النَّبِيُّThe Prophetﷺ(peace be upon him)فِيinعِدَّةٍseveralأَحَادِيثَhadithsأَنَّthatمَنْwhoسُرَّتْهُwas pleased withحَسَنَاتِهِhis good deedsوَسَاءَتْهُand was displeased byسَيِّئَاتِهِhis bad deedsفَهُوَhe isمُؤْمِنٌa believer
The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned in several hadiths that whoever is pleased with his good deeds and displeased with his bad deeds is a believer.
فَهَذَاSo thisيُحِبُّlovesالْحَسَنَةَthe good deedوَيَفْرَحُand rejoicesبِهَذَاin itوَيُبْغِضُand hatesالسَّيِّئَةَthe bad deedوَيَسُوءُهُand he is saddened byفِعْلَهَاits commissionوَإِنْeven ifفَعَلَهَاhe commits itبِشَهْوَةٍwith overwhelming desireغَالِبَةٍdominant.
So this person loves the good deed and rejoices in it, hates the bad deed and is saddened by its commission, even if he commits it with overwhelming desire.
وَهَذَاThisالْحُبُّloveوَالْبُغْضُand hatredمِنْis part ofخَصَائِصِthe characteristics ofالإيمَانِfaith.
This love and hatred are characteristics of faith.
وَمَعْلُومٌAnd it is knownأَنَّthatالزَّانِيَthe fornicatorحِينَwhenيَزْنِيhe commits adulteryإِنَّمَاhe onlyيَزْنِيcommits adulteryلِحُبٍّfor loveفِيinنَفْسِهِhimselfلِذَلِكَfor thatالْفِعْلِaction.
And it is known that when the fornicator commits adultery, he only does so for the love of that action.
فَلَوْIfقَامَhe had in his heartبِقَلْبِهِin his heartخَشْيَةِthe fear ofاللَّهِGodالَّتِيwhichتَقْهَرُovercomesالشَّهْوَةَdesireأَوْorحُبِّloveاللَّهِGodالَّذِيthatيَغْلِبُهَاoverpowers it,لَمْ, he would notيَزْنِcommit adultery.
If he had the fear of God in his heart which overpowers desire, or the love of God that overcomes it, he would not commit adultery.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonقَالَhe saidتَعَالَىthe Most HighعَنْaboutيُوسُفَJosephعَلَيْهِpeace be upon himالسَّلاَمُthat: كَذَٰلِكَThusلِنَصْرِفَWe diverted awayعَنْهُfrom himالسُّوءَevilوَالْفَحْشَاءِand lewdnessإِنَّهُIndeed, heمِنْis one ofعِبَادِنَاOur devoted servantsالْمُخْلَصِينَthe sincere.
And for this reason, the Most High said about Joseph (peace be upon him): 'Thus We diverted away the evil and lewdness from him. Indeed, he is one of Our devoted servants, the sincere.'
فَمَنْSo whoeverكَانَwasمُخْلِصًاsincereلِلَّهِto Godحَقًّاin truthالإِخْلاَصِsincerityلَمْwould notيَزْنِcommit adultery.
So whoever is truly sincere to God would not commit adultery.
وَإِنَّمَاAnd indeedيَزْنِيhe commits adulteryلِكَوْنِهِfor his lack ofخُلُوِّهِbeing freeعَنْfromذَٰلِكَthat.
And indeed, he commits adultery due to his lack of being free from that.
وَهَذَاAnd thisهُوَisالإِيمَانُthe faithالَّذِيthatيُنْزَعُis taken awayمِنْهُfrom him.
And this is the faith that is taken away from him.
لَمْnotيُنْزَعْtaken awayمِنْهُfrom himنَفْسَthe essence ofالتَّصْدِيقِbelief.
The essence of belief is not taken away from him.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonقِيلَit is saidهُوَhe isمُسْلِمٌMuslimوَلَيْسَbut notبِمُؤْمِنٍa believer.
And for this reason, it is said: he is a Muslim but not a believer.
فَإِنَّForالْمُسْلِمَthe Muslimالْمُسْتَحِقَّwho deservesلِلثَّوَابِrewardلَابُدَّmustأَنْto beيَكُونَbeمُصَدِّقًاa believer.وَإِلَّاOtherwiseكَانَhe isمُنَافِقًاa hypocrite.
For the Muslim who deserves reward must be a believer, otherwise he is a hypocrite.
لَكِنَّButلَيْسَnotكُلَّeveryمَنْwhoصَدَّقَbelievedقَامَhas inبِقَلْبِهِhis heartمِنْofالْأَحْوَالِthe statesالإيمَانِيَّةِof faithالْوَاجِبَةِmandatoryمَثَلَlikeكَمَالِthe perfection ofمَحَبَّةِlove ofاللَّهِGodوَرَسُولِهِand His Messenger.
But not every one who believes has in their heart the mandatory states of faith such as the perfection of the love of God and His Messenger.
