And the origin of every good in this world and the Hereafter is the fear of Allah.
وَيَدُلُّAnd it indicatesعَلَىtheذَلِكَthatقَوْلُهُHis sayingتَعَالَى:the Exalted:
And this is indicated by His saying, the Exalted:
﴿وَلَمَّاAnd whenسَكَتَhe became silentعَنِaboutمُوسَىٰMosesالْغَضَبُthe angerأَخَذَhe tookالْأَلْوَاحَthe tabletsوَفِيand inنُسْخَتِهَاits copyهُدًىguidanceوَرَحْمَةٌand mercyلِلَّذِينَfor those whoهُمْthey areلِرَبِّهِمْto their Lordيَرْهَبُونَthey fear.
"And when the anger of Moses was calmed, he took the tablets, and in their copy was guidance and mercy for those who fear their Lord." (Al-A'raf).
فَأَخْبَرَSo it is informedأَنَّthatالْهُدَىthe guidanceوَالرَّحْمَةَand mercyلِلَّذِينَfor those whoيَرْهَبُونَfear Allah.
It informs that guidance and mercy are for those who fear Allah.
قَالَIbn Mujahid saidمُجَاهِدٌMujahidوَإِبْرَاهِيمُand Ibrahimهُوَis the manيُرِيدُwho wantsأَنْtoيَذْنِبَcommit sinالذَّنْبَthe sinفَيَذْكُرَthen remembersمَقَامَthe statusاللَّهِof Allahفَيَدَعَthen he leavesالذَّنْبَ.the sin.
Mujahid and Ibrahim said that a man who wants to commit a sin remembers the status of Allah, and then he refrains from the sin.

It is narrated by Ibn Abu Dunya from Ibn al-Ja'd from Shu'bah from Mansur, from them in His saying, the Exalted:
﴿وَلِمَنْ"And for whoeverخَافَfearsمَقَامَthe statusرَبِّهِof his Lordجَنَّتَانِ﴾there are two gardens."
"And for whoever fears the status of his Lord, there are two gardens." (Ar-Rahman).
وَهَؤُلَاءِAnd theseهُمْareأَهْلُthe people ofالْفَلَاحِsuccessالْمَذْكُورُونَmentionedفِيinقَوْلِهِHis sayingتَعَالَى:the Exalted:
And these are the people of success mentioned in His saying, the Exalted:
أَوَلَتَبِكَ"Are they not on guidance?عَلَىonهُدًىguidanceمِّنfromرَّبِّهِمْtheir Lordوَأَوَلَيْكَand they areهُمُthey areالْمُفْلِحُونَ﴾the successful."
"Are they not on guidance from their Lord? And they are the successful." (Al-Baqarah).
وَهُمْThey areالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersوَهُمْand they areالْمُتَّقُونَthe piousالْمَذْكُورُونَmentionedفِيinقَوْلِهِHis sayingتَعَالَى:the Exalted:
They are the believers and they are the pious mentioned in His saying, the Exalted:
﴿الم"Alif, Lam, Meem,ذَٰلِكَThisالْكِتَابُBookلَاNoرَيْبَdoubtفِيهِin itهُدًىguidanceلِلْمُتَّقِينَ﴾for the pious."
"Alif, Lam, Meem. This is the Book; there is no doubt in it, a guidance for the pious." (Al-Baqarah).
كَمَاAsقَالَHe saidفِيinآيَةِthe verseالْبِرِّ:of righteousness:أُولَـٰئِكَThoseالَّذِينَwhoصَدَقُواare trueوَأُوْلَـٰئِكَand they areهُمُthey areالْمُتَّقُونَ﴾the pious."
As He said in the verse of righteousness: "Those who are true, and they are the pious." (Al-Baqarah: 177).
وَهَؤُلَاءِAnd theseهُمْareالْمُتَّبِعُونَthe followersلِلْكِتَابِ،of the Book,كَمَاasفِيinقَوْلِهِHis sayingتَعَالَى:the Exalted:
And these are the followers of the Book, as mentioned in His saying, the Exalted:
﴿فَمَنِ"So whoeverاتَّبَعَfollowsهُدَايَMy guidanceفَلَاthen do notيَضِلُّmisleadوَلَاand notيَشْقَى)despair."
"So whoever follows My guidance will not go astray and will not despair." (Ta-Ha: 123).
وَإِذَاAnd ifلَمْnotيَضِلَّhe misleadsفَهُوَthen he isمُتَّبِعٌa followerمُهْتَدٍ،guided,وَإِذَاand ifلَمْnotيَشْقَdespairفَهُوَhe isمَرْحُومٌ،merciful,
And if he does not mislead, then he is a guided follower, and if he does not despair, he is one who receives mercy.
