And this is much in the speech of the predecessors; they explain that the heart may contain.

Faith and hypocrisy, and the Book and the Sunnah indicate that.

فَإِنَّFor indeedالنَّبِيَّthe Prophet(peace be upon him)ذَكَرَmentionedشُعَبَthe branchesالإِيمَانِof faithوَذَكَرَand mentionedشُعَبَthe branchesالنِّفَاقِof hypocrisy

For indeed, the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned the branches of faith and mentioned the branches of hypocrisy.

وَقَالَAnd he saidمَنْwhoeverكَانَتْhas itفِيَّهِin himشُعْبَةٌa branchمِنْهُنَّof themكَانَتْthere isفِيَّهِin himشُعْبَةٌa branchمِنَofالنِّفَاقِhypocrisyحَتَّىuntilيَدَعَهَاabandon it

And he said: whoever has a branch of them in him, he has a branch of hypocrisy until he abandons it.

وَتِلْكَAnd thatالشُّعْبَةُbranchقَدْmayيَكُونَbeمَعَهَاwith itكَثِيرٌmuchمِنْofشُعَبِthe branchesالإِيمَانِof faith

And that branch may be accompanied by much of the branches of faith.

وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisقَالَhe saidيَخْرُجُhe will exitمِنَfromالنَّارِthe Fireمَنْwhoeverكَانَhasفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartمِثْقَالٌthe weightذَرَّةٍof an atomمِنْofإِيمَانٍfaith

And for this, he said: he will exit from the Fire whoever has in his heart the weight of an atom of faith.

فَعُلِمَSo it is knownأَنَّthatمَنْwhoeverكَانَhasمَعَهُwith himمِنَofالإِيمَانِfaithأَقَلُّthe leastالقَلِيلِamount

So it is known that whoever has the least amount of faith.

لَمْnotيَخْلُدْeternalفِيinالنَّارِthe Fireوَإِنْand ifكَانَhe hasمَعَهُwith himكَثِيرٌmuchمِنَofالنِّفَاقِhypocrisy

will not be eternal in the Fire, even if he has much hypocrisy with him.

فَهُوَHe isيُعَذَّبُpunishedفِيinالنَّارِthe Fireعَلَىaccording toقَدْرِthe extentمَاwhatمَعَهُhe hasمِنْofذَلِكَthat

He is punished in the fire according to the extent of what he has of that.

ثُمَّThenيَخْرُجُhe will exitمِنَfromالنَّارِthe Fire

Then he will exit from the Fire.

وَعَلَىAnd onهَذَاthisفَقَوْلُهُhis sayingلِلْأَعْرَابِto the Bedouins

And on this, his saying to the Bedouins.

لَمْDid notتُؤْمِنُواyou believeوَلَكِنْbutقُلُواsayأَسْلَمْنَاwe have submittedوَلَمْand have notيَدْخُلenteredالإِيمَانُfaithفِيintoقُلُوبِكُمْyour hearts

Did not you believe, but say: we have submitted, and faith has not entered into your hearts.

نَفَىNegatedحَقِيقَةَthe realityدُخُولِof the entryالإِيمَانِof faithفِيintoقُلُوبِهِمْtheir hearts

He negated the reality of the entry of faith into their hearts.

وَذَٰلِكَAnd thatلَاdoes notيَمْنَعُpreventأَنْthatيَكُونَit isشُعْبَةًa branchمِنْهُof it

And that does not prevent that it may be a branch of it.

كَمَاAsنَفَاهُhe denied itعَنْaboutالزَّانِيthe adultererوَالسَّارِقِand the thiefوَمَنْand whoeverلَاdoes notيُحِبُّloveلِأَخِيهِfor his brotherمَاwhatيُحِبُّhe lovesلِنَفْسِهِfor himself

As he denied it regarding the adulterer and the thief and whoever does not love for his brother what he loves for himself.

وَمَنْand whoeverلَاdoes notيَأْمَنُfeel secureجَارَهُhis neighborبَوَائِقَهُhis evilsوَغَيْرَand other than that

And whoever does not feel secure from his neighbor's evils and other than that.

كَمَاAsتَقَدَّمَpreviouslyذَكَرَهُmentioned itفَإِنَّfor indeedفِيinالْقُرْآنِthe Quranوَالْحَدِيثِand the hadithمِمَّنْof those whoنُفِيَwere deniedعَنْهُfrom himالإِيمَانُfaithتُرِكَfor leavingبَعْضٍsomeالْوَاجِبَاتِof the obligationsشَيْءٌsomethingكَثِيرٌmuch

As previously mentioned, for indeed in the Quran and the hadith, there are many who were denied faith for leaving some of the obligations.

