وَقَدْAndتُحَدَّدَwas determinedلِلْحِصَانِfor the horseالْمُتَقَاعِدِthe retiredخَمْسَةَfiveأَرْطَالٍpoundsمِنْofالْقَمْحِwheatيَوْمِيًّا،daily,فِيinفَصْلِthe seasonالْشِّتَاءِwinterوَخَمْسَةَand fifteenعَشَرَةًpoundsمِنْofالتَّبْنِ،hay,إِضَافَةًin additionإِلَىtoجَزَرَةٍa carrotوَاحِدَةٍoneأَوْorرُبَّمَاperhapsتُفَّاحَةًan appleفِيonأَيَّامِdaysالْأَعْيَادِ.the holidays.
And for the retired horse, five pounds of wheat were determined daily, in winter, and fifteen pounds of hay, in addition to one carrot or perhaps an apple on holidays.

لَكِنَّButفِيinانْتِظَارِwaiting forذَٰلِكَthatجَاءَcameالْشِّتَاءُthe winterقَاسِيًاharshمِثْلَlikeسَابِقِيهِits predecessorوَأَصْبَحَتْand becameالْحَيَاةُlifeصَعْبَةً.difficult.

وَتَمَّAnd wasتَخْفِيضٌreductionحَصَصِrationsالطَّعَامِ،of food,بَاسْتِثْنَاءِexcept forحَصَصِportionsالْخِنَازِيرِthe pigsوَالْكِلَابِand the dogsوَقَدْAndعَلَّلَjustifiedسْكُيِلَرSquealerذَٰلِكَthatقَائِلًا:saying:إِنَّIndeed,الْمُسَاوَاةُequalityالصَّارِمَةُstrictبِالنِّسَبَةِwith regard toإِلَىtoحَصَصِrationsالطَّعَامِ،of food,أَمْرٌis a matterيَتَنَاقَضُthat contradictsمَعَwithالْمَبَادِئِthe principlesالْحَيَوَانِيَّةِanimalisticوَعَلَىAnd generally,الْعُمُومِ،in general,فَهُوَhe hasلَمْnotيَجِدْfindأَيَّanyصُعُوبَةٍdifficultyفِيinإِقْنَاعِconvincingالْحَيَوَانَاتِthe animalsالْأُخْرَىotherبِأَنَّthatأَعْلَافَهَاits feedفِيinالْوَاقِعِfact,لَمْdid notتَعْرِفْknowأَيَّanyنَقْصٍ،shortage,عَكْسَcontrary toمَاwhatيَظْهَرُ.appears.
