims,

You pledge allegiance to Yazid, the Commander of the Faithful, on the basis that you are from his vassals with regard to what God has bestowed upon him by the swords of the Muslims,

إِنْifشَاءَhe willsوَهَبَhe givesوَإِنْand ifشَاءَhe willsأَعْتَقَhe freesوَإِنْand ifشَاءَhe willsاسْتَرَقَّ؟he enslaves?

if he wills he gives, if he wills he frees, and if he wills he enslaves?

فَقَالَSo he said:لَاNo.

So he said: No.

أَنَاI amأَقْرَبُcloserإِلَىtoأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulمِنْكَthan you.

I am closer to the Commander of the Faithful than you.

فَقَالَSo he said:وَاللَّهِBy God,لَاneverأَسْتَقِيلُهَاwill I retract itمِنْكَfrom youأَبَدًا!ever!

So he said: By God, I will never retract it from you ever!

فَقَالَSo saidعَمْرُوAmrبْنُson ofعُثْمَانَUthman:

Amr ibn Uthman said:

أَنْشُدُكَI implore you byاللَّهَ!God!

I implore you by God!

فَإِنِّيFor indeedأَخَذْتُهُI took himمِنْfromأُمِّUmmuسَلَمَةَSalamahبِعَهْدِunder a covenant ofاللَّهِGodوَمِيثَاقِهِand His pledgeأَنْthatأَرُدَّهُI would return himإِلَيْهَاto her,

For indeed I took him from Ummu Salamah under a covenant of God and His pledge that I would return him to her,

قَالَhe said:

he said:

فَرَكَلَهُso he kicked himوَرَمَىand threwبِهِhimمِنْfromفَوْقِaboveالسَّرِيرِthe cot

so he kicked him and threw him from above the cot

فَقَالَand said:

and said:

لَوْIfقُلْتَهَاyou had said itمَاnotأَقَلْتُكَwould I have excused you.

If you had said it, I would not have excused you.

فَقُتِلَSo was killedيَزِيدُYazidبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdullah.اللَّهِAbdullah

So Yazid ibn Abdullah was killed.

ثُمَّThenأُتِيَwas broughtبِمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiجَهْمٍJahm,

Then Muhammad ibn Abi Jahm was brought,

فَقَالَso he saidلَهُto him:

so he said to him:

أَنْتَAre youالْقَائِلُthe one who saidاقْتُلُواKillسَبْعَةَseventeenعَشَرَfromمِنْBanuبَنِيUmayyahأُمَيَّةَso thatلَاyou never seeتَرَوْاany evilشَرًّاever?أَبَدًا؟ever?

Are you the one who said: Kill seventeen from Banu Umayyah so that you never see any evil ever?

قَالَHe said:

He said:

قَدْIndeedقُلْتُهَاI said itوَلَكِنْbutلَاis notيُطَاعُobeyedلِقَصِيرٍQasirأَمْرٌ،in any matter.

I did say it, but Qasir's command is not obeyed.

أَرْسِلْReleaseيَدَيَّmy handsمِنْfromغُلِّيmy shackleوَقَدْand indeedبَرِئَتْis absolvedمِنِّيfrom meالذِّمَّةُthe covenant.

Release my hands from my shackle, for the covenant from me is absolved.

قَالَHe said:لَاNo,حَتَّىuntilأُقَدِّمَكَI send you forwardإِلَىtoالنَّارِthe Fire.

He said: No, until I send you forward to the Fire.

فَضَرَبَSo he struckعُنُقَهُhis neck.

So he struck his neck.

ثُمَّThenجَاؤُوهُthey brought to himبِمَعْقِلِMa'qilبْنِson ofسِنَانٍSinan

Then they brought to him Ma'qil ibn Sinan

وَكَانَand he wasجَالِسًاsittingفِيinبَيْتِهِhis house.

and he was sitting in his house.

فَأَتَاهُSo came to himمِائَةُa hundredرَجُلٍmenمِنْfromقَوْمِهِhis people

So a hundred men from his people came to him

فَقَالُواand said:اذْهَبْGoبِنَاwith usإِلَىtoالْأَمِيرِthe commanderحَتَّىso thatنُبَايِعَهُwe may pledge allegiance to him.

and said: Go with us to the commander so that we may pledge allegiance to him.

فَقَالَHe said:إِنِّيIndeed Iقَدْhaveقُلْتُsaidلَهُto himكَلِمَةًa wordوَإِنِّيand indeed Iأَتَخَوَّفُهُfear him.

He said: I have said a word to him and indeed I fear him.

فَقَالُواThey said:لَاNo,وَاللَّهِby God,لَاhe shall notيَصِلُreachإِلَيْكَyouأَبَدًاever.

They said: No, by God, he shall not reach you ever.

فَلَمَّاSo whenبَلَغُواthey reachedالْبَابَthe doorأَدْخَلُواthey brought inمَعْقِلًاMa'qilوَغَلَّقُواand lockedالْبَابَthe door.

So when they reached the door, they brought Ma'qil in and locked the door.

فَلَمَّاSo whenنَظَرَlookedإِلَيْهِat himمُسْلِمٌMuslim,

When Muslim looked at him,

قَالَhe said:إِنِّيIndeed Iأَرَىseeالشَّيْخَthe old manقَدْhasلَغِبَgrown exhausted.

he said: I see the old man has grown exhausted.

اسْقُوهُGive him to drinkمِنَfromالثَّلْجِthe iceالَّذِيwhichزَوَّدَنِيهِprovided me withأَمِيرُthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful.

Give him to drink from the ice which the Commander of the Faithful provided me with.

قَالَHe said:فَخَاضُواSo they dissolvedلَهُfor himثَلْجًاiceبِعَسَلٍwith honeyفَشَرِبَهُand he drank it.

So they dissolved ice with honey for him and he drank it.

وَقَالَAnd he said:أَشَرِبْتَ؟Have you drunk?

And he said: Have you drunk?

قَالَHe said:نَعَمْYes.

He said: Yes.

قَالَHe said:وَاللَّهِBy God,لَاneverتَبُولُهُwill you pass itمِنْfromمَثَانَتِكَyour bladderأَبَدًاever.

He said: By God, you will never pass it from your bladder ever.

أَنْتَAre youالْقَائِلُthe one who saidارْكَبْRideفِيلًاan elephantأَوْorفِيلَةًa female elephantوَتَكَنَّand take the kunyahأَبَاAbuيَكْسُومَ؟Yaksum?

Are you the one who said: Ride an elephant or a female elephant and take the kunyah Abu Yaksum?

قَالَHe said:أَمَاAs forوَاللَّهِGodلَقَدْindeedتَخَوَّفْتُI fearedذَلِكَthatمِنْكَfrom youوَلَكِنْbut

He said: As for God, I indeed feared that from you, but
