وَثَالِثَةٌAnd a third,وَرَابِعَةٌand a fourth,وَخَامِسَةٌand a fifth,وَلَكِنَّbutالطِّفْلَthe childيَبْكِيcriesوَيَأْبَى!and refuses!

And a third, and a fourth, and a fifth, but the child cries and refuses!

عَجَباً!How strange!لِمَاذَاWhyلَاdoes notيَرْتَضِعُsuckleالطِّفْلُ،the child,لِأَيِّfor whatشَيْءٍreasonيَبْكِي؟does he cry?

How strange! Why does the child not suckle, for what reason does he cry?

اجْتَهَدَتْStroveالْمَرَاضِعُthe wet nursesأَنْtoتُرْضِعَnurseالطِّفْلَthe childلِتُسِرَّto pleaseالْمَلِكَةَthe Queenوَتَنَالَand obtainمِنْهَاfrom herجَائِزَةً،a reward,وَلَكِنَّbutاللَّهَGodحَرَّمَforbadeعَلَيْهِto himالْمَرَاضِعَ.the wet nurses.

The wet nurses strove to nurse the child to please the Queen and obtain a reward from her, but God forbade the wet nurses to him.

وَأَصْبَحَAnd becameالطِّفْلُthe childحَدِيثَthe talk ofالْقَصْرِthe palaceوَشُغْلَand the concern ofالدَّارِ.the household.

And the child became the talk of the palace and the concern of the household.

هَلْHaveرَأَيْتِyou seenيَاOأُخْتِيmy sisterالطِّفْلَthe childالْجَدِيدَ؟new?

Have you seen, O my sister, the new child?

نَعَمْYesقَدْindeedرَأَيْتُهُ،I have seen him,طِفْلٌa childجَمِيلٌbeautifulجِدّاً.very.

Yes, I have indeed seen him, a very beautiful child.

وَلَكِنَّهُBut heطِفْلٌis a childغَرِيبٌstrange,لَيْسَnotكَالْأَطْفَالِ!like the children!

But he is a strange child, not like the children!

إِنَّهُHeلَاdoes notيَرْتَضِعُ!suckle!

He does not suckle!

وَإِذَاAnd ifأَخَذْتُهُI take him

And if I take him

إِنَّهُHeيَمُوتُ!dies!

He dies!

مُرْضِعٌA wet nurseيَبْكِيcriesوَيَأْبَىand refusesأَنْtoيَرْتَضِعَ،suckle,مِسْكِينٌpoor thing,كَيْفَhowيَعِيشُ؟does he live?

A wet nurse cries and refuses to suckle, poor thing, how does he live?

نَعَمْYes,قَدْindeedمَضَىhave passedعَلَيْهِupon himأَيَّامٌdaysوَلَمْand notيَرْتَضِعْ.has he suckled.

Yes, days have indeed passed upon him and he has not suckled.

١٠10وَلَيْسَ- فِيInحِجْرِthe lap ofأُمِّهِ.his mother.

10 - In his mother's lap.

وَقَالَتْAnd saidالْأُمُّthe motherالْحَنُونُtenderلِأُخْتِto the sister ofمُوسَى:Moses:

And the tender mother said to the sister of Moses:

إِذْهَبِيGoيَاOبِنْتِيmy daughterوَانْظُرِيand look atأَخَاكِyour brother

Go, my daughter, and look at your brother.

لَعَلَّهُPerhaps heحَيٌّ،is alive,إِنَّindeedاللَّهَGodقَدْhasوَعَدَنِيpromised meأَنَّهُthat Heيَرُدُّwill returnالطِّفْلَthe childإِلَيَّto meوَأَنَّهُand that Heيَحْفَظُهُ.will preserve him.

Perhaps he is alive, indeed God has promised me that He will return the child to me and that He will preserve him.

وَذَهَبَتْAnd wentأُخْتُthe sister ofمُوسَىMosesتَبْحَثُsearchingعَنْforأَخِيهَا،her brother,وَسَمِعَتِand heardالنَّاسَthe peopleيَتَحَدَّثُونَtalkingعَنْaboutطِفْلٍa childجَمِيلٍbeautifulفِيinقَصْرِthe palace ofالْمَلِكِ.the King.

And the sister of Moses went searching for her brother, and heard the people talking about a beautiful child in the palace of the King.
