فَأَنْزَلَSo He sent downاللهُAllahعَلَيْهِمْupon themبَلَاءًa punishment،,وَبَعَثَand He sentعَلَيْهِمْupon themوَبَاءًa plagueمَاتُواthey diedمِنْهُfrom itمَوْتَa deathالْفِئْرَانِlike rats.
So Allah sent down a punishment upon them, and sent a plague upon them from which they died a death like rats.
وَإِذَاAnd whenأُمِرُواthey are commandedبِأَمْرٍwith a commandأَكْثَرُواthey multipliedالسُّؤَالَthe questionsوَالتَّنْقِيرَand the scrutiny.
And when they are commanded with a command, they multiply the questions and the scrutiny.
شَأْنُThe caseرَجُلٍof a manلَاwho does notيُرِيدُwantأَنْtoيَعْمَلَworkفَيُكْثِرَso he multipliesالسُّؤَالَthe questionsوَالتَّنْقِيرَand the scrutiny.
The case of a man who does not want to work, so he multiplies the questions and the scrutiny.
حَدَثَThere occurredفِيinبَنِيthe Children ofإِسْرَائِيلَIsraelحَادِثُan incidentقَتْلٍof killing،,فَأَهَمَّso it concernedذَلِكَthatبَنِيthe Children ofإِسْرَائِيلَIsrael.
There occurred in the Children of Israel an incident of killing, and that concerned the Children of Israel.
وَلَمْAnd they did notيَهْتَدُواfind their wayإِلَىtoالْقَاتِلِthe killer،,وَكَانَand it wasالسُّؤَالُthe questionعَنِaboutالْقَاتِلِthe killerحَدِيثَthe talkالنّاسِof the people.
And they did not find their way to the killer, and the question about the killer was the talk of the people.
جَاءُواThey cameإِلَىtoمُوسَىMosesعَلَيْهِupon himالصَّلَاةُbe prayerوَالسَّلَامُand peace،,وَقَالُواand they saidأَعِنَّاhelp usيَاOنَبِيَّProphetاللهِAllahفِيinهَذِهِthisالْقَضِيَّةِmatter،,وَادْعُand supplicateاللهَAllahيُبَيِّنْHe may clarifyلَنَاto usالْقَاتِلَthe killer.
They came to Moses, upon him be prayer and peace, and they said, "Help us, O Prophet of Allah, in this matter, and supplicate Allah that He may clarify the killer to us."
١٢12--الْبَقَرَةِAl-Baqarah
12 - Al-Baqarah
وَدَعَاAnd Moses supplicatedمُوسَىMosesرَبَّهُhis Lordفَأَوْحَىso He revealedإِلَيْهِto himأَنْthatيَأْمُرَهُمْHe command themبِذَبْحِto slaughterبَقَرَةٍa cow.
And Moses supplicated his Lord, so He revealed to him that He command them to slaughter a cow.
هُنَالِكَThereحَلَّتِoccurredالْمُصِيبَةُthe calamity،,وَبَدَأَand beganبَنُوthe Children ofإِسْرَائِيلَIsraelيَسْأَلُونَto askوَيَسْخَرُونَand to mock.
There occurred the calamity, and the Children of Israel began to ask and to mock.
﴿(وَإِذْAnd whenقَالَsaidمُوسَىMosesلِقَوْمِةٍto his peopleإِنَّindeedاللهَAllahيَأْمُرُكُمْcommands youأَنْtoتَذْبَحُواslaughterبَقَرَةًa cow.قَالُواThey saidأَتَتَّخِذُنَاdo you take usهُزُوًاfor a mockery?قَالَHe saidأَعُوْذُI seek refugeبِاللَّهِin AllahأَنْthatأَكُونَI beمِنَfromالْجُهِلِينَthe ignorant.﴾)
(And when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you take us for a mockery?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah that I be from the ignorant.")
وَهُنَاAnd hereأَرْسَلُواthey sentالْأَسْئِلَةَthe questions.
And here they sent the questions.
قَالُواThey saidادْعُsupplicateلَنَاfor usرَبَّكَyour LordيُبَيِّنْHe may clarifyلَّنَاto usمَاwhatهِيَit is.قَالَHe saidإِنَّهُIndeed, itيَقُوْلُsaysإِنَّهَاit isبَقَرَةًa cowلَّاnotفَارِضٌoldوَلَاnorبِكْرُyoungعَوَانٌintermediateبَيْنَbetweenذُلِكَthat.فَافْعَلُوْاSo doمَاwhatتُؤْمَرُوْنَyou are commanded.﴾)
They said, "Supplicate for us your Lord that He may clarify to us what it is." He said, "Indeed, it says it is a cow, not old nor young, intermediate between that. So do what you are commanded.")
وَلَمْAnd they did notيَقِفُواstopعَلَىatهَذَاthisالسُّؤَالِquestion،,بَلْbut ratherبَدَأُواthey beganيَسْأَلُونَto askعَنْaboutلَوْنِهَاits color.
And they did not stop at this question, but rather they began to ask about its color.