وَهَؤُلَاءِAnd theseهُمْareأَهْلُthe people ofالصِّرَاطِthe straight pathالْمُسْتَقِيمِthe straightالَّذِينَwhoأَنْعَمَbestowedاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِمْupon themمِنَofالنَّبِيِّينَthe prophetsوَالصِّدِّيقِينَand the truthfulوَالشُّهَدَاءِand the martyrsوَالصَّالِحِينَand the righteousغَيْرَnotالْمَغْضُوبِthose who are angeredعَلَيْهِمْupon themوَلَاand notالضَّالِّينَthe misguided.
And these are the people of the straight path, those whom Allah has bestowed upon from the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, not those who are angered upon them, nor the misguided.
فَإِنَّSo ifأَهْلُthe people ofالرَّحْمَةِmercyلَيْسُواare notمَغْضُوبًاthose who are angeredعَلَيْهِمْ،upon them,وَأَهْلُand the people ofالْهُدَىguidanceلَيْسُواare notضَالِّينَmisguided.
So if the people of mercy are not those who are angered upon them, and the people of guidance are not misguided.
فَتَبَيَّنَSo it is clearأَنَّthatأَهْلَthe people ofرَهَبَةِthe fear ofاللَّهِAllahيَكُونُونَareمُتَّقِينَthe piousاللَّهَ،of Allah,مُسْتَحِقِّينَworthy ofلِجَنَّتِهِHis Paradiseبِلاwithoutعَذَابٍpunishmentوَهَؤُلَاءِand theseهُمْareالَّذِينَthose whoآتَوْاcameبِالإِيمَانِwith faithالْوَاجِبِ.the obligatory.
So it is clear that the people who fear Allah are pious, worthy of His Paradise without punishment, and these are those who have fulfilled the obligatory faith.
وَمِمَّاAnd from whatيَدُلُّindicatesعَلَىtoهَذَاthisالْمَعْنَىmeaningقَوْلُهُis His sayingتَعَالَى:the Exalted:
And from what indicates this meaning is His saying, the Exalted:
﴿إِنَّمَا"Indeed,يَخْشَىfearاللَّهَAllahمِنْfromعِبَادِهِHis servantsالْعُلَمَاءُ)the learned."
"Indeed, the learned are the only ones who truly fear Allah." (Fatir: 28).
وَالْمَعْنَىAnd the meaningأَنَّهُis thatلَاnoيَخْشَاهfears Himإِلَّاexceptعَالِمٌ،the learned,
And the meaning is that no one fears Him except the learned.
فَقَدْFor He hasأَخْبَرَinformedاللَّهُAllahأَنَّthatكُلَّeveryمَنْwhoخَشِيَfearsاللَّهَAllahفَهُوَisعَالِمٌlearned,
For Allah has informed that everyone who fears Allah is learned,
كَمَاasقَالَHe saidفِيinالْآيَةِthe verseالْأُخْرَى:another:﴿أَمَنْ"Is he whoهُوَisفَانِتٌis inوَانَاءِthe nightاللَّيْلِstandingسَاجِدًاin prostrationوَاقَامَاand standingيَحْذَرُfearingالْآخِرَةَthe Hereafterوَيَرْجُواand hopesرَحْمَةَfor the mercyرَبِّهِof his LordقُلْSay,هَلْis itيَسْتَوِيequalالَّذِينَthose whoيَعْلَمُونَknowوَالَّذِينَand those whoلَاdo notيَعْلَمُونَ﴾know?"
As He said in another verse: "Is he who is in worship at night and fears the Hereafter, and hopes for the mercy of his Lord, equal with those who do not know?" (Az-Zumar: 9).
وَالْخَشْيَةُAnd fearأَبَدًاalwaysمُتَضَمِّنَةٌcontainsلِلرَّجَاءِ،hope,وَلَوْلَاand if notذَلِكَthatلَكَانَتْwould beقُنُوطًا،despairing,
And fear always contains hope; otherwise, it would lead to despair.
كَمَاAsأَنَّhopeيَسْتَلْزِمُnecessitatesالْخَوْفَ،fear,وَلَوْلَاand if notذَٰلِكَthatلَكَانَتْit would beأَمْنًا،security,
As hope necessitates fear; otherwise, it would lead to security.
فَأَهْلُSo the people ofالْخَوْفِfear ofاللَّهِAllahوَالْرَّجَاءِand hope for Himلَهُمُare the people ofهُمْthey areأَهْلُthe people ofالْعِلْمِknowledgeالَّذِينَwhoمَدَحَهُمْpraise themاللَّهُ .Allah.
So the people of fear of Allah and hope are the people of knowledge whom Allah praises.
