مَنَعُواThey withheldوَandيُكْرِهُونَthey hateمَاwhatأَعْطُوا.they were given.

They withheld and hated what they were given.

وَلَمْAnd notيَلْبَثُواdid they stayقَلِيلًاexcept a littleأَنْuntilقَالُواthey saidلِمُوسَىto Mosesقَدْindeedسَئِمْنَاwe are tiredهَذَاof thisالطَّعَامِfoodالْوَاحِدِ،single,

And they did not stay long before they said to Moses, 'Indeed, we are tired of this single food,'

وَقَدْand indeedسَئِمْنَاwe are tiredهَذَاof thisاللَّحْمَmeatوَهَذِهِand thisالْحَلْوَى.manna.

And we are tired of this meat and this manna.

وَقَدْAnd indeedاشْتَهَيْنَاwe craveالْخُضَرَthe vegetablesوَالْبُقُولَand the legumes

And we crave the vegetables and the legumes

يَامُوسَىO Mosesلَنْneverنَصْبِرَwill we endureعَلَىuponطَعَامٍfoodوَاحِدٍoneفَادْعُso invokeلَنَاfor usرَبَّكَyour Lordيُخْرِجُthat He may bring forthلَنَاfor usمِمَّاfrom whatتُنْبِتُgrows

O Moses, we will never endure one food, so invoke your Lord for us to bring forth for us from what grows

الْأَرْضُthe earthمِنْofبَقْلِهَاits herbsوَقِثَّابِهَاand its cucumbersوَفُومِهَاand its garlicوَعَدَسِهَاand its lentilsوَبَصَلِهَا.and its onions.

of its herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, and its onions.

تَعَجَّبَWas astonishedمُوسَىMosesمِنْatهَذَاthisالسُّؤَالِquestionالْغَرِيبِ.strange.

Moses was astonished at this strange question.

وَقَالَAnd he saidبِصَوْتٍwith a voiceفِيهِin which wasالْإِنْكَارُdisapprovalوَفِيهِand in which wasالِاسْتِعْجَابُastonishmentوَفِيهِand in which wasالْعِتَابُ.reproach.

And he said with a voice containing disapproval, astonishment, and reproach.

أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَDo you exchangeالَّذِيthat whichهُوَisأَدْنَىٰinferiorبِالَّذِيfor that whichهُوَisخَيْرٌbetter?

Do you exchange that which is inferior for that which is better?

أَبِقُولًاLegumesوَخُضَرٌand vegetablesمَكَانَinstead ofطُيُورٍbirdsوَحَلْوَىٰand mannaلَمْnotتَمَسَّهَاhave touched itيَدُhandإِنْسَانٍ؟of man?

Legumes and vegetables instead of birds and manna which no human hand has touched?

أَطَعَامُFoodالْفَلَّاحِينَof farmersبَدَلَinstead ofطَعَامِfoodالْمُلُوكِ؟of kings?

Food of farmers instead of food of kings?

يَاOلِفَسَادِfor the corruptionالذَّوْقِ!of taste!يَاOلِسُوءِfor the poornessالِاخْتِيَارِ!of choice!

O for the corruption of taste! O for the poorness of choice!

وَلَكِنَّButبَنِيthe childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelلَمْdid notيَتَنَازَلُواconcedeعَنْfromسُؤَالِهِمْ،their request,وَلَمْand norيَزَالُواdid they ceaseيَطْلُبُونَdemanding

But the Children of Israel did not relent from their request, and continued demanding

الْخُضَرَthe vegetablesوَالْبُقُولَ.and the legumes.

the vegetables and the legumes.

فَقَالَSo saidمُوسَىٰMosesإِنَّindeedمَاwhatسَأَلْتُمْyou asked forيُوجَدُis foundفِيinكُلِّeveryقَرْيَةٍvillageوَمِصْرٍ.and city.

So Moses said, 'Indeed, what you asked for is found in every village and city.'

اهْبِطُواGo downمِصْرًاto any cityفَإِنَّfor indeedلَكُمْfor youمَاis whatسَأَلْتُمْ.you asked for.

Go down to any city, for indeed, you will have what you asked for.
