فَانْتَزَعَهُso snatched itبَعْضُهُمَاone of themمِنْfromأُذُنِهَا،her ear,

فَلَمَّاso whenسَمِعَhe heardقَوْلَthe words ofالْمَرْأَةِthe woman
When he heard the woman's words, he remembered the bowstring, took it out, fastened it to his bow, and they turned back with no concern except to save themselves, leaving the young woman.

قِيلَ:It was said:وَاسْتَوْدَعَa man depositedرَجُلٌa manرَجُلاًwith another manمَالاًwealth
It is said that a man deposited wealth with another man, then demanded it back, and the other denied it.
ثُمَّthenطَالَبَهُhe demanded itبِهِfrom himفَجَحَدَهُ،and he denied it,

He took the dispute before Iyas ibn Mu'awiyah the judge and said, "I handed over wealth to him in such and such a place."
وَقَالَ:and said:دَفَعْتُI handed overإِلَيْهِto himمَالاًwealthفِيinمَكَانِplaceكَذَاso-and-soوَكَذَا،and so-and-so,
He took the dispute before Iyas ibn Mu'awiyah the judge and said, "I handed over wealth to him in such and such a place."
قَالَ:he said:فَأَيُّso whatشَيْءٍthingكَانَwasفِيinذَلِكَthatالْمَوْضِعِ؟place?
He asked, "What was in that place?" He replied, "A tree."
قَالَ:he said:شَجَرَةٌ،a tree,

He said, "Go to that place and look at that tree, perhaps God will clarify for you there what will make your right clear, or perhaps you buried your wealth near the tree and forgot, so you will remember when you see the tree."
فَلَعَلَّperhapsاللَّهَGodأَنْthatيُوَضِّحَHe will clarifyلَكَfor youهُنَاكَthereمَاwhatتَبِينُwill become clearبِهِtherebyحَقَّكَyour right
He said, "Go to that place and look at that tree, perhaps God will clarify for you there what will make your right clear, or perhaps you buried your wealth near the tree and forgot, so you will remember when you see the tree."
أَوْorلَعَلَّكَperhaps youدَفَنْتَburiedمَالَكَyour wealthعِنْدَnearالشَّجَرَةِthe treeفَنَسِيتَand forgotفَتَذَكَّرُso you will rememberإِذَاwhenرَأَيْتَyou seeالشَّجَرَةَ،the tree,
He said, "Go to that place and look at that tree, perhaps God will clarify for you there what will make your right clear, or perhaps you buried your wealth near the tree and forgot, so you will remember when you see the tree."
فَمَضَى،so he went,وَقَالَand saidإِيَاسٌIyasلِلْمَطْلُوبِto the accusedمِنْهُ:from him:اجْلِسْsitحَتَّىuntilيَرْجِعَreturnsصَاحِبُكَ،your companion,
So he departed. Iyas said to the accused person, "Sit until your companion returns."
فَجَلَسَso he satوَإِيَاسٌwhile Iyasيَقْضِيwas judgingوَيَنْظُرُand lookingإِلَيْهِat himبَيْنَbetweenكُلِّeveryسَاعَةٍhour
So he sat, while Iyas was adjudicating and glancing at him every now and then.
ثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:تَرَىdo you thinkصَاحِبَكَyour companionبَلَغَhas reachedمَوْضِعَthe place ofالشَّجَرَةِ؟the tree?
Then he said, "Do you think your companion has reached the place of the tree?"
قَالَ:he said:لَا،no,

فَقَالَ:so he said:يَاOعَدُوَّenemy ofاللَّهِGodأَنْتَyou areالْخَائِنُ!the traitor!
So he said, "O enemy of God, you are the traitor!"
قَالَ:he said:أَقِلْنِيforgive meأَقَالَكَmay God forgiveاللَّهُ!you!
He said, "Pardon me, may God pardon you!"
فَأَمَرَso he orderedبِحِفْظِهِhis detentionحَتَّىuntilجَاءَcameخَصْمُهُhis opponent
So he ordered him to be detained until his opponent came, and he said to him, "Take it by your right, for he has confessed."
فَقَالَand he saidلَهُ:to him:خُذْهُtake itبِحَقِّكَby your rightفَقَدْfor indeedأَقَرَّ.he has confessed.

فَغَابَso he was absentوَطَالَتْand prolonged wasغَيْبَتُهُhis absence

وَأَخَذَand tookالدَّنَانِيرَthe dinarsوَجَعَلَand placedمَكَانَهَاin their placeدَرَاهِمَdirhamsوَخَيْطَهُand sewed itوَالْخَاتَمُwhile the sealعَلَىuponحَالِهِ،its condition,
So the deposit-holder slit the bag from its bottom, took the dinars, put dirhams in their place, and sewed it back up with the seal intact.
فَجَاءَso cameالرَّجُلُthe manبَعْدَafterسِتَّsixعَشْرَةَteenسَنَةًyears
The man came after sixteen years and said, "My wealth!" and demanded it.
فَقَالَ:and said:مَالِي.my wealth.وَطَالَبَand demandedبِهِ،it,

فَفَضَاهُ،so they broke it,فَقَالَ:and he said:انْثُرَاempty outمَاwhatفِيهِ،is in it,