وَمَثَلَAnd likeخَشْيَةِthe fear ofاللَّهِGodوَالْإِخْلَاصِand sincerityلَهُto Himفِيinالْأَعْمَالِthe actionsوَالتَّوَكُّلِand relianceعَلَيْهِon Him.
And like the fear of God and sincerity to Him in actions and reliance on Him.
بَلْRatherيَكُونَa person isالرَّجُلُthe manمُصَدِّقًاa believerبِمَاin whatجَاءَcameبِهِwith itالرَّسُولُthe Messengerوَهُوَand he isمَعَwithذَٰلِكَthatيُرَائِيshowing offبِأَعْمَالِهِin his actions.
Rather, a person can be a believer in what the Messenger brought while at the same time showing off in his deeds.
وَيَكُونُAnd he can beأَهْلُهُhis familyوَمَالُهُand wealthأَحَبُّdearerإِلَيْهِto himمِنْthanاللَّهِGodوَرَسُولِهِand His Messengerوَالْجِهَادِand struggleفِيinسَبِيلِهِHis cause.
And he can love his family and wealth more than God, His Messenger, and struggling in His cause.
وَقَدْAnd indeedخُوطِبَwere addressedبِهَذَاwith thisالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersفِيinآخِرِthe lastالأَمْرِof the matterفِيinسُورَةِthe chapter ofبَرَاءَةِRepentance.
And indeed, the believers were addressed with this in the final part of the chapter of Repentance.
فَقِيلَIt was saidلَهُمْto themإِنَّthat ifكَانَwasآبَاؤُكُمْyour fathersوَandأَبْنَاؤُكُمْyour sonsوَإِخْوَانُكُمْand your brothersوَأَزْوَاجُكُمْand your wivesوَعَشِيرَتُكُمْand your tribeوَأَمْوَالُand your possessionsاقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَاthat you have earnedوَتَجَارَةٌand tradeتَخْشَوْنَthat you fearكَسَادَهَاits declineوَمَسَاكِنُand dwellingsتَرْضَوْنَهَاthat you are pleased withأَحَبُّdearerإِلَيْكُمْto youمِنْthanاللَّهِGodوَرَسُولِهِand His Messengerوَالْجِهَادِand struggleفِيinسَبِيلِهِHis cause.
It was said to them: 'If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your tribe, and the wealth you have earned, and the trade that you fear its decline, and the houses you are pleased with, are more beloved to you than God, His Messenger, and struggling in His cause, then wait until Allah brings His command; and Allah does not guide the sinful people.'
وَمَعْلُومٌAnd it is well knownأَنَّthatكَثِيرًاmanyمِنَofالْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsأَوْorأَكْثَرَهُمْmost of themبِهَذِهِwith thisالصِّفَةِattribute.
And it is well known that many of the Muslims, or most of them, have this attribute.
وَقَدْAnd indeedثَبَتَit has been establishedأَنَّهُthatلَاnotيَكُونَa person isالرَّجُلُa manمُؤْمِنًاa believerحَتَّىuntilيَكُونَhe isاللَّهُGodوَرَسُولُهُand His Messengerأَحَبُّbelovedإِلَيْهِto himمِمَّاthan whatسِوَاهُمَاis outside them.
And indeed, it has been established that a man is not a believer until God and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else.
وَإِنَّمَاAnd indeedالْمُؤْمِنُthe believerمَنْis the one whoلَمْdoes notيَرْتَبِdoubt,وَجَاهَدَand strivesبِمَالِهِwith his wealthوَنَفْسِهِand himselfفِيinسَبِيلِthe way ofاللَّهِGod.
And indeed, the believer is one who does not doubt and strives with his wealth and himself in the way of God.
فَمَنْWhoeverلَمْdoes notتَقْمَfulfillبِقَلْبِهin his heartالأَحْوَالِthe statesالْوَاجِبَةِthat are mandatoryفَهُوَhe isالَّذِيthe one whoنَفَىhas deniedعَنْهُfrom himالرَّسُولَthe Messengerالإِيمَانَfaithوَإِنْand ifكَانَhe hasمَعَهُwith himالتَّصْدِيقَbelief.
Whoever does not fulfill the mandatory states of faith in his heart, he is the one from whom the Messenger has denied the faith, even if he has the belief.
وَالْتَّصْدِيقُAnd beliefمِنْis part ofالإِيمَانِfaithوَلَاand it is notبِدَbut
And belief is part of faith and it cannot exist without it.
أَنْthatيَكُونَthere should beمَعَwithالتَّصْدِيقِthe beliefشَيْءٌsomethingمِنَofحُبِّthe love ofاللَّهِGodوَخَشْيَتِهِand fear of Him.وَإِلَّاOtherwiseفَالْتَّصْدِيقُthe beliefالَّذِيthatلَاdoes notيَكُونَhaveمَعَهُwith itشَيْءٌanythingمِنَofذَٰلِكَthat.
That there should be with the belief something of the love of God and fear of Him; otherwise, the belief that does not contain something of that is not true.
