As long as he sees it as good because the first of repentance is the knowledge that his action is bad for him to repent from it, or that he has left what is good that he is commanded with, whether it is a matter of obligation or a matter of recommendation, so he will repent and do it. So as long as he sees his action as good, and it is bad in the very matter, then he will not repent. But repentance is possible and its occurrence is that God guides him and shows him until the truth becomes clear to him just as He guided those who were guided from the disbelievers and the hypocrites and groups of people of innovation and misguidance. This occurs by following what he knows of the truth. So whoever acts upon what he knows, God will grant him knowledge of what he does not know as He said: "And Muhammad and those who were guided, He increased them in guidance and gave them their righteousness." And He said: "And if they had done what they were advised, it would have been better for them and more firmly establishing, and We would have certainly given them from Us a great reward and would have guided them to a straight path." And He said: "O you who believe, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger. He will give you two shares of His mercy and will make for you a light by which you will walk." And He said: "God is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from the darkness to the light." And He said: "There has certainly come to you from God light and a clear Book, with which Allah guides whoever follows His pleasure to the paths of peace." The verses and evidence of this are many in the Book and the Sunnah, and similarly, whoever turns away from following the truth which he knows following his desires, for indeed that leads him to ignorance and misguidance until his heart becomes blind to the clear truth. As He said: "And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate." And He said: "In their hearts is a disease, so Allah increased them in disease." And He said: "And they swore by Allah their most strenuous oaths that if a sign came to them, they would surely believe in it. Say: "Indeed, the signs are with Allah, and what makes you know that when it comes, they will not believe?" And We will turn their hearts and their eyes." The verse. And this questioning implies denial and negation, meaning what makes you know that when it comes, they will not believe? And indeed, We will turn their hearts and their eyes as they did not believe in Him the first time. For this reason, it is said by some of the predecessors like Said bin Jubair: "Indeed, from the reward of the good deed is the good deed after it, and indeed from the punishment of the bad deed is the bad deed after it." And it has been established in the two Sahihs from Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said: "You should be truthful, for indeed truthfulness leads to righteousness, and indeed righteousness leads to paradise. And a man continues to tell the truth and strives to be truthful until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful one. And beware of lying, for indeed lying leads to wickedness, and indeed wickedness leads to Hell. And a man continues to lie and strives to lie until he is recorded with Allah as a liar".
