وَحَدَّثَAnd narratedرَجُلٌa manعَنْfromجَعْفَرٍJa'farالْعَطَّارِal-Attarقَالَ:he said:

And a man narrated from Ja'far al-Attar, he said:

بَيْنَمَاwhileيَحْيَىYahyaبْنُson ofأَكْثَمَAkthamيُمَاشِيwas walking withالْمَأْمُونَal-Ma'mun

while Yahya ibn Aktham was walking with al-Ma'mun

فِيinبُسْتَانِthe orchard ofمُوسَىMusa

in the orchard of Musa

وَالشَّمْسُand the sun wasعَنْonيَمِينِهِhis right

and the sun was on his right

وَالْمَأْمُونُand al-Ma'mun wasفِيinالظِّلِّthe shade

and al-Ma'mun was in the shade

وَقَدْand he hadوَضَعَplacedيَدَهُhis handعَلَىuponعَاتِقِthe shoulder ofيَحْيَىYahya

and he had placed his hand upon the shoulder of Yahya

وَهُمَاwhile theyيَتَحَدَّثَانِwere conversing

while they were conversing

إِذْwhenرَأَىthoughtالْمَأْمُونُal-Ma'munأَنْtoيَرْجِعَreturnفِيonالطَّرِيقِthe pathالَّذِيwhichجَاءَhe cameمِنْهُ،from,

when al-Ma'mun thought to return on the path from which he came,

فَلَمَّاso whenانْتَهَىhe reachedإِلَىtoالْمَوْضِعِthe placeالَّذِيwhichقَصَدَهُhe intendedقَالَsaidيَحْيَى:Yahya:

so when he reached the place which he intended, Yahya said:

إِنَّكَverily youجِئْتَcameوَعَنْand onيَسَارِكَyour leftالشَّمْسُwas the sun

verily you came and on your left was the sun

وَقَدْand itأَخَذَتْhas affectedمِنْكَyou

and it has affected you

فَكُنْso beأَنْتَyouالآنَnowفِيinمُنْصَرَفِكَyour returnحَيْثُwhereكُنْتَyou were

so be you now in your return where you were

وَأَكُونُand I will beأَنَاIحَيْثُwhereكُنْتَyou wereأَنْتَ،you.

and I will be where you were.

فَقَالَso saidيَحْيَى:Yahya:

so Yahya said:

وَاللَّهِby AllahيَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful

by Allah, O Commander of the Faithful,

لَوْifأَمْكَنَنِيit were possible for meأَنْtoأَقِيَكَprotect youبِنَفْسِيwith myselfمِنْfromهَوْلِthe terror ofالْمَطْلَعِthe risingلَفَعَلْتُI would have done it

if it were possible for me to protect you with myself from the terror of the rising [sun], I would have done it,

فَكَيْفَso howلَاnotأَصْبِرُcan I endureعَلَىtheأَذَىharm ofالشَّمْسِthe sunسَاعَةً؟for an hour?

so how can I not endure the harm of the sun for an hour?

فَقَالَ:he said:وَاللَّهِBy AllahلَاnoبُدَّescapingمِنْfromأَنْthatآخُذَI takeمِنْهَاfrom it

He said: By Allah, there is no escaping that I take from it

كَمَاjust asأَخَذْتَyou tookمِنْكَfrom it

just as you took from it

وَتَأْخُذُand you takeمِنَfromالظِّلِّthe shadeكَمَاjust asأَخَذْتَyou tookمِنْهُ!from it!

and you take from the shade just as you took from it!

فَصَارَso becameالْمَأْمُونُal-Ma'munفِيinمَوْضِعِهِhis place

So al-Ma'mun went to his place

وَصَارَand wentيَحْيَىYahyaفِيtoمَوْضِعِthe place ofالْمَأْمُونِal-Ma'mun

and Yahya went to the place of al-Ma'mun

وَتَمَاشِيَاand they walked together

and they walked together

وَأَخَذَand he tookبِيَدِهِby his hand

and he took him by his hand

فَوَضَعَهَاand placed itعَلَىuponعَاتِقِهِhis shoulder

and placed it upon his shoulder

حَتَّىuntilصَارَhe reachedإِلَىtoالْمَجْلِسِ.the assembly.

until he reached the assembly.

