Barley.

الطَّرِيقَةُThe methodالَّتِيthatتُصْنَعُis madeبِهَاwith itالْجُعَةُthe beerبَعْدَAfterأُسْبُوعٍa week

The method by which beer is made after a week.

أَمْرٌAn orderبِحَرَاثَةِto plowالْحَقْلِthe fieldالصَّغِيرِthe smallالْمُجَاوِرِadjacentلِلْبُسْتَانِto the orchardالْمُخَصَّصِdesignatedمُنْذُsinceالْقَدَمِthe old timesلِلْحَيَوَانَاتِfor the animalsالَّتِيthatلَمْno longerتَعُدُّare able toتَسْتَطِيعُto work

It is an order to plow the small field adjacent to the orchard designated since the old times for the animals that can no longer work.

وَذَرِيْعَتُهُAnd his justificationفِيwasذَٰلِكَthatالْحَالَةُthe conditionالسَّيِّئَةُbadالَّتِيthatيُوجَدُexistsعَلَيْهَاon itالْمَرْعَىthe pastureوَالْحَاجَةُand the needإِلَىtoزَرْعِهِhis cultivationمِنْagainجَدِيدٍnew

And his justification for that is the bad condition of the pasture and the need to cultivate it again.

وَفِيAnd laterمَاwhatبَعْدَafterعُلِمَit was learnedأَنَّthatنَابُولِيُونَNapoleonكَانَwasيَعْتَزِمُintendingزَرْعَto sow

And later it was learned that Napoleon was intending to sow.

فِيAtذَٰلِكَthatالْوَقْتِtimeوَقَعَa strange incident occurredحَادِثٌan incidentغَرِيبٌstrangeلَمْdid notيَسْتَوْعِبَcomprehendالْجَمِيعَeveryoneتَقْرِيبًاalmostمَعْنَاهُhis meaningفِيinمُنْتَصَفِmidاللَّيْلِnight

At that time, a strange incident occurred that almost no one could comprehend.

حَدَثَThere happenedصَخَبٌa commotionعُنِيفٌviolentفِيinالسَّاحَةِthe square

There happened a violent commotion in the square.

هَرَعَتْThe animals rushedالْحَيَوَاتُthe animalsإِلَىtoالخَارِجِoutsideحَيْثُwhereضَوْءَthe moonlightالْقَمَرِthe moonيُبَدِّدُdispelsالظَّلَامَthe darkness

The animals rushed outside where the moonlight dispelled the darkness.

فِيAtأَسْفَلَthe bottomحَائِطِwallالْحَظِيرَةِof the barnحَيْثُwhereكُتِبَتْwas writtenالْوَصَايَاthe commandmentsالسَّبْعُthe seven

At the bottom of the wall of the barn, where the seven commandments were written.

رَأَوْاThey sawسُلَّمًاa ladderمُحَطَّمًاbrokenإِلَىintoنِصْفَيْنِtwo halvesوَبِالْقُرْبِAnd nearbyمِنْهُthere wasسْكُويلَرSquealerمَنْبَطِحًاlyingعَلَىonبَطْنِهِhis stomachوَيَبْدُوAnd appearedأَنَّهُthat heفَقَدَlostوَعِيَّهُhis consciousnessوَحَوْلَهُAnd around himيُوجَدُthere areمِصْبَاحٌa lampفُرْشَاةٌa brushوَسِطْلٌand a bucketصِبَاغَةٌpaintبَيْضَاءَwhiteمُقَلَّبَةٌoverturnedأَحَاطَتْsurroundedكُلُّallالْكِلابِthe dogsبِالضَّحِيَّةِthe victim.

They saw a ladder broken in two halves, and nearby Squealer lying on his stomach, and it appeared that he had lost consciousness, and around him there were a lamp, a brush, and an overturned white paint bucket; all the dogs surrounded the victim.

وَعِنْدَمَاAnd whenتَمَكَّنَhe managedمِنْtoالنَّهُوضِget upوَالْمَشْيِand walkرَافَقَتْهُhe was accompaniedإِلَىtoالْمَنْزِلِthe house.

And when he managed to get up and walk, he was accompanied to the house.

لَاNoأَحَدٌoneمِنْofالْحَيَوَانَاتِthe animalsاسْتَطَاعَcouldأَنْtoيَفْهَمَunderstandمَاwhatحَدَثَhappenedبِاسْتِثْنَاءِexceptالْعَجُوزِthe oldبِنْيَامِينَBenjaminالَّذِيwhoأَمَّأnoddedبِخُنْخِنَةٍwith his snoutمُفَضِّلًاpreferringالصَّمْتَsilence

No one of the animals could understand what happened, except for the old Benjamin who nodded with his snout, preferring silence.

بَعْدَAfterبِضْعَةَa fewأَيَّامٍdaysلَاحَظَتْobservedالْعَنْزَةُthe goatمُورِيِلُMurielوَهِيَand she wasتَقْرَأُreadingالْوَصَايَاthe commandmentsالسَّبْعُthe sevenأَنَّthatوَصِيَّةٌa commandmentأُخْرَىanotherفَهِمَتْهَاthat she understoodالْحَيَوَانَاتُthe animalsخَطَأًincorrectly.

After a few days, the goat Muriel observed while reading the seven commandments that another commandment was misunderstood by the animals.

فَقَدْFor she always thoughtكَانَتْit wasدَائِمًاalwaysتَظُنُّshe thoughtأَنَّthatالْوَصِيَّةُthe commandmentالْخَامِسَةُthe fifthتَقُولُsaidيَحْظُرُprohibitsعَلَىforالْحَيَوَانِthe animalشَرَبَto drinkالْخَمْرَalcoholفِيwhileحِينِwhereأَنَّهَاthat itلَمْdid notتُلاحِظْnoticeوُجُودَthe presenceكَلِمَتَيِنِtwo words.

For she always thought that the fifth commandment said: 'It prohibits the animal from drinking alcohol' while she did not notice the presence of two words.

فِيWhileحِينِwhenأَنَّthatالْوَصِيَّةُthe commandmentتَقُولُsaysبِالْحَرْفِliterallyيَحْظُرُprohibitsعَلَىforالْحَيَوَانِthe animalشَرَبَto drinkالْخَمْرَalcoholحَتَّىuntilالثَّمَالَةِintoxication.

While the commandment literally says: 'It prohibits the animal from drinking alcohol until intoxication.'
