فِيهاin itوَقَرَأَand readتَمِيمٌTamimالدَّارِيُّthe Daryلَيْلَةًone nightسُورَةٌchapterالْجَاثِيَةُ،Al-Jathiya,فَلَمَّاso whenأَتَىhe reachedعَلَىtoهَذِهِthisالْآيَةَverseأَمْdidحَسِبَthinkالَّذِينَthose whoاجْتَرَحُواcommittedالسَّيِّئَاتِevilsأَنْthatتَجْعَلَهُمْyou make themكَالَّذِينَlike those whoءَامَنُواbelievedوَعَمِلُواand didالصَّالِحَاتِgood deedsجَعَلَhe keptيُرَدِّدُهَاrepeating itوَيَبْكِيand cryingحَتَّىuntilأَصْبَحَmorning
In it, Tamim Al-Dari read the chapter of Al-Jathiya one night, and when he reached this verse: 'Did those who committed evils think that We would make them like those who believed and did good deeds?' he kept repeating it and crying until morning.
وَقَالَAnd saidأَبُوAbuعُبَيْدَةُUbaidahبِنْbinالْجَرَّاحِAl-JarrahوَدِدتُّI wishedأَنِّيthat Iكَبْشٌ،a ram,فَذَبحُونِيso they slaughtered meأَهْلِي،my family,وَأَكَلُواand ateلَحْمِي،my flesh,وَحَسُواand drankمَرَقِيٍّmy brothوَهَذَاand thisبَابٌis a doorيَطُولُlongتَتَّبِعُهُ.to follow.
And Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah said: 'I wished that I were a ram, so that my family would slaughter me, eat my flesh, and drink my broth. And this is a topic that can be lengthy to follow.
قَالَHe saidالْبُخَارِيُّAl-Bukhariفِيinصَحِيحِهِ :his Sahih:بَابٌChapterخَوْفِof fearالْمُؤْمِنِthe believerمِنْfromأَنْthatيُحْبِطَhis deeds are nullifiedعَمَلَهُhis workوَهُوَwhile heلَاdoes notيَشْعُرُ.realize.
Al-Bukhari said in his Sahih: 'Chapter of the believer's fear that his deeds may be nullified while he does not realize it.'
وَقَالَAnd saidإِبْرَاهِيمُIbrahimالتَّيْمِيُّ :Al-Taimi:مَاI did notعَرَضْتُpresent myقَوْلِيstatementعَلَىtoعَمَلِيmy actionsإِلَّاexceptخَشِيتُI fearedأَنْthatأَكُونَI might beمُكَذَّبًاdenied.
And Ibrahim Al-Taimi said: 'I have never presented my statement to my actions except that I feared I might be denied.'
وَقَالَAnd saidابْنُIbnأَبِيAbuمُلَيْكَةَ :Mulaika:أَدْرَكْتُI metثَلاَثِينَthirtyمِنْofأَصْحَابِthe companionsالنَّبِيِّof the Prophetاللَّهُمَّmay Allahيَخَافُbe afraidالنِّفَاقَof hypocrisyعَلَىonنَفْسِهِ،themselves,مَاthere was notمِنْهُمْamong themأَحَدٌanyone.
And Ibn Abu Mulaika said: 'I met thirty of the companions of the Prophet, may Allah be pleased with them, who feared hypocrisy for themselves, and among them there was not a single one who said...'
أَخْرَجَهُNarrated byأَحْمَدُAhmadفِيinالزُّهْدِZuhdوَأَبُوand AbuنُعَيْمٍNuaymفِيinالْحِلَىHaleyوَفِيهِand in itأَبُوAbuشُعْبَةَShubahالْبَكْرِيِّ،al-Bakri,لَمdid notأَقِفْfindعَلَيْهِ.it.
Narrated by Ahmad in his book of Zuhd and Abu Nuaym in Haleya, and in it is Abu Shubah al-Bakri, I did not find him.
أَخْرَجَهُreported byابْنُIbnالْمُبَارَكِAl-MubarakفِيinالزُّهْدِZuhdوَوَكِيعٌand WakiفِيinالزُّهْدِZuhdوَأَبُوand AbuدَاوُدَDawoodفِيinالزُّهْدِZuhdوَغَيْرِهِمand others fromطَرِيقِthe routeمَسْرُوقٍMasrouqقَالَ :said:قَالَsaidلِيto meرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofمَكَةَ:Makkah:هَذَاthisمَقَامٌpositionأَخَيكَof your brotherتَمِيمٌTamimالدَّارِيِّthe Daryقَامَstoodلَيْلَةًa nightحَتَّىuntilأَصْبَحَ -morning -أَوْorكَرَبَanxietyأَنْtoيُصْبِحَ -morning -بِآيَةٍwith a verseمِنَfromالْقُرْآنِthe Quranيُرَدِّدُهَاhe keeps repeating itيَبْكِيcryingفَيَرْكَعُand he prostratesبِهَاwith itوَيَسْجُدُand he bowsثُمَّthenذَكَرَhe mentionedالْآيَةَ.the verse.
Narrated by Ibn Al-Mubarak in his book of Zuhd, and Waki in Zuhd, and Abu Dawood in Zuhd, and others via the route of Masrouq who said: A man from the people of Makkah said to me: 'This is the place of your brother Tamim Al-Dari who stood one night until morning — or was anxious to see the morning — repeating a verse from the Quran while crying, and he would prostrate with it and bow, then he mentioned the verse.
وَسَنْدُهُAnd its chainصَحِيحٌis authenticإِلَىtoمَسْرُوقٍ.Masrouq.
And its chain is authentic to Masrouq.
أَخْرَجَهُReported byأَحْمَدُAhmadفِيinالزُّهْدِZuhdقَتَادَةُQatadaلَمdid notيُدْرِكْmeetأَبَاAbuعُبَيْدَةَ.Ubaidah.
Reported by Ahmad in his book of Zuhd. Qatada did not meet Abu Ubaidah.

Reported by Al-Bukhari in his history and Ahmad in his Zuhd, and others. And its chain is authentic.
