أَدْخَلَنِيHe entered meالْحَمَّامَinto the bath
He took me into the bathhouse and cast upon me some of his garments with which I sufficed, then my master came and sat weeping.
فَطَرَحَand he castعَلَيَّupon meمِنْfromثِيَابِهِhis garmentsمَاwhatاكْتَفَيْتُI sufficedبِهِwith it
and he cast upon me from his garments what I sufficed with
ثُمَّthenحَضَرَcameمَوْلَايَmy masterوَقَعَدَand satيَبْكِي،weeping,
then my master came and sat weeping,
فَقَالَso saidالْعَبَّاسُ:Al-Abbas:عَلَيَّbring meبِفَرَسِيmy horseالْفُلَانِيِّsuch-and-suchوَالْفَرَسِand the horseالْفُلَانِيِّsuch-and-suchوَالْبَغْلِand the muleالْفُلَانِيِّ،such-and-such,
so Al-Abbas said: Bring me my such-and-such horse, and such-and-such horse, and such-and-such mule,
حَتَّىuntilعَدَّhe countedعَشْراً،ten,
until he counted ten,
ثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:عَلَيَّbring meمِنَfromالصَّنَادِيقِthe chestsوَالْكُسْوَةِand the clothingبِكَذَاworth such-and-suchوَمِنْand fromصَنَادِيقِchestsالطَّعَامِof foodبِكَذَا،worth such-and-such,
then he said: Bring me from the chests and clothing worth such-and-such, and from the food chests worth such-and-such,
ثُمَّthenأَمَرَhe orderedلِيfor meبِبَدْرَةٍwith a purse of moneyفِيهَاin itعَشَرَةُtenآلَافِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsوَكِيسٍand a bagفِيهِin itخَمْسَةُfiveآلَافِthousandدِينَارٍdinars
then he ordered for me a purse containing ten thousand dirhams and a bag containing five thousand dinars
وَقَالَand he saidلِصَاحِبِto the chiefشُرْطَتِهِ:of his guard:خُذْهُTake himوَاعْبُرْand crossبِهِwith himإِلَىtoجِسْرِthe bridgeالْأَنْبَارِ،of Al-Anbar,
and said to the chief of his guard: Take him and cross with him to the bridge of Al-Anbar,
فَقُلْتُso I saidلَهُ:to him:إِنَّindeedأَمْرِيmy affairغَلِيظٌis grave
so I said to him: Indeed, my affair is grave,
وَإِنْand ifأَنْتَyouاحْتَجَجْتَargueبِأَنِّيthat Iهَرَبْتُfledبَعَثَwill sendأَمِيرُthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulفِيinطَلَبِيpursuit of meكُلَّeveryمَنْoneعَلَىatبَابِهِhis doorفَأُرَدُّso I will be brought backوَأُقْتَلُ،and killed,
and if you argue that I fled, the Commander of the Faithful will send in pursuit of me everyone at his door, and I shall be brought back and killed,
فَقَالَ:so he said:انْجِSaveبِنَفْسِكَyourselfوَدَعْنِيand leave meأُدَبِّرُto manageأَمْرِي،my affair,
so he said: Save yourself and leave me to manage my affair,
فَقُلْتُ:so I said:وَاللَّهِBy AllahلَاI will notأَبْرَحُdepartمِنْfromبَغْدَادَBaghdadأَوْuntilأَعْلَمُI knowمَاwhatيَكُونُwill beمِنْofخَبَرِكَ،your news,
so I said: By Allah, I will not depart from Baghdad until I know what happens with your news,
فَإِنْso ifاحْتَجْتَyou needإِلَىmyحُضُورِيpresenceحَضَرْتُ،I will be present,
so if you need my presence, I will attend,
فَقَالَso he saidلِصَاحِبِto the chiefالشُّرْطَةِ:of police:إِنْifكَانَisالْأَمْرُthe matterعَلَىuponهَذَاthisفَلْيَكُنْlet it beفِيinمَوْضِعِthe placeكَذَاsuch-and-suchوَكَذَاand such-and-such
so he said to the chief of police: If the matter is thus, let it be in such-and-such a place,
فَإِنْfor ifسَلِمْتُI am safeفِيinغَداةِthe morning ofغَدٍtomorrowفَسَبِيلُthen it is the wayالْمَحَبَّةِof affection
and if I survive by tomorrow morning, then it is the way of affection,
وَإِنْand ifقُتِلْتُI am killedكُنْتُI would haveقَدْindeedوَقَيْتُهُprotected himبِنَفْسِيwith my lifeكَمَاjust asوَقَانِيhe protected meبِنَفْسِهِ،with his life,
and if I am killed, I will have protected him with my life just as he protected me with his life,
وَأَنْشُدُكَand I implore you by AllahاللَّهَAllahأَنْthatتُذْهِبَyou do not take awayمِنْfromمَالِهِhis wealthشَيْئاًanythingقِيمَتُهُwhose value isدِرْهَمٌa dirhamوَتُخَلِّصَهُand that you save himحَتَّىuntilتُخْرِجَهُyou bring him outمِنْfromبَغْدَادَ.Baghdad.
