The life of the lonely and the fearful is harsh, while the best life is that of the sociable.

فَلَوْThen ifنَظَرَthe rational person looksالْعَاقِلُthe wiseوَوَازَنَand weighsبَيْنَbetweenلَذَّةَthe pleasureالمَعْصِيَةِof sinوَمَاand whatتُوَقِّعُهُit causesمِنْofالْخَوْفِfearوَالْوَحْشَةِand lonelinessلَعَلِمَhe would knowسُوءَthe badnessحَالَهَاof his conditionوَعَظِيمَand the greatغَبْنِهَاloss he suffersإِذْas he hasبَاعَtradedأُنْسَthe comfortالطَّاعَةِof obedienceوَأَمْنِهَاand its safetyوَحَلَاوَتِهَاand its sweetnessبِوَحْشَةٍwith the lonelinessالمَعْصِيَةِof sinوَمَاand whatتُوجِّبُهُit necessitatesمِنْofالْخَوْفِfear

If a rational person were to look and weigh between the pleasure of sin and the fear and loneliness it causes, he would know the badness of his condition and the great loss he suffers, as he has traded the comfort of obedience and its safety and sweetness for the loneliness of sin and what it necessitates of fear.

فَإِنْSo ifكُنتَyou areقَدْindeedأَوْحَشَتْكَmade you lonelyالذُّنُوبُthe sinsفَدَعْهَاthen leave themإِذَاifشِئْتَyou wishوَاسْتَأْنِسْand be sociable

So if your sins have made you lonely, then leave them if you wish and be sociable.

وَسِرُّAnd the secretالْمَسْأَلَةِof the matterأَنْis thatالطَّاعَةَobedienceتُوَجِّبُbrings aboutالْقُرْبَclosenessمِنْtoالرَّبِّthe Lordوَكُلَّمَاand wheneverاشْتَدَّthe closeness intensifiesالْقُرْبُthe proximityقَوِيَstrengthensالأُنْسُthe comfortوَالْمَعْصِيَةُand sinتُوَجِّبُbrings aboutالْبُعْدَdistanceمِنْfromالرَّبِّthe Lordوَكُلَّمَاand wheneverازْدَادَthe distance increasesالْبُعْدُthe distanceقَوِيَتْthe loneliness intensifies

And the secret of the matter is that obedience brings about closeness to the Lord, and whenever the closeness intensifies, the comfort strengthens; while sin brings about distance from the Lord, and whenever the distance increases, the loneliness intensifies.

وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonيَجِدُone findsالْعَبْدَthe servantوَحْشَةًlonelinessبَيْنَهُbetween himوَبَيْنَand betweenعَدُوهُhis enemyلِلبُعْدِdue to the distanceالَّذِيthat whichبَيْنَهُمَاis between themوَإِنْand ifكَانَhe isمُلَابِسًاassociatingلَهُwith himقَرِيبًاcloseمِنْهُto him

And for this reason, one finds loneliness between him and his enemy due to the distance that is between them, even if he is associating closely with him.

وَيَجِدُAnd he findsأُنْسًاcomfortوَقُرْبًاand closenessبَيْنَهُbetween himوَبَيْنَand betweenمَنْwhomيُحِبُّhe lovesوَإِنْand ifكَانَhe isبَعِيدًاfarعَنْهُfrom him

And he finds comfort and closeness between him and the one he loves, even if he is far from him.

وَالْوَحْشَةُAnd lonelinessسَبَبُهَاis caused byالْحِجَابِthe veilوَكُلَّمَاand wheneverغَلُظَit thickensالْحِجَابُthe veilزَادَتْincreasesالْوَحْشَةُthe loneliness

And loneliness is caused by the veil; and whenever the veil thickens, the loneliness increases.

فَالغَفْلَةُSo negligenceتُوَجِّبُbrings aboutالْوَحْشَةَlonelinessوَأَشَدُّand greaterمِنْهَاthan itوَحْشَةٌlonelinessالمَعْصِيَةُof sinوَأَشَدُّand greaterمِنْهَاthan itوَحْشَةٌlonelinessالشِّرْكُof polytheismوَالكُفْرُand disbeliefوَلَاAnd notتَجِدُyou findأَحَدًاanyoneيُلَابِسُ شَيْئًاdealing with somethingمِنْ ذَٰلِكَof thatإِلَّاexceptوَيَعْلُوهُand it is upon himمِنَfromالْوَحْشَةِlonelinessبِحَسَبِaccording toمَاwhatلَابِسُهُhe is dealing withمِنْهَاof it

So negligence brings about loneliness and greater than it is the loneliness of sin, and greater than it is the loneliness of polytheism and disbelief. And you will not find anyone dealing with something of that except that it is upon him from loneliness according to what he is dealing with of it.

فَتَعْلُوSo it risesالْوَحْشَةُlonelinessوَجْهَهُupon his faceوَقَلْبَهُand his heartفَيَسْتَوْحِشُhe becomes lonelyوَيُسْتَوْحَشُand he is made lonelyمِنْهُfrom it

So loneliness rises upon his face and his heart, he becomes lonely and he is made lonely from it.
