لَيْسَNotالْبِرَّthe righteousnessأَنthatتُوَلُّواyou turnوُجُوهَكُمْyour facesقِبَلَtowardالْمَشْرِقِthe eastوَالْمَغْرِبِand the west.

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces towards the east and the west.

وَلَكِنَّButالْبِرَّrighteousnessمَنْis whoeverءَامَنَbelievesبِاللَّهِin Allahوَالْيَوْمِand the Dayالْآخِرِof Judgment.

But righteousness is in one who believes in Allah and the Last Day.

وَالْمَلَائِكَةِand the angelsوَالْكِتَابِand the Bookوَالنَّبِيِّينَand the prophets.

and the angels, the Book, and the prophets.

قالHe said::ثمthenوصفHe describedاللهAllahعلىaccording toهذاthisالاسمnameماwhatلزِمَهُwas required of himمنofالعملdeeds

He said: Then Allah described according to this name what was required of him from deeds.

فقالHe said::﴿(وَعَاتَىAnd gaveالْمَالَthe wealthعَلَىuponحُبِّهِHis loveذَوِيto the relativesالْقُرْبَىthe near ones..

He said: "And gave wealth out of love for Him to relatives."

وَالْيَتَامَىand orphansوَالْمَسَاكِينَand the needyوَابْنَand the sonالسَّبِيلِof the way..

and orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer.

وَالْسَّائِلِينَand those who askوَفِيand inالرِّقابِthe freeing of slaves.

and those who ask, and in the freeing of slaves.

وَأَقَامَAnd establishedالصَّلَاةَthe prayerوَآتَىand gaveالزَّكَاةَthe almsgiving.

And established the prayer and gave the almsgiving.

وَالْمُوفُونَAnd those who fulfillبِعَهْدِهِمْtheir covenantإِذَاwhenعَهَدُواthey make a covenant.

And those who fulfill their covenant when they make a covenant.

وَالصَّابِرِينَAnd the patientsفِيinالْبَأْسَاءِthe hardshipsوَالضَّرَّاءِand the afflictionsوَحِينَand at the time ofالْبَأْسِthe war.

And the patient in hardship, affliction and at the time of war.

أُولَـئِكَThose areالَّذِينَthe ones whoصَدَقُواwere truthfulوَأُولَـئِكَand thoseهُمُareالْمُتَّقُونَthe righteous.

Those are the ones who were truthful, and those are the righteous.

فقالHe said::سلهمAsk themهلifدخلthis is includedهذاin thisالعملdeedفيinهذاthisالاسمname,

He said: Ask them if this is included in this deed in this name,

وقالand said:﴿(وَمَنْAnd whoeverأَرَادَwantsالْآخِرَةَthe Hereafterوَسَعَىand strivesلَهَاfor itسَعْيَهَاas is fitting for itوَهُوَwhile he isمُؤْمِنٌa believer.[الإسراء: ۱۹][Al-Isra: 19]

and said: "And whoever seeks the Hereafter and strives for it as is fitting for it while he is a believer."

فأُلزِمَSo he made obligatoryالاسمthe nameالعملthe deedو العملand the deedالاسمthe name.

So he made obligatory the name on the deed and the deed on the name.

المقصودThe intendedهناhereأنهis thatلمit did notيثبتestablishالمدحthe praiseإلاexceptعلىwithإيمانfaithمعهalong withالعملthe deed,

The intended meaning here is that praise has not been established except with faith along with the deed,

لاnotعلىwithإيمانfaithخالٍthat is emptyعنofعملdeed.

not with faith that is empty of deed.

فإذاSo ifعرفit is knownأنthatالذمcensureوالعقابand punishmentواقعis establishedفيinتركabandoningالعملthe deed,

So if it is known that censure and punishment is established in abandoning the deed,

كانthenبعدafterذلكthat,نزاعهمtheir disputeلاnotفائدةbenefitفيهin it,

then their dispute is of no benefit,

بلbutيكونit becomesنزاعاًa disputeلفظياًof words,

but it becomes a dispute of words,

معwithأنهمthey areمخطئونmistakenفيinاللفظthe wording,

while they are mistaken in the wording,

مخالفونcontradictingللكتابthe Bookوالسنةand the Sunnah,

and contradicting the Book and the Sunnah,

وإنand ifقالواthey saidإنهthat itلاnotيضرهharm himتركabandoningالعملthe deed,

And if they said that abandoning the deed does not harm him,

فهذاthen thisكفرis disbeliefصريحexplicit,

then this is explicit disbelief,

وبعضand someالناسpeopleيحكيrelateهذاthisعنهمabout themوأنهمand that theyيقولونsay:

And some people relate this about them and that they say:

إنthatاللهAllahفرضobligatedعلىonالعبادthe servantsفرائضobligationsولمand did notيردwantأنthatيعملوهاthey do themولاand notيضرهمharm themتركهاabandoning them,

"Allah has obligated duties on His servants but did not want them to perform them nor harm them by abandoning them."

