The people who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' while they are not believers, they deceive Allah and those who have believed, and they deceive not except themselves and they do not perceive.

In their hearts is a disease, and Allah increases their disease. And for them is a painful torment because of what they used to lie.

It clarifies that the people must be tested; that is, they must be subjected to trials and examinations. It is said: I tested gold if you put it in fire to distinguish it from what has mixed with it. And from this is the saying of Moses: 'If it is not a trial from you, it leads astray whoever you want and guides whoever you want.'

And you tested them by sending the messengers and sending down the books to clarify the believer from the infidel, the truthful from the liar, and the hypocrite from the sincere, thus making that a reason for the misguidance of some people and guidance for others.

And the Quran contains much of this, describing the believers as truthful and the hypocrites as liars, because both groups professed with their tongues, 'We believe.' Whoever confirms their word with their actions is a truthful believer, and whoever says with their tongue what is not in their heart is a lying hypocrite.

It indicates that the intended meaning is to be truthful in their saying: 'We believed.' Indeed, this is the saying that they were commanded to say, and they used to say it, and they were not commanded to speak it.

And to say, 'We are righteous or virtuous,' is to praise oneself. And it was said by the group: 'Whoever claims that he is such will have a rank on the Day of Regret, if they are with the righteous and hear with the Messiah.