and I implore you by Allah not to take away anything of his wealth worth a dirham, and to protect him until you take him out of Baghdad.
قَالَSaidالرَّجُلُ:the man:فَأَخَذَنِيso took meصَاحِبُthe chiefالشُّرْطَةِof policeفَصَيَّرَنِيand placed meفِيinمَكَانٍa placeيَثِقُhe trustsبِهِin it
The man said: So the chief of police took me and placed me in a place he trusted,
وَتَفَرَّغَand devoted himselfالْعَبَّاسُAl-Abbasلِنَفْسِهِto himselfوَاغْتَسَلَand washedوَتَحَنَّطَand applied embalming herbsوَتَكَفَّنَ.and shrouded himself.
and Al-Abbas devoted himself to his own affairs, washed, applied embalming herbs, and shrouded himself.
قَالَSaidالْعَبَّاسُ:Al-Abbas:فَلَمْand I had notأَفْرُغْfinishedمِنْfromذَلِكَthatحَتَّىuntilوَافَتْنِيmet me / reached meرُسُلُmessengersالْمَأْمُونِof Al-Ma'munفِيinالسَّحَرِthe pre-dawn
Al-Abbas said: I had not finished that when the messengers of Al-Ma'mun reached me in the pre-dawn
وَقَالُوا:and they said:أَمِيرُThe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the FaithfulيَقُولُsaysهَاتِBringالرَّجُلَ،the man,
and said: The Commander of the Faithful says, Bring the man.
فَسَكَتُّso I remained silentوَأَتَيْتُand cameالدَّارَto the houseوَإِذَاand beholdأَمِيرُthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulجَالِسٌwas sittingعَلَيْهِupon himثِيَابُهُwere his garmentsأَمَامَbeforeفِرَاشِهِ،his bed,
So I kept silent and came to the house, and behold, the Commander of the Faithful was sitting fully dressed in front of his bed,
فَقَالَ:and he said:الرَّجُلَ!The man!فَسَكَتُّ،so I remained silent,
and he said: The man! So I kept silent,
فَقَالَ:and he said:وَيْحَكَWoe to you!الرَّجُلَ!The man!
and he said: Woe to you, the man!
فَقُلْتُ:so I said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulاسْمَعْlistenمِنِّي،to me,
So I said: O Commander of the Faithful, listen to me,
فَقَالَ:and he said:أُعْطِيI giveاللَّهَto Allahعَهْداًa covenantلَئِنْthat ifذَكَرْتَyou mentionأَنَّهُthat heهَرَبَfledلَأَضْرِبَنَّI will surely strikeعُنُقَكَ!your neck!
and he said: I give Allah a covenant that if you mention that he fled, I will surely strike off your neck!