وهذاand thisقدmayيكونbeقولthe statementالغالبيةof the majorityالذينwhoيقولونsay:

And this may be the statement of the majority who say:

لاnoيدخلentersالنارthe Hellfireمنfromأهلthe peopleالتوحيدof monotheismأحدanyone,

"No one from the people of monotheism enters the Hellfire,

لكنbutماwhatعلمتI learnedمعيناًanyone specificأحكيthat I can relate thisعنهabout him this statement,

but what I learned is that I cannot relate this statement about anyone.

وإنماThe people onlyالناسpeopleيحكونهrelate itفيinالكتبthe booksولاand notيعينونspecifyقائلهthe speaker,

The people only relate it in books and do not specify the speaker,

وقدand mayيكونbeقولthe statementمنofلاnoخلاقvirtue (لهfor himمنofالفساقthe sinnersوالمنافقينand the hypocrites.

and may be the statement of those who have no virtue from the sinners and hypocrites.

يقولونThey say:::لاNoيضرit harmsمعwithالإيمانfaithذنبٌa sinأوorمعwithالتوحيدmonotheism,وبعضand someكلامwordsالرادينof those respondingعلىtoالمرجئةthe Murji'ah,وصفهمdescribing them.

They say: "It does not harm with faith a sin or with monotheism." Some words of those refuting the Murji'ah described them.

ويدلand it indicatesعلىtoذلكthatقولهHis sayingتَعَالَى, the Exalted,فيinآخرthe lastالآيةverse:

And it indicates that in His saying, the Exalted, in the last verse:

﴿﴿أُولَـئِكَThose areالَّذِينَthe ones whoصَدَقُواwere truthfulوَأُولَـئِكَand thoseهُمُthey areالْمُتَّقُونَthe righteous.)

"Those are the ones who were truthful, and those are the righteous."

[البقرة: ۱۷۷][Al-Baqarah: 177]،,

فقولهSo His saying:صدقواThey were truthful,أي:means:فيinقولهمtheir sayingمناin us,

So His saying: They were truthful, means: in their saying in us,

كقولهlike His sayingقَالَتِThe Bedouins said:الْأَعْرَابُThe BedouinsءَامَنَّاWe have believed.::قُلSayأَتُؤْمِنُونَDo you believe?وَلَكِنbutقُولُواsayأَسْلَمْنَاWe have submitted.وَلَمَّاAnd whenيَدْخُلِhas not enteredالْإِيمَانُthe faithفِيintoقُلُوبِكُمْyour hearts.

like His saying: The Bedouins said: 'We have believed.' Say: 'Do you believe? But say: 'We have submitted,' and when faith has not entered into your hearts.

وإنAnd ifتطيعواyou obeyاللَّهَAllahوَرَسُولَهُand His Messengerلاnoيَلْتَكُمْwill you loseمِنْfromأَعْمَلِكُمْyour deedsشَيْئاًanything.

And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, you will not lose anything of your deeds.

إِنَّIndeed,اللَّهَAllahغَفُورٌis the Most Forgiving,رَحِيمٌthe Most Merciful.

Indeed, Allah is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

إِنَّمَاIndeed, onlyالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersالَّذِينَwhoءَامَنُواhave believedبِاللَّهِin Allahوَرَسُولِهِand His Messenger.ثُمَّThenلَمْdid notيَرْتَابُواdoubt.

Indeed, the believers are those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then did not doubt.

وَجَهَدُواand striveبِأَمْوَالِهِمْwith their wealthوَأَنفُسِهِمْand themselvesفِيinسَبِيلِ اللَّهِthe path of Allah.

and strive with their wealth and themselves in the path of Allah.

أُولَـئِكَThose areهُمُthey areالصَّادِقُونَthe truthful.

Those are they are the truthful.

[الحجرات][Al-Hujurat]،,

[Al-Hujurat],

أي:It means: همtheyالصادقونare the truthfulفيinقولهمtheir statement:

It means: they are the truthful in their statement:

ءَامَنَّاWe have believed.::بِاللَّهِin Allahوَبِرَسُولِهِand in His Messenger.بِخِلَافِunlikeالكاذبينthe liars.

We have believed in Allah and in His Messenger, unlike the liars.

الذينThose whoقالsaidاللهAllahفِيهمabout them:

Those who Allah has said about them:

﴿﴿إِذَاWhenجَاءَكَcomes to youالْمُنَفِقُونَthe hypocritesقَالُواthey say,نَشْهَدُWe bear witnessإِنَّكَthat you areلَرَسُولُ اللَّهِindeed the Messenger of Allah.وَاللَّهُAnd Allahيَعْلَمُknowsإِنَّكَthat you areلَرَسُولُهُindeed His Messenger.وَاللَّهُAnd Allahيَشْهَدُbears witnessإِنَّthat indeedالْمُنَفِقِينَthe hypocritesلَكَذِبُونَare liars.)

“When the hypocrites come to you, they say, 'We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.' And Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger, and Allah bears witness that indeed the hypocrites are liars."
