وَأَمَّاAnd as forإِسْلَامُthe Islam ofعُثْمَانَUthman

And as for the Islam of Uthman,

فَإِنَّهُit isرُوِيَnarratedأَنَّthatعُثْمَانَUthmanبْنَson ofعَفَّانَ،Affan,

it is narrated that Uthman bin Affan,

رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercy onاللَّهُ،him,قَالَ:said:

may Allah have mercy on him, said:

دَخَلْتُI enteredعَلَىuponجَدَّتِيmy maternal grandmotherبِنْتِdaughter ofعَبْدِAbdالْمُطَّلِبِal-Muttalib

I entered upon my grandmother, the daughter of Abd al-Muttalib,

أَعُودُهَاvisiting herفَإِنِّيand indeed Iلِعِنْدِهَاwas with herإِذْwhenجَاءَcameرَسُولُMessenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,

visiting her, and while I was with her, the Messenger of Allah came

صَلَّىmay Allah send blessingsاللَّهُuponعَلَيْهِ،himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peaceيَعُودُهَاto visit her

may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him, to visit her.

فَجَعَلْتُSo I beganأَنْظُرُto lookإِلَيْهِat himوَقَدْand alreadyنَشَرَhad spreadمِنْofشَأْنِهِhis matterحِينَئِذٍat that timeشَيْئاً،something,

So I began to look at him, as something of his affair had spread at that time,

فَأَقْبَلَso he turnedعَلَيَّtowards meفَقَالَ:and said:مَاWhatشَأْنُكَis your matterيَاOعُثْمَانُ؟Uthman?

and he turned towards me and said: What is the matter with you, O Uthman?

فَجَعَلَSo there was madeلِيfor meإِلَىtoالْكَلَامِspeechسَبِيلاً،a way,

So a way to speak was opened for me,

فَقُلْتُ:and I said:أَعْجَبُI wonderمِنْكَat youوَمِنْand atمَكَانِكَyour positionفِينَاamong usوَفِيand amongقَوْمِكَyour people

and I said: I marvel at you and your position among us and among your people,

وَمَاand whatيُقَالُis saidعَلَيْكَ،about you,فَقَالَ:so he said:لَاThere isإِلَهَgodإِلَّاexceptاللَّهُ،Allah,

and what is said about you. He said: There is no deity but Allah,

فَاللَّهُand Allahيَعْلَمُknowsأَنِّيthat Iاقْشَعَرَرْتُ.shivered.

and Allah knows that I shivered.

ثُمَّThenقَالَ:he said:وَفِي"And inالسَّمَاءِthe heavenرِزْقُكُمْis your provisionوَمَاand whateverتُوعَدُونَyou are promised

Then he said: "And in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised,

فَوَرَبِّSo by the Lord ofالسَّمَاءِthe heavenوَالْأَرْضِand the earth,إِنَّهُverily itلَحَقٌّis surely truthمِثْلَjust likeمَاwhatأَنَّكُمْthat youتَنْطِقُونَ"speak"

So by the Lord of the heaven and the earth, it is surely the truth, just like the fact that you speak."

فَقَامَThen he stood upفَقُمْتُand I stood upفِيinأَثَرِهِ،his footsteps,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,فَأَسْلَمْتُ.and I accepted Islam.

Then he stood up and I followed in his footsteps, peace be upon him, and I accepted Islam.

[مَسَاوِئُ[The misdeeds ofمَنْwhoeverارْتَدَّapostatizedعَنِfromالْإِسْلَامِ]Islam]

[The misdeeds of whoever apostatized from Islam]

مِنْهُمْAmong themجَبَلَةُis Jabalahبْنُbinالْأَيْهَمِal-Ayhamالْغَسَّانِيُّ،al-Ghassani.

Among them is Jabalah bin al-Ayham al-Ghassani.

لَمَّاWhenافْتُتِحَتِwas conqueredالشَّامُal-Shamوَنَظَرَand lookedجَبَلَةُJabalahإِلَىatهَدْيِthe conduct ofالْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsوَوَقَارِهِمْand their dignity,

When al-Sham was conquered and Jabalah looked at the conduct of the Muslims and their dignity,

