وَهَذَاAnd thisأَبُوAbuالدَّرْدَاءِAl-Dardaكَانَwasيَقُولُsayingإنَّthatأَشَدَّthe most severeمَاwhatأَخَافُI fearعَلَىforنَفْسِيmyselfيَوْمَthe dayالْقِيَامَةِof Resurrectionأَنْthatيُقَالَit will be saidلِيto meيَاOأَبَاAbuالدَّرْدَاءِAl-Dardaقَدْindeedعَلِمْتَyou knewفَكَيْفَso howعَمِلْتَdid you actفِيمَاin whatعَلِمْتَyou knew
And this Abu Al-Darda was saying: 'The most severe thing I fear for myself on the Day of Resurrection is that it will be said to me: O Abu Al-Darda, you knew, so how did you act regarding what you knew?'
وَكَانَAnd he wasيَقُولُsayingلَوْifتَعْلَمُونَyou knewمَاwhatأَنتُمْyou areلَاقُونَencounteringبَعْدَafterالْمَوْتِdeathلَمَاyou would notأَكَلْتُمْeatطَعَامًاfoodعَلَىonشَهْوَةٍdesireوَلَاand notشَرِبْتُمْyou drinkشَرَابًاbeverageعَلَىonشَهْوَةٍdesireوَلَاand notدَخَلْتُمْyou enteredبَيْتًاa houseتَسْتَظِلُّونَyou find shadeفِيهِin itوَلَخَرَجْتُمْbut you would go outإِلَىtoالصَّعِيدِthe open spaceتَضْرِبُونَbeatingصُدُورَكُمْyour chestsوَتَبْكُونَand weepingعَلَىoverأَنفُسِكُمْyourselves
And he was saying: 'If you knew what you are going to encounter after death, you would not eat food out of desire, nor drink beverages out of desire, nor would you enter a house where you find shade; instead, you would go out to the open space, beating your chests, and weeping over yourselves.'
وَلَوَدِدْتُAnd I would wishأَنِّيthat Iشَجَرَةٌa treeتُعْضَدُis cutثُمَّthenتُؤْكَلُis eaten
And I would wish that I were a tree that is cut down and then eaten.
وَكَانَAnd he wasعَبْدُ اللهِAbdullahابْنَthe son ofعَبَّاسٍAbbasأَسْفَلَunderعَيْنَيْهِhis eyesمِثْلَlikeالشَّرَاكِthe frayedالْبَالِيِold
And Abdullah ibn Abbas had under his eyes like old frayed shoelaces from tears.
وَكَانَAnd he wasأَبُوAbuذَرٍّDharrيَقُولُsayingيَا لَيْتَنِيI wish I wereكُنتُI wasشَجَرَةًa treeتُعْضَدُis cut downوَوَدِدْتُand I would wishأَنْthatيَIلَمْdid notأُخْلَقْcreate
And Abu Dharr was saying: 'I wish I were a tree that is cut down, and I would wish that I had not been created.'
وَعُرِضَتْAnd he was offeredعَلَيْهِto himالنَّفَقَةُthe expenseفَقَالَhe saidعِندَنَاwe haveعَنْزٌa goatنَحْلُبُهَاwe milkوَأَحْمِرَةٌand donkeysنَنْقِلُwe use for transportعَلَيْهَاon itوَمُحَرَّرٌand a freed manيَخْدُمُنَاserves usوَفَضْلٌand an excessعِبَاءَةٍof cloakوَإِنِّيand I fearأَخَافُI fearالْحِسَابَthe reckoning
And he was offered an expense and he said: 'We have a goat to milk, and donkeys to use for transport, and a freed man who serves us, and an excess of a cloak, and I fear the reckoning.'
أَخْرَجَهُNarratedأَحْمَدُAhmadفِيinالزُّهْدِasceticismوَأَبُوand AbuنَعِيمٍNaimفِيinالْحِلَىthe ornamentsالْجَرْحِthe criticismوَالتَّدْلِيلِand the verification
Narrated Ahmad in asceticism and Abu Naim in the ornaments.
أَخْرَجَهُwas narratedعَبْدُ اللهِAbdullahابْنَthe son ofأَحْمَدَAhmadفِيinزَوَائِدِthe supplementsالزُّهْدِasceticism
It was narrated by Abdullah son of Ahmad in the supplements of asceticism.
