The Prophet said to him, 'Draw near.' So he drew near, then he stood and asked for permission like a respectful person.

He approached until he knelt between the Prophet's hands and said, 'O Messenger of God! What is faith?'

The Prophet said, 'That you believe in God, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Day of the Hereafter, and destiny, both its good and its evil being from God.'

قَالَHe saidصَدَقْتَYou have spoken the truth

He said, 'You have spoken the truth.'

We were amazed by him asking and confirming him. Then he said, 'O Messenger of God! What is Islam?'

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'To testify that there is no deity but God, to establish the prayer, to give the alms, to fast during Ramadan, and to make pilgrimage to the House for whoever is able to do so.'

قَالَHe saidصَدَقْتَYou have spoken the truth

He (the Bedouin) said, 'You have spoken the truth.'

ثُمَّThenقَالَhe saidيَاOرَسُولَmessengerاللَّهِof Godفَمَاwhat isالإِحْسَانُihsan?

Then he said, 'O Messenger of God! What is ihsan?'

فَقَالَHe saidعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلاَمُpeaceالإِحْسَانُihsanأَنْthatتَعْبُدَyou worshipاللَّهَGodكَأَنَّكَas if youتَرَاهُsee Himفَإِنَّfor ifلَمْnotتَكُنْyou areتَرَاهُseeing Himفَإِنَّهُthen Heيَرَاكَsees you

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Ihsan is to worship God as if you see Him; if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.'

فَقَالَHe saidصَدَقْتَYou have spoken the truthوَهَذَاAnd thisالْحَدِيثُhadithمَعْرُوفٌis well-knownوَأَبُوand AbuمَنْصُورُMansourرَحِمَهُmay God have mercyاللَّهُGodإنَّمَاindeedذَكَرَmentionedالْحَقِيقَةَthe truth

He said, 'You have spoken the truth. And this hadith is well-known, and may God have mercy on Abu Mansour; indeed, he mentioned the truth.'

قَالَHe saidفَمَنْSo whoeverاسْتَيْقِنَis certain

He said, 'So whoever is certain of this and acknowledges it is a believer,'

لَأَنَّهُbecauseعَقَدَhe has contractedعَلَىonالصَّوَابِthe truthعَلَىonمَاwhatبَيَّنَاهُwe have clarifiedوَإِنَّمَاand indeedقَالَhe saidإنْIfاسْتَيْقَنَhe is certainبِهَذَاof thisوَأَقَرَّand acknowledgesبِهِit

because he has contracted on the truth of what we have clarified, and indeed he said: 'If he is certain of this and acknowledges it,'

لَأَنَّBecauseالإِيمَانُthe faithإِقْرَارٌis an acknowledgmentبِاللِّسَانِby the tongueوَتَصْدِيقٌand a confirmationبِالْجَنَانِby the heartفَإِذَاSo ifصَدَّقَhe confirms itبِقَلْبِهwith his heartوَأَقَرَّand acknowledges itبِلِسَانِهِwith his tongueفَإِنَّهُthen heمُؤْمِنٌis a believerوَإِذَاAnd ifصَدَّقَهُhe confirms itبِقَلْبِهِwith his heartوَلَمْand notيُقِرَّacknowledgeبِلِسَانِهِwith his tongueوَهُوَand he isفِيinالإِمْكَانِpossibility

Because faith is an acknowledgment by the tongue and a confirmation by the heart. So if he confirms it with his heart and acknowledges it with his tongue, then he is a believer. And if he confirms it with his heart but does not acknowledge it with his tongue, while he is in the possibility of acknowledging it,