وَحَدَّثَAnd narratedرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromآلِthe family ofاسْوَارَIswarبْنِson ofمَيْمُونَMaimun

And a man from the family of Iswar ibn Maimun narrated

عَنْfromعَمِّهِhis uncleعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنِIswarاسْوَارَhe said:قَالَ:he said:

from his uncle Abdullah ibn Iswar, he said:

دَخَلْتُI enteredعَلَىuponيَحْيَىYahyaبْنِson ofخَالِدٍKhalidالْبَرْمَكِيِّal-Barmakiيَوْماًone day

I entered upon Yahya ibn Khalid al-Barmaki one day

فَقَالَ:and he said:اجْلِسْ،Sit,

and he said: Sit,

وَكُنْتُand I wasأَحَدَone ofكُتَّابِهِhis scribes

and I was one of his scribes.

فَقُلْتُ:So I said:لَيْسَتْthere is notمَعِيwith meدَوَاةٌ،an inkwell,

So I said: I do not have an inkwell with me,

فَقَالَ:so he said:وَيْحَكَ!Woe to you!

so he said: Woe to you!

فِيinالأَرْضِthe earthصَاحِبُis there a master ofصِنَاعَةٍa professionتُفَارِقُهُwhom leavesآلَتُهُ؟his tool?

Is there anyone on earth belonging to a profession whose tool leaves him?

وَأَغْلَظَAnd he spoke harshlyلِيto meفِيinحَرْفٍa matterعَلِمْتُI knewأَنَّهُthat heأَرَادَintendedبِهِby itخَطِّيmy handwriting

And he spoke harshly to me in a manner that I knew he intended by it my handwriting

وَأَرْانِيand he showed meبَعْضَsomeالتَّثَاقُلِreluctanceفِيinالْكِتَابِwriting

and he showed me some reluctance in writing

ظَهَرَit became apparentلِيto meبِهِtherebyأَنَّهُthat heأَرَادَintendedخَطِّيmy handwritingعَلَىforالأَدَبِdisciplineلَاnotغَيْرَ،otherwise,

whereby it became apparent to me that he intended my handwriting for discipline and nothing else,

ثُمَّthenدَعَاhe calledبِدَوَاةٍfor an inkwell

then he called for an inkwell

فَكَتَبْتُand I wroteبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْهِhimكِتَاباًa documentمِنْهُfrom himإِلَىtoالْفَضْلِal-Fadlابْنِهِ،his son,

and I wrote before him a document from him to al-Fadl his son,

وَرَأَىand he sawمِنِّيfrom meبَعْضَsomeالضَّجَرِvexationفِيinمَاwhatكَتَبْتُI wrote

and he saw some vexation from me in what I wrote

فَتَوَهَّمَso he imaginedأَنَّthatذَلِكَthatمِنْwas fromأَجْلِthe sake ofالْكَلِمَةِthe wordالَّتِيwhichكَلَّمَنِيhe spoke to meبِهَا،with it,

so he imagined that that was because of the word with which he had spoken to me,

فَأَرَادَso he wantedأَنْtoيَمْحُوَeraseعَنْfromقَلْبِيmy heartمَاwhatتَوَهَّمَهُhe imaginedعَلَيَّagainst me

so he wanted to erase from my heart what he imagined against me

فَقَالَ:and said:عَلَيْكَupon you isدَيْنٌ؟a debt?

and said: Do you have a debt?

قُلْتُ:I said:نَعَمْ،Yes,

I said: Yes,

قَالَ:he said:مَمَhow much isدَيْنُكَ؟your debt?

he said: How much is your debt?

