وَAndيَصِيحَانِthey both barked

And they both barked

فَsoانْتَبَهْتُI woke upبِbyصِيَاحِthe barkingهُمَاof them both

so I woke up because of their barking

فَandلَمْdid notأَرَI seeشَيْئاًanythingأُنْكِرُI disapprove ofهُit

and I did not see anything that I disapproved of

فَsoضَرَبْتُI beatHُمَاthem both

so I beat them both

وَandطَرَدْتُI drove awayHُمَاthem both

and drove them away

وَandنِمْتُI slept

and slept

ثُمَّthenعَادُواthey returned toالصِّيَاحَthe barkingوَandالنُّبَاحَyelping

then they returned to barking and yelping

فَsoأَنْبَهَانِيthey woke me up

so they woke me up

فَandلَمْdid notأَرَI seeشَيْئاًanythingأُنْكِرُهُI disapprove of itأَيْضاًalso

and I did not see anything that I disapproved of either

فَsoوَثَبْتُI leapedإِلَيْهِمَاtowards them both

so I leaped towards them both

وَandطَرَدْتُهُمَاdrove them away

and drove them away

فَandمَاnotأَحْسَسْتُdid I feelإِلَّاexceptوَthatقَدْalreadyسَقَطَاthey both fellعَلَيَّupon me

and I suddenly felt them falling upon me

يُحَرِّكَانِيmoving meبِwithأَيْدِيهِمَاtheir handsوَandأَرْجُلِهِمَاtheir feet

moving me with their hands and feet

كَمَاjust asيُحَرِّكُmovesالْيَقِظَانُthe awake personالنَّائِمَthe sleeperلِdue toأَمْرٍa matterهَائِلٍterrifying

just as an awake person moves a sleeping person due to a terrifying matter

فَsoوَثَبْتُI leaped

so I leaped

فَand loإِذَاbeholdبِthere isأَسْوَدَa black creatureسَالِحٍarmedقَدْhadقَرُبَdrawn nearمِنِّيto me

and behold, an armed black creature had drawn near to me

فَsoوَثَبْتُI leapedإِلَيْهِtowards it

so I leaped towards it

فَandقَتَلْتُهُI killed it

and killed it

وَandانْصَرَفْتُI returnedإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِيmy home

and returned to my home

فَsoكَانَwereالْكَلْبَانِthe two dogsبَعْدَafterاللَّهِAllahعَزَّAlmightyوَandجَلَّMajestic is Heسَبَباًa causeلِforخَلَاصِيmy salvation

thus the two dogs, after Allah Almighty, were the cause of my salvation.

وَAndيُرَىit is relatedأَنَّthatلِforمَيْمُونَةَMaimunahزَوْجِthe wife ofالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِand grant him peaceوَandسَلَّمَpeace

And it is related that Maimunah, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace

كَلْبٌa dogيُقَالُcalledلَهُfor himمِسْمَارٌMismār

had a dog called Mismār

وَandكَانَhe wasإِذَاwhenحَجَّتْshe went for Hajjخَرَجَتْshe went outبِwithهِhimمَعَهَاwith her

and when she went for Hajj, she took him out with her

فَsoلَيْسَnotيَطْمَعُdoes anyone dareأَحَدٌanyoneبِtoالْقُرْبِcome closeمِنْtoرَحْلِher riding saddleهَاherمَعَalong withمِسْمَارٍMismār

so no one would dare come close to her riding saddle with Mismār around

فَandإِذَاwhenرَجَعَتْshe returnedجَعَلَتْshe placedهُhimفِيinبَنِيBanuجَدِيلَةَJadilah

and when she returned, she would leave him with Banu Jadilah

وَandأَنْفَقَتْspentعَلَيْهِon him

and provide for him

فَsoلَمَّاwhenمَاتَhe diedقِيلَit was saidلَهَاto herمَاتَdiedمِسْمَارٌMismār

so when he died, it was said to her: Mismār has died

فَsoبَكَتْshe weptوَandقَالَتْsaidفُجِعْتُI have been stricken with griefبِoverمِسْمَارٍMismār

so she wept and said: I have been stricken with grief over Mismār.

وَAndحَدَّثَنِيnarrated to meأَبُوAbuمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadعَبْدُAbdulرَحْمَنِRahmanبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahقَالَwho said

And Abu Muhammad Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah narrated to me, saying:

حَدَّثَنَاnarrated to usيَحْيَىYahyaبْنُson ofأَيُّوبَAyyubعَنْfromيُونُسَYunusبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuرَافِعٍRafiقَالَwho said

narrated to us Yahya bin Ayyub from Yunus bin Abu Rafi, who said:

كَانَتْbelongedلِtoالزُّهْرِيِّAl-Zuhriكَلْبَةُa female hunting dogصَيْدٍhunting

Al-Zuhri had a female hunting dog

فَandكَانَhe used toيَطْلُبُseekلَهَاfor herالْفُحُولَmale dogs

and he used to seek male dogs for her

يَلْتَمِسُseekingنَسْلَهَاher offspring

seeking her offspring

قَالَHe said

He said:

وَandكَانَwasرَجُلٌa manيَشْرَبُdrinkingعِنْدَatقَوْمٍsome people's place

and a man was drinking at the place of some people

فَsoرَأَىhe sawمِنْamongهُمْthemرَجُلاًa manيُلَاحِظُglancing atامْرَأَتَهُhis wife

and he saw among them a man glancing at his wife

فَsoقَالَhe recitedخَفِيفٌKhafif

so Khafif recited:

كُلْEatهَنِيئاًheartilyوَandمَاwhatشَرِبْتَyou drankمَرِيئاًmay it be wholesome

Eat heartily, and may what you drank be wholesome

ثُمَّthenقُمْget upفَandغَيْرَother thanكَرِيمِnoble

then get up, O unnoble one.
