عِنَادُStubbornnessبَنِيof the childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israel
Stubbornness of the Children of Israel
وَكَانَتْAnd wereبَنُوthe childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelفِيinطِبَاعِهِمْtheir naturesأَطْفَالًاchildren
And the children of Israel were in their natures children
،,وَأَطْفَالًاand childrenمُعَانِدِينَstubborn
and stubborn children
وَكُلَّمَاAnd wheneverأُمِرُواthey were commandedبِأَمْرٍwith a command
And whenever they were commanded with a command
،,خَالَفُوهُthey disobeyed itإِلَىtoضِدِّهِits opposite
they disobeyed it to its opposite
وَيَسْتَهْزِئُونَand they mockedبِهِit
and they mocked it
كَأَنَّهُمْAs if theyيَرَوْنَconsideredمِنَofالْوَاجِبِthe duty
As if they considered it of the duty
أَنْthatيُبَدِّلُواthey should changeمَاwhatيُقَالُis saidلَهُمْto them
that they should change what is said to them
كَطِفْلٍLike a childعَنِيدٍstubborn
Like a stubborn child
يُقَالُwho is toldلَهُto himقُمْ"Stand up"فَيَجْلِسُhe sits down
who is told to him 'Stand up,' he sits down
،,وَيُقَالُand is toldلَهُto himاجْلِسْ"Sit down"فَيَقُومُhe stands up
and is told to him 'Sit down,' he stands up
،,وَيُقَالُand is toldلَهُto himاسْكُتْ"Be silent"فَيَتَكَلَّمُhe speaks
and is told to him 'Be silent,' he speaks
،,وَيُقَالُand is toldلَهُto himتَكَلَّمْ"Speak"فَيَسْكُتُhe is silent
and is told to him 'Speak,' he is silent
وَكَانَAnd wasفِيهِمْin themعِنَادُthe stubbornnessالْأَطْفَالِof children
And there was in them the stubbornness of children
فِيinخُبْثِthe maliceالْأَشْرَارِof the wicked
in the malice of the wicked
فِيinهُزْءِthe mockeryالْأَعْدَاءِof the enemies
in the mockery of the enemies
فِيinسَفَاهَةِthe foolishnessالْمَجَانِينِof the madmen
in the foolishness of the madmen
كَانُواThey wereيُرِيدُونَwantingأَنْtoيَسْكُنُواreside
They wanted to reside
قَرْيَةًa village،,وَيَأْكُلُواand eatطَعَامَهُمُtheir food
a village, and eat their food
الشَّهِيَّthe deliciousمِنَfromالْخُضَرِthe vegetablesوَالْبُقُولِand the legumes
the delicious, from the vegetables and legumes
وَلَكِنَّهُمْBut whenلَمَّاtheyقِيلَwere toldلَهُمُit
But when they were told it
ادْخُلُوا"Enterهَذِهِthisالْقَرْيَةَvillage
'Enter this village
فَكُلُواand eatمِنْهَاfrom itحَيْثُwhereverشِئْتُمْyou wishرَغَدًاin abundance
and eat from it wherever you wish in abundance
،,وَادْخُلُواand enterالْبَابَthe gateسُجَّدًاprostrating
and enter the gate prostrating
،,وَقُولُواand sayحِطَّةٌ'Absolution'
and say, 'Absolution'
،,نَغْفِرْWe will forgiveلَكُمْfor youخَطَايَاكُمْyour sins
We will forgive for you your sins
وَسَنَزِيدُand We will increaseالْمُحْسِنِينَthe doers of good
and We will increase the doers of good

غَضِبُواThey became angryمِنْfromهَذَاthisالْأَمْرِcommandالْإِلَهِيِّdivine
They became angry from this divine command
،,وَدَخَلُواand they enteredالْقَرْيَةَthe villageكُرْهًاreluctantlyوَهُزُوًاand mockingly
and they entered the village reluctantly and mockingly
،,يَزْحَفُونَcrawlingعَلَىonأَسْتَاهِهِمْtheir hindquarters
crawling on their hindquarters
فَبَدَّلَSo changedالَّذِينَthose whoظَلَمُواwrongedقَوْلًاa sayingغَيْرَother thanالَّذِيthat whichقِيلَwas saidلَهُمْto them
So those who wronged changed a saying other than that which was said to them
