The women, and if among you are those who lag behind, then if a calamity befalls you, he will say: 'Indeed Allah has bestowed favor upon me when I was not with them as a witness.' And if a favor befalls you from Allah, they will say: 'As if there was no affection between you and him. Oh, if only I had been with them, then I would have won a great victory.' Indeed, those who are lagging behind do not love for their brothers the believers what they love for themselves. Rather, if a calamity befalls them, they rejoice in their exclusivity, and if a blessing befalls them, they do not rejoice for them but rather they love to have a share from it. They do not rejoice except with worldly gains obtained for them or with worldly evils that befall them, as they do not love Allah and His Messenger and the Hereafter. And if they were like that, they would have loved their brothers and loved what came to them from His favor, and they would have been pained by what afflicted them from calamity. And whoever does not like what pleases the believers and is saddened by what saddens the believers is not one of them. In the authentic books, al-Amr al-Shabi said: I heard Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir giving a sermon and saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: 'The believers are like a structure that supports one another, interlocking between their fingers.' And greed is a disease, and stinginess is a disease, and envy is worse than stinginess, as mentioned in the narration that Abu Dawood reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said: 'Envy eats the good deeds as fire eats wood, and charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.' And that is because the miser prevents himself and the envious hates Allah's blessing on His servants. And there can be in a man giving to someone who aids him in his objectives and animosity toward his peers, and there can be in him stinginess without envy for others. And greed is the root of that. Allah the Exalted said in Al-Hashr and Al-Taghabun: 'And whoever is protected from the greed of their soul, it is they who will be successful.' And in the authentic books, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Beware of greed, for it destroyed those who were before you. He commanded them to be stingy, and they were stingy. He commanded them to be unjust, and they were unjust. He commanded them to sever ties, and they severed them.' Abdullah ibn Awf used to frequently supplicate during his circumambulation, saying: 'O Allah, protect me from the greed of my soul.' A man said to him: 'Why do you invoke this abundantly?' He replied: 'If I am protected from the greed of my soul, I am protected from greed, injustice, severing ties, and envy that leads to injustice. So, indeed, stinginess and envy are diseases that cause hatred of the self for what benefits it and love for what harms it. And for this reason, envy is associated with malice and wrath. And as for the disease of desire and passion, it is the love of the self.
