وُجُوهُكُمYour facesقَبْلَbeforeالْمَشْرِقِthe Eastوَandالْمَغْرِبِthe Westوَلَكِنَbutالبرُّthe righteousمِنْis one whoآمَنَbelievesبِاللَّهِin Godوَandالْيَوْمِthe Dayالْآخِرِof Judgmentوَandالْمَلَائِكَةِthe Angelsوَandالْكِتَابِthe Bookوَالنَّبِيِّيْنَand the Prophets
Your faces are before the East and the West, but righteousness is in the one who believes in God, the Day of Judgment, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets.
إِلَىtoقَوْلِهِHis sayingأُولَئِكَThoseالَّذِينَwhoصَدَقُواhave believedوَandأُولَئِكَthoseهُمْthey areالْمُتَّقُونَthe pious
To His saying, 'Those who have believed, they are the pious.'
وَAndأَمَّاas forالْمُنَافِقُونَthe hypocritesفَوَصَفَهُمْHe describes themبِالْكَذِبِas liarsفِيinآيَاتٍversesمُتَعَدِّدَةٍmultipleكَمَاsuch asقَوْلِهِHis sayingالْبَقَرَةِin Al-Baqarahفِيthat inقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsمَرَضٌis a diseaseفَزَادَهُمُSo God increased themاللَّهُGodمَرَضًاin diseaseوَلَهُمْand for themعَذَابٌis punishmentأَلِيمٌpainfulبِمَاbecause of whatكَانُواthey used toيَكْذِبُونَlie
As for the hypocrites, He describes them as liars in multiple verses such as His saying in Al-Baqarah, 'In their hearts is a disease, so God has increased them in disease. And for them is a painful punishment because they used to lie.'
وَقَوْلُهُAnd His sayingأَوَّلَthe firstالْمُنَافِقِينَhypocritesإِذَاwhenجَاءَكَthey come to youالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocritesقَالُواthey sayنَشْهَدُwe bear witnessإِنَّكَthat youلَرَسُولُare the Messengerاللَّهِof GodوَandاللَّهُGodيَعْلَمُknowsإِنَّكَthat youلَرَسُولُهُare His MessengerوَandاللَّهُGodيَشْهَدُbears witnessإِنَّthat indeedالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocritesلَكَاذِبُونَare liars.
And His saying about the first hypocrites, 'When they come to you, they say, "We bear witness that you are the Messenger of God," and God knows that you are His Messenger, and God bears witness that indeed the hypocrites are liars.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidالتَّوْبَةِin At-TawbahفَأَعْقَبَهُمSo He made them followنِفَاقًاhypocrisyفِيinقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsإِلَىuntilيَوْمِthe dayيَلْقَوْنَهُthey meet Himبِمَاfor whatأَخْلَفُواthey brokeاللَّهُGod'sمَاwhatوَعَدَهُمْHe promised themوَandبِمَاfor whatكَانُواthey used toيَكْذِبُونَlie.
And He said in At-Tawbah, 'So He made them follow hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they meet Him for what they broke God's promise and for what they used to lie.'
وَAndنَحْوَsimilar toذَلِكَthatمِنَfromالْقُرْآنِthe Quranكَثِيرٌmany.
And similar to that is found in the Quran many times.
وَمِمَّاAnd from whatيَنْبَغِيshould be knownأَنْthatالصِّدْقَtruthfulnessوَالْتَّصْدِيقَand beliefيَكُونَis to beفِيinالأَقْوَالِstatementsوَالْأَعْمَالِand actionsكَasقَوْلِthe saying ofالنَّبِيِّthe Prophet(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ)(peace be upon him)فِيinالْحَدِيثِthe hadithالصَّحِيحِthe authenticكَتَبَHe wroteعَلَىuponابْنِthe son ofآدَمَAdamحَظَّهُhis shareمِنَofالزِّنَاzina (fornication)
And from what should be known is that truthfulness and belief is in statements and actions, as the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the authentic hadith, he wrote upon the son of Adam his share of zina.
فَهُوَSo it isمُدْرَكٌknownذَلِكَthatلَاnotمُحَالَةٌinevitably.
So it is known that inevitably.