قُلْتُ:I said:ثَلَاثُمِائَةِthree hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams,

I said: Three hundred thousand dirhams,

فَوَقَعَso he wroteبِخَطِّهِin his handwritingإِلَىtoالْفَضْلِal-Fadlفِيinالْكِتَابِ:the document:

so he wrote in his handwriting to al-Fadl in the document:

وَكُلُّكُمْand all of youقَدْhaveنَالَobtainedشِبْعاًfullnessلِبَطْنِهِfor his belly......وَشِبْعُand the fullness ofالْفَتَىthe youthلُؤْمٌis meannessإِذَاwhenجَاعَis hungryصَاحِبُهُhis companion

And all of you have obtained fullness for your belly... And the fullness of the youth is meanness when his companion is hungry

ثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:

Then he said:

إِنَّverilyعَبْدَAbdullahاللَّهِibnذَكَرَmentionedأَنَّthatعَلَيْهِupon him isدَيْناًa debtيُخْرِجُهُwhich would relieve himمِنْهُfrom itثَلَاثُمِائَةِthree hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams,

Verily Abdullah mentioned that he has a debt of three hundred thousand dirhams which would relieve him from it,

فَإِذَاso whenنَظَرْتَyou lookفِيatكِتَابِيmy documentهَذَاthisوَقَبْلَand beforeأَنْthatتَضَعَهُyou put itمِنْfromيَدِكَyour handفَأَقْسَمْتُthen I adjureعَلَيْكَyouلَمَّاtoحَمَلْتَcarryذَلِكَthatإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِهِhis houseمِنْfromأَخَصِّthe most privateمَالِwealthقِبَلِكَ.you have.

so when you look at this document of mine and before you put it down from your hand, I adjure you to carry that to his house from the most private of your wealth.

قَالَ:He said:فَحَمَلَهَاso carried itالْفَضْلُal-Fadlإِلَيَّto meوَمَاand I do notأَعْلَمُknowلَهَاfor itسَبَباًa causeإِلَّاexceptتِلْكَthatالْكَلِمَةَ.word.

He said: So al-Fadl carried it to me, and I know no cause for it except that word.

وَحَدَّثَAnd narratedإِبْرَاهِيمُIbrahimبْنُson ofمَيْمُونَMaimunقَالَ:he said:

And Ibrahim ibn Maimun narrated, he said:

حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meجِبْرِيلُJibrilبْنُson ofبُخْتِيشُوعَBakhtishu'قَالَ:he said:

Jibril ibn Bakhtishu' narrated to me, he said:

اشْتَرَيْتُI boughtضَيْعَةًan estateفَنَقَدْتُand I paid in cashبَعْضَsomeالثَّمَنِof the priceوَتَعَذَّرَand became difficultعَلَيَّfor meبَعْضُهُsome of it

I bought an estate and paid some of the price in cash, but some of it became difficult for me

فَدَخَلْتُso I enteredعَلَىuponيَحْيَىYahyaوَعِنْدَهُand with him wereوَلَدُهُhis sonsوَأَنَاwhile Iأُفَكِّرُwas thinking

so I entered upon Yahya while his sons were with him and I was thinking

فَقَالَso he saidلِي:to me:مَاwhatلِيfor meأَرَاكَdo I see youمُفَكِّراً؟thinking?

so he said to me: Why do I see you thinking?

فَقُلْتُ:So I said:أَنَاI amفِيinخِدْمَتِكَyour serviceوَقَدْand I haveاشْتَرَيْتُboughtضَيْعَةًan estateبِسَبْعِfor sevenمِائَةِhundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhams

So I said: I am in your service and I have bought an estate for seven hundred thousand dirhams

وَنَقَدْتُand I paid in cashبَعْضَsomeالثَّمَنِof the priceوَتَعَذَّرَand became difficultعَلَيَّfor meبَعْضُهُ.some of it.

and I paid some of the price in cash, but some of it became difficult for me.

فَدَعَاso he calledبِالدَّوَاةِfor the inkwellوَكَتَبَ:and wrote:

So he called for the inkwell and wrote:

يُعْطَىlet be givenجِبْرِيلُJibrilسَبْعَsevenمِائَةِhundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.

Let Jibril be given seven hundred thousand dirhams.

