بِمَقْبَرَةٍIn a graveyard

In a graveyard.

فَإِذَاand behold,قَبْرٌa grave

and behold, a grave

عَلَيْهِupon itقُبَّةٌis a domeمَبْنِيَّةٌbuilt

upon it is a built dome

مَكْتُوبٌwrittenعَلَيْهَاupon it

written upon it

هَذَاThisقَبْرُis the grave ofالْكَلْبِthe dog.

This is the grave of the dog.

فَمَنْSo whoeverأَحَبَّlikesأَنْtoيَعْلَمَknowخَبَرَهُits story

So whoever likes to know its story

فَلْيَمْضِlet him goإِلَىtoقَرْيَةِvillageكَذَاsuch andوَكَذَاsuch,

let him go to such and such a village,

فَإِنَّfor indeedفِيهَاin itمَنْis one whoيُخْبِرُهُwill inform him.

for indeed in it is one who will inform him.

فَسَأَلَSo askedالرَّجُلُthe manعَنِaboutالْقَرْيَةِthe village

So the man asked about the village

فَدَلُّوهُand they directed himعَلَيْهَاto it.

and they directed him to it.

فَقَصَدَهَاSo he headed towards itوَسَأَلَand askedأَهْلَهَاits people,

So he headed towards it and asked its people,

فَدَلُّوهُand they directed himعَلَىtoشَيْخٍan old man.

and they directed him to an old man.

فَبَعَثَSo he sentإِلَيْهِto himوَأَحْضَرَهُand brought him.

So he sent to him and brought him.

وَإِذَاAnd beholdشَيْخٌan old manقَدْhasجَاوَزَexceededالْمِائَةَa hundredسَنَةٍyears.

And behold, an old man who had exceeded a hundred years.

فَسَأَلَهُSo he asked himفَقَالَand he said,

So he asked him, and he said,

نَعَمْYes,كَانَthere wasفِيinهَذِهِthisالنَّاحِيَةِregion

Yes, there was in this region

مَلِكٌa kingعَظِيمُof greatالشَّأْنِstatus,

a king of great status,

وَكَانَand he wasمَشْهُوراًfamousبِالنُّزْهَةِfor excursionsوَالصَّيْدِand huntingوَالسَّفَرِand travel.

and he was famous for excursions, hunting, and travel.

وَكَانَAnd he hadلَهُfor himكَلْبٌa dogقَدْwhich he hadرَبَّاهُraisedوَسَمَّاهُand namedبِاسْمٍwith a name,

And he had a dog which he had raised and given a name,

وَكَانَand it wasلَاnotيُفَارِقُهُleaving himحَيْثُwhereverكَانَhe was.

and it would not leave him wherever he was.

فَإِذَاAnd whenكَانَit wasوَقْتُthe time ofغِذَائِهِhis lunchوَعِشَائِهِand his dinner,

And when it was the time of his lunch and dinner,

أَطْعَمَهُhe fed itمِمَّاfrom whatيَأْكُلُhe eats.

he fed it from what he eats.

فَخَرَجَSo went outيَوْماًone dayإِلَىtoبَعْضِsomeمُنْتَزَهَاتِهِof his pleasure grounds

So he went out one day to some of his pleasure grounds

وَقَالَand saidلِبَعْضِto someغِلْمَانِهِof his pages,

and said to some of his pages,

قُلْTellلِلطَّبَّاخِthe cookيُصْلِحْto prepareلَنَاfor usثَرِيدَةَthareed ofلَبَنٍmilk,

Tell the cook to prepare for us milk thareed,

فَقَدِfor indeedاشْتَهَيْتُهَاI have desired it.

for indeed I have desired it.

فَأَصْلَحُوهَاSo they prepared itوَمَضَىand he wentإِلَىtoمُنْتَزَهَاتِهِhis pleasure grounds.

So they prepared it and he went to his pleasure grounds.

فَوَجَّهَSo directedالطَّبَّاخُthe cookفَجَاءَand broughtبِلَبَنٍmilkوَصَنَعَand madeلَهُfor himثَرِيدَةًa thareedعَظِيمَةًgreat in size,

So the cook proceeded and brought milk and made for him a great thareed,

وَنَسِيَand he forgotأَنْtoيُغَطِّيَهَاcover itبِشَيْءٍwith anything

and he forgot to cover it with anything

وَاشْتَغَلَand he was busyبِطَبْخِcookingشَيْءٍsomethingآخَرَelse.

and he was busy cooking something else.

فَخَرَجَThen came outمِنْfromبَعْضِsomeشَفُوقِcrevices ofالْغِيطَانِthe fields

Then there came out from some crevices of the fields

أَفْعَىa viperفَكَرَعَتْand it lappedمِنْfromذَلِكَthatاللَّبَنِmilk

a viper and it lapped from that milk

وَمَجَّتْand spatفِيintoالثَّرِيدَةِthe thareedمِنْfromسُمِّهَاits venom.

and spat its venom into the thareed.

وَالْكَلْبُAnd the dogرَابِضٌwas crouchingيَرَىseeingذَلِكَthatكُلَّهُall of it.

And the dog was crouching, seeing all of that.

وَلَوْAnd ifكَانَthere had beenلَهُfor itفِيregardingالْأَفْعَىthe viperحِيلَةٌany means

And if it had any means against the viper

لَمَنَعَهَاit would have prevented it,

it would have prevented it,

وَلَكِنْbutلَاnoحِيلَةَmeansلِلْكَلْبِfor the dogفِيagainstالْأَفْعَىthe viperوَالْحَيَّةِand the snake.

but the dog has no means against the viper and the snake.

وَكَانَAnd there wasعِنْدَwithالْمَلِكِthe kingجَارِيَةٌa slave girlخَرْسَاءُmuteزَمَنَاchronic

And the king had a chronically mute slave girl

قَدْwhoرَأَتْsawمَاwhatصَنَعَتِdidالْأَفْعَىthe viper.

who had seen what the viper did.

وَوَافَىAnd arrivedالْمَلِكُthe kingمِنَfromالصَّيْدِhuntingفِيinآخِرِthe end ofالنَّهَارِthe day.

And the king arrived from hunting at the end of the day.

فَقَالَSo he said,يَاOغِلْمَانُpages,

So he said, O pages,

أَوَّلُfirstمَاwhatتَقْدُمُونَyou bring forwardإِلَىtoالثَّرِيدَةِthe thareed.

the first thing you present is the thareed.

فَأَوْمَأَتِSo gesturedالْخَرْسَاءُthe mute girlإِلَيْهِمْto them,

So the mute girl gestured to them,

فَلَمْbut they didيَفْهَمُواnot understandمَاwhatتَقُولُshe was saying.

but they did not understand what she was saying.

وَنَبَحَAnd barkedالْكَلْبُthe dog.

And the dog barked.