أَحَبَّhe lovedالدُّخُولَthe entryفِيintoالْإِسْلَامِIslam,فَسَارَso he traveledنَحْوَtowardsالْمَدِينَةِMedinaإِلَىtoعُمَرَUmarبْنِbinالْخَطَّابِ،al-Khattab,

he desired to enter Islam, so he traveled towards Medina to Umar bin al-Khattab,

رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercy onاللَّهُ،him.فَلَمَّاWhenبَلَغَreachedعُمَرَUmarقُدُومُهُhis arrival,

may Allah have mercy on him. When Umar was informed of his arrival,

قَالَhe saidلِلْمُهَاجِرِينَ:to the Muhajirun:اسْتَقْبِلُوهُReceive himوَأَظْهِرُواand showتَعْظِيمَهُhis honoringوَتَبْجِيلَهُand reverence,

he said to the Muhajirun: Receive him and show him honor and reverence,

فَإِنَّهُfor he isقَرِيبُrecentالْعَهْدِin tiesبِالْمَلِكِ.to royalty.

for he is newly a king.

فَاسْتَقْبَلَهُSo received himالنَّاسُthe peopleوَأَظْهَرُواand showedبِرَّهُ،kindness to him,وَأَقْبَلَand advancedجَبَلَةُJabalahحَتَّىuntilدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَىuponعُمَرَ،Umar,

So the people received him and showed him kindness, and Jabalah proceeded until he entered upon Umar,

رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُ،him,فَقَرَّبَso he brought nearمَجْلِسَهُhis gatheringوَأَدْنَاهُand brought him closeوَوَعَدَهُand promised himمِنْfromنَفْسِهِhimselfخَيْراً،good,

may Allah be pleased with him, and he brought him near in his gathering and drew him close and promised him well,

فَأَسْلَمَso he accepted Islamوَأَقَامَand stayedبِالْمَدِينَةِin Medinaحَتَّىuntilإِذَاwhenحَضَرَapproachedأَوَانُthe time ofالْمَوْسِمِthe season,حَجَّperformed Hajjعُمَرُ،Umar,

so he accepted Islam and stayed in Medina until, when the time of the season approached, Umar performed Hajj,

رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercy onاللَّهُ،him,وَخَرَجَand went outمَعَهُwith himجَبَلَةُ،Jabalah.

may Allah have mercy on him, and Jabalah went out with him.

فَبَيْنَاWhileهُوَheيَطُوفُwas making Tawafبِالْبَيْتِaround the Houseمُحْرِماًin a state of Ihramوَعَلَيْهِand upon himإِزَارَانِwere two garments

While he was performing Tawaf around the House in Ihram, wearing two garments,

قَدْhavingتَرَدَّىdrapedبِوَاحِدٍwith oneوَاتَّزَرَand tied around his waistبِالْآخَرِwith the other,إِذْwhenوَطِئَstepped onرَجُلٌa manطَرَفَthe edge ofإِزَارِهِhis wrapper

having draped one over his shoulders and tied the other around his waist, a man stepped on the edge of his wrapper,

فَانْحَلَّso it came undoneعَنْهُfrom himحَتَّىuntilبَدَتْappearedعَوْرَتُهُ،his private parts.

so it came undone from him until his private parts were exposed.

فَغَضِبَSo he became angryوَوَثَبَand sprangعَلَىuponالرَّجُلِthe manفَلَطَمَهُ،and slapped him.

So he became angry and sprang upon the man and slapped him.

فَتَعَلَّقَSo attached himselfبِهِto himالرَّجُلُthe manوَجَمَاعَةٌand a groupمَعَهُwith himوَانْطَلَقُواand they wentبِهِwith himإِلَىtoعُمَرَ،Umar,

The man and a group with him grabbed him and took him to Umar,

رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُ،him,وَشَهِدُواand they testifiedعَلَيْهِ.against him.

may Allah be pleased with him, and they testified against him.

فَقَالَSo saidعُمَرُ:Umar:أَقِدِAllow retaliation againstالرَّجُلَthe manأَوْorاسْتَوْهِبْهُask him to forgive itمِنْهُ.from him.

Umar said: Allow the man to retaliate against you, or ask him to forgive you.

فَقَالَSaidجَبَلَةُ:Jabalah:وَكَذَلِكَAnd is thisهَذَاalsoالدِّينُthe religionلَاwhere there is notيُفَضَّلُfavoredفِيهِin itشَرِيفٌa nobleعَلَىoverوَضِيعٍa commonerوَلَاnorمَلِكٌa kingعَلَىoverسُوقَةٍ؟a subject?

Jabalah said: And is this the religion, where a noble is not favored over a commoner, nor a king over a subject?