فَالعَيْنَانِThe two eyesتَزْنِيَانِcommit fornicationوَزِنَاهُمَاand their fornicationالنَّظَرُis the glance.وَAndالأُذُنَانِthe two earsتَزْنِيَانِcommit fornicationوَزِنَاهُمَاand their fornicationالسَّمْعُis listening.وَAndالْيَدَانِthe two handsتَزْنِيَانِcommit fornicationوَزِنَاهُمَاand their fornicationالْبَطْشُis to strike.وَAndالرَّجُلَانِthe two feetتَزْنِيَانِcommit fornicationوَزِنَاهُمَاand their fornicationالْمَشْيُis to walk.وَAndالْقَلْبُthe heartيَتَمَنَّىdesiresوَيَشْتَهِيand craves.وَالْفَرْجُAnd the private partيُصَدِّقُconfirmsذَلِكَthatوَيُكَذِّبُهُand negates it.
The two eyes commit fornication, and their fornication is the glance. And the two ears commit fornication, and their fornication is listening. And the two hands commit fornication, and their fornication is to strike. And the two feet commit fornication, and their fornication is to walk. And the heart desires and craves, and the private part confirms that and negates it.
وْيُقَالُAnd it is saidحَمَلُواthey carriedعَلَىagainstالْعَدُوِّthe enemyحَمْلَةٌa chargeصَادِقَةٌtrueإِذَاwhenكَانَتْwasإِرَادَتُهُمْtheir willالْقِتَالَthe fightثَابِتَةًfirmصَادِقَةًtrue.
And it is said that they carried against the enemy a true charge when their will for the fight was firm.
وْيُقَالُAnd it is saidفُلَانٌso-and-soصَادِقٌis truthfulفِيinالْمَحَبَّةِloveوَالْمَوَدَّةِand affection.وَAndنَحْوَsimilar toذَلِكَthat.
And it is said so-and-so is truthful in love and affection, and similar to that.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisيُرَادُis meantبِالصَّادِقِby truthfulالصَّادِقُthe one who is truthfulفِيinإِرَادَتِهِhis intentionوَقَصْدِهِand aim.وَAndطَلَبِهِdesire.وَهُوَAnd he isالصَّادِقُthe truthfulفِيinعَمَلِهِhis work.وَيُرِيدُونَAnd they meanالصَّادِقَthe truthfulفِيinخَبَرِهِhis newsوَكَلَامِهِand his speech.
And for this, the meaning of truthful is the one who is truthful in his intention, aim, and desire, and he is truthful in his work. And they mean the truthful in his news and speech.
وَالْمُنَافِقُAnd the hypocriteضِدُّis the opposite ofالْمُؤْمِنِthe believerالصَّادِقُthe truthful.وَهُوَAnd he isالَّذِيthe one whoيَكُونُisكَاذِبًاa liarفِيinخَبَرِهِhis newsأَوْorكَاذِبًاa liarفِيinعَمَلِهِhis workكَالْمُرَائِيlike the show-offفِيinعَمَلِهِhis work.
And the hypocrite is the opposite of the truthful believer. And he is the one who is a liar in his news or a liar in his work, like the show-off in his work.
قَالَHe saidاللَّهُGodتَعَالَىthe Exaltedالنِّسَاءِin An-NisaإِنَّIndeedالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocritesيُخَادِعُونَdeceiveاللَّهَGodوَهُوَand He isخَادِعُهُمْdeceiving them.وَإِذَاAnd whenقَامُواthey standإِلَىforالصَّلَاةِthe prayerقَامُواthey standكَسَالَىlazilyيُرَاؤُونَto show offالنَّاسَthe people.الْآيَتَيْنِthe two Ayahs.
He said God the Exalted in An-Nisa, 'Indeed the hypocrites deceive God, and He is deceiving them. And when they stand for the prayer, they stand lazily to show off to the people, the two Ayahs.'
وَأَمَّاAnd as forالْإِخْلَاصِsincerityفَهُوَit isحَقِيقَةٌthe essenceالإِسْلَامِof Islam.إِذِAsالإِسْلَامُIslamهُوَisالِاسْتِسْلَامُsubmissionلِلَّهِto Godلَاnotلِغَيْرِهِto anyone else.
And as for sincerity, it is the essence of Islam, as Islam is submission to God, not to anyone else.
كَمَاAsقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Exaltedالزُّمَرِin Az-Zumarضَرَبَgives an exampleاللَّهُGodمَثَلًاof a manرَجُلًاwho is a manفِيهِwho hasشُّرَكَاءَpartnersمُتَشَاكِسُونَthat argueوَرَجُلًاand a manسَلِمًاwho is submittedلِرَجُلٍto a man.هَلWillيَسْتَوِيَانِthey be equal?الْآيَةَthe verse.
As He said the Exalted in Az-Zumar, 'God gives the example of a man with discordant partners and a man who is submitted to a man: will they be equal?'