ثُمَّthenدَفَعَhe handedالْكِتَابَthe documentإِلَىtoوَلَدِهِhis son

Then he handed the document to his son

فَوَقَّعَso signedفِيهِupon itكُلُّeachوَاحِدٍoneمِنْهُمْof themبِثَلَاثُمِائَةِwith three hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams,

and each one of them signed upon it with three hundred thousand dirhams,

فَقُلْتُ:so I said:جُعِلْتُmay I be madeفِدَاكَ!your ransom!

so I said: May I be made your ransom!

قَدْI haveأَدَّيْتُpaidعَامَّةَmost ofالثَّمَنِthe price

I have paid most of the price

وَإِنَّمَاand indeedبَقِيَremainedعَلَيَّupon meأَقَلُّهُ،the least of it,

and indeed only the least of it remained upon me,

فَقَالَ:so he said:اصْرِفْspendذَلِكَthatفِيonبَعْضِsomeمَاof whatيَنُوبُكَ.befalls you.

so he said: Spend that on some of what befalls you.

ثُمَّthenصِرْتُI wentإِلَىtoالرَّشِيدِal-Rashid

Then I went to al-Rashid

فَقَالَ:and he said:مَاwhatأَبْطَأَdelayedبِكَ؟you?

and he said: What delayed you?

قُلْتُ:I said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful

I said: O Commander of the Faithful

كُنْتُI wasعِنْدَatأَبِيكَyour fatherوَإِخْوَتِكَand your brothers

I was at your father's and your brothers'

فَفَعَلُواand they didبِيto meكَذَاsuchوَكَذَا،and such,

and they did to me such and such,

قَالَ:he said:فَمَاso whatحَالِيis my statusأَنَا؟I?

he said: So what is my status?

ثُمَّthenدَعَاhe calledبِدَابَّتِهِfor his mountفَرَكِبَand rodeإِلَىtoيَحْيَىYahya

Then he called for his mount and rode to Yahya

فَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:يَاOأَبَتِfatherخَبَّرَنِيinformed meجِبْرِيلُJibrilبِمَاabout whatكَانَoccurred

and said to him: O father, Jibril informed me about what occurred

فَمَاso what isحَالِيmy statusمِنْamongبَيْنِtheوَلَدِكَ؟sons of yours?

so what is my status among your sons?

فَقَالَ:so he said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulمُرْorderلَهُfor himبِمَاwith whatشِئْتَyou wishيُحْمَلْlet it be carriedإِلَيْهِ،to him,

so he said: O Commander of the Faithful, order for him whatever you wish, and let it be carried to him,

فَأَمَرَso he orderedبِحَمْلِthe carrying ofمَالٍwealthإِلَىtoجِبْرِيلَ.Jibril.

so he ordered wealth to be carried to Jibril.

وَكَانَAnd wasإِبْرَاهِيمُIbrahimبْنُson ofجِبْرِيلَJibrilعَلَىoverشُرْطَةِthe police ofالْفَضْلِal-Fadl

And Ibrahim ibn Jibril was over the police force of al-Fadl

فَوَجَّهَهُso he dispatched himإِلَىtoكَابُلَKabulفَافْتَتَحَهَاand he conquered itوَغَنِمَand gainedغَنَائِمَspoilsكَثِيرَةًabundant

so he dispatched him to Kabul and he conquered it and gained abundant spoils

ثُمَّthenوَلَّاهُhe appointed him overسِجِسْتَانَ،Sijistan,

then he appointed him over Sijistan,

فَلَمَّاso whenانْصَرَفَhe returnedمِنْهَاfrom itكَانَthere wasعِنْدَهُwith himمِنْfromمَالِthe wealth ofالْخَرَاجِthe land taxأَرْبَعَةُfourآلَافِthousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams,

so when he returned from it, there was with him from the wealth of the land tax four million dirhams,

