وَقَوْلُهُ:And His saying:﴿[عَلَىUponالْحَيِّthe Livingالَّذِيwhoلَاdoes notيَمُوتُdie.يَقُولُونَ:They say:إِنَّThatالْحُكْمَthe judgementإِذَاifاعْتَمَدَis dependentبِوَصْفٍ؛on a description;دَلَّit indicatesعَلَيْهَاon itذَٰلِكَthatالْوَصْفُ.description.

And His saying: 'Upon the Living who does not die' indicates that the judgement, if it is dependent on a description, points to that description.

لَوْIfقَالَa speaker said:قَائِلٌ:A person says:لِمَاذَاwhyلَمْwas notتَكُنit beالْآيَةُthe verseوَتَوَكَّلْand relyعَلَىonالْقَوِيِّthe Mightyالْعَزِيزِ؛the Exalted;لِأَنَّbecauseالْقُوَّةَthe strengthوَالْعِزَّةَand the mightأَنْسَبُis more fittingفِيْمَاin what

If a speaker says: 'Why was not the verse "And rely on the Mighty, the Exalted;" used, since strength and might seem more fitting?!'

فَالْجَوَابُ:The answer is:أَنَّهُthat itلَمَّاwhenكَانَتِwereالْأَصْنَامُthe idolsالَّتِيthatيَعْتَمِدُونَrelyingعَلَيْهَا؛on them;هَـٰؤُلَـاءِtheseبِمَنْزِلَةِare likeالْأَمْوَاتِ؛the dead;كَمَاasقَالَHe saidتَعَالَى:the Most High:﴿[وَالَّذِينَAnd those whoيَدْعُونَinvokeمِنْfromدُونِother thanاللَّهِAllahلَاdo notيَخْلُقُونَcreateشَيْئًاanythingوَهُمْand theyيُخْلَقُونَare created.

The answer is: when the idols that these depend upon are like the dead; as He, the Most High, said: 'And those who invoke other than Allah do not create anything, and they are created.'

أَمْوَتٌThey are deadغَيْرُnotأَحْيَاءٌaliveوَمَاand whatيَشْعُرُونَthey feelأَيَّانَwhenيُبْعَثُونَthey will be resurrected.

They are dead, not alive, and they do not feel when they will be resurrected.

][النحل[An-Nahl::۲۰20--۲۱]؛21];فَقَالَ:He then said:تَوَكَّلْRelyعَلَىonمَنْwhomلَيْسَis notصِفَتُهُHis attributeكَصِفَةِlike the attributeهَـٰذِهِof theseالْأَصْنَامُ،idols,وَهُوَand He isالْحَيُّthe Livingالَّذِيwhoلَاdoes notيَمُوتُ،die,عَلَىuponأَنَّهُthat Heقَالَsaidفِيinآيَةٍanother verse:﴿[وَتَوَكَّلْAnd relyعَلَىonالْعَزِيزِthe Exaltedالرَّحِيمِ؛the Merciful;][الشعراء:[Ash-Shu'ara:۲۱۷]؛217];لِأَنَّBecauseالْعِزَّةَthe mightأَنْسَبُis more appropriateفِيinهَذَاthisالسِّياقِ.context.

He then said: 'Rely on one whose attribute is not like that of these idols, and He is the Living who does not die,' for he stated in another verse: 'And rely on the Exalted, the Merciful;' because the might is more appropriate in this context.

وَوَجْهٌAnd another reasonآخَر:is that:أَنَّthatالْحَيَّthe Livingاسْمٌis a nameيَتَضَمَّنُwhich includesجَمِيعَallالْصِّفَاتِthe attributesالْكَامِلَةِthe perfectفِيinالْحَيَاةِ،life,وَمِنْand ofكَمَالٍthe perfectionحَيَاتِهِof His lifeعَزَّ وَجَلَّGlory be to Himأَنَّهُthat Heأَهْلٌis worthyلِأَنَّbecauseيُعْتَمَدُto be reliedعَلَيْهِ.upon Him.

And another reason is that: the Living is a name that includes all perfect attributes in life, and of the perfection of His life, Glory be to Him, is that He is worthy to be relied upon.

وَقَوْلُهُAnd His sayingلَاdoes notيَمُوتُ؛die;يَعْنِيmeansلِكَمَالِfor the perfectionحَيَاتِهِof His lifeلَاdoes notيَمُوتُ،die,فَيَكُونُThus it becomesتَعَلُّقُهَاits connectionبِمَاwith whatقَبْلَهَاpreceded itالْمَقْصُودَthe intendedبِهِwith itإِفَادَةًis to conveyأَنَّthatهَذِهِthisالْحَيَاةَlifeكَامِلَةًis completeلَاdoes notيَلْحَقُهَاperuse it;فَنَاءٌ.annihilation.

And His saying 'does not die;' means for the perfection of His life that He does not die, so its connection with what preceded it is intended to convey that this life is complete and is not subject to annihilation.

فِيInهَذِهِthisالْآيَةِ،verse,مِنْthere areأَسْمَاءِnamesاللَّهِof Godالْحَيِّ،the Living,وَفِيَهَاand in itمِنْofصِفَاتِهِ:His attributes:الْحَيَاةِ،life,وَانْتِفَاءِand the negationالْمَوْتِof deathالْمَتَضَمِّنِthat includesلِكَمَالِfor the perfectionالْحَيَاةِ؛of life;فَفِيهَاthus it containsصِفَتَانtwo attributesوَاسْمٌ.and a name.

In this verse, there are names of God such as the Living, and in it there are of His attributes: life, and the negation of death that includes the perfection of life; thus it contains two attributes and a name.
