قَالُواThey saidيَأَيُّهَاOالْعَزِيزُexalted oneإِنَّindeedلَهُhe hasأَبًاfatherشَيْخًاoldكَبِيرًاgrand

They said, "O exalted one, indeed he has an old, aged father,"

فَخُذْso takeأَحَدَنَاone of usمَكَانَهُin his placeإِنَّاindeed weنَرَاكَsee youمِنَofالْمُحْسِنِينَthe doers of good

so take one of us in his place; indeed, we see you as one of the doers of good."

قَالَHe saidمَعَاذَprotectionاللَّهِof Allahأَنْthatنَأْخُذَwe takeإِلَّاexceptمَنْhim whomوَجَدْنَاwe foundمَتَاعَنَاour propertyعِنْدَهُwith him

He said, "Protection of Allah! That we should take except him with whom we found our property.

إِنَّاIndeed weإِذًاthenلَظَالِمُونَare wrongdoers

Indeed, we would then be wrongdoers."

وَهَكَذَاAnd thusبَقِيَremainedبَنْيَامِينُBenjaminعِنْدَwithيُوسُفَJoseph

And thus Benjamin remained with Joseph,

وَفَرِحَand rejoicedالْإِخْوَةُthe brothersجَمِيعًاall together

and the brothers rejoiced all together.

إِنَّIndeedيُوسُفَJosephكَانَwasوَحِيدًاaloneمُنْذُsinceزَمَنٍtimeطَوِيلٍlong

Indeed, Joseph had been alone for a long time,

لَاnotيَرَىseeingأَحَدًاanyone

not seeing anyone.

سَاقَSentاللَّهُAllahإِلَيْهِto himبَنْيَامِينَBenjamin

Allah sent Benjamin to him;

أَفَلَاwould he not thenيَحْبِسُهُkeep himعِنْدَهُwith him

would he not then keep him with him,

يَرَاهُsee himوَيُكَلِّمُهُand speak with him

see him, and speak with him?

وَهَلْAnd is itمِنَfromالظُّلْمِinjusticeأَنْthatيُقِيمَresidesأَخٌa brotherعِنْدَwithأَخِيهِhis brother

And is it from injustice that a brother resides with his brother?

أَبَدًاNeverأَبَدًاever

Never, ever!

٢١21--إِلَىToيَعْقُوبَJacob

21 - To Jacob

وَتَحَيَّرَAnd were perplexedالْإِخْوَةُthe brothersكَيْفَhowيَرْجِعُونَthey returnإِلَىtoأَبِيهِمْtheir father

And the brothers were perplexed how they would return to their father.

وَفَكَّرَAnd thoughtالْإِخْوَةُthe brothersمَاذَاwhatيَقُولُونَthey will sayلِأَبِيهِمْto their father

And the brothers thought about what they would say to their father.

وَقَدْAnd indeedفَجَعُوهُthey afflicted himأَمْسِyesterdayفِيconcerningيُوسُفَJoseph

And indeed they had afflicted him yesterday concerning Joseph;

أَفَيَفْجَعُونَهُwould they afflict himالْيَوْمَtodayفِيconcerningبَنْيَامِينَBenjamin

would they afflict him today concerning Benjamin?

أَمَّاAs forكَبِيرُهُمْtheir elder

As for their elder:

فَأَبَىhe refusedأَنْtoيَرْجِعَreturnإِلَىtoيَعْقُوبَJacobوَقَالَand saidلِإِخْوَتِهِto his brothers

he refused to return to Jacob and said to his brothers:

ارْجِعُواReturnإِلَىtoأَبِيكُمْyour fatherفَقُولُواand sayيَأَبَانَاO our fatherإِنَّindeedابْنَكَyour sonسَرَقَstole

"Return to your father and say, 'O our father, indeed your son stole,

وَمَاand notشَهِدْنَاwe witnessedإِلَّاexceptبِمَاby whatعَلِمْنَاwe knew

and we did not witness except what we knew,

وَمَاand notكُنَّاwe wereلِلْغَيْبِof the unseenحَافِظِينَguardians'

and we were not guardians of the unseen.'"

وَلَمَّاAnd whenسَمِعَheardيَعْقُوبُJacobالْقِصَّةَthe storyعَلِمَhe knewأَنَّthatلِلَّهِfor Allahيَدًاa handفِيinذَلِكَthat

And when Jacob heard the story, he knew that Allah had a purpose in that,

وَأَنَّand thatاللَّهَAllahيُمْْتَحِنُهُis testing him

and that Allah was testing him.

أَمْسِYesterdayفُجِعَhe was afflictedفِيconcerningيُوسُفَJosephوَالْيَوْمَand todayيُفْجَعُhe is afflictedفِيconcerningبَنْيَامِينَBenjamin

Yesterday he was afflicted concerning Joseph, and today he is afflicted concerning Benjamin.

إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahيَجْمَعُgathersبَيْنَهُمَاbetween them

Indeed, Allah will gather them together.
