وَصَلَArrivedمُوسَىٰMosesإِلَىٰtoطُورِMountسِينَاءَSinai
Moses arrived at Mount Sinai,
فَكَلَّمَهُand spoke to himرَبُّهُhis Lordوَنَاجَاهُand conversed with him
and his Lord spoke to him, and conversed with him,
وَقَرَّبَهُand brought him nearوَأَدْنَاهُand drew him close.
and brought him near, and drew him close.
فَزَادَهُSo that increased himذَلِكَinشَوْقًاlonging.
So that increased him in longing.
فَقَالَSo he saidرَبِّMy Lordأَرِنِيshow meأَنْظُرْthat I may lookإِلَيْكَat You.
So he said, "My Lord, show me that I may look at You."
وَاللَّهُAnd AllahيَعْلَمُknowsأَنَّthatمُوسَىٰMosesلَاcannotيَسْتَطِيعُdoذَلِكَthat
And Allah knows that Moses cannot do that
لِأَنَّbecauseاللَّهَAllahلَاnotتُدْرِكُهُcomprehend Himالْأَبْصَارُthe vision
because "Vision perceives Him not,
وَهُوَand Heيُدْرِكُperceivesالْأَبْصَارَthe vision
and He perceives [all] vision,
وَهُوَand He isاللَّطِيفُthe Subtleالْخَبِيرُthe All-Aware.
and He is the Subtle, the All-Aware.
وَإِنَّAnd indeedالْجِبَالَthe mountainsلَاcannotتَسْتَطِيعُbearأَنْtoتَحْمِلَtolerateكَلَامَهُHis speech
And the mountains cannot bear His speech,
فَضْلًاlet aloneعَنْofنُورِهِHis light.
let alone His light.
لَوْIfأَنْزَلْنَاWe had sent downهَذَاthisالْقُرْآنَQuranعَلَىuponجَبَلٍa mountain
If We had sent down this Quran upon a mountain,
لَرَأَيْتَهُyou would have seen itخَاشِعًاhumbledمُتَصَدِّعًاsplitting apartمِنْfromخَشْيَةِfear ofاللَّهِAllah.
you would have seen it humbled, splitting apart from fear of Allah.
قَالَHe saidلَنْNeverتَرَانِيwill you see Meوَلَكِنِbutانْظُرْlookإِلَىatالْجَبَلِthe mountain
He said, "Never will you see Me, but look at the mountain;
فَإِنِso ifاسْتَقَرَّit remainsمَكَانَهُin its placeفَسَوْفَthen you willتَرَانِيsee Me."
if it should remain in its place, then you will see Me."
فَلَمَّاAnd whenتَجَلَّىrevealed Himselfرَبُّهُhis Lordلِلْجَبَلِto the mountainجَعَلَهُHe made itدَكًّاdust
And when his Lord revealed Himself to the mountain, He made it level [to the ground],
وَخَرَّand fellمُوسَىٰMosesصَعِقًاunconscious.
and Moses fell unconscious.
فَلَمَّاAnd whenأَفَاقَhe recoveredقَالَhe saidسُبْحَانَكَGlory be to You!
And when he recovered, he said, "Glory be to You!
تُبْتُI have repentedإِلَيْكَto Youوَأَنَاand Iأَوَّلُam the firstالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the believers."
I have repented to You, and I am the first of the believers."
قَالَHe saidيَاOمُوسَىٰMosesإِنِّيindeed Iاصْطَفَيْتُكَhave chosen youعَلَىoverالنَّاسِthe people
He said, "O Moses, indeed I have chosen you over the people
بِرِسَالَاتِيwith My messagesوَبِكَلَامِيand with My speech.
with My messages and with My speech.
فَخُذْSo takeمَاwhatآتَيْتُكَI have given youوَكُنْand beمِنَamongالشَّاكِرِينَthe grateful."
So take what I have given you and be among the grateful."
وَكَتَبْنَاAnd We inscribedلَهُfor himفِيinالْأَلْوَاحِthe tablets
And We inscribed for him on the tablets
مِنْofكُلِّallشَيْءٍthingsمَوْعِظَةًan admonitionوَتَفْصِيلًاand a detailed explanationلِكُلِّof everyشَيْءٍthing.
of all things - an admonition and a detailed explanation of all things.
فَخُذْهَاSo take themبِقُوَّةٍwith strengthوَأْمُرْand commandقَوْمَكَyour peopleيَأْخُذُواto takeبِأَحْسَنِهَاthe best of it.
"So take them with strength and order your people to take the best of it.
سَأُورِيكُمْI will show youدَارَthe homeالْفَاسِقِينَof the defiantly disobedient."
I will show you the home of the defiantly disobedient."
