الكَافِرينَthe disbelieversوَيَقُولُand he saysأَهْلُthe people ofاللُّغَةِlanguageفُلاَنَso-and-soبَصِيرٌperceptiveبِصِنَاعَتِهِin his craft

The disbelievers, and the people of language say that so-and-so is perceptive in his craft.

يُرِيدُونَthey meanبَصِيرَةًperceptionالعِلْمَknowledge

They mean to say that he is perceptive in knowledge.

وَيَقُولُونَand they sayقَدْindeedأَبْصَرْتُهُI have perceived itبِقَلْبِيwith my heartكَمَاasيَقُولُونَthey sayقَدْindeedأَبْصَرْتُهُI have perceived itبِعَيْنَيَّwith my eyes

And they say, 'Indeed, I have perceived it with my heart,' as they also say, 'Indeed, I have perceived it with my eyes.'

فَإِذَاSo ifكَانَتِit isالْبَصَرُsightبَصَرًاsightالْعُيُونِof the eyesوَبَصَرٌand the sightالْقُلُوبِof the heartsثُمَّthenأَوْجَبُواthey imposedعَلَيْنَاon usأَنْto (that)يَكُونَthere beقَوْلُهُhis sayingلَاnotتُدْرِكُهُcan perceive itالأَبْصَارُthe sightsفِيinالْعُمُومِgeneralityكَقَوْلِهِlike his sayingوَهُوَand heيُدْرِكُcan perceiveالأَبْصَارَthe sights

So if sight is the sight of the eyes and the sight of the hearts, then they imposed upon us that his saying 'Not can sights perceive Him' is general like his saying 'and He can perceive sights.'

لِأَنَّbecauseأَحَدًاoneالكَلَامَيْنِof the two statementsمَعْطُوفًاis conjoinedعَلَىonالْآخَرِthe otherوَجَبَit was necessaryعَلَيْهِمْon themبِحُجَّتِهِمْby their argumentأَنْthatاللَّهَAllahعَزَّ وَجَلَّthe Exalted and Majesticلَاdoes notيُدْرَكُis perceivedبِأَبْصَارِby the eyesالْعُيُونِthe eyesوَلَاand notبِأَبْصَارِby the eyesالْقُلُوبِthe heartsلِأَنَّbecauseقَوْلَهُhis sayingلَاnotتُدْرَكُهُcan perceive itالأَبْصَارُthe sightsفِيinالْعُمُومِgeneralityكَقَوْلِهِlike his sayingوَهُوَand heيُدْرِكُcan perceiveالأَبْصَارَthe sights

Because one of the two statements is conjoined to the other, they must establish by their arguments that Allah, exalted and majestic, cannot be perceived by the eyes, nor by the hearts, because his saying 'Not can sights perceive Him' is general like his saying 'and He can perceive sights.'

وَإِذَاAnd ifلَمْnotيَكُنْbeأَنْthatيَكُونَit beقَوْلُهُhis sayingلَاnotتُدْرَكُهُcan perceive itالأَبْصَارُthe sights

And if it were not that his saying 'Not can sights perceive Him' does not

هَكَذَاlike thisفَقَدْthen it mustوَجَبَit is necessaryأَخَصُّmore specificمِنْthanقَوْلِهِhis sayingوَهُوَand heيُدْرِكُcan perceiveالأَبْصَارَthe sights

like this, then it must be more specific than his saying 'and He can perceive sights.'

وَانْتَفَضُواand they were shakenاحْتِجَاجَهُمْtheir argumentوَقِيلَand it was saidلَهُمْto themإِنَّكُمْthat youزَعَمْتُمْhave claimedأَنَّهُthat if it isلَوْifكَانَit wasقَوْلُهُhis sayingلَاnotتُدْرَكُهُcan perceive itالأَبْصَارُthe sightsخَاصًّاspecificفِيinوَقْتٍa timeدُونَother thanوَقْتٍa timeلَكَانَit would have beenقَوْلُهُhis sayingوَهُوَand heيُدْرِكُcan perceiveالأَبْصَارَthe sightsعِندَهُمْto them

And their argument was shaken, and it was said to them: 'You claimed that if his saying 'Not can sights perceive Him' is specific to a certain time, then his saying 'and He can perceive sights' would be specific to a certain time for you.'

وَكَانَand it wasقَوْلُهُhis sayingلَيْسَis notكَمَثَلِهِlike Himشَيْءٌthing

And his saying 'There is nothing like Him' is not like anything.

وَقَوْلُهُand his sayingلَاdoes notتَأْخُذُهُis not taken byسِنَةٌa slumberوَلَاand notنَوْمٌsleepوَقَوْلُهُand his sayingلَاdoes notيَظْلِمُoppressالنَّاسَthe peopleشَيْئًاanything

And his saying 'He does not take a slumber, nor sleep' and his saying 'He does not oppress the people anything' is not at a time.

فِيinوَقْتٍa timeدُونَother thanوَقْتٍa timeفَإِنَّSo ifجَعَلْتُمْyou madeقَوْلَهُhis sayingلَاnotتُدْرَكُهُcan perceive itالأَبْصَارُthe sightsخَاصًّاspecificاحْتِجَاجُكُمْyour argumentعَلَيْكُمْagainst youوَقِيلَand it was saidلَكُمْto you

So if you made his saying 'Not can sights perceive Him' specific, this is an argument against you, and it was said to you:

إِذَاifكَانَit wasقَوْلُهُhis sayingلَاnotتُدْرَكُهُcan perceive itالأَبْصَارُthe sightsخَاصًّاspecificوَلَمْand did notيَجِبْmustخُصُوصَspecificityهَذِهِtheseالْآيَاتِversesفَلَمْso did notأُنْكِرْتُمْyou deniedأَنْthatيَكُونَbeقَوْلُهُhis sayingعَزَّ وَجَلَّthe Exalted and Majesticلَاnotتُدْرَكُهُcan perceive itالأَبْصَارُthe sightsإِنَّمَاbutأَرَادَwantedفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe world

If his saying 'Not can sights perceive Him' is specific and these verses do not need to be denied, then you have denied that his saying, exalted and majestic, 'Not can sights perceive Him' is intended to be in the world.