فَلَمَّاso whenقَدِمَhe arrived inبَغْدَادَBaghdadوَبَنَىand builtدَارَهُhis houseفِيinالْبَغَوِيِّينَal-Baghawiyyin

so when he arrived in Baghdad and built his house in al-Baghawiyyin

اسْتَزَارَhe invited to visitالْفَضْلَal-Fadlبْنَson ofيَحْيَىYahyaلِيُرِيَهُto show himنِعْمَتَهُhis bountyعَلَيْهِupon him

he invited al-Fadl ibn Yahya to visit to show him his bounty upon him

وَأَعَدَّand he preparedالْهَدَايَاthe giftsوَالطُّرَفَand curiositiesوَآنِيَةَand vessels ofالذَّهَبِgoldوَالْفِضَّةِand silver

and he prepared the gifts, curiosities, vessels of gold and silver

وَالْوُصَفَاءَand male servantsوَالْوَصَائِفَand female servantsوَالدَّوَابَّand mountsوَالْقِبَابَand domesوَالثِّيَابَand garments

and male servants, female servants, mounts, domes, garments

وَمَاand whateverتَهَيَّأَwas readiedلِمِثْلِهِfor the like of him

and whatever was readied for the like of him

وَوَضَعَand he placedالأَرْبَعَةَthe fourآلَافِthousandأَلْفِthousandالدِّرْهَمِdirhamsفِيinنَاحِيَةٍa sideمِنَofالدَّارِ،the house,

and he placed the four million dirhams in a side of the house,

فَلَمَّاso whenتَغَدَّىhe had lunchالْفَضْلُal-Fadlقَدَّمَhe presentedإِلَيْهِto himتِلْكَthoseالْهَدَايَا،gifts,

so when al-Fadl had lunch, he presented those gifts to him,

فَأَبَىso he refusedأَنْtoيَقْبَلَacceptمِنْهَاfrom itشَيْئاًanything

so he refused to accept anything from it

وَقَالَ:and said:لَمْI did notآتِكَcome to youلِأَسْلُبَكَ!to plunder you!

and said: I did not come to you to plunder you!

فَقَالَ:so he said:أَيُّهَاOالأَمِيرُPrinceإِنَّهَاverily it isنِعْمَتُكَyour bountyعَلَيَّ!upon me!

so he said: O Prince, verily it is your bounty upon me!

قَالَ:he said:وَلَكَand for youعِنْدَنَاwith us isمَزِيدٌ.more.

he said: And for you with us is more.

قَالَ:he said:فَلَمْso he did notيَزَلْceaseيَطْلُبُaskingإِلَيْهِhim

He said: So he did not cease asking him

فَأَخَذَuntil he tookمِنْfromجَمِيعِallذَلِكَthatسَوْطاًa whipسِجْزِيّاً،Sijizi,

until he took from all of that a Sijizi whip,

فَقَالَ:so he said:هَذَاthis isمِنْfromآلَةِthe gear ofالْفُرْسَانِ،the horsemen,

so he said: This is from the gear of horsemen,

فَقَالَso saidإِبْرَاهِيمُ:Ibrahim:أَيُّهَاOالأَمِيرُPrinceفَهَذَاthen is thisالْمَالُwealthمِنْfromمَالِthe wealth ofالْخَرَاجِthe land taxتَأْمُرُdo you orderبِقَبْضِهِ؟its seizure?

so Ibrahim said: O Prince, then is this wealth from the wealth of the land tax—do you order its seizure?

قَالَ:he said:هُوَit isلَكَ،for you,

he said: It is for you,

فَأَعَادَso he repeatedعَلَيْهِupon himالْقَوْلَthe statementمِرَاراً،repeatedly,

so he repeated the statement to him repeatedly,

فَقَالَ:so he said:مَاthere is notلَكَfor youبَيْتٌa houseيَسَعُهُ،that can contain it,

so he said: You have no house that can contain it,

فَوَهَبَso he bestowedلَهُto himالْمَالَthe wealthبَعْدَafterأَنْthatكَانَit hadقَدْalreadyصَارَbecomeإِلَيْهِhisأَلْفُthousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.

so he bestowed the wealth upon him after it had already become one million dirhams.
