٢٤24--بَيْنَBetweenالْحَقِّthe truthوَالْبَاطِلِand falsehood.

24 - Between the truth and falsehood.

قَالَHe saidلَهُمْto themمُوسَىٰMosesأَلْقُواThrowمَاwhatأَنْتُمْyouمُلْقُونَare throwing.

Moses said to them, "Throw what you are throwing."

فَأَلْقَوْاSo they threwحِبَالَهُمْtheir ropesوَعِصِيَّهُمْand their staffsوَقَالُوْاand saidبِعِزَّةِBy the mightفِرْعَوْنَof Pharaohإِنَّاindeed weلَنَحْنُare indeedالْغَالِبُونَthe victorious."

So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed we are the victorious."

وَرَأَىAnd sawالنَّاسُthe peopleعَجَبًاa wonder,حَيَّاتٌsnakesتَسْعَىٰrunningفِيinالْمَيْدَانِthe arena.

And the people saw a wonder: snakes running in the arena.

وَدُهِشَAnd was astonishedالنَّاسُthe peopleوَتَرَاجَعُواand retreatedإِلَىtoالْخَلْفِthe back.

And the people were astonished and retreated to the back.

وَهَتَفُوا:And they shouted:حَيَّاتٌ!Snakes! حَيَّاتٌ!Snakes!

And they shouted: "Snakes! Snakes!"

وَصَاحَتْAnd screamedالنِّسَاءُ،the women,وَبَكَتْand criedالْأَطْفَالُ،the children, وَعَلَاand roseالْهَتَافُthe shoutingفِيinالْمَيْدَانِ:the arena:

And the women screamed, and the children cried, and the shouting rose in the arena:

حَيَّاتٌ!Snakes! حَيَّاتٌ!Snakes!

"Snakes! Snakes!"

وَرَأَىٰAnd sawمُوسَىٰMosesمَاwhatرَأَىٰsawالنَّاسُthe peopleوَتَعَجَّبَ:and was amazed:

And Moses saw what the people saw and was amazed:

فَإِذَاAnd beholdحِبَالُهُمْtheir ropesوَعِصِيُّهُمْand their staffsيُخَيَّلُappearedإِلَيْهِto himمِنْfromسِحْرِهِمْtheir sorceryأَنَّهَاthat theyتَسْعَىٰwere running.

And behold, their ropes and their staffs appeared to him from their sorcery that they were running.

وَخَطَرَAnd occurredفِيinقَلْبِthe heartمُوسَىٰof Mosesخَاطِرُa thoughtخَوْفٍ!of fear!

And a thought of fear occurred in the heart of Moses!

وَلِمَاذَاAnd whyلَاnotيَخَافُfearمُوسَىٰ؟Moses?

And why should Moses not fear?

هَذَاThisيَوْمُis the dayالرِّهَانِof the betوَعِنْدَand atالِامْتِحَانِthe testيُكْرَمُis honoredالرَّجُلُa manأَوْorيُهَانُ!is humiliated!

This is the day of the bet, and at the test, a man is honored or is humiliated!

وَإِذَاAnd ifغَلَبَdefeatالسَّحَرَةُthe sorcerers- لَا- mayقَدَّرَGodاللهُnotذَلِكَ -allow that -وَإِذَاand ifغُلِبَis defeatedمُوسَىٰMosesلَاmayسَمَحَGodاللهُnotبِذَلِكَ -allow that -فَمَاذَاthen whatيَكُونُ؟will be?الْعِيَاذُWe seek refugeبِاللهِ !!in God!!

And if the sorcerers defeat - may God not allow that - and if Moses is defeated, may God not allow that - then what will be? We seek refuge in God!!

وَلَيْسَAnd is notغَلَبُthe defeatمُوسَىٰof Mosesغَلَبَa defeatرَجُلٍ،of a man,بَلْbut ratherهُوَit isغَلَبُa defeatدِينٍof a religionأَمَامَbeforeمَلِكٍ.a king.

And the defeat of Moses is not the defeat of a man, but rather it is the defeat of a religion before a king.