فَنَثَرَاهُ،so they emptied it out,فَإِذَاand beholdهِيَthey wereدَرَاهِمُdirhamsبَعْضُهَاsome of themمِنْfromضَرْبِminting ofعَشْرِtenسِنِينَyearsوَأَكْثَرَand moreوَأَقَلَّ،and less,
So they emptied it, and behold, they were dirhams, some of them minted ten years ago, more or less.
فَأَقَرَّso he confessedبِالدَّرَاهِمِto the dirhamsوَأَلْزَمَهُand he obliged himإِيَّاهَاto themحَتَّىuntilخَرَجَhe paidمِنْهَا.them.
So he confessed to the dirhams, and Iyas obliged him to pay them until he discharged the debt.
قَالَ:He said:وَأَوْدَعَand depositedرَجُلٌa manرَجُلاًwith a manمِنْfromأُمَنَاءِtrustees ofإِيَاسٍIyasمَالاًwealthوَحَجَّ،and went for pilgrimage,
He said: A man deposited wealth with one of Iyas's trustees and went on pilgrimage.
فَلَمَّاso whenرَجَعَhe returnedطَالَبَهُhe demanded it from himفَجَحَدَهُ،and he denied it,
When he returned, he demanded it from him, and he denied it.
فَأَتَىso he cameإِيَاساًto Iyasفَأَخْبَرَهُ،and informed him,
So he came to Iyas and informed him.
فَقَالَ:he said:أَتَعْلَمُdo you knowأَنَّكَthat youأَخْبَرْتَinformedغَيْرِيother than meبِذَلِكَ؟of that?
He said, "Do you know if you informed anyone other than me of that?"
قَالَ:he said:لَا،no,
He said, "No."
قَالَ:he said:فَهَلْand didعَلِمَhe knowأَنَّكَthat youأَعْلَمْتَنِي؟informed me?
He said, "Did he know that you informed me?"
قَالَ:he said:لَا،no,
He said, "No."
قَالَ:he said:أَفَنَازَعْتَهُdid you dispute with himبِحَضْرَةِin the presence ofأَحَدٍ؟anyone?
He said, "Did you dispute with him in the presence of anyone?"
قَالَ:he said:لَا،no,
He said, "No."
قَالَ:he said:فَانْصَرِفْso departوَاکْتُمْand concealأَمْرَكَyour affairثُمَّthenعُدْreturnإِلَيَّ،to me,
He said, "Depart, conceal your matter, and then return to me."
وَدَعَاand he calledإِيَاسٌIyasأَمِينَهُhis trusteeذَلِكَthatفَقَالَ:and said:
Iyas called that trustee of his and said:
قَدْindeedحَضَرَhas comeمَالٌwealthكَثِيرٌmuchوَقَدْand I haveرَأَيْتُdeemedأَنْthatأُودِعَكَI deposit with youإِيَّاهُit
"A large amount of wealth has arrived, and I have decided to deposit it with you and keep it in your possession.
وَأُصَيِّرَهُand make itعِنْدَكَwith youفَارْتَدْso seek outلَهُfor itمَوْضِعاًa placeوَأْتِنِيand bring meبِمَنْsomeone whoيَحْمِلُهُwill carry itمَعَكَ.with you.
So find a place for it and bring someone to carry it with you."
فَمَضَىso departedالْأَمِينُ،the trustee,
The trustee departed, and the man returned to Iyas and said to him:
وَعَادَand returnedالرَّجُلُthe manإِلَىtoإِيَاسٍIyasفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:

انْطَلِقْgoإِلَىtoصَاحِبِكَyour companionفَطَالِبْهُand demand from himبِمَالِكَyour wealth
"Go to your companion and demand your wealth; if he gives it to you, well and good, otherwise say that you are informing me."
فَإِنْfor ifأَعْطَاكَhe gives youوَإِلَّاand otherwiseفَقُلْsayإِنَّكَthat youتُعْلِمُنِي،are informing me,

So he came to him and said, "Give me my wealth or else I will come to the judge and inform him."
فَدَفَعَso he handed overإِلَيْهِto himمَالَهُ،his wealth,
So he handed over his wealth to him. The man went to Iyas and said, "He has returned my wealth to me."
وَصَارَand he wentإِلَىtoإِيَاسٍIyasفَقَالَ:and said:قَدْindeedرَدَّhe returnedمَالِيmy wealthعَلَيَّ،to me,

وَجَاءَand cameالْأَمِينُthe trusteeإِلَىtoإِيَاسٍIyasفِيatمَوْعِدِهِhis appointment
Then the trustee came to Iyas at his appointed time, and Iyas glared at him and said, "Get out of my sight, you traitor."
فَانْتَهَرَهُso he rebuked himوَقَالَ:and said:اخْرُجْget outعَنِّيaway from meيَاOخَائِنُ.traitor.

قَالَ:He said:وَأَرَادَand wantedمُعَاوِيَةُMu'awiyahأَنْthatيُوَجِّهَhe sendابْنَهُhis sonيَزِيدَYazidإِلَىtoغَزْوِthe raid ofالصَّائِفَةِal-Sa'ifah
He said: Mu'awiyah wanted to send his son Yazid on the summer raid, and Yazid disliked that and began to recite:
وَكَرِهَand dislikedيَزِيدُYazidذَلِكَthatوَأَنْشَأَand beganيَقُولُ:to say:
He said: Mu'awiyah wanted to send his son Yazid on the summer raid, and Yazid disliked that and began to recite:
تَجَنَّىYou fabricateلَاdo notتَزَالُceaseتَعُدُّcountingذَنْباًa sin......لِتَقْطَعَin order to severوَصْلَthe connection ofحَبْلِكَyour ropeعَنْfromحِبَالِيmy ropes
You falsely accuse and continually count a sin ... to sever the connection of your rope from my ropes.
فَيُوشِكُso it is near thatأَنْthatيُرِيحَكَwill relieve youمِنْfromأَذَاتِيmy harm......نُزُولِيmy dwellingفِيinالْمَهَالِكِperilsوَارْتِحَالِيand my journeying
So soon my dwelling in perils and my journeying will relieve you of my harm.
