يَزِيدُYazidبْنِson ofزُرَيْعٍZuri'aوَيَحْيَىand Yahyaبْنِson ofسَعِيدٍSaeedقَالَاthey saidحَدَّثَنَاnarrated to usعَوْفٌ،Awf,حَدَّثَنِيhe narrated to meعُقْبَةُUqbaبْنِson ofعَبْدِ اللَّهَAbdullahالمُزَنْيِthe Muzaniقَالَhe saidيَزِيدُYazidفِيinحَدِيثِهِhis narrationفِيinمَسْجِدِthe mosqueالْبَصْرَةِof Basraحَدَّثَنِيhe narrated to meرَجُلٌa manقَدْwho hasسَمَّاهُ،named him,وَانْسِيَand forgotعَوْفٌAwfاسْمَهُhis nameقَالَ:he said:كُنتُI wasبِالْمَدِينَةِin the cityفِيinمَسْجِدٍthe mosqueفِيهِin itعُمَرُOmarبْنِson ofالْخَطَّابِ،Al-Khattab,فَقَالَhe saidلِبَعْضِto someجُلَسَائِهِof his companions:كَيْفَhowسَمِعْتُمْdid you hearرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِ ﷺof Allah (peace be upon him)يَقُولُsayingفِيinالإِسْلَامِ؟Islam?فَقَالَ:So he said:سَمِعْتُهُI heard himيَقُولُ:saying:الإِسْلَامُIslamبَدَأَbeganجِذْعًا،as a young tree,ثُمَّthenثُنِيًّا،matured,ثُمَّthenرُبَاعِيًّا،grew four branches,ثُمَّthenسُدَاسِيًّا،grew six branches,ثُمَّthenبَازِلًا»،grew into a full tree.فَقَالَSo he said:فَمَاWhatبَعْدَcomes afterالْبَزْلِfull growthإِلَّاexceptالنُّقْصَانِdecline.كَذَاThusذَكَرَهُhe mentioned itأَبُوAbuيَعْلَىYalaفِيinمُسندِthe Musnadعُمَرَof Omarوَفِيand inمُسندِthe Musnadهَذَاthisالصَّحَابِيِّcompanionالْمُبْهَمِthe ambiguous oneذَكَرَهُhe mentioned itأَوْلَىit is more fitting.قَالَHe said:أَبُوAbuسُلَيْمَانَSulaimanمَنْWhoeverأَحْسَنَdoes goodفِيat nightكُوفئَwill be rewardedفِيinنَهَارِهِ،his daytime,وَمَنْand whoeverأَحْسَنَdoes goodفِيinنَهَارِهِhis daytimeكُوفئَwill be rewardedفِيinلَيْلَةِهِhis nightقَالَsaidالشَّيْخُthe Sheikh(۱).وَالزِّيَادَةُAnd the increaseقَدْhasنُطِقَbeen statedبِهَاby itالْقُرْآنُthe Quranفِيinعِدَّةٍseveralآيَاتٍversesكَقَوْلِهِlike His sayingتَعَالَى:the Exalted:﴿إِنَّمَاIndeed,الْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersالَّذِينَwhoإِذَاwhenذُكِرَتِAllah is mentioned,اللَّهُAllahوَجِلَتْand their hearts tremble,قُلُوبُهُمْtheir heartsوَإِذَاand whenتُلِيَتْit is recitedعَلَيْهِمْto themوَآيَاتُهُHis versesزَادَتْهُمْit adds to themإِيمَانًا﴾faith.[الْأَنْفَالِ: ٢][Al-Anfal: 2]وَهَذِهِAnd thisزِيَادَةٌincreaseإِذَاwhenتُلِيَتْit is recitedعَلَيْهِمْto themالْآيَاتُthe versesأَيَّanyوَقْتٍtimeتُلِيَتْit is recitedلَيْسَتْis notهِيَit isتَصْدِيقَهُمْtheir beliefبِهَاin itعِندَat theالنُّزُولِ،time of revelation,وَهَذَاand thisأَمْرٌmatterيَجِدُهُa believer findsإِذَاwhenتُلِيَتْit is recitedعَلَيْهِupon himالْآيَاتُthe versesزَادَتْincreasesفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartبِفَهْمٍby understandingالْقُرْآنِthe Quranوَمَعْرِفَةٍand knowledgeمَعَانِيَهُof its meaningsمِنْfromعِلْمٍthe knowledgeالإِيمَانِof faithمَاwhatلَمْwas notيَكُنْthat he hadحَتَّىuntilكَأَنَّهُit seemed as ifلَمْhe did notيَسْمَعْhearالْآيَةَthe verseإِلَّاexceptحِينََئِذٍ،at that time,وَيَحْصُلُand he obtainsفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartمِنَofالرَّغْبَةِdesireفِيforالْخَيْرِgoodوَالرَّهْبَةِand fearمِنَfromالشَّرِّevilمَاwhatلَمْdid notيَكُنْexistفَزَادَتْso he increasesعِلْمَهُhis knowledgeبِاللَّهِof Allahوَمَحَبَّتَهُand his loveلِطَاعَتِهِ،for His obedience,وَهَذَاand thisزِيَادَةٌincreaseالإِيمَانِ،of faith,وَقَالَand He saidتَعَالَى:the Exalted:﴿الَّذِينَThose whoقَالَsaidلَهُمُto themالنَّاسُthe peopleإِنَّIndeed,النَّاسَthe peopleقَدْhaveجَمَعُواgatheredلَكُمْagainst youفَاخْشَوْهُمْso fear them.فَزَادَهُمْSo it increased themإِيمَانًاin faithوَقَالُواand they saidحَسْبُنَاSufficient for usاللَّهُis Allahوَنِعْمَand He is the bestالْوَكِيلُdisposer of affairs.[آلِ عِمْرَانَ][Aal-Imran]فَهَذِهِSo thisالزِّيَادَةُincreaseعِندَwhenتَخْوِيفِهِمthey were warnedبِالْعَدُوِّwith the enemyلَمْnotتَكُنْbeعِندَatآيَةٍa verseنَزَلَتْthat was revealedفَازْدَادُواand they increasedيَقِينًin certaintyوَتَوَكُّلًاand in relianceعَلَىonاللَّهِ،Allah,وَثَبَاتًاand steadfastnessعَلَىinالْجِهَادِjihadوَتَوْحِيدًاand monotheism.بِأَنْTo fear thatلَاthey do notيَخَافُواfearالْمَخْلُوقَ،the creation,بَلْbutيَخَافُونَfear onlyالْخَالِقَthe Creatorوَحْدَهُ،alone,وَقَالَand He saidتَعَالَى:the Exalted:﴿وَإِذَاAnd whenمَاaأُنزِلَتْsurah is revealed,سُورَةٌsome of themفَمِنْهُمfrom themمَّنwho sayيَقُولُWhich one of youأَيُّكُمْthis has increased himزَادَتْهُin faith?هَذِهِThose who believedإِيمَانًاit increased them in faithفَأَمَّاand as for theالَّذِينَthose whoءَامَنُواbelievedفَزَادَتْهُمْit increased themإِيمَانًاin faithوَهُمْand theyيَسْتَبْشِرُونَrejoice.وَأَمَّاBut as forالَّذِينَthose whoفِيinقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsمَّرَضٌis sickness,فَزَادَتْهُمْit increased themرِجْسًاin filthإِلَىuponرِجْسِهِمْ)their filth.[التوبة][At-Tawbah]وَهَذِهِAnd this(۱)(1)مَاWhatبَيْنَis betweenمَعْكُوفَتَيْنِthe bracketsمِنَfromالصَّفْحَةِthe page(۱۷۸)(178)حَتَّىup toهُنَاhereزِيَادَةٌincreaseمِنَis an additionالْمَخْطُوطَةِthe manuscriptالْخَاصَّةِspecificبِالْمَكْتَبِto the Islamic officeالإِسْلَامِيَّ،not inلَيْسَتْthe copiesفِيinالنُّسَخِthe preceding editionsالَّتِيthatبَيْنَare withأَيْدِينَاusفِيinالطَّبَعَاتِthe editionsالسَّابِقَة.previous.
Yazid ibn Zuri'a and Yahya ibn Sa'id said, 'Awf narrated to us, 'Uqba ibn Abdullah Al-Muzani narrated to me. Yazid said in his narration in the mosque of Basra: 'A man named him, but Awf forgot his name. He said: 'I was in the city in a mosque where Umar ibn Al-Khattab was present. He said to some of his companions: 'How did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about Islam?' He said: 'I heard him say: 'Islam started as a young tree, then matured, then grew four branches, then became six, then a full tree.' Umar said: 'What comes after being a full tree except for decline.' Thus, Abu Yala mentioned it in the Musnad of Umar and in the Musnad of this ambiguous companion it is more fitting....