فَقُلْتُ:So I said:لَاNoوَاللَّهِby Allahمَاhe did notهَرَبَ،flee,
So I said: No, by Allah, he did not flee,
فَاسْمَعْso listenمِنِّيtoحَدِيثِيmy storyوَحَدِيثَهُand his storyثُمَّthenأَنْتَyouأَعْلَمُknow betterبِمَاregarding whatتَفْعَلُهُyou will doفِيinأَمْرِنَا،our affair,
so listen to my story and his story, then you know best what you will do in our affair,
قَالَ:he said:قُلْ،Speak,
He said: Speak,
فَقُلْتُ:So I said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulكَانَthere wasمِنْfromحَدِيثِيmy storyمَعَهُwith himكَذَاsuch-and-suchوَكَذَا،and such-and-such,
So I said: O Commander of the Faithful, my story with him was such-and-such,
وَقَصَصْتُand I relatedعَلَيْهِto himالْقِصَّةَthe storyوَعَرَّفْتُهُand informed himأَنِّيthat Iكُنْتُwasأُرِيدُdesiringمُكَافَأَتَهُto reward himفَشُغِلْتُso I was distractedعَنْfromذَلِكَthat
and I related the story to him and informed him that I had wanted to reward him, but was distracted from that
حَتَّىuntilإِذَاwhenكَانَit wasالْبَارِحَةَlast nightعَرَّفْتُهُI made him awareوَعَبَرْتُand crossedبِهِwith himجِسْرَthe bridgeالْأَنْبَارِof Al-Anbar
until last night, when I made him aware of it and crossed with him over the bridge of Al-Anbar
وَقُلْتُ:and I said:أَنَاI amمِنْfromسَيِّدِيmy masterأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulبَيْنَbetweenأَمْرَيْنِ،two matters,
and said: I am with my master the Commander of the Faithful between two matters,
إِمَّاeitherتَصْفَحُyou overlookعَنِّيmy faultوَإِمَّاand eitherتَقْتُلُنِيyou kill meوَأَكُونُand I would haveقَدْindeedكَافَأْتُهُrewarded himوَوَقَيْتُهُand protected himبِنَفْسِيwith my lifeكَمَاjust asوَقَانِيhe protected meبِنَفْسِهِ.with his life.
either you pardon me or you kill me, and I will have rewarded him and protected him with my life just as he protected me with his life.
فَلَمَّاSo whenسَمِعَheardالْمَأْمُونُAl-Ma'munالْحَدِيثَthe storyقَالَ:he said:وَيْحَكَ!Woe to you!
When Al-Ma'mun heard the story, he said: Woe to you!
لَاMayجَزَاكَreward youاللَّهُAllahخَيْراًwellعَنْon behalf ofنَفْسِكَyourselfوَعَنَّاand usوَعَنْand on behalf ofهَذَاthisالْفَتَىyoung manالْحُرِّ،the noble,
May Allah not reward you well on behalf of yourself, us, and this noble young man,
إِنَّهُindeed heفَعَلَdidبِكَto youمَاwhatفَعَلَhe didمِنْwithoutغَيْرِanyمَعْرِفَةٍrecognitionوَتُكَافِئُهُand you reward himبَعْدَafterالْمَعْرِفَةِrecognitionبِهَذَا!like this!
for he did what he did to you without knowing you, and you reward him after knowing him like this!
لِمَWhyلَاdid you notعَرَّفْتَنِيinform me ofخَبَرَهُhis newsفَكُنْتُso that I wouldأُكَافِئُهُreward himعَنْكَ؟on your behalf?
Why did you not inform me of his news so that I could reward him on your behalf?
فَقُلْتُ:So I said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulإِنَّهُindeed heوَاللَّهِby Allahهَاهُنَاis right here
So I said: O Commander of the Faithful, by Allah, he is right here
قَدْhavingحَلَفَswornأَنَّهُthat heلَاwill notيَبْرَحُdepartحَتَّىuntilيَعْرِفَhe knowsسَلَامَتِيof my safetyفَإِنْso ifاحْتِيجَit is neededإِلَىforحُضُورِهِhis presenceحَضَرَ،he will attend,
having sworn that he will not depart until he knows of my safety, and if his presence is needed, he will attend,
قَالَ:he said:وَهَذِهِAnd thisوَاللَّهِby Allahمِنْهُfrom himأَعْظَمُis greaterمِنَthanالْأُولَى،the first,
He said: By Allah, this is even greater from him than the first!
فَاذْهَبْSo goإِلَيْهِto himالْآنَnowوَطَيِّبْand cheerنَفْسَهُhis soulوَسَكِّنْand calmرَوْعَهُhis fearوَاعْبُرْand crossبِهِwith himإِلَيَّto meحَتَّىso thatأَتَوَلَّىI may take charge ofمُكَافَأَتَهُrewarding himعَنْكَ.on your behalf.
Go to him now, comfort his heart, calm his fear, and bring him across to me so that I may personally reward him on your behalf.