وَحِينََئِذٍAnd thenفَنَقُولُwe sayمَنْwhoeverقَالَsaidالسَّلَفُthe predecessorsأَسْلَمْنَاwe have submittedأَيthat isاسْتَسْلَمْنَاwe have submittedخَوْفاًout of fearمِنَofالسَّيفِthe sword

And then we say: whoever the predecessors said, "We have submitted," means that we have submitted out of fear of the sword.

وَقَوْلُAnd the sayingمَنْof whoeverقَالَsaidهُوَit isالْإِسْلَامُIslamالْجَمِيعُallصَحِيحٌis correct

And the saying of whoever said it is Islam, all is correct.

فَإِنَّFor indeedهَذَاthisإِنمَاis onlyأَرَادَintendedالدُّخُولَthe entryفِيintoالإِسْلَامِIslamوَالْإِسْلَامُand Islamالظَّاهِرُthe apparentيَدْخُلُentersفِيهِin itالمُنَافِقُونَthe hypocrites

For indeed, this only intended the entry into Islam, and the apparent Islam enters in it the hypocrites.

فَيَدْخُلُSo it entersفِيهِin itمَنْwhoeverكَانَhasفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartإِيمَانٌfaithوَنِفَاقٌand hypocrisy

So it enters whoever has in his heart faith and hypocrisy.

وَقَدْAnd indeedعُلِمَit is knownأَنَّهُthat itيَخْرُجُwill exitمِنَfromالنَّارِthe Fireمَنْwhoeverفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartمِثْقَالٌthe weightذَرَّةٌof an atomمِنْofإِيمَانٍfaith

And indeed it is known that whoever has in his heart the weight of an atom of faith will exit from the Fire.

بِخِلَافِUnlikeالْمُنَافِقِthe hypocriteالْمَحْضِpureالَّذِيwhoقَلْبَهُhis heartكُلَّهُallأَسْوَدُblack

Unlike the pure hypocrite whose heart is all black.

فَهَذَاThisهُوَisالَّذِيthe oneيَكُونُwho will beفِيinالدَّرَكَthe lowestالْأَسْفَلِdownمِنَfromالنَّارِthe Fire

This is the one who will be in the lowest of the Fire.

وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisكَانَwereالصَّحَابَةُthe companionsيَخْشَوْنَfearingالنِّفَاقَhypocrisyعَلَىforأَنْفُسِهِمْthemselvesوَلَمْand did notيَخَفْfearالتَّكذِيبَthe denialاللَّهَof Allahوَرَسُولِهِand His Messenger

And for this, the companions were fearing hypocrisy for themselves, and did not fear the denial of Allah and His Messenger.

فَإِنَّFor indeedالْمُؤْمِنَthe believerيَعْلَمُknowsمِنْofنَفْسِهِhimselfأَنَّهُthat heلَاdoes notيَكْذِبُlieاللَّهَAllahوَرَسُولَهُand His Messengerيَقِينًاcertainly

For indeed, the believer knows of himself that he certainly does not lie to Allah and His Messenger.

وَهَذَاAnd thisمُسْتَنَدٌis basedمِنْonقَالَthe one who saidأَنَاI amمُؤْمِنٌa believerحَقًّاtruly

And this is based on the one who said: I am a believer truly.

فَإِنَّهُFor heأَرَادَintendedبِذَلِكَby thatمَاwhatيَعْلَمُهُhe knowsمِنْfromنَفْسِهِhimselfمِنْofالتَّصْدِيقِthe confirmationالْجَازِمِcertainly

For he intended by that what he knows from himself of the certain confirmation.

وَلَكِنَّButالإِيمَانَfaithلَيْسَis notمَجَرَّدًاjustالتَّصْدِيقَthe confirmation

But faith is not just the confirmation.

بَلْRatherلَاthere is noبُدٌّmustمِنْofقَلْبِيَّةٍthe heartتَسْتَلْزِمُthat necessitatesأَعْمَالًاactionsظَاهِرَةًapparent

Rather, there must be a heartfelt intention that necessitates apparent actions.

كَمَاAsتَقَدَّمَpreviouslyفَحُبَّfor the loveاللَّهِof Allahوَرَسُولِهِand His Messengerمِنَofالإِيمَانِfaith

As previously mentioned, for the love of Allah and His Messenger is part of faith.

وَحُبُّAnd the loveمَاof whatأَمَرَHe commandedاللَّهُAllahبِهِby it

And the love of what Allah has commanded.

وَبُغْضُand hatredمَاof whatنَهَىHe forbadeعَنْهُfrom it

And hatred of what He has forbidden.

وَهَذَاAnd thisمِنَis fromأَخَصِّthe most specificالأُمُورِmattersبِالْإِيمَانِof faith

And this is among the most specific matters of faith.

وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisذَكَرَmentionedأَعْمَالًاthe actions

And for this, He has mentioned the actions.