قَالَSaidعُمَرُ:Umar:قَالَSaidاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَى،Exalted is He,وَقَوْلُهُand His wordالْحَقُّ:is the truth:"إِنَّ"Indeedأَكْرَمَكُمْthe most noble of youعِنْدَnearاللَّهِAllahأَتْقَاكُمْ"،is the most righteous of you",

Umar said: Allah the Exalted said, and His word is the truth: "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you",

إِنَّindeedالنَّاسَthe people,شَرِيفَهُمْtheir nobleوَوَضِيعَهُمْand their commonerفِيinالْحَقِّthe truthسَوَاءٌ.are equal.

indeed people, their noble and their commoner, are equal in rights.

فَانْصَرَفَSo departedجَبَلَةُ،Jabalah.فَلَمَّاWhenجُنَّgrew darkعَلَيْهِupon himاللَّيْلُthe nightخَرَجَhe set outفِيwithحَشْمِهِhis retinueوَعِيَالِهِand his family

So Jabalah departed, and when night fell upon him, he set out with his retinue and family

حَتَّىuntilلَحِقُواthey reachedبِأَرْضِthe land ofالشَّامِal-Shamمُرْتَدّاًas an apostateعَنِfromالْإِسْلَامِ،Islam.

until they reached the land of al-Sham as an apostate from Islam.

فَكَتَبَSo wroteعُمَرُUmarإِلَىtoأَبِيAbuعُبَيْدَةَUbaydahبْنِbinالْجَرَّاحِal-Jarrah

Umar wrote to Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah

فَأَمَرَهُand ordered himأَنْthatيَسْتَتِيبَhe should ask Jabalah to repentجَبَلَةَJabalah,فَإِنْso ifتَابَhe repentedوَإِلَّاand otherwiseضَرَبَhe should strikeعُنُقَهُ،his neck.

ordering him to ask Jabalah to repent; if he repented, fine, otherwise strike his neck.

وَبَلَغَAnd reachedذَلِكَthatجَبَلَةَJabalah,فَخَرَجَso he leftمِنْfromأَرْضِthe land ofالشَّامِal-Shamحَتَّىuntilدَخَلَhe enteredأَرْضَthe land ofالرُّومِthe Romans

That reached Jabalah, so he left the land of al-Sham and entered the land of the Romans

وَأَتَىand came toالْمَلِكَthe kingفَأَخْبَرَهُand informed himبِأَمْرِهِof his matterوَرُجُوعِهِand his returnإِلَىtoالنَّصْرَانِيَّةِ،Christianity.

and came to the king and informed him of his affair and his return to Christianity.

فَسَرَّSo was pleasedالْمَلِكُthe kingبِقُدُومِهِwith his arrivalوَاسْتَخْلَفَهُand made him a successorعَلَىoverمُلْكِهِhis kingdomوَجَعَلَهُand made himجَائِزَeffective inالْأَمْرِcommandفِيinسُلْطَانِهِ،his authority.

The king was pleased with his arrival and appointed him over his kingdom, giving him full authority in his realm,

فَأَقَامَso he stayedعِنْدَهُ،with him.فَلَمَّاWhenوَلِيَruledمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahبْنُbinأَبِيAbiسُفْيَانَSufyanبَعَثَhe sentرَجُلاًa manمِنَfromالْأَنْصَارِthe Ansar

so he stayed with him. When Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan came to power, he sent a man from the Ansar

يُقَالُwho is calledلَهُfor himتَمِيمُTamimبْنُbinبِشْرٍBishrإِلَىtoقَيْصَرَCaesarمَلِكِthe king ofالرُّومِthe Romansفِيregardingبَعْضِsome ofأُمُورِهِ،his affairs.

called Tamim bin Bishr, to Caesar, the king of the Romans, for some of his matters.

قَالَSaidتَمِيمٌ:Tamim:فَلَمَّاWhenدَخَلْتُI enteredعَلَىuponقَيْصَرَCaesarأَبْلَغْتُهُI conveyed to himالرِّسَالَةَthe messageوَجَلَسْتُand satعِنْدَهُwith him

Tamim said: When I entered upon Caesar, I conveyed the message to him and sat with him.

فَحَدَّثَنِيSo he spoke to meمَلِيّاًfor a long whileثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:هَلْDoلَكَyou haveفِيinلِقَاءِmeetingرَجُلٍa manمِنَfromالْعَرَبِthe Arabsمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofبَيْتِthe house ofالْمَلِكِ؟royalty?

He spoke to me for a long time, then said: Would you like to meet a man from the Arabs belonging to a royal family?

فَقُلْتُ:I said:وَمَنْAnd whoهُوَ؟is he?قَالَ:He said:جَبَلَةُJabalahبْنُbinالْأَيْهَمِ.al-Ayham.

