النَّاتِجُthe resultعَنْهُمَاof them bothإِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyكَانُواwereيُسَرِعُونَrushingفِيinالْخَيْرَاتِthe good deedsوَandيَدْعُونَنَاthey call on usرَغَبًاout of desireوَرَهَبًاand out of fear
Indeed, they were rushing in good deeds, and they called on us out of desire and fear.
فَ بِالْمَحَبَّةِSo with loveتَكُونُthere isالرَّغْبَةُthe desireوَبِالتَّعْظِيمِand with glorificationتَكُونُthere isالرَّهْبَةُthe fearوَ الْخَوْفُand the fear.
So with love, there is desire, and with glorification, there is fear.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonكَانَتْit wasالْعِبَادَةُworshipأَوَامِرَcommandsوَنَوَاهِىَand prohibitionsأَوَامِرَcommandsمَبْنِيَّةٌbasedعَلَىonالرَّغْبَةِdesireوَطَلَبٍand the pursuitالْوُصُولِto reachإِلَىtoالْأَمْرِthe commandوَنَوَاهِيَand prohibitionsمَبْنِيَّةٌbasedعَلَىonالتَّعْظِيمِglorificationوَالرَّهْبَةِand fearمِنَofهَذَاthisالْعَظِيمِgreat.
And for this reason, worship consists of commands and prohibitions; commands based on desire and the pursuit to reach the command, and prohibitions based on glorification and fear of this great one.
فَإِذَاSo ifأَحْبَبْتَyou lovedاللَّهَGodعَزَّthe Exaltedوَجَلَّ؛and Majestic;رَغِبْتَyou desiredفِيinمَاwhatعِندَهُ؛is with Him;وَرَغِبْتَand desiredفِيinالْوُصُولِreachingإِلَيْهِ؛to Him;وَطَلَبْتَand you soughtالطَّرِيقَthe wayالْمُوَصِّلَةَleadingإِلَيْهِ؛to Him;وَقُمْتَand you performedبِطَاعَتِهِHis obedienceعَلَىinالْوَجْهِthe faceالأَكْمَلِ؛the best;وَإِذَاand ifعَظَّمْتَهُ؛you honored Him;خِفْتَyou fearedمِنْهُfrom Himكُلَّمَاwheneverهَمَمْتَyou intendبِمَعْصِيَةٍ؛to sin;اسْتَشْعَرْتَyou feltعَظَمَةَthe greatnessالْخَالِقِof the Creatorعَزَّthe Exaltedوَجَلَّ،and Majestic,فَنَفَرْتَ،so you turned away,وَلَقَدْand indeedهَمَّتْshe intendedبِهِwith himوَهَمَّand he intendedبِهَاwith herلَوْلَاif notأَنْthatرَمَىcastبُرْهَانًاa proofرَبِّهِof his Lordكَذَلِكَthusلِنَصْرِفَto divertعَنْهُfrom himالسُّوءَevilوَالْفَحْشَاءِand immorality
So if you loved Allah the Exalted and Majestic; you desired what is with Him, and you sought the way leading to Him, and performed His obedience in the best manner; and if you honored Him; you feared from Him whenever you intended to sin; you felt the greatness of the Creator the Exalted and Majestic, so you turned away, and indeed she intended with him and he intended with her if not that a proof of his Lord cast thus to divert evil and immorality from him.
فَهَذِهِSo thisمِنْis fromنِعْمَةٍa blessingاللَّهِof Allah;عَلَيْكَ؛upon you;إِذَاifهَمَمْتَyou intendبِمَعْصِيَةٍ؛to sin;وَجَدْتَyou findاللَّهَAllahأَمَامَكَ،before you,فَهَبَتَso you rushedوَخِفْتَand you fearedوَتَبَاعَدْتَand you stayed awayعَنْfromالمَعْصِيَةِ؛sin;لَأَنَّكَbecause youتَعْبُدُworshipاللَّهَAllahرَغَبَةًout of desireوَرَهَبًا.and fear.
So this is from a blessing of Allah upon you; if you intend to sin; you find Allah before you, so you rush and fear and you stay away from sin; because you worship Allah out of desire and fear.
فَمَاSo whatمَعْنَىis the meaningالْعِبَادَةُ؟of worship?
So what is the meaning of worship?
الْعِبَادَةُ:Worship:تُطْلَقُIt is appliedعَلَى، أَمْرَيْنِto two mattersعَلَىonالْفِعْلِthe actionوَالمَّفْعُولِ.and the object.
Worship: It is applied to two matters: the action and the object.
تُطْلَقُIt is appliedعَلَىtoالْفِعْلِthe actionالَّذِيthatهُوَisالتَّعَبُّدُworshipفَيُقَالُ:so it said:عَبَدَA slaveالرَّجُلُthe manرَبَّهُhis Lordعِبَادَةًworshipوَتَعَبُّدًا،and he worships,وَإِطْلاَقُهَاand its applicationعَلَىtoالتَّعَبُّدِthe worshipمِنْofبَابِthe categoryإِطْلَاقِof applyingاسْمٍthe nameالْمَصْدَرِof the sourceعَلَىtoالْمَصْدَرِ،the source,وَنَعْرِفُهَاand we know itبِاعتبارin consideration ofإِطْلَاقِهَاits applicationعَلَىtoالْفِعْلِthe actionبِأَنَّهَا:that it is:التَّذَلُّلُhumilityلِلَّهِto Allahعَزَّthe Exaltedوَجَلَّ؛and Majestic;بِفِعْلِby doingأَوَامِرِهِHis commandsوَاجْتِنَابِand avoidingنَوَاهِيهِ.His prohibitions.
It is applied to the action that is worship, so it is said: A slave worships his Lord; and its application to worship is from the category of applying the name of the source to the source, and we know it in consideration of its application to the action that it is: humility to Allah the Exalted and Majestic; by doing His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
وَكُلُّAnd everyoneمَنْwhoذَلَّhumblesلِلَّهِto Allah;عَزَّthe Exaltedوَجَلَّand Majestic;﴿(وَلِلَّهِand for Allahالْعِزَّةُis the glory;وَلِرَسُولِهِand for His Messenger;﴾)[المُنافِقُونَ[hypocrites::٨]8
And everyone who humbles himself to Allah; for Allah is the glory, and for His Messenger.
