مَبِيتِيWhere I spent the nightوَمَقِيلِي.and where I spent the midday rest.

Where I spent my night and where I spent my midday rest.

أَنْشَدَنِيRecited to meالْحَسَنُAl-Hasanبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdالْوَهَّابِAl-Wahhabلِرَجُلٍfor a manيَذُّمُّwho condemnsصَدِيقاًa friendلَهُof hisوَيَمْدَحُand praisesكَلْباًa dogوَافِرٍ:in full meter:

Al-Hasan bin Abd Al-Wahhab recited to me regarding a man who condemns a friend of his and praises a dog in full meter:

تَخَيَّرْتُI choseمِنَfromالْأَخْلَاقِmoralsمَاwhatيَفِيoutweighsعَنِoverالْكَلْبِthe dog

I chose from morals what outweighs the dog

فَإِنَّFor indeedالْكَلْبَthe dogمَجْبُولٌis naturally disposedعَلَىtoالنُّصْرَةِsupportوَالذَّبِّand defense

For indeed the dog is naturally disposed to support and defense

وَفِيٌّFaithfulيَحْفَظُit keepsالْعَهْدَاthe covenantوَيَحْمِيand protectsعَرْصَةَthe courtyard ofالدَّرْبِthe path

Faithful, it keeps the covenant and protects the courtyard of the path

وَيُعْطِيكَAnd it gives youعَلَىuponاللِّينِgentlenessوَلَاand does notيُعْطِيgiveعَلَىuponالضَّرْبِbeing beaten

And it gives you upon gentleness and does not give upon being beaten

وَيَشْفِيكَAnd it heals youمِنَfromالْغَيْظِrageوَيُنْجِيكَand saves youمِنَfromالْكَرْبِdistress

And it heals you from rage and saves you from distress

فَلَوْHadأَشْبَهْتَهُyou resembled itلَمْyou would notتَكُhave beenكَانُوناًa fireplaceعَلَىuponالْقَبْthe grave

Had you resembled it, you would not have been a fireplace upon the grave

وَذَكَرَAnd mentionedبَعْضُsomeالرُّوَاةِof the narratorsقَالَsayingكَانَthere wasلِلرَّبِيعِfor Al-Rabi'بْنِbinبَدْرٍBadrكَلْبٌa dogقَدْthat hadرَبَّاهُhe raisedفَلَمَّاso whenمَاتَdiedالرَّبِيعُAl-Rabi'وُدُفِنَand was buriedجَعَلَbeganالْكَلْبُthe dogيَتَرَدَّدُto paceعَلَىuponقَبْرِهِhis graveحَتَّىuntilمَاتَit diedوَدُفِنَand was buried

And some of the narrators mentioned, saying: Al-Rabi' bin Badr had a dog which he had raised, so when Al-Rabi' died and was buried, the dog began to pace upon his grave until it died and was buried.

وَكَانَAnd there wasلِلْعَامِرِfor Al-AmirبْنِbinعَنْتَرَةَAntarahكِلَابُdogs ofصَيْدٍhuntingوَمَاشِيَةٍand livestockوَكَانَand he wasيُحْسِنُtreating wellصُحْبَتَهَاtheir companionshipفَلَمَّاso whenمَاتَdiedعَامِرٌAmirلَزِمَتِclung toالْكِلَابُthe dogsقَبْرَهُhis graveحَتَّىuntilمَاتَتْthey diedعِنْدَهُnear himوَتَفَرَّقَand dispersedعَنْهُfrom himالْأَهْلُthe familyوَالْأَقَارِبُand relatives

And Al-Amir bin Antarah had hunting and livestock dogs, and he used to treat their companionship well, so when Amir died, the dogs clung to his grave until they died near him, while the family and relatives dispersed from him.

وَرَوَىAnd narratedلَنَاto usعَنْfromشَرِيكٍSharikقَالَ:who said:كَانَthere was
