إِنْIfأَعْطَيْتَهُyou gave himشَكَرَhe was grateful

If you gave him, he was grateful;

وَإِنْand ifمَنَعْتَهُyou withheld from himصَبَرَhe was patient.

and if you withheld from him, he was patient.

قَالَSaidعُمَرُUmar:نِعْمَWhat an excellentالصَّاحِبُcompanion

Umar said: What an excellent companion,

فَاسْتَمْسِكْso hold fastبِهِto him.

so hold fast to him.

وَرَأَىAnd sawابْنُIbnعُمَرَUmarرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُhim

Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, saw

مَعَwithأَعْرَابِيٍّa Bedouinكَلْبًاa dog,

a dog with a Bedouin,

فَقَالَand he saidلَهُto him:مَاWhatهَذَاis thisمَعَكَwith you?

and said to him: What is this with you?

قَالَHe said:مَنْHe whoيَشْكُرُنِيthanks meوَيَكْتُمُand concealsسِرِّيmy secret.

He said: One who thanks me and conceals my secret.

قَالَHe said:فَاحْتَفِظْSo keepبِصَاحِبِكَyour companion.

He said: So keep your companion.

قَالَSaidالْأَحْنَفُAl-Ahnafبْنُson ofقَيْسٍQays:

Al-Ahnaf ibn Qays said:

إِذَاWhenبَصْبَصَwagged its tailالْكَلْبُthe dogلَكَat you,

When the dog wags its tail at you,

فَثِقْthen trustبِوُدٍّin affectionمِنْهُfrom it,

then trust in affection from it,

وَلَاand do notتَثِقْtrustبِبَصَابِصِin the tail-waggingالنَّاسِof people,

and do not trust the tail-wagging of people,

فَرُبَّfor many aمُبَصْبِصٍtail-waggerخَوَّانٌis treacherous.

for many a tail-wagger is treacherous.

قَالَSaidالشَّعْبِيُّAl-Sha'bi:

Al-Sha'bi said:

خَيْرُThe bestخَصْلَةٍtraitفِيinالْكَلْبِthe dog

The best trait in the dog

أَنَّهُis that itلَاdoes notيُنَافِقُhypocritically feignفِيinمَحَبَّتِهِits love.

is that it does not hypocritically feign in its love.

وَقَالَAnd saidابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbasرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُمَاthem both:

And Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said:

كَلْبٌA dogأَمِينٌfaithful

A faithful dog

خَيْرٌis betterمِنْthanإِنْسَانٍa humanخَؤُونٍtreacherous.

is better than a treacherous human.

Al-Qasim ibn Muhammad Al-Rasdi narrated to us:

حَدَّثَنَاNarrated to usمُحْرِزُMuhrizبْنُson ofعَوْنٍAwn

Muhriz ibn Awn narrated to us

عَنْfromرَجُلٍa manعَنْfromجَعْفَرِJa'farبْنِson ofسُلَيْمَانَSulayman,

from a man, from Ja'far ibn Sulayman, who said:

قَالَHe said:رَأَيْتُI sawمَالِكَMalikبْنَson ofدِينَارٍDinar

I saw Malik ibn Dinar

وَمَعَهُand with himكَلْبٌwas a dog.

and with him was a dog.

فَقُلْتُSo I said:مَاWhatهَذَاis this?

So I said: What is this?

هَذَاThisخَيْرٌis betterمِنْthanجَلِيسِthe companionالسُّوءِof evil.

This is better than the companion of evil.

أَخْبَرَنَاInformed usأَبُوAbuعُمَرَUmarابْنُson ofخَيْرَةَKhayrah:

Abu Umar ibn Khayrah informed us:

حَدَّثَنَاNarrated to usأَبُوAbuالْقَاسِمِAl-Qasimابْنُson ofبِنْتِdaughter ofمَنِيعٍMani'

Abu Al-Qasim ibn Bint Mani' narrated to us:

حَدَّثَنَاNarrated to usمُحْرِزُMuhrizبْنُson ofعَوْنٍAwnبِهَذَاwith thisالْحَدِيثِhadith.

Muhriz ibn Awn narrated to us with this hadith.

حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meابْنُIbnأَبِيAbiطَاهِرٍTahir:

Ibn Abi Tahir narrated to me:

حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meحَمَّادُHammadبْنُson ofإِسْحَاقَIshaqبْنِson ofإِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahimالْمَوْصِلِيُّAl-Mawsiliقَالَwho said:

Hammad ibn Ishaq ibn Ibrahim Al-Mawsili narrated to me, saying:

قَالَHe saidأَبِيmy father:

My father said:

أَتَيْتُI cameيَوْمًاone dayالْفَضْلَto Al-Fadlبْنَson ofيَحْيَىYahya,

I came one day to Al-Fadl ibn Yahya,

فَصَادَفْتُهُand I found himيَشْرَبُdrinkingوَبَيْنَand beforeيَدَيْهِhimكَلْبٌwas a dog.

and I found him drinking with a dog before him.

فَقُلْتُSo I saidلَهُto him:أَتُنَادِمُDo you make a drinking companionكَلْبًاof a dog?

So I said to him: Do you take a dog as a drinking companion?

قَالَHe said:نَعَمْYes,يَمْنَعُنِيit wards off from meأَذَاهُits harm

He said: Yes, it wards off its harm from me,

وَيَكُفُّand restrainsعَنِّيfrom meأَذَىthe harmسِوَاهُof others,

and restrains from me the harm of others,

وَيَشْكُرُand it is grateful forقَلِيلِيmy littleوَيَحْرُسُand guards

and it is grateful for my little, and guards
