In the two Sahihs, Zaid ibn Arqam said: We went out with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey that affected the people with a hardship. Abdullah ibn Ubay said to his companions: Do not spend on whomever is with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse.

He said: ‘Surely, when we return to the city, the mighty will expel the weak from it.’

فَأَتَيْتُSo I came toالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetفَأَخْبَرْتُهُand informed him,,فَأَرْسَلَand he sentإِلَىtoعَبْدِ اللَّهِAbdullahبْنِthe son ofأَبِيAbi,,فَسَأَلَهُand asked himفَاجْتَهَدَand he exerted himselfيَمِينَهُhis oathمَاwhatفَعَلَhe did,,فَقَالَso he said::كَذَبَZaid liedرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهof Allahفَوَقَعَand it struckفِيinنَفْسِيmy soulمِمَّاfrom whatقَالُوهُthey saidشِدَّةًdifficultyحَتَّىuntilأَنْزَلَAllah revealedاللَّهَAllahتَصْدِيقِيmy confirmation

So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him, and he sent to Abdullah ibn Ubay, and asked him, and he exerted his oath about what he did, and he said: ‘Zaid lied about the Messenger of Allah,' and it struck in my soul from what they had said with difficulty until Allah revealed my confirmation.

(إِذَا(Whenجَاءَكَcomes to youالْمُتَفِقُونَ)the hypocrites).

(When the hypocrites come to you).

قَالَHe said::ثُمَّThenدَعَاهُمْhe called themالنَّبِيُّthe Prophetوandلِيَسْتَغْفِرَto ask forgivenessلَهُمْfor them,,فَلَوَّوْاbut they turned their heads.رُؤُوسَهُمْtheir heads.

Then the Prophet called them to ask forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads.

وَفِيAnd inغَزْوَةِthe battleتَبُوكَof Tabukاسْتَنفَرَهُمْhe called them to armsالنَّبِيُّthe Prophetكَمَاasاسْتَنَفَرَhe called to armsغَيْرَهُمْothers,,فَخَرَجَso some went outبَعْضُهُمْsome of themمَعَهُwith him,,وَبَعْضُهُمْand some of themتَخَلَّفُواstayed behind.،,وَكَانَand there wasفِيamongالَّذِينَthose whoخَرَجُواwent outمَعَهُwith himمِنْsomeهُمْtheyبِقَتْلِهِwho thought of killing himفِيinالطَّرِيقِthe roadهَمُّواthey intendedبِحَلِّto loosenحِزَامِهِthe beltنَاقَتِهِof his camelلِيَقَعَto fallفِيintoوَادٍa valleyهُنَاكَthere.

And in the Battle of Tabuk, the Prophet called them to arms as he did with others, so some of them went out with him, and some of them stayed behind, and among those who went out with him were some who intended to kill him on the road, intending to loosen the belt of his camel to make it fall into a valley there.

فَجَاءَهُThen came to himالوَحْيُthe revelation،,فَأَسَرَّand he whisperedإِلَىtoحُذَيْفَةَHudhayfahأَسْمَاءَهُمْtheir names,,وَلِذَلِكَand because of thatيُقَالُit is said::هُوَhe isصَاحِبُthe possessor ofالسَّرِّthe secretالَّذِيthatلَاno oneيَعْلَمُهُknows itغَيْرُهُother than him,,كَمَاasثَبَتَit was confirmedذَلِكَthatفِيin«الصَّحِيحِ»the Sahih,وَمَعَand withهَذَاthisفَفِيin the apparentتَجْرِيthe rules applyعَلَيْهُمْto themأَحْكَامٌthe rulingsأَهْلِof the peopleالإِيمَانِof faith.

Then the revelation came to him, and he whispered to Hudhayfah their names, and because of that, it is said: he is the possessor of the secret that no one knows but him, as was confirmed in the Sahih, and with this, the rules of the people of faith apply to them.