I said: Who is he? He said: Jabalah bin al-Ayham.

قُلْتُ:I said:إِنَّIndeedلِيfor meفِيinذَلِكَthatأَمَلاًis a hopeوَإِنِّيand indeed I amلَرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromقَوْمِهِ،his people.

I said: I certainly have a desire for that, and I am a man from his people.

فَبَعَثَSo he sentمَعِيwith meرَجُلاًa manحَتَّىuntilأَدْخَلَنِيhe introduced meعَلَيْهِto himوَهُوَwhile heفِيwas inمَجْلِسٍa gatheringلَهُof his

He sent a man with me until he brought me in to see him, while he was in a gathering of his

يَغْشَىthat overwhelmsالْعُيُونَthe eyes withحُسْنُهُits beautyوَكَثْرَةُand the abundance ofتَصَاوِيرِهِ،its decorations,مَطْلِيَّةٌgildedحِيطَانُهُare its wallsبِمَاءِwith water ofالذَّهَبِgoldوَالْفِضَّةِ،and silver,

whose beauty and abundance of decorations dazzle the eyes, its walls gilded with liquid gold and silver,

يَتَلَأْلَأُgleamingتَلَأْلُؤاًwith a gleamوَحَوْلَهُand around himنَفَرٌwere a groupمِنْofبَطَارِقَةِpatricians ofالرُّومِ،the Romans.

gleaming brilliantly, and around him were a group of Roman patricians.

فَسَأَلَنِيSo he asked meمَنْwhoأَنَا،I was,فَانْتَسَبْتُso I stated my lineageلَهُ،to him,فَقَالَ:and he said:حَيَّاكَMay Allah greetاللَّهُyouفَإِنَّنَاfor indeed we areبَنُوsons ofعَمٍّ.an uncle [cousins].

He asked me who I was, so I stated my lineage to him, and he said: Welcome, for we are cousins.

ثُمَّThenأَمَرَhe orderedجُلَسَاءَهُhis companionsفَخَرَجُواso they leftمِنْfromعِنْدِهِhis presenceوَخَلَاand he was aloneبِيwith meيَسْأَلُنِيasking meعَنِaboutالْعَرَبِthe Arabsوَأَمَاكِنِهَا،and their places.

Then he ordered his companions to leave, and he was alone with me, asking me about the Arabs and their settlements.

فَخَبَرْتُهُSo I informed himبِجَمِيعِof allمَاwhatسَأَلَنِيhe asked meعَنْهُ،about,فَبَكَىso he weptحَتَّىuntilاخْضَلَّتْbecame dampلِحْيَتَهُhis beardالدُّمُوعُwith tears

I informed him of everything he asked me about, and he wept until his beard was drenched with tears,

ثُمَّthenأَنْشَأَhe beganيَقُولُ:to recite:

then he began to recite:

تَنَصَّرْتُI became Christianبَعْدَafterالدِّينِthe religionمِنْout ofعَارِshame ofلَطْمَةٍa slap......وَمَاand there wasكَانَnotفِيهَاin itلَوْifصَبَرْتُI had patienceلَهَاwith itضَرَرْany harm.

I turned Christian after the true religion out of shame from a slap... and there would have been no harm in it had I stayed patient.

تَكَنَّفَنِيEncompassed meمِنْهَاfrom itلِجَاجٌobstinacyوَنَخْوَةٌand false pride......فَبِعْتُso I soldبِهَاfor itالْعَيْنَthe sound eyeالصَّحِيحَةَhealthyبِالْعَوَرْfor the one-eyed defect.

Obstinacy and false pride encompassed me because of it... so I traded the healthy eye for the one-eyed defect.

وَيَاAnd ohلَيْتَwould thatأُمِّيmy motherلَمْhad notتَلِدْنِيgiven birth to meوَلَيْتَنِيand would that Iثَوَيْتُremainedأَسِيراًa captiveفِيinرَبِيعَةَRabi'ahأَوْorمُضَرْMudar

And oh, would that my mother had not given birth to me, and would that I remained a captive among Rabi'ah or Mudar.

وَيَاAnd ohلَيْتَنِيwould that Iأَرْعَىpasturedالْمِخَاضَpregnant camelsبِقَفْرَةٍin a desolate land......وَلَمْand had notأُنْكِرْdeniedالْقَوْلَthe statementالَّذِيthatقَالَهُsaidعُمَرُUmar

And oh, would that I were herding pregnant camels in a desolate desert, and had not rejected the statement that Umar made.

