جِمالُناour camels

our camels

ولاand neitherمَحامِلُناour litters

and neither our litters

إلاexcept thatصاحَscreamedوَنَبَحَand barked

except that it screamed and barked

فَكُنَّاso we wereقَدْalreadyأَمِنَّاsafe

so we were safe

مِنْfromسُلَالَةٍSulalahوَغَيْرِهِand othersإِلَىtoمَكَّةَMecca

from Sulalah and others to Mecca.

وَعَزَمْنَاand we resolvedعَلَىonالْخُرُوجِgoing out

And we resolved on going out

فِيonعَمَلٍbusinessإِلَىtoالْيَمَنِYemen

on business to Yemen

فَكَانَand he wasمَعَنَاwith usفِيinأَرْضِthe land ofقُبَاءَQuba

and he was with us in the land of Quba

وَرَجَعْنَاand we returnedإِلَىtoمَدِينَةِthe city ofالسَّلَامِPeace

and we returned to the City of Peace

وَهُوَwhile heمَعَنَاwas with us

while he was with us.

ذَكَرَmentionedأَبُوAbuعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllah

Abu Abdullah mentioned

عَنْon the authority ofأَبِيAbuعُبَيْدَةَUbaidahالنَّحْوِيِّAl-Nahwi

on the authority of Abu Ubaidah Al-Nahwi

وَأَبِيand AbuالْيَقْظَانِAl-YaqzanسُحَيْمِSuhaimبْنِson ofحَفْصٍHafs

and Abu Al-Yaqzan Suhaim bin Hafs

وَأَبِيand AbuالْحَسَنِAl-HasanعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofالْمَدَايِنِيِّAl-Madaini

and Abu Al-Hasan Ali bin Muhammad bin Al-Madaini

عَنْon the authority ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofحَفْصِHafsابْنِson ofسَلَمَةَSalamahبْنِson ofمُحَارِبٍMuharib

on the authority of Muhammad bin Hafs ibn Salamah bin Muharib

وَقَدْand indeedحَدَّثَنَاnarrated to usبِهَذَاwith thisالْحَدِيثِhadith

And indeed this hadith was narrated to us

أَبُوAbuبَكْرٍBakrعَبْدُAbdاللَّهِAllahبْنُson ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiدُنْيَاDunya

by Abu Bakr Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Abi Dunya

بِإِسْنَادٍwith a chain of transmissionذَكَرَهُhe mentioned it

with a chain of transmission which he mentioned

وَهُوَand it isحَدِيثٌa hadithمَشْهُورٌfamous

and it is a famous hadith

أَنَّthatالطَّاعُونَthe plagueالْجَارِفَsweeping

that the sweeping plague

أَتَىbefellعَلَىuponأَهْلِthe people ofدَارٍa house

befell the people of a house

فَلَاso notيَشُكُّdoes doubtأَحَدٌanyoneمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالْمَحَلَّةِthe neighborhood

so no one from the people of the neighborhood doubts

أَنَّهُthat itلَمْdid notيَبْقَremainفِيهَاin itصَغِيرٌa young oneوَلَاnorكَبِيرٌan old one

that there remained in it neither young nor old

وَلَاand norكَانَwas thereقَدْalreadyبَقِيَremainingفِيinالدَّارِthe houseصَبِيٌّa boyرَضِيعٌsucklingصَغِيرٌsmall

and nor had there remained in the house a small suckling infant

يَحْبُوcrawlingوَلَاnorيَقُومُstanding

crawling or standing.

فَعَمَدَso intendedمَنْwhoبَقِيَremainedمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofتِلْكَthatالْمَحَلَّةِneighborhood

So those who remained of the people of that neighborhood intended

إِلَىtowardبَابِthe door ofالدَّارِthe house

toward the door of the house

فَسَدُّوهُand they blocked it

and they blocked it.

فَلَمَّاthen whenكَانَit wasبَعْدَafterذَلِكَthatبِأَشْهُرٍmonths

Then when it was months after that

تَحَوَّلَmovedإِلَيْهَاto itبَعْضُsomeوَرَثَةِheirs ofالْقَوْمِthe people

some heirs of the people moved to it.

فَلَمَّاthen whenفُتِحَwas openedالْبَابُthe door

Then when the door was opened

وَأَفْضَىand ledإِلَىtoعَرْصَةِthe courtyard ofالدَّارِthe house

and led into the courtyard of the house

إِذَاbeholdهوَhe wasبِصَبِيٍّwith a boyيَلْعَبُplayingمَعَwithجَرْوِa puppy ofكَلْبَةٍa female dog

behold, there he was with a boy playing with the puppy of a female dog

كَانَتْthat wasلِأَصْحَابِfor the owners ofالدَّارِthe house

that belonged to the owners of the house.

فَلَمَّاthen whenرَآهَاhe saw itالصَّبِيُّthe boy

Then when the boy saw it

حَبَاhe crawledإِلَيْهَاto it

he crawled to it

فَأَمْكَنَتْهُso she made possible for himمِنْfromلَبَنِهَاher milk

and she offered him her milk.

فَعَلِمُواso they knewأَنَّthatالصَّبِيَّthe boyبَقِيَremainedفِيinالدَّارِthe house

So they knew that the boy had remained in the house

وَصَارَand becameمَنْسِيًّاforgotten

and had become forgotten.

وَاشْتَدَّand intensifiedجُوعُهُhis hunger

And his hunger intensified

وَرَأَىand he sawجَرْوَthe puppy ofالْكَلْبِthe dogيَرْضَعُsuckling

and he saw the puppy of the dog suckling

فَعَطَفَso he felt affectionعَلَيْهَاtoward it

so he felt affection toward it.

فَلَمَّاthen whenسَقَتْهُshe gave it drinkمَرَّةًonce

Then when she gave it drink once

أَدَامَتْshe continuedلَهُfor himوَأَدَامَand he continuedلَهَاfor herالطَّلَبَthe seekingتِلْكَthatالْمُدَّةَperiod

she continued it for him and he continued seeking it for that period.

فَسُبْحَانَso glory be toمُسَبِّبِthe Causer ofالْأَسْبَابِthe causes

So glory be to the Causer of causes.