وَبِهَذَاAnd with thisيَظْهَرُappearsالْجَوَابُthe answerعَنْtoشُبُهَاتٍthe doubtsكَثِيرَةٍmanyتُوَرَدُpresentedفِيinهَذَاthisالْمَقَامِsituation,,فَإِنَّfor verilyكَثِيرًاmanyمِنَofالمُتَأَخِّرِينَthe later generationsمَاwhatبَقِيَremainsفِيinالْمُظَاهِرِينَthe manifestationsلِلْإِسْلَامِof Islamعِندَهُمwith themإِلَّاexceptعَدْلٍa just personأَوْorفَاسِقٍa rebellious personوَأَعْرَضُواand they turned awayعَنْfromحُكْمِthe judgmentsالْمُنَافِقِينَof the hypocrites.وَالْمُنَافِقُونَAnd hypocritesمَاhaveزَالُواnot ceasedوَلَاand they do notيَزَالُونَceaseإِلَىtoيَوْمِthe Dayالْقِيَامَةِof Resurrection.،,وَالنِّفَاقُand hypocrisyشُعَبٌis a branchكَثِيرَةٌmany.وَقَدْAnd theyكَانَwereالْصَّحَابَةُthe companionsيَخَافُونَafraidالنِّفَاقَof hypocrisyعَلَىonأَنْفُسِهِمthemselves.

And with this, the answer to many doubts presented in this situation appears, for verily, many of the later generations have remained in the manifestations of Islam among them except for a just person or a rebellious person and they turned away from the judgments of the hypocrites. And the hypocrites have not ceased and they do not cease until the Day of Resurrection, and hypocrisy is a branch of many. And they were afraid of hypocrisy on themselves.

فَفِيSo inالصَّحِيحَيْنِthe two Sahihsعَنْaboutالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetقَالَsaid::آيَةُA signالْمُنَافِقِof the hypocriteثَلاَثٌthree::إِذَاIfحَدَّثَhe talksكَذَبَhe lies,,وَإِذَاand ifوَعَدَhe promisesأَخْلَفَhe breaks,,وَإِذَاand ifاِئْتُمِنَhe is trustedخَانَhe betrays.

So in the two Sahihs, about the Prophet ﷺ, he said: ‘A sign of the hypocrite is three: if he talks, he lies; and if he promises, he breaks; and if he is trusted, he betrays.’

وَفِيAnd inالصَّحِيحَيْنِthe two Sahihsعَنْaboutعَبْدِ اللّهِAbdullahبْنِthe son ofعَمْرٍوAmrعَنْaboutالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetأَنَّهُthat heقَالَsaid::«أَرْبَعٌ‘Fourمِنْfromكُنَّwhoever hasفِيهِin himكَانَwasنَافِقًاa hypocriteخَالِصًاpure.وَمَنْAnd whoeverكَانَتْhasفِيهِin himشُعْبَةٌa branch ofمِنْهَاthemكَانَتْhasفِيهِin himشُعْبَةٌa branchمِنَofالنِّفَاقِhypocrisyحَتَّىuntilيَدَعَهَاhe leaves it: 'If::إِذَاIfحَدَّثَhe talksكَذَبَhe lies,,وَإِذَاand ifاِئْتُمِنَhe is trustedخَانَhe betrays,,وَإِذَاand ifعَاهَدَhe makes a pactغَدَرَhe betrays,,,وَإِذَاand ifخَاصَمَhe disputesفَجَرَhe acts wickedly.

And in the two Sahihs, about Abdullah ibn Amr, about the Prophet ﷺ, that he said: ‘Four traits belong to whoever has them: he is a hypocrite in the purest form; and whoever has one of them has one aspect of hypocrisy until he leaves it: If he talks, he lies; and if he is trusted, he betrays; and if he makes a pact, he betrays; and if he disputes, he acts wickedly.’

وَكَانَAnd he wasالنَّبِيُّthe Prophetأَوَّلًاat firstيُصَلِّيhe prayedعَلَيْهِمupon themوَيَسْتَغْفِرُand ask forgivenessلَهُمْfor them,,حَتَّىuntilنَهَىhe was prohibitedاللَّهُAllahعَنْذَلِكَthat,,فَقَالَso he said::﴿﴿وَلَاAnd do notتُصَلِّيprayعَلَىforأَحَدٍanyoneمِّنْهُمْfrom themمَاتَwho diedأَبَدًاever.وَلَاAnd do notتَقُمْstandعَلَىatقَبْرِهِhis grave.

And the Prophet ﷺ was at first praying upon them and asking forgiveness for them until Allah prohibited him from that, so He said: ‘And do not pray for anyone of them who dies ever, and do not stand at his grave.’