وَيَاAnd ohلَيْتَwould thatلِيfor meبِالشَّأْمِin al-Shamأَدْنَىa lowlyمَعِيشَةٍlivelihood......أُجَالِسُsitting withقَوْمِيmy peopleفِيinالْعَشِيَّاتِthe eveningsوَالْبَكْرِand mornings.

And oh, would that I had a modest livelihood in al-Sham, sitting with my people in the evenings and mornings.

أَدِينُfollowingلِمَاwhatدَانُواthey followedبِهِwithمِنْofشَرِيعَةٍa legislation......وَقَدْwhile indeedيَجْلِسُsitsالْعَيْرُthe stubborn donkeyالضَّجُورُrestlessعَلَىuponالدُّبُرِthe pack-saddle.

Practicing the law they followed... while the restless, stubborn pack-animal is seated upon the mount.

قَالَ:He said:ثُمَّThenدَعَاhe calledبِغُدَائِهِfor his lunchفَتَغَدَّيْنَا،so we had lunch.

He said: Then he called for his lunch, and we had lunch.

فَلَمَّاWhenفَرَغْنَاwe finishedخَرَجَتْcame outعَلَيْنَاto usجَارِيَتَانِtwo slave girlsفِيinيَدِthe hand ofإِحْدَاهُمَاone of themرَبِطٌwas a stringed instrumentوَفِيand inيَدِthe hand ofالْأُخْرَىthe otherمِزْمَارٌwas a fluteفَجَلَسَتَا،and they sat.

When we finished, two slave girls came out to us, one holding a stringed instrument and the other a flute, and they sat down.

ثُمَّThenخَرَجَتْcame outعَلَيْنَاto usجَارِيَتَانِtwo slave girlsفِيinيَدِthe hand ofإِحْدَاهُمَاone of themجَامٌwas a bowlفِيهِin itمِسْكٌmuskمَسْحُوقٌgroundوَفِيand inيَدِthe hand ofالْأُخْرَىthe otherجَامٌwas a bowlمَمْلُوءٌfilled withمَاءَwater ofوَرْدٍ،roses,

Then two other slave girls came out to us, one holding a bowl containing ground musk and the other holding a bowl filled with rose water,

فَأَقْبَلَso advancedطَائِرَانِtwo birdsكَانَاthat wereشَبِيهَيْنِresemblingبِطَاوُوسَيْنِtwo peacocksأَوْorتَدْرُجَيْنِtwo partridgesفَسَقَطَاand they fellفِيintoالْجَامِthe bowlوَاحْتَمَلَاand carriedالْمِسْكَthe muskبِجَنَاحَيْهِمَاwith their wingsفَرَشَّاهُand sprinkled itعَلَيْنَا،upon us.

and two birds resembling peacocks or partridges came and fell into the bowl, carried the musk with their wings, and sprinkled it upon us.

وَقَالَAnd saidجَبَلَةُJabalahلِلْمُغَنِّيَتَيْنِ:to the two female singers:غَنِيَانَا،Sing to us,فَفَنَتَاهُ:so they sang to him:

Jabalah said to the two female singers: Sing to us, so they sang to him:

لَمِنِTo whom belongsالدَّارُthe abodeأَقْفَرَتْthat has become desolateبِمُعَانَat Mu'an......بَيْنَbetweenأَعْلَىthe upper part ofالْيَرْمُوكِal-Yarmukفَالْمَسْرَبَانِand al-Masraban

To whom belongs the deserted abode at Mu'an... between the upper Yarmuk and al-Masraban?

ذَاكَThat isمَغْنًىa dwellingلِآلِfor the family ofجَفْنَةَJafnahفِيinالدَّهْرِtime......وَحَقٌّand true isتَصَرُّفُthe turn ofالْأَزْمَانِtimes.

That is a dwelling of the family of Jafnah throughout time... and true is the changing of the times.

قَدْIndeedأَرَانِيI saw myselfهُنَاكَthereحَقّاًtrulyمَكِيناًestablished......عِنْدَwithذِيthe possessor ofالتَّاجِthe crownمَقْعَدِيmy seatوَمَكَانِيand my place.

I have indeed seen myself truly established there... with my seat and place beside the possessor of the crown.

قَالَ:He said:ثُمَّThenبَكَىhe weptحَتَّىuntilاخْضَلَّتْdrenchedدُمُوعُهُhis tearsلِحْيَتَهُ،his beard,ثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:غَنِيَانِي،Sing to me,فَفَنَتَاهُ:so they sang to him:

He said: Then he wept until his tears drenched his beard, and he said: Sing to me, so they sang to him:
