وَصَاحَAnd he cried out

And he cried out

فَلَمْso they did notيَلْتَفِتُواturnإِلَيْهِto him

so they did not turn to him

وَأَلَحَّand he persistedفِيinالصِّيَاحِcrying out

and he persisted in crying out

لِيُعْلِمَهُمْto make them knowمُرَادَهُhis intentفِيهِtherein

to make them know his intent therein

ثُمَّThenرَمَىhe threwإِلَيْهِto him

Then he threw to him

بِمَاwith whatكَانَwasيُرْمَىthrownإِلَيْهِto him

with what was thrown to him

فَلَمْand he did notيَقْرَبْهُapproach it

and he did not approach it

وَلَجَّand he persistedفِيinالصِّيَاحِcrying out

and he persisted in crying out

فَقَالَso he saidلِغِلْمَانِهِto his servants

so he said to his servants

نَحُّوهُRemove himعَنَّاfrom us

Remove him from us

فَإِنَّfor indeedلَهُhe hasقِصَّةًa story

for indeed he has a story

وَمَدَّAnd he extendedيَدَهُhis handإِلَىtoاللَّبَنِthe milk

And he extended his hand to the milk

فَلَمَّاAnd whenرَآهُhe saw himالْكَلْبُthe dog

And when the dog saw him

يُرِيدُintendingأَنْtoيَأْكُلَeat

intending to eat

وَثَبَhe leapedإِلَىtoوَسَطِthe middle ofالْمَائِدَةِthe table

he leaped to the middle of the table

وَأَدْخَلَand insertedفَمَهُhis mouthفِيinاللَّبَنِthe milk

and inserted his mouth in the milk

وَكَرَعَand drank directlyمِنْهُfrom it

and drank directly from it

فَسَقَطَso he fellمَيِّتاًdead

so he fell dead

وَتَنَاثَرَand scatteredلَحْمُهُhis flesh

and his flesh scattered

وَبَقِيَAnd remainedالْمَلِكُthe kingمُتَعَجِّباًastonishedمِنْهُat him

And the king remained astonished at him

وَمِنْand atفِعْلِهِhis deed

and at his deed

فَأَوْمَأَتِso signaledالْخَرْسَاءُthe mute woman

so the mute woman signaled

فَعَرَفُواand they knewمُرَادَهَاher intent

and they knew her intent

بِمَاby whatصَنَعَdidالْكَلْبُthe dog

by what the dog did

فَقَالَSo saidالْمَلِكُthe kingلِنُدَمَائِهِto his companionsوَحَاشِيَتِهِand his entourage

So the king said to his companions and his entourage

أَنَّthatشَيْئاًsomethingقَدْhasفَدَانِيransomed meبِنَفْسِهِwith himself

that something has ransomed me with its life

لِتَحْقِيقِto fulfillالْمُكَافَأَةِthe reward

to fulfill the reward

وَمَاand noneيَحْمِلُهُshall carry himوَيَدْفِنُهُand bury himغَيْرِيexcept me

and none shall carry him and bury him except me

وَدَفَنَهُAnd he buried himبَيْنَbetweenأَبِيهِhis fatherوَأُمِّهِand his mother

And he buried him between his father and his mother

وَبَنَىand builtعَلَيْهِover himقُبَّةًa dome

and built a dome over him

وَكَتَبَand wroteعَلَيْهَاupon itمَاwhatقَرَأْتَyou read

and wrote upon it what you read

وَهَذَاAnd thisمَاis whatكَانَwasمِنْofخَبَرِهِhis story

And this is what was of his story

أَخْبَرَنِيInformed meأَبُوAbuالْعَلَاءِAl-AlaابْنُIbnيُوسُفَYusufالْقَاضِيthe judge

Abu Al-Ala Ibn Yusuf the judge informed me

قَالَsayingحَدَّثَنِيnarrated to meشَيْخٌan old man

saying: An old man narrated to me

كَانَwho wasمُسِنّاًelderlyصَدُوقاًtruthful

who was elderly and truthful

أَنَّهُthat heحَجَّperformed pilgrimageسَنَةًone yearمِنَofالسِّنِينَthe years

that he performed pilgrimage one of the years

قَالَHe said

He said

وَبَرَزْنَاand we brought outأَحْمَالَنَاour luggageإِلَىtoالْيَاسِرِيَّةِAl-Yasiriyyah

and we brought our luggage out to Al-Yasiriyyah

وَجَلَسْنَاand we satعَلَىonقَرَاحٍopen landنَتَغَدَّىhaving lunch

and we sat on open land having lunch

وَكَلْبٌand a dogرَابِضٌcrouchingبِجِوَارِنَاnear us

and a dog was crouching near us

فَرَمَيْنَاso we threwإِلَيْهِto himمِنْfromبَعْضِsome ofمَاwhatنَأْكُلُwe eat

so we threw to him from some of what we eat

ثُمَّThenارْتَحَلْنَاwe set off

Then we set off

وَنَزَلْنَاand we dismountedبِنَهْوِat the vicinity ofالْمَلِكِthe king

and we dismounted at the vicinity of the king

فَلَمَّاSo whenقَدَّمْنَاwe presentedالسُّفْرَةَthe dining cloth

So when we presented the dining cloth

إِذِbeholdالْكَلْبُthe dogبِعَيْنِهِhimselfرَابِضٌcrouchingبِجِوَارِنَاnear usكَالْيَوْمِlike the dayالأَوَّلِfirst

behold, the very same dog was crouching near us like the first day

فَقُلْتُSo I saidلِلْغِلْمَانِto the servants

So I said to the servants

قَدْindeedتَبِعَنَاfollowed usهَذَاthisالْكَلْبُdog

this dog has indeed followed us

وَقَدْand indeedوَجَبَbecame incumbentحَقُّهُhis rightعَلَيْنَاupon us

and his right upon us has become incumbent

فَتَعَهَّدُوهُso take care of him

so take care of him

وَنَقَضَAnd spreadالْغِلْمَانُthe servantsالسُّفْرَةَthe dining clothبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْهِhim

And the servants spread the dining cloth before him

فَأَكَلَso he ate

so he ate

وَلَمْand he did notيَزَلْceaseتَابِعاًfollowingلَنَاusمِنْfromمَنْزِلٍstationإِلَىtoمَنْزِلٍstation

and he kept following us from station to station

عَلَىonتِلْكَthatالْحَالِcondition

on that condition

لَاnotيَقْدِرُis ableأَحَدٌanyoneأَنْtoيَقْرَبَapproach

while no one was able to approach
