(١)(1)الْأَمِيرُThe Prince«جُلُسْتَر»"Gloster"

(1) The Prince "Gloster"

أَيُّهَاOالْقَارِئُreaderالْعَزِيزُthe dear

O dear reader:

لَاNoشَكٌّdoubtفِيinأَنَّكَthat youتُحِبُّloveأَنْtoتَعْرِفَknowمَنْwhoهُوَheالْأَمِيرُthe prince«جُلُسْتَر»"Gloster"

There is no doubt that you love to know who the prince "Gloster" is.

الَّذِيwhoعُنِيَcared(اهْتَمَّ)(was concerned)بِالْمَلِكِfor the king«لِير»،"Lear",وَبَذَلَand gaveلَهُhimكُلَّallمَاwhatفِيwithinقُدْرَتِهِhis capacity..

He who cared for King "Lear" and gave him all that was within his capacity.

مِنfromرِعَايَةٍcareوَإِكْرَامٍ.and honor.

in terms of care and honor.

وَإِنِّيAnd Iلَمُحَدِّثُكَwill tell youبِبَعْضِsomeحَدِيثِهِof his storyالْمُحْزِنِ؛the sad;

And I will tell you some of his sad story;

لِتَتَعَرَّفَto knowمَكَانَهُhis placeمِنamongشُخُوصِthe charactersهَذِهِof thisالْقِصَّةِstoryالْخَالِدَةِ.the eternal.

to know his place among the characters of this eternal story.

كَانَHe wasالْأَمِيرُthe prince«جُلُسْتَر»"Gloster"شَدِيدَveryالْوَفَاءِloyalلِمَلِيكِهِto his king«لِير»."Lear."

The prince "Gloster" was very loyal to his king "Lear."

وَقَدْAnd heحَزِنَsaddenedلِمَاfor whatأَصَابَهُhas befallen himمِنofنَكَبَاتٍcalamitiesوَأَحْدَاثٍ،and events,

And he was saddened for what has befallen him of calamities and events,

وَبَكَىand he criedلِعَثْرَتِهِfor his stumble(لِسَقْطَتِهِ).(for his fall).

and cried for his stumble (for his fall).

وَلَمAnd notيَعْدِلْهُequal him(يُسَاوِيهِ)(that equals him)

And there was none equal to him (that equals him).

فِيInإِخْلَاصِهِhis loyaltyوَوَفَائِهِand fidelityلَهُto him,,غَيْرُother than«كِنت»:"Kent": الْوَزِيرِ،the minister,و«كُرْدِلْيَا»:and "Cordelia": صُغْرَىthe youngestبَنَاتِof the daughtersالْمَلِكِthe king«لِير»."Lear."

In his loyalty and fidelity to him, other than "Kent": the minister, and "Cordelia": the youngest of the daughters of King "Lear."

وَلَدَانِAnd he hadالْأَمِيرُthe princeكَانَthere wereلِهَذَاtwo sons of thisالْأَمِيرِprinceالْمُخْلِصِthe devotedالْوَفِيِّloyal.

And there were two sons of this loyal and devoted prince.

ٱسْمُThe nameأَحَدُهُمَا:of one of them:«إِدْجَارَ»"Edgar"وَٱسْمُand the nameالثَّانِي:the second:«إِدْمُنْدَ»."Edmund."

The name of one of them is "Edgar" and the name of the second is "Edmund."

فَأَمَّاAs forالأَوَّلُthe first,فَكَانَhe wasمَثَالًاan example ofالْوَفَاءِ،loyalty,

As for the first, he was an example of loyalty,

وَأَمَّاand as forأَخُوهُhis brotherفَكَانَhe wasمَثَالًاan example ofالْعُقُوقِ.disloyalty.

and as for his brother, he was an example of disloyalty.

وَلَمAnd notيَكُنِwas heالثَّانِيthe secondعَلَىin fact,الْحَقيقةِ —the truth —وَلَدَthe sonالْأَمِيرُof the prince«جُلُسْتَر»؛"Gloster";وَلَكِنَّهُbut heكَانَwasمُنْتَسِبًاrelatedإِلَيْهِ؛to him;

And the second was not actually the son of the prince "Gloster"; but he was related to him;

لِأَنَّهُbecause heتَبَنَّاهُadopted him(اتَّخَذَهُ(took himابْنًا) —as a son) —مُنْذُsinceنَشْأَتِهِ —his creation —وَجَعَلَهُand made himصِنْوًاlike(أَخًا)(a brother)

because he adopted him (took him as a son) — since his creation — and made him like (a brother) to his son "Edgar,"

وَبَذَلَand he gaveلَهُhimكُلَّallمَاwhatيَمْلِكُhe ownsمِنofرِعَايَةٍcareوَتَهْذِيبٍ.and grooming.

and he gave him all that he owned of care and grooming.

فَلَمَّاWhenكَبِرَhe grew up«إِدْمُنْدُ»"Edmund"نَسِيَhe forgotكُلَّallمَاwhatحَبَّاهُhe granted himبِهِwith itالْأَمِيرُthe prince«جُلُسْتَر»"Gloster"

When "Edmund" grew up he forgot all that the prince "Gloster" granted him.

(مَا(whatأَعْطَاهُhe gave himإِيَّاهُ)،to him),

(what he gave him),

وَلَمand did notيَكُنْhe beلَهُfor himغَرَضٌa goalيَسْعَىhe seeksإِلَىtoتَحْقِيقِهِ،achieving it,

and he had no goal to seek to achieve,

غَيْرُother thanالْوِشَايَةِspying(السَّعْيِ(the pursuitبِالسُّوءِ)of evil)

other than spying (the pursuit of evil) with his brother,

وَإِيغَارِand instigatingصَدْرِthe heartأَبِيهِof his father(إِشْعَالِهِ(ignitingغَيْظًا)anger)

and instigating the heart of his father (igniting anger) against him;
