وَخَرَجَAnd he went out

And he went out

وَخَرَجَand went outالنَّاسُthe peopleمَعَهُ،with him,

and the people went out with him,

وَفِيمَنْand among those whoخَرَجَwent outأَبُوwas AbuأَيُّوبَAyyubالأَنْصَارِيُّ،al-Ansari,

and among those who went out was Abu Ayyub al-Ansari,

فَلَمَّاso whenقَرُبَhe drew nearمِنْtoقُسْطَنْطِينِيَّةَConstantinople,

so when he drew near to Constantinople,

اشْتَكَىfell illأَبُوAbuأَيُّوبَAyyub,

Abu Ayyub fell ill,

فَأَتَاهُand came to himيَزِيدُYazidعَائِداً،visiting him as a sick person,

and Yazid came to visit him,

فَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:

and said to him:

مَاWhatحَاجَتُكَ؟is your need?

What is your need?

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

أَمَّاAs forدُنْيَاكُمْyour worldly life,فَلَاthere is noحَاجَةَneedلِيfor meفِيهَاin it,

As for your worldly life, I have no need for it,

وَلَكِنْbutسَمِعْتُI heardرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,

but I heard the Messenger of Allah,

صَلَّىmay Allah invoke blessingsاللَّهُand peaceعَلَيْهِ،upon him,

may Allah invoke blessings and peace upon him,

وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,

and grant him peace,

يَقُولُ:saying:

saying:

يُدْفَنُWill be buriedبِجَنْبِbesideقُسْطَنْطِينِيَّةَConstantinopleرَجُلٌa righteousصَالِحٌman,

A righteous man will be buried beside Constantinople,

وَقَدْand Iرَجَوْتُhave hopedأَنْthatأَكُونَهُI am he,

and I have hoped that I am he,

فَقَدِّمْنِيso advance meمَاas much asقَدَرْتَyou were ableعَلَيْهِ،upon it,

so advance me as far as you are able,

فَمَاتَ،so he died.

so he died.

فَلَمَّاSo whenفَرَغَhe finishedمِنْfromجَهَازِهِhis preparation

So when he finished preparing him

وَوَضَعَand placed himعَلَىonسَرِيرِهِhis bier,

and placed him on his bier,

قَدَّمَhe put forwardالْكَتَائِبَthe battalionsبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْهِ،him,

he put the battalions forward before him,

فَنَظَرَso Caesar lookedقَيْصَرُCaesarوَرَأَىand sawأَمْراًa strangeعَجِيباًmatter

so Caesar looked and saw a strange matter

وَشَيْئاًand somethingيُحْمَلُbeing carriedوَالنَّاسُwhile the peopleبِالسِّلَاحِwith weaponsتَحْتَهُ،were beneath it,

and something being carried while the people were under it with weapons,

فَأَرْسَلَso he sentإِلَيْهِ:to him:

so he sent to him:

مَاWhatهَذَاis thisالَّذِيwhichنَرَى؟we see?

What is this that we see?

قَالَHe saidيَزِيدُ:Yazid:

Yazid said:

هَذَاThis isصَاحِبُthe companionنَبِيِّنَا،of our Prophet,

This is the companion of our Prophet,

صَلَّىmay Allah invoke blessingsاللَّهُand peaceعَلَيْهِ،upon him,

may Allah invoke blessings and peace upon him,

وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,

and grant him peace,

أَوْصَىhe enjoinedأَنْthatنَدْفِنَهُwe bury himإِلَىbesideجَنْبِthe side ofمَدِينَتِكُمْyour city,

he enjoined us to bury him beside your city,

وَنَحْنُand weنُنَفِّذُare executingوَصِيَّتَهُhis willأَوْorنَمُوتُwe dieدُونَهُ،protecting him,

and we are executing his will or we will die defending him,

فَأَرْسَلَso he sentإِلَيْهِ:to him:

so he sent to him:

الْعَجَبُHow strangeمِنَis theالنَّاسِ!people!

How strange are the people!

وَمَاAnd whatيَذْكُرُونَهُthey mentionمِنْofدَهَاءِthe shrewdnessأَبِيكَof your father,

And what they mention of your father's shrewdness

وَهُوَwhile heيَبْعَثُكَsends youفِيonهَذَاthisالْبَعْثِexpedition

while he sends you on this expedition

تَدْفِنُto buryصَاحِبَthe companionنَبِيِّكَof your Prophetبِجَنْبِbesideمَدِينَتِي،my city,

to bury the companion of your Prophet beside my city,

فَإِذَاso whenوَلَّيْتَyou turn awayعَنْهُfrom himنَبَشْتُهُI will dig him upفَطَرَحْتُهُand cast himلِلْكِلَابِ،to the dogs.

so when you turn away from him, I will dig him up and throw him to the dogs.

فَأَرْسَلَSo he sentإِلَيْهِto himيَزِيدُ:Yazid:

So Yazid sent to him:

إِنِّيIndeed, Iمَاdid notأَرَدْتُintendأَنْtoأُجَنَّهُhide himحَتَّىuntilأُوْدِعَI depositمَسَامِعَكَin your earsكَلَامِي،my words,

I did not intend to hide him until I let your ears hear my words,

وَكَفَرْتُand I would disbelieveبِالَّذِيin the One whoأَكْرَمْتُhonoredلَهُfor Himهَذَاthisالْمَيِّتَ،dead man,

and I would disbelieve in the One for whom I honored this dead man,

لَئِنْifتَعَرَّضْتَyou touchلَهُhimلَاI will notتَرَكْتُleaveفِيinأَرْضِthe landالْعَرَبِof the Arabsنَصْرَانِيّاًa Christianإِلَّاexcept thatسَفَكْتُI will shedدَمَهُhis blood,

if you touch him, I will not leave a Christian in the land of the Arabs except that I will shed his blood,

وَاسْتَصْفَيْتُconfiscateمَالَهُhis wealth,

confiscate his wealth,

وَسَبَيْتُand take captiveحَرَمَهُ،his womenfolk,

and take his womenfolk captive,

فَأَرْسَلَso sentإِلَيْهِto himقَيْصَرُ:Caesar:

so Caesar sent to him:

كَانَWasأَبُوكَyour fatherأَعْرَفَmore knowledgeableلَكَof youمِنِّيthan me,

Your father knew you better than I did,

وَإِنِّيand indeed Iأَحْلِفُswearبِحَقِّby the right ofالْمَسِيحِ،the Messiah,

and I swear by the right of the Messiah,

عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,

upon him be peace,

لَاthat noneيَحْرُسَهُwill guard itسَنَةَfor a yearأَحَدٌanyoneغَيْرِي.other than me.

that no one other than me will guard it for a year.