فَصِرْتُSo I wentإِلَيْهِto himوَقُلْتُ:and said:لِيَسْكُنْLet calmرَوْعُكَyour fearإِنَّforأَمِيرَthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulقَالَsaidكَيْتَsuch-and-suchوَكَيْتَ،and such-and-such,
So I went to him and said: Let your fear be calmed, for the Commander of the Faithful said such-and-such.
فَقَالَ:He said:الْحَمْدُPraiseلِلَّهِbe to Allahالَّذِيwhoلَاis notيُحْمَدُpraisedعَلَىforالسَّرَّاءِeaseوَالضَّرَّاءِand adversityغَيْرُهُ،other than Him,
He said: Praise be to Allah, besides whom none is praised for ease and adversity.
ثُمَّThenتَهَيَّأَhe preparedلِلصَّلَاةِfor prayerفَصَلَّىand prayedرَكْعَتَيْنِtwo units of prayerثُمَّthenجِئْنَاwe came
Then he prepared for prayer, prayed two rak'ahs, and then we came.
فَلَمَّاWhenمَثَلَhe stoodبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْthe hands ofالْمَأْمُونِAl-Ma'munأَدْنَاهُhe brought him nearحَتَّىuntilأَجْلَسَهُhe seated himإِلَىatجَانِبِهِhis sideوَآنَسَهُand cheered himوَحَدَّثَهُand conversed with himحَتَّىuntilحَضَرَwas presentالْغَدَاءُ،lunch,
When he stood before Al-Ma'mun, he brought him close until he seated him by his side, cheered him up, and conversed with him until lunch was served,
ثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:الطَّعَامَ،Food,
then he said: Food,
فَأَكَلَso he ateمَعَهُwith himوَخَلَعَand bestowed robesعَلَيْهِupon himوَعَرَضَand offeredعَلَيْهِto himأَعْمَالَthe governorship / affairsدِمَشْقَof Damascusفَاسْتَعْفَاهُ،so he asked to be excused,
so he ate with him, bestowed robes of honor upon him, and offered him the governorship of Damascus, but he asked to be excused,
ثُمَّthenقَالَsaidالْمَأْمُونُ:Al-Ma'mun:عَلَيَّBring meبِعَشَرَةِtenأَفْرَاسٍhorsesبِسُرُوجِهَاwith their saddlesوَلُجُمِهَاand bridles
then Al-Ma'mun said: Bring me ten horses with their saddles and bridles,
وَعَشَرَةِand tenبِغَالٍmulesبِجَمِيعِwith allآلَتِهَاtheir equipmentوَبِعَشْرِand with tenبُدَرٍpursesوَبِعَشْرِand with tenتُخُوتٍchests/trunksوَعَشَرَةِand tenمَمَالِيكَslave boysبِذَوَاتِهِمْthemselvesوَجَمِيعِand allآلَتِهِمْ،their equipment,
and ten mules with all their equipment, and ten purses, and ten chests, and ten slave boys with their persons and all their equipment,
فَدُفِعَso it was handedذَلِكَthatإِلَيْهِ،to him,
and all of that was handed over to him,
وَكَتَبَand he wroteإِلَىtoعَامِلِهِhis agentبِالْوَصَايَةِwith instructions to take careعَلَيْهِof himوَأَوْغَرَand exempted / lightenedخَرَاجَهُhis tributeوَكَتَبَand wroteإِلَىtoصَاحِبِthe masterالْبَرِيدِof the postأَنْthatتُنْفِذَyou facilitate/dispatchكُتُبَهُhis lettersوَصَرَفَهُand sent him backإِلَىtoبَلَدِهِ.his country.
and Al-Ma'mun wrote to his agent instructing him to take care of him, exempted his land tax, and wrote to the postmaster to facilitate his correspondence and send him back to his country.
قَالَSaidالْعَبَّاسُ:Al-Abbas:فَكَانَand wheneverإِذَاwhenوَرَدَarrivedلَهُfor himكِتَابٌa letterفِيinخَرِيطَةٍa pouchيَقُولُwould sayلِيto meالْمَأْمُونُ:Al-Ma'mun:يَاOعَبَّاسُAbbasهَذَاthisكِتَابُis the letterصَدِيقِكَ.of your friend.
Al-Abbas said: Whenever a letter arrived for him in a pouch, Al-Ma'mun would say to me: O Abbas, this is a letter from your friend.
