هَذَاthisهَكَذَاthusوَكَانَتْand wasالرُّؤْيَةُthe visionغَيْرَnonمُؤَثِّرَةًinfluentialفِيinالْمَرْئِيِّthe visibleلَمْdid notتُوَجِّبْnecessitate
This was thus, and the vision was not influential in the visible, nor did it necessitate a likeness or a transformation from reality.
وَلَمْand did notيَسْتَحِلَّit is impossibleعَلَىforاللَّهِGodعَزَّ وَجَلَّthe Almighty and ExaltedأَنْtoيَرَىseeعِبَادَهُHis servantsالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersنَفْسَهُHimselfفِيinجَنَّاتِهِHis gardens
And it is impossible for God, the Almighty and Exalted, to show His servants, the believers, Himself in His gardens.
بَابُA chapterفِيinالرُّؤْيَةِthe vision
A chapter in the vision
احْتُجَتْIt was arguedالمُعَزِّلَةُthe advocatesفِيinأَنْthatاللَّهَGodعَزَّ وَجَلَّthe Almighty and Exaltedلَاnotيُرَىseenبِالْأَبْصَارِby the eyes
It was argued by the advocates that God, the Almighty and Exalted, is not seen by the eyes.
بِقَوْلِهِwith His sayingعَزَّ وَجَلَّthe Almighty and Exaltedلَاnoتُدْرِكُهُperceives Himالْأَبْصَارُthe eyesوَهُوَand Heيُدْرِكُperceivesالْأَبْصَارَthe eyes
With His saying, the Almighty and Exalted, 'No eyes can perceive Him, and He perceives the eyes.'
قَالُواThey saidفَلَمَّاSo whenعَطَفَHe addsاللَّهُGodعَزَّ وَجَلَّthe Almighty and Exaltedبِقَوْلِهِwith His sayingوَهُوَand Heيُدْرِكُperceivesالْأَبْصَارَthe eyesعَلَىonقَوْلِهِHis sayingلَاnotتُدْرِكُهُperceives Him
They said: So when God, the Almighty and Exalted, added in His saying, 'and He perceives the eyes,' to His saying 'no eyes can perceive Him...'
وَكَانَand wasقَوْلُهُHis sayingوَهُوَand Heيُدْرِكُperceivesالْأَبْصَارَthe eyesعَلَىonالْعُمُومِthe generalityأَنَّهُthat Heيُدْرِكُهَاperceives itفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe worldوَالْآخِرَةِand the Hereafter
And His saying 'and He perceives the eyes' is on the generality that He perceives them in this world and the Hereafter.
كَانَwasقَوْلُهُHis sayingلَاnotتُدْرِكُهُperceives Himالْأَبْصَارُthe eyesدَلِيلًاevidenceعَلَىonأَنَّهَاthat theyلَاnotتَرَىseeهُHimالْأَبْصَارُthe eyesفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe worldوَالْآخِرَةِand the Hereafter
His saying 'no eyes can perceive Him' was evidence that the eyes do not see Him in this world and the Hereafter.
وَكَانَAnd wasفِيinعُمُومِthe generalقَوْلُهُHis sayingوَهُوَand Heيُدْرِكُperceivesالْأَبْصَارَthe eyesلَأَنَّbecauseأَحَدٌoneالْكَلَامَيْنِof the two speechesمُعَطَّفٌis connectedعَلَىtoالْآخَرِthe other
And His saying 'and He perceives the eyes' is connected to the other speech.
قِيلَIt was saidلَهُمْto themفَيَجِبُIt is obligatoryإِذَاifكَانَit isعُمُومُthe generalityالْقَوْلَيْنِof the two statementsوَاحِدًاoneوَكَانَتِand the eyesالْأَبْصَارُthe eyesأَبْصَارًاsight ofالْعُيُونِthe eyesوَأَبْصَارًاand sight ofالْقُلُوبِthe heartsلَأَنَّbecauseاللَّهَGodعَزَّ وَجَلَّthe Almighty and Exaltedقَالَتْsaidفَإِنَّهَاfor indeedلَاnotتُعْمِيblindالْأَبْصَارَthe eyesوَلَكِنَّbutتُعْمِيblindالْقُلُوبَthe heartsالَّتِيthatفِيinالصُّدُورِthe chests
It was said to them: It is obligatory if the generality of the two statements is one, and that the eyes are the sight of the eyes, and the sight of the hearts, because God, the Almighty and Exalted, said: 'For indeed, the eyes do not blind, but the hearts that are in the chests blind.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidأُولِيthose whoالْأَيْدِيthe handsوَالْأَبْصَارُand the eyes
And He said, 'Those who have hands and eyes.'
أَيْThat isفَهِيَthey areبِالْأَبْصَارِby the eyesفَأَرَادَhe intendedأَبْصَارَthe sight of the heartsالْقُلُوبِthe heartsالَّتِيthatيَقْصِدُis intendedبِهَاby itالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believers
That is, they are by the eyes; he intended the sight of the hearts that is intended by it the believers.
